Katniss even mentions that “at least we have the freedom to choose who we marry” and you could easily see how a person in the “heat of the moment” wouldn’t necessarily think long term on this one. On top of this a family with more children has better chances of being monetarally well off since they’ll have more people to work around the house.
There’s also another point of a reason why you would have a child if you lived in one of the career districts then you would have the privilege of having your child be the winner and possibly able to have a better living a standard If that child was to help you in anyway

And since a lot of this book is inspired by how Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were run, I could see the peacekeepers being given orders to sleep with women to ensure the population of children in the districts remains plentiful.
Yes, I do believe that the Capitol would force it upon the Districts if they noticed that they stopped having children. If there wasn't any children to reap then the Capitol would have to find another way to show that they are still "in rule" of all of the Districts after the "Dark Days".

It wasn't that long ago that the childhood mortality rate was extremely high. That actually inspired people to have more children to compensate. The need to have someone to carry on ones genes is powerful. But often it was also because children meant free labor for the family. For example, for farms. To us, it may seem barbaric, but needs must.
I don't think they would force people to get pregnant without punishing them first. They might take food away from the districts or even force adults to go into the hunger games temporarily.

You need to remember that for 99% of human history like 30-50% if children died of disease before reaching the age of 18, and that didn't stop people having kids, if anything they had even more then now.
I think that many people in the districts just want to have children, and just hope that their child won't be reaped. Many victors have children of their own, and they at least know what they went through. Katniss said that she's never going to have kids because they could be sent to the games, but honestly Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen for example seem like a couple who wanted to have kids. This story is based on the story about Minotaur - in this myth, people of Athens still have kids, knowing that they might be sent to Minotaur. Also, there were people in totalitarian societis who really wanted kids - they probably gave them hope.
One thing to also remember is that much of the district's populations are starving, and a lack of proper nutrition and low body weight can cause periods to be irregular/nonexistent. Even if some women knew about period tracking It would be very hard for them to do so

Fun fact, my triple great grandma had a kid at 49 in 1854. Imagine having your child bearing years run from 19-49. That's 30 years. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the capitol is out there putting fertility meds in the water
My grandma had her last child at 45. Of course they were a farm family in Missouri. She gave birth to five children but the first (a son) was stillborn. So they had three daughters after that. After the last daughter was born 12 years go by and that’s when my uncle was born. My mom was the second daughter. All five were born at home. My father’s mother had six children which includes a pair of twin girls. They too lived in a very small town in a farming community in Missouri. My father was the third child. My grandma had 3 boys and 3 girls. My dad is the only son still alive. The three girls are also still living. My parents were born in the nineteen fourties’.
There's a lot of people that live in a poor and sometimes toxic environment yet they keep having kids, is not like they stop thinking and planning. They just do it.

I think there might also be another reason. If your like Peeta and you came from a trade family,then the parents would need to have kids to keep the family buisness going. Same for the miners,if your kid gets past 18 then you can make money from them working in the mines,so in this senerio the capital wouldn't have to do anything just sit there while there plan works.
that would be a scary concept at any rate. The idea that ANY government could force someone to have children for any reason. You would then have to determine how they would accomplish this. Would they do the least painful method of penalizing some one financially if they have not had any children with-in a certain time limit or would they go with darker methods that I don't wish to go into for obvious reasons. Then I would decide to never get pregnant, because there's everything I need until my death and I would never ever use a pregnancy or a baby for getting stuff and to survive. I did the math and in a tiny district like 12 (I based it on the size of my town which is about 5,000 people), based on the 2015 age curve for the US there's about a 1 in 50 chance your name gets pulled at some point in your lifetime (I won't get into all the math) So even though there is that chance, I feel like it would still be worth it, maybe? Especially in bigger districts, or in ones like 1 and 2 where you're not going unless you want to because there are so many people desperate to volunteer.

