My Microdiscectomy Back Surgery Experience L5S1- first day

  • I had a microdiscectomy done yesterday evening and thought I would share my experience. I'm not the most articulate speaker so I thought I would clarify some things here...my MRI was apparently deceptive in that it showed that my condition was 'not so serious' (which a doctor actually said to me me after I burst into tears telling him about how much pain I was in and begged him to just cut off my leg)...but upon opening me up the surgeon (different guy) saw that my nerve was extremely pinched in a way that the MRI didn't show very well. I tried all the alternative methods I listed over a period of at least two months for each one e.g. massage therapy once a week for two months. I continued the things that worked and discontinued the things that resulted in no improvement (steroid injections did not help me at all).
I also forgot to mention- the two most annoying parts about the procedure were the IV and also the sore throat from the air tube thing...so during the first 24 hours I wasn't even complaining about my back! It should also be noted that I was able to eat an entire Chipotle burrito for dinner after the operation.
So far I have no regrets...well I regret not getting this done sooner! This condition has defined me for the past two years and although the recovery will be long I am already feeling a difference!

Just received mine this morning. Went in with searing radiating pain from butt down to calf with numb/tingling in my foot (left leg). Went under about 915am woke up 1230pm was cleared and walked out of the hospital at 2pm.
It’s 820pm now and I have had 0 pain since I woke up other then my foot feeling a little funny. Surgery site is tender. Had great care if your in Miami, FL I went to the University of Miami Neurosurgeons. Awesome staff, very capable of fixing you up. Looking forward to recovery and properly living a better lifestyle.

Thank you for posting this video, you described exactly what I am going through, I emailed my dr yesterday to look into surgery. My condition is severe, in order to go around the house, I crawl, I cannot stand or walk, I used to be extremely physically and socially active, not so much nowadays. Most doctors don't even care to hear or understand the emotional toll, so also thank you for mention it. Please keep us posted on your recovery!

I went through exactly the same pain symptoms and emotions you had to endure during your herniated disc phase from getting 2 epidural shots to teuradyl injections to just function. Thank you for sharing. I had a back injury that I had lived with for 10 plus years until I couldn’t live with it anymore. I had to jump through the many hoops of the healthcare system until the microdiscetomy was recommended and completed. After the surgery what a difference in life quality. That being said keeping the core strong has had to become a priority to prevent future injury’s.

Thank you for your video Brigid. Your openness and natural beauty made me smile. I'm in my 50s and have suffered with periodic episodes of lumbar back pain since I was your age. People who don't have herniated discs really do not relate to how debilitating it is, both physically but even more, emotionally debilitating as it can easily begin to encroach upon your sense of well-being and self-sufficiency. Something that recently changed my life in this regard was the use of an inversion table. It has completely resolved my back pain. If is its not contraindicated for you, you might consider it if your pain returns. Good luck and God bless you.

A mylegram with CT follow up is a definite answer to the nerve root involvement.
I have the same thing going on and even with MRI it was still not an answer until a good doctor with years of experience preformed the mylegram and it was definite .
I'm having surgery after 6 months of torture.
I hope you and all that have communicated here are all well and pain free.

Im in so much pain right now and just can't wait for the relief. I can barely stand up and walk. I had an injection last week and it helped with the pain in my leg and foot, but only when I'm laying down. When i simply stand in the kitchen to make something to eat, it comes right back. Anyways, i will be praying for your recovery and look forward to your updates!

I had sciatic pain for over 2 years as well. I went to the Dr and did a basic x ray and sent me to PT. I did all the exercises and stretches which only seemed to aggravate the sciatic pain. About 8 months later I had the worst pain in my leg that I have ever felt. The next day, I woke up to weird weakness in my leg and pain in my calf. Over the next few weeks the pain in my calf got worse but I didnt have any pain in my back (never had any back pain) and I noticed that I could not flex my left calf muscle - like it was paralyzed. Went back to the Dr and finally got an MRI and they found 9mm disc herniation with 13mm extrusion of disc fragment compressing the nerve roots. It’s been about 9 weeks since and I finally got some nerve function back in my calf and no sciatic pain at all. I still have weakness in my left leg and numbness in my left heel/tight left calf. I go in for surgery next week. Wish I could have had an MRI years ago, I could have made changes to prevent all this from happening. Hope anyone who is dealing with this heals physically and emotionally. It’s a very long healing process.

I also have a herniated disk I’ve had it since October. Around January it started to get really bad and my worst was around feb/March I also could barely walk and could not drive at all. I’ve gotten my last injection today but in two weeks I’ll find out if I need surgery and I think I will but this was very helpful and made me feel more confident about the surgery if I do need it. Especially since I am currently going to school and have two young kids.

