    I was taught basically the same thing in isshinryu karate. The thing is you must act quickly for a bigger man than oneself can easily snap your neck and if not careful you may do it for them. The true key is to get the chin down before the choke can be fully locked in and applied and if the person that gets hold of you has superior training you are screwed. and not in a good way.

      This is not true. The krav maga system is built upon sumo and wrestling. As long as you space and base or grab the head and put dead wait on the attacker you can use any wrist escape

    If that choke is locked In and your head and leg position is correct then this will not work. This relies on the choke not being locked in and the body positioning being incorrect. So against amateurs on the street it may work.

    Great compliments to you all and your site. It is very clear and efficient.Regulary I study your movies. I learned 5 years kravmaga in the Netherlands and I learned more than in the other martial arts in the 25 years before. Now I'm 63 years old and not following grouptraining, but for myself I practice it weekly. It get me in shape, and working with agressive adolescents for many (40) years I now what to do if talking and psychological tactics don't work any more. Just that gives me an alert but also some rest because I know what to do.
    The joke is I never have to use it because I have that rest besides my psychological tactics. Krav maga in my opinion is the most efficient and reality based and tested martial art.

      Drunk, untrained guys expecting no resistance will most likely never rear naked choke you.
      The only folks who would really apply a rear-naked correctly are the ones that will leap onto your back and get hooks in and put your ass out. None of the techniques in this video are particularly useful against a person who knows what they're doing. The best way to apply a rear naked choke is with hooks in. The best way to defend is remain calm, attack the locking arm and try to make space for the chin. Then, remove the hooks and roll to their guard. Then, you GNP and attempt guard passes from there. This video, and Krav Maga in general, are pretty silly.

It just creates a lot of false sense of security for a lot of MMA enthusiast's because they just consider it the best when it is not. Krav is a combination of various forms of martial arts btw and for multiple attackers.

    I thought I'd watch this because I felt nostalgic and fancied a chuckle. The first time I ever encountered this choke was many years ago when I was 16 during Hap Ki Do training. I had a particularly sadistic instructor who loved to demonstrate on students that once this choke (what the video describes as "the blood choke") is on, you have 7 seconds before you lose consciousness. He would actually count it out as we turned purple and passed out. I remember asking my instructor if there was any real way of escaping this choke and I remember him laughing and saying that there are countless BS escape methods out there the only way to legit escape the choke is to never let anyone put it on; it must be interrupted before everything is in place, which is more or less what I saw in the video. It's more an exercise in avoidance than escape because if someone successfully puts this on you and they know what they're doing you're as good as f****d! No amount of stripes on your belt will save you.

And 4, this demo showed the first guy letting the other guy settle in the choke and then apply it, then he didn't let the other guy settle in the choke for it to be a balanced demo. Wow! Martial Arts sure brings out the emotions in people. First thing that came to mind while watching this video was: and what the h*ll are you supposed to do if the person actually knows BJJ, and takes you down and sinks the RNC? I believe that there is a place for contingency training, but I know from experience that once an RNC is sunk, it's all over. Your best bet is to learn techniques that prevent the RNC in the first place. Once could argue that is exactly what this represents, but I noticed that the Krav Maga proponents in the comments didn't do this. I am an omnivore by nature, and will take anything that could work seriously, but "could work" does not mean it will work. Each person will determine how effective they apply any technique from any discipline. My long background in various striking arts mean I am partial to them, but I am not fool enough to believe that anything requiring precision will work very well in a self-defense situation. Yes, I have showboated, and gotten away with it, but I have also been taken down by a wrestler and thoroughly embarrassed when I had to beg to be released. In my 30+ years of fighting I have irrefutably seen self-defense systems that stress gross motor skills thoroughly dominate every other form. It doesn't look impressive to the eye, but it sure is effective. I have spent a great deal of time learning to control my psychological state of mind in stressful situations, but more often than not I have experienced a serious loss of fine motor skill when a street fight erupts. In a planned fight, you have time to practice all of the great psychological methods of preparation, but almost all "real life" situations, whether you are an average joe, a cop, a bouncer, or bodyguard, there is no time for preparation. BTW, I have spent the better part of the last month recovering from a nasty bite to my inner thigh. I kicked a guy in the head, and got taken down for my trouble. Off of my back, I jockeyed for an armbar, but my opponent did not give me the opening needed. I did however find myself in the position to triangle him, so I tried to apply it. He had a very thick neck and shoulders, so I needed to adjust the submission with my hand for it to be effective. In the seconds before I could effectively do this the bastard bit me!!! The human bite is a NASTY thing! At 52 I didn't expect a street fight with a meth crazed punk to be so instructive... OK, I digress. My point is that no matter how much experience you have, regardless of the forms that experience takes, almost anything can, and probably will happen in real life. I escaped with a few knots on my head, and a nasty bite to my thigh, but I managed to overcome my opponent to the level where he quit the fight and left me to nurse my wounds. It could have been better, but it could certainly have ended much worse. Peace.

