The idea that I might want to add my car to a robotaxi fleet to make money while I'm not using it is absurd on its face. To think I'd place my personal vehicle into a robotaxi fleet to be used and abused by the general public is spectacularly delusional. The value calculation ignores opportunity cost ... my personal vehicle would be unavailable for my use while out running robotaxi missions. It has more value parked in my garage available for my use than it ever could as a robotaxi. Should I ever have a mind to enter into the robotaxi business I would shop the used inventory for examples already equipped with FSD to build my fleet.

How many years does it take after a Tesla reveal party before a product appears? 4 years? 5 years? You honestly believe his robot will be working in his factories by the end of the year? Have you seen what the industry leaders are working with and they're nowhere near a release. He's been caught faking recent videos of FSD and the robot and STILL you believe him. With that profit I will buy a few Optimus robots, and rent them to my neighbours for doing some routine jobs on demand ... Love your presentation style. Shame that Tesla have to charge so much in the UK, with all of the additional taxes. For a full spec car the Tesla Model 3 RWD is cheaper than most other EV's available. Kia Nero EV and Hyundai Kona EV were the best options, but were then £45,000 or as good as with Heat Pump, Heated /cooled seats but Tesla Model 3 had all of this and saved me £5,000. I am 6'2" as is my son, so having a car that he could sit behind me was part of the test, as well as ease of entry for me with a bad neck.
Well now I have had my Model 3 for 3 weeks and absolutely love it. Lack of buttons has meant more time with eyes on the road. Not looking for buttons, screen is easy to see your speed and navigation in one glance. My previous Kia E Niro 4+ was good but the Tesla is fantastic.
Tesla pushes forwards, whilst a lot of people just want to go backwards. It is crazy and I want the future. Robo taxis, would be cheap to use, hopefully more plentiful and easy to use, so could be very helpful to those with medical conditions, no car, etc. It would start to alter the question of car ownership and I would think those on the edges of our towns may then not need a car.

It appears you failed to hear what Elon Musk said, that where there were not enough externally owned Teslas in the Robotaxi fleet it would supplement with its own vehicles.
But why not do it just with Tesla's own vehicles as you suggested? It's the economics. Consider them. If I make a "Model 2" that costs me $18k and sell it today for $25k I immediately gained back my investment in car plus $7k profit. If the buyer adds it to the fleet for an average 8 hours a day that's 56 hours a week. If the car averages 25 paid miles an hour that's 1400 miles a week. If Tesla gets $0.30 a mile that's $420 a week profit, or $21,840 a year. The owner pays for the electricity, the cleaning and upkeep, the tires, insurance, etc. It can use all that money to make more cars, build factories, do R&D, or whatever.
So the company is $46,840 ahead after the first year.
Now assume that Tesla puts its own car in the fleet. It loses $7,000 in gross profit, has to carry $18,000 on its books, pays for all the upkeep, etc. So let's assume it nets $0.50 a mile. It would have to drive 50,000 to cover just the production cost plus the lost profit. It needs more miles to pay for maintenance, insurance, etc.
It is better business to sell the cars.

While it is interesting to compare the robotaxi to elevators, I don't think building owners who house an elevator had to pay a subscription fee or a percentage of each lift. We can easily assume that Tesla will take some kind of cut out of the taxi service between the passenger and the robotaxi owner. It would be great if it was open to third parties to work outside of Tesla's app but they're going to further monopolize another industry.

Agree, App mockup is the easy bit. However they have accelerated the timeline to build dedicated Robotaxi's, and will reveal it on 8/8. Not perfect, but 99% of the time it is doing the job of a competent driver. Of course, this WILL continue to improve with more video training data. .
I think that it will be the "conventional" body, assembled in a slightly different way (maybe front/ rear castings "pre-assembled" as per unboxed?) Then meeting at "final assembly.
Agree regarding the 48v, steer by wire... Plus electric brakes??
That gives the cheapest "old model" piss8 (could THIS be "Juniper"?)
    .
Meanwhile, as they toad test the systems on the 3² and Y² the full unboxed system will be perfected.
    .
Still don't think its a 2 seater (London Cab regs/ Wheelchair?)
    .
If it's "cyber like" I dont think it will be Stainless steel.
    Logic would dictate
    Cube.
    Sliding door,

There is always the chance that Teslabot labor will drive the cost of labor in Tesla factories so low that there is not as much need for cheaper labor in India.

  • @nickmcconnell1291
    @nickmcconnell1291 5 месяцев назад

Here is how to interpret what Tesla announced:
    1) Elon finally won the argument (described in his auto-biography) to ditch the $25,000 car based on the gen 3 platform. Two things formed this... cheaper batteries from suppliers and true FSD coming very quickly.
    2) Instead, Tesla will use their existing lines to make this more affordable car and other models. Tesla will use some of the unboxed techniques to make them cheaper to manufacture but has warned that the margins on these cars will be slim.
    3) Tesla, at first, will make no more than a million of these more affordable cars as they max out their existing factories to 3 million.
    4) Robo-taxi will be made fully with the unboxed method and they will start making them in Austin to supply the first test cities with taxis.
    5) After robo-taxis launch in certain cities, and while Tesla tussles with regulators and if things go promisingly, the new Giga factory in Mexico will begin construction. Tesla knows that it won't need this factory online for a few years while FSD proves itself to regulators in various regions and countries. This factory will then make the robo-taxi for N. American continent. There probably will be others elsewhere in the world if the taxis are allowed there.
BTW... the above also may explain Drew's departure. Drew and his team has already finished the design of the robo-taxi unboxed assembly line. Given Tesla's decisions it appears there are to be no new platforms to be designed and built in the near future. Drew likes challenges and probably saw work ahead that didn't excite him as much as new ground up engineering does. Just a guess but probably part of his decision.

Tesla is not a car company, it is a software development company.

Yes, software development. FSD is *years* behind schedule, and the latest FSD software still makes mistakes every day. 100 percent human supervision is required. So disappointing.

Great video Will. Your sense of awe properly captures Tesla's technological prowess. (Same with SpaceX... and Neuralink... and DOJO...) I'm planning to add my Model Y to the robotaxi network to add to my (TSLA) stock holdings; will let you know how it goes.

I hope to do the same with my M3.. no doubt a few years before regulations allow that here though. Hope to have a Ludicrous by then so on second thoughts, perhaps not! 😂