I thought that they had children either because they had not access to contraceptives (prices or forbidden) or because they will become their pension plan, since in a country that treat the districts as slaves they might not have the right to receive a pension once they are too old to work.
I feel like Katniss didn’t say anything about her period is because she was on hormones so she didn’t get her period or her mother was there to handle her period or something
I don't think it would ever get to that, actually. People, I've noticed, manage to do risky things ignoring the bad odds by keeping a "not to me" mindset. That's how people do things like getting on cars (and even being careless on a car) despite the high risk it involves. If a couple wanted to have kids, it's a good shot they would keep that hopeful "not to my kid" mindset until they turned to their first reaping year and the chance of it being their kid actually pops up. You can even see, at the beginnin of the hunger games, Katniss reassuring Prim that there's close to no chance because her name is only once. And, to a point, she even believes it. And even if there was a mass no-kid movement (which I doubt would ever be as widespread as to not have hundreds of kids to be reaped), it's more likely the capitol would go for the contraceptions before even going to consider forced insemination.

Yeh I agree it’s all about natural survival instinct we are all born with we have no choice in this matter... also I wonder if the capitol due to its advanced genetic engineering somehow managed to make this sexual instinct even stronger for example by using retroviruses to insert specific pieces of genes into humans by putting them in the food they eat or releasing them into the air as gases. But think the theory about ppl having as many children as they can so that the odds of being reaped are lowered makes a lot of sense. It’s like how sardines cluster into massive shoals to reduce their likelihood of being eaten.
Only a few centuries ago it was normal for human's to loose a lot of their children quite often, mostly diseases, accidents , war etc. (History , medieval period). It does not make difference if a child is murdered in the games , or ...in real world...is murdered by a drunken driver or in a war as conscripted soldier. And we do risk that our children get murdered by drunken drivers , must serve in an army. It is even a much bigger chance than being reaped for those games. Back to the games: Most people will just ignore the chance of reaping, or even try to get more children, so at least one survives. Do not forget that there is only one who will take care for you if you grow to old for still working....your own child(ren). There is no retirement payment in the districts for old people. And loosing your child will be much more normal than at this moment in the west due to lack of treatment for ill children, so not only a risk of loosing your child in the games.
Also i wonder, since so Many children die due to starvation etc why so people still haave children. Of course the case might be different with the merchants who have more money, Peeta for example has two brothers. Also i think panen needs kids to work in the districts and as peacekeepers
One thing I wonder about is that the careers are made up of tributes from districts 1, 2 and 4 but in the 74th Hunger Games, none of the careers are from district 4. Why is this?

I don't think anyone in Panem has access to birth control and that includes citizens of the Capitol. Abortion is probably illegal, too, no matter the circumstances. If the Districts stopped having children, the Capitol would probably give incentives, I don't think they'd be making people Get pregnant whether they wanted to or not. No Tributes from a district? They'd probably go after criminals' children from the Capitol, or adult criminals from the Capitol, or people Snow thinks he owed a bad turn to. If the Capitol started forcing people to get pregnant any other way by choice, they'd run the risk of sparking more than a few rebellions and they'd definitely be getting mass suicides.

Makes me wonder about asexuality and/or same gender/same sex attraction, or being intersex or nonbinary. Would intersex and/or nonbinary children be allowed to be reaped if they identified as neither gender? How do people interact around same gender / same sex attraction and/or asexual or otherwise on the asexual spectrum, would they be shamed for not having biological children?
The capitol forces you to have babies right? but what if you can't have babies or like you don't wanna get married to someone. Even though this is unlikely, if they all don't have babies there would be no children. So with no children they can't have the hunger games right?
okay so I've been thinking about this and in Catching Fire, Katniss realizes that she and Peeta are going to be forced to get married, and she wonders if the Capitol will make them have kids. We've seen over and over again how the Capitol works, they are very good at threatening people and manipulating them into doing whatever they want. The Capitol has a long track record of threatening people before inflicting widespread violence. Obviously, as you said, it is impossible for all of Panem to just stop having kids, but say in one district they got close. Let's say District 7, which has about 3 times the population of 12 in the series, but isn't quite as bad off as some of the other districts (and might therefore have the means to do this) was able to decrease the number of babies born in a year to say 30%. Obviously, within a year the Capitol would take notice and realize that something was up and that people were choosing not to have children anymore. I think that the Capitol's first move would be to target specific families. For example, Mr. and Mrs. X have 2 girls who are 11 and 8. They are still young enough to have more kids but have chosen not to because of the Games. I think the Capitol would send peacekeepers to their house and tell them that if they did not have another child in the next 2 years, their oldest daughter would be reaped for the Games. This could only be pulled off on a small scale because if they tried it on multiple people and more than one or two couples were unable to have another child or unwilling, then they'd run into issues. Because of this, I think this would just be a test run, and they might not even do it at all. Step two would be more widespread. The Capitol would approach specific families in similar situations and tell them that if they had another child in the next two years, their oldest child would be out of the reaping for life. They could do this to hundreds of families, and it would increase the number of children being born. The beauty of this is that they can target the same families over and over and over again as they continue to have kids. The Capitol would likely take this one step further and threaten couples who don't have kids already by threatening the lives of other family members or something like that. The thing about this system is that it would provide the population boost needed to keep the lumber industry running smoothly, but likely there would only be a few kids in the reapings each year. This literally wouldn't matter because as long as there are enough kids at the reapings, the people in the other districts would have no idea that most of them are safe. They could maybe even force those kids to look scared or force their parents not to tell them they're safe. Eventually, I think that the people would realize that they had been outsmarted and the Capitol would be able to back off.
I just had a weird question but it will lead to an important gender debate ... What if a woman tribute has the period during the games? Because, you know, such a natural topic its not named neither the books or the movies and goddamit, it's something so important. We talk about girls like Katniss or Clove, which are treated as superheroes, but what could happen if Katniss has her period during the first or the second games, would that make the difference? Cause with no food or water (she almost died from it on the books) period could just be a final withdraw
Each species has a biological desire to have offspring otherwise the species would die off. Modern humans are weird in that they can be socially conditioned to cover-up their biological desires to have children and focus on substitutes, but the biological desire is still there because humans are still like other species at heart.
To avoid having children if you really don't want to have them and you are not forced to do that, not having sex is a good way to avoid it. Unless you just can't keep your pants on. But then it's a choice.