      I was up to date on my Tetanus shot. I did get an antibiotic injection, followed by a long course of oral antibiotics. It's funny, reading my account of that incident is interesting. The entire fight, of which I only addressed about 25%, lasted maybe two minutes. It was one of the longest unplanned street fights I have ever been involved in. I say unplanned because I have taken part of combat that while it did not occur in the ring or dojo was technically a bit planned. That provided for a sense of control not present in a true street fight. Generally my opponents were also skilled in martial arts and while not always pretty, they lacked the desperate feel and fear found in a street encounter. I vividly remember feeling fear a couple of times during this encounter. I do not want to glorify myself or the fight in any way. It really sucked!!

    Anyone from IKMF or KMG on here? In those curricula (P2), the defender rotates the other way, towards the attacker's choking hand rather than into his armpit. (I always remember it as "everything - my hands, my chin, my body rotation - goes towards the hand the attacker is attempting to put around my neck.") So we would grab the front forearm as here, but then pull down (elbow out for leverage for a RNC) and rotate our body, chin down, towards the "opening." That's the opposite direction as here. I was taught that rotating into the attacker's elbow risks not extricating from the choke as fast as possible. If the attacker is twice your size and strength (and as they say, the guy who's gonna try to choke ya is the guy who can!) then speed is all ya got! Luca?

      Hello, you're right about what you've said (P2 curricula), however don't focus too much on the differences between the Krav-Maga federations, as long as it saves your life in the street who cares what the method or technique is called ;).
      I'm not keen on grades, they won't save you in a life-threat situation, many people I know (good people) do train really hard to pass their P4, G1, etc. but they forget one thing ; even if the technique is effective, they won't be capable of using it under high level of stress unless they don't train in a realistic way. (I don't know you, I'm not trying to teach you anything, I'm just scared for those good folks willing to defend themselves and fooling themselves).
      Keep it simple (it's very often the most effective), grab/strike the groin, gouge the eyes, bite, use something as a weapon, everything is good for you to stay alive.
      Stay safe,
      cheers
      P.-S. sorry for my poor level of English.

      Hey KMG P4 here, and turning towards the hands is for similar but different choke holds actually my friend. and in that scenario you want to put your chin to shoulder immediately after pulling the hands or "knot" down. this way you maintain air to lungs and can get out easier. there really isn't a way to get out of a proper rear naked choke hold. which is why the man says to do what he examples before the attacker can complete the choke

      vince gantalao KMG G4 here, key checkpoint is to get your chin to the opposite shoulder before the choke sinks in. What we learn in P2 will save your life if you’re early enough. But often times that’s not the case. I’ve been put into a proper rear naked choke before and I had to fight to get chin to shoulder while biting the attacker on the bicep before I could execute the rest of the technique - hands like hooks, striking down at base of choking hands thumb, controlling hands at your chest, stepping back and out with near leg...etc etc
      Long story short, chin to shoulder - key checkpoint. It’ll save your life for 3 seconds longer and allow you to actually do something

    very cool move, but unrealistic if you are fighting a trained killer or trained fighter. i have never seen anyone be able to bend forward when a rear naked is sunk in as deep as it is in this video. i agree with bas rutin, a broken neck would come before the choke is actually broken. this would work if the chin was down and they didn't have their forearm across the throat or artery. this technique i would label as an escape to use at the very beginning of the choke before the arm reaches across the neck. I have not had anyone successfuly use a groin shot on me or other fighters once they have a rear naked set in. a proper standing rear naked the hip and thigh are placed along the spine and butt once the choke is set in order to increase leverage and prevent any kind of groin attack.