Hey BB, thanks for the videos. The similarities are crazy, immigrated from South Africa to New Zealand a few years ago, I slipped my disc while moving a washing machine moving house and that was the end of that. 2.5 months later I have been at home in bed for 1 month so far, I decided to go see a Chiro that didn't work then a Physio then I tried the ER who didn't want to help me cause I guess I wasn't bleeding then my GP who gave me 5 types of painkillers, anti inflammatories, anti depressants, laxatives and who knows what else. I even tried to ask for Cortisone but no doctor wanted to give it to me.
The pain went through all the medication(even tramadol) which I try not take too often cause that's damaging my organs long term, it really sucks I can't laugh, can't sneeze can't walk. I love exercise and driving so those two things are out.
I did an MRI last week to find a massive bulging protruded disc on my L5/S1 vertebrae, the surgeon has suggested micro discectomy surgery and It is scheduled for next week. Initially I thought it's a no brainer considering the ongoing pain, it really takes a toll on a person's psychy.
But now I'm having doubts about surgery, don't really know what to think anymore.

I’m currently in the hospital day #3 here and I get this surgery tomorrow between 11am- 1pm and I so badly need it, my L5 is bulging but also ruptured and I can’t feel my left side it’s all numb and my back and sciatica is severe, also can’t feel my bladder and haven’t pooped in a week as of tomorrow (can’t feel the urge) and I’m in so much pain when I stand that my body goes into shock, my blood pressure drops then I pass out and have done so 4-5 times now, todays was the last straw for my physical therapist in the hospital, he was like there’s no other option but surgery and wrote it in my notes for the surgeon and the surgeon agreed and so here we are!!!

    Hi There
I’m considering this operation too. Symptoms very similar to yours. I’m only 24, so am reluctant so very glad I came across this video. Could you please let me know how you’re doing now? I realise this video is old. Just want to know if you’ve seen a huge improvement?

Had L3, 4, & 5 done 2 1/2 weeks ago. I am 71. L5 was my worst one. I am on10 lb limit thru Sunday adding 5 pounds a week. I feel pretty good. Still a bit stiff but getting better.

I've got one to look forward to on the 30th Dec. Absolutely crapping it after looking at the operation Tube, but been told there's no toher option due to the size of the herniation. Good luck to you all. Hope it helps.

i m 27 yr old and i found out i have a disc bulging at l4-5 and scoliosis. The cause is due to heavy lifting while i work. due to carrying heavy weight using right hand, my vertebrate bend little towards right side.. so i m having pain while walking and standing. did almost a month of physiotherapy and on medication still not improve. its been now almost a year since the incident. i had completed my master recently on may and now i can't apply for job now. as i know how much u r going through. wish you have a great recovery. i think now u r doing great. ur video was in 2015 so sorry for my belated wishes... i enjoyed reading your update article just now. Wonderful 🖒😁

I am going through the same thing . Same disc and my mri shows moderate herniation on l5-s1 with bulging on l3-l4. I had a strain injury that didn’t leave me in allot of pain but healed fast . Few months later threw my back it it hurt allot for a week then got better only minor sciatica sometimes then one day bam! So much pain I couldn’t stand or move without tears . Now for few weeks been on restriction by my doctor ,can only sleep in one position . Walking is the only thing that brings relief from the sciatica . I got some pinching of my spinal cord too. Driving is awful in the morning cause of sitting on that nerve . Just waking up when it’s irritated and my foot has numbness along with my calf. I am seeing a surgeon now . They want to try injectionsfirst but my insurance won’t cover it till I get physical therapy first which the surgeon feels it will make me worse .

Ashley Davis how are you doing?
      Did you have the surgery?
Have the same problems as you.
I was told 6 months ago I didn't need surgery but now I need it ASAP
My left leg is giving out on me and can barely walk or drive.
      Just terrible
      Did you have a mylegram?
      It's definitely worth it.
The MRI results were conclusive but try PT and injections..
No it's worse now I'm having the disc removed thank goodness

@@Jacob-rp5ip My procedures were 32 days ago. I still have some soreness and am turning to not bend, twist or lift over 10 lbs as instructed. I can drive now but not far without discomfort. I won't return to work until after 8 weeks of healing. My job requires heavy lifting as well as bending and twisting. Several days ago I think I over exerted what I thought I could handle and have more stiffness and pain than I had beforehand. I'll take it easy for the next month and do as my Surgeon instructed me to do. Everyone heals differently but in the end do what the professionals instruct.

My problems come when i stand and when i walk. Bending, sitting, and running usually give me relief. My fear is losing mobility. Any info would help.