In 12, they go to the community home. But in career districts, maybe they can be adopted

I thought that they had children either because they had not access to contraceptives (prices or forbidden) or because they will become their pension plan, since in a country that treat the districts as slaves they might not have the right to receive a pension once they are too old to work.

I don't think it would ever get to that, actually. People, I've noticed, manage to do risky things ignoring the bad odds by keeping a "not to me" mindset. That's how people do things like getting on cars (and even being careless on a car) despite the high risk it involves. If a couple wanted to have kids, it's a good shot they would keep that hopeful "not to my kid" mindset until they turned to their first reaping year and the chance of it being their kid actually pops up. You can even see, at the beginnin of the hunger games, Katniss reassuring Prim that there's close to no chance because her name is only once. And, to a point, she even believes it.
And even if there was a mass no-kid movement (which I doubt would ever be as widespread as to not have hundreds of kids to be reaped), it's more likely the capitol would go for the contraceptions before even going to consider forced insemination.
I’m not sure if you have done a video in this already, but I was wondering for the hunger games, what was meant to happen in catching fire/ what would have happened if katniss didn’t destroy the arena? Would more people have died and there only been one winner, or all the survivors still survived? - I’m also sorry if this is explained in the book, I haven’t got time to read it yet!
Yeh I agree it’s all about natural survival instinct we are all born with we have no choice in this matter... also I wonder if the capitol due to its advanced genetic engineering somehow managed to make this sexual instinct even stronger for example by using retroviruses to insert specific pieces of genes into humans by putting them in the food they eat or releasing them into the air as gases. But think the theory about ppl having as many children as they can so that the odds of being reaped are lowered makes a lot of sense. It’s like how sardines cluster into massive shoals to reduce their likelihood of being eaten.
And Katniss is 16 at the start of the series so her hormones are jumping out of control so it will be really difficult to have kids in her position
Only a few centuries ago it was normal for human's to loose a lot of their children quite often, mostly diseases, accidents , war etc. (History , medieval period).
It does not make difference if a child is murdered in the games , or ...in real world...is murdered by a drunken driver or in a war as conscripted soldier. And we do risk that our children get murdered by drunken drivers , must serve in an army. It is even a much bigger chance than being reaped for those games.
Back to the games: Most people will just ignore the chance of reaping, or even try to get more children, so at least one survives. Do not forget that there is only one who will take care for you if you grow to old for still working....your own child(ren). There is no retirement payment in the districts for old people. And loosing your child will be much more normal than at this moment in the west due to lack of treatment for ill children, so not only a risk of loosing your child in the games.
Also i wonder, since so Many children die due to starvation etc why so people still haave children. Of course the case might be different with the merchants who have more money, Peeta for example has two brothers. Also i think panen needs kids to work in the districts and as peacekeepers

One thing I wonder about is that the careers are made up of tributes from districts 1, 2 and 4 but in the 74th Hunger Games, none of the careers are from district 4. Why is this?