      For both of yall, I love krav maga. Dont get me wrong, but the choke here has a lot of space, and also the "victim" didnt have his posture broken, if someone who knows how to do a rear naked choke, gets you in a rear naked choke, it's impossible to do what is shown in this video, and of course we should always avoid conflict, but the reason we train is so if that does happen, we arent screwed

      Your answer makes me fell better about myself. So you are saying that no eye gauging or groin hit would work. Long time ago I got into a fight with a trained guy (I didn't know) and he rear choked me standing. I found no way out, I could not find his eyes nor his groins. Nothing worked so this haunts me sometimes especially since a fight expert on quora tild me that "every move has a counter and fighting is a contest". So I felt dumb and now I tried to see what is the way out. The ways out in this video (as a guy that was choked for real) are bullshit bedtime stories.

    I like what Bas Rutten says in a podcast with Joe Rogan. "Never *uck with someone who has a dominant position over you." He said it best that if he has a choke on you and you try and gouge his eyes, he's going to break your neck THEN let go. This is not the movies. Bas even had a great way to defend the choke. He dipped his chin and bent forward, then stepped to one side and grabbed the attackers legs and lifted them off the ground. Now the guy doesn't have the leverage to apply the choke properly. He then dropped the guy and came down on top of him with all his weight. Generally speaking this kind of move then makes it possible to slip into a position that negates the choke entirely.

    Unless you are actually attacked or in a MMA fight, most people do not apply the REAR NAKED CHOKE properly to begin with. This gives you an advantage . A simple thug will simply wrap one arm around your neck, not using the "blade" of his forearm to cut off your windpipe. Likely the other arm will be grabbing something else, like your hand as you reach up. Great distraction to tuck chin, and even potentially bite arm if needed as you try to hit nuts and eyes. if the attacker is shorter, they will try to bring you down quickly but a good butt thrust creates separation and allows you to twist as in video. A much taller person creates different issues, but they must bend slightly to get a good choke putting them slightly off balance, and if you lean forward slightly as they pull back, you go

  • @kjvwolfslayer
    @kjvwolfslayer 9 лет назад +8

    Krav is good stuff for sure, but I have to say, If you can escape an RNC, it's because it wasn't applied correctly by someone with strength. The second it's applied, your strength will fade fast because your oxygen intake fades fast. Watch the UFC fights where one is applied correctly. No one gets out of it. It's tap tap and game over.

    • @imllendream
      @imllendream 9 лет назад

      That is the goal: Apply that technique in the video to escape naked choke and hopefully destroy your enemy or run as fast as you can. There is no way you can get away if your strong muscled enemy is in perfect naked choke & position. Once your enemy switches behind you and run his wrist blade thru your neck then you must know that life & death is gonna come. You have 5sec to execute such technique in a manner most effective to you, as you only have 50% oxygen & 50% of chance to capitalize. When you're caught in real brutal fight situation where mercy is non-existent, will you wait for your enemy to do that perfect naked choke on you or grab that 5 seconds of chance to stay alive? It's your life.

    • @jmpsaved
      @jmpsaved 9 лет назад +1

      There are many escape techniques to get out of he RNC. As far as UFC goes, the people caught by the move can not use all of the escapes possible because of the rules and thus some moves are illegal. So even people caught in a perfect RNC could have still had chances otherwise.

    • @kjvwolfslayer
      @kjvwolfslayer 9 лет назад +2

      jmpsaved The RNC's used in the UFC are usually on the ground and the legs are locked holding the person so they can't do anything but tap. A standing one could be escaped, but on the ground done right, not a chance.