Think about it, Katniss is able to run from the hob and be at the fence of 12 within a few minutes mind you South Carolina North Carolina tennessee virginia, kentucky and a little bit of georgia is where district 12 is located this is almost 6 american states and the area of kentucky alone is 104 billion metres squared. I don't think anyone in Panem has access to birth control and that includes citizens of the Capitol. Abortion is probably illegal, too, no matter the circumstances. If the Districts stopped having children, the Capitol would probably give incentives, I don't think they'd be making people Get pregnant whether they wanted to or not. No Tributes from a district? They'd probably go after criminals' children from the Capitol, or adult criminals from the Capitol, or people Snow thinks he owed a bad turn to. If the Capitol started forcing people to get pregnant any other way by choice, they'd run the risk of sparking more than a few rebellions and they'd definitely be getting mass suicides.

Makes me wonder about asexuality and/or same gender/same sex attraction, or being intersex or nonbinary. How do people interact around same gender / same sex attraction and/or asexual or otherwise on the asexual spectrum, would they be shamed for not having biological children?

The capitol forces you to have babies right? but what if you can't have babies or like you don't wanna get married to someone. Even though this is unlikely, if they all don't have babies there would be no children. So with no children they can't have the hunger games right?

okay so I've been thinking about this and in Catching Fire, Katniss realizes that she and Peeta are going to be forced to get married, and she wonders if the Capitol will make them have kids. We've seen over and over again how the Capitol works, they are very good at threatening people and manipulating them into doing whatever they want. The Capitol has a long track record of threatening people before inflicting widespread violence. Obviously, as you said, it is impossible for all of Panem to just stop having kids, but say in one district they got close. Let's say District 7, which has about 3 times the population of 12 in the series, but isn't quite as bad off as some of the other districts (and might therefore have the means to do this) was able to decrease the number of babies born in a year to say 30%. Obviously, within a year the Capitol would take notice and realize that something was up and that people were choosing not to have children anymore.
I think that the Capitol's first move would be to target specific families. For example, Mr. and Mrs. X have 2 girls who are 11 and 8. They are still young enough to have more kids but have chosen not to because of the Games. I think the Capitol would send peacekeepers to their house and tell them that if they did not have another child in the next 2 years, their oldest daughter would be reaped for the Games. This could only be pulled off on a small scale because if they tried it on multiple people and more than one or two couples were unable to have another child or unwilling, then they'd run into issues. Because of this, I think this would just be a test run, and they might not even do it at all.
Step two would be more widespread. The Capitol would approach specific families in similar situations and tell them that if they had another child in the next two years, their oldest child would be out of the reaping for life. They could do this to hundreds of families, and it would increase the number of children being born. The beauty of this is that they can target the same families over and over and over again as they continue to have kids. The Capitol would likely take this one step further and threaten couples who don't have kids already by threatening the lives of other family members or something like that.
The thing about this system is that it would provide the population boost needed to keep the lumber industry running smoothly, but likely there would only be a few kids in the reapings each year. This literally wouldn't matter because as long as there are enough kids at the reapings, the people in the other districts would have no idea that most of them are safe. They could maybe even force those kids to look scared or force their parents not to tell them they're safe.
Eventually, I think that the people would realize that they had been outsmarted and the Capitol would be able to back off.

I just had a weird question but it will lead to an important gender debate ... What if a woman tribute has the period during the games? Because, you know, such a natural topic its not named neither the books or the movies and goddamit, it's something so important. We talk about girls like Katniss or Clove, which are treated as superheroes, but what could happen if Katniss has her period during the first or the second games, would that make the difference? Cause with no food or water (she almost died from it on the books) period could just be a final withdraw
Each species has a biological desire to have offspring otherwise the species would die off. Modern humans are weird in that they can be socially conditioned to cover-up their biological desires to have children and focus on substitutes, but the biological desire is still there because humans are still like other species at heart.

To avoid having children if you really don't want to have them and you are not forced to do that, not having sex is a good way to avoid it. Unless you just can't keep your pants on. But then it's a choice.