    This is useful if the attacker does not expect a retaliation reflex. I don't know even a single MA for self defense,but to be honest my training is only psychological,not physical. Always be on nails and always be on your calm and working state.Divide your mind in these two halves and mantain balance in both of them. Don't panic and don't try to pick fights. That's my golden rule. In terms of a robbery attempt,remember that every random person you're walking every day near you can rob you in a instant if thought to. Your most valuables are your wallet and your cell device. Don't let any random person got near them and always maintain a full grip to the part of your clothing,where your wallet is.For the female counterpart,grab a firm hold to your purse and use it as a weight shifter to send him to the ground pummeling. It's like pushing your attacker sideways with the weight of your purse in a rapid succession to the ground. Street robbers seek easy catches and does not expect any kind of retaliation from their female targets. Well in short,always I mean always expect some kind of attack to your well being,while in the same time keeping yourself calm and calculative!Don't get yourself in fights if avoided and don't panic!

Anything that requires so much movement without opponet responding will usually not work., moves like these only work when power , strength or speed are higher than adversaries same levels., which is just stronger or faster besting slower or weaker, not a real martial art but more about physcial dominance., have the girl do it when attacker is not passive.

      @thejoshbtv 10 лет назад +4

      It can work for shorter people. It actually makes it a little harder for them to get the choke on you since, when you get down in your stance, you are a lower target. I'm taking Krav training right now and just went through getting out of holds last week. Another technique to use in a rear naked choke, the side that they are choking you with, lets go with right arm, once you are in your defensive stance, you take your right arm and essentially throw a horizontal elbow back into their right side ribs. This doesnt really hurt them since you are hitting them with your tricep, but it throws their body over to you left side where you can then throw a hard elbow straight back followed by a hammer fist to the groin area. After that you should be able to slip out and escape or turn on them offensively and bury a couple knees in them. Hope this info helps.

Years ago when I was competing I tapped out of a fight only once. My defense for this choke did not work as I'd been taught it would. I can see where every aspect of this technique would be vital to its effectiveness and I can't wait to practice it. Yeah, I'm an old man now, but I still love to mix it up-JuJitsu, TKD & bits & pieces from other arts. Thumbs up.

      +OG of OJ Very true. It's a common mistake in BJJ, sometimes even among blue belts. I always turn my head inside and towards my choking arm, and I keep it flat against either the opponent's neck or shoulder. In street it lessens the chance of an eye gouge, and in sport it adds another layer to the "backpack" concept of a hooks-in seatbelt grip. The tighter I am, the harder it's going to be for my opponent to turn.

    Guys, don't be fooled by some keyboard experts here pretending to know well about martial arts. You better need to humble yourself instead of arrogantly sayin your martial arts is better than the rest, mma is better than this and that, etc. Because end of the day its the YOU who makes the difference in actual situation - whether you make it or break it & regardless of your training and expertness. Before you dare to say Krav is BS coz it has no huge reputation in MMA sport, then think again deeply. MMA is a sport that has rules in fighting. The one who has techniques that suits the rules perfectly has utmost advantage. That is why no MMA trainer & champs from UFC, MFC, etc. would stand strong on ground to say their MMA style is the most effective than Krav in actual combat killing fields where there's nothing but one simple rule: the one who kills the opponent, and kills more to survive wins. Soldiers exposed in tremendous warfares use Krav as ticket to survive - not the ticket you bought for UFC MMA style.

      @@spartanmerc1 I don't disagree with you. I have yet to find an actual effective RNC defense from standing if the guy knows what he's doing and has it sinked in. When training with hard resistance I actually improvised a move that surprisingly worked. I just took one of my free hands and upper cut palm striked his forward elbow from below. The elbow of his non choking arm. I had never seen it done before and was just a desperate move but it actually jerked his arm and losened the choke. Every other technique I have tried simply failed against a well trained MMA fighter. Once I was able to reach backbend a finger back but that is hugely risky. The think is if they bumb your knee from behind and break your posture you are pretty much fucking done. Its one of the hardest holds to escape from and I have yet to find a sure fire method. Maybe moving your hips to the side and hammer fisting back into his balls is the best first option. I'll keep trying and testing different techniques until I find the one I think would work best against a 250lb MMA pro who has the chock in deep. I think there may very well be no technique to escape it so at the very least you can try the ball grab/strike foot stomp shit and hope it buys you a second or two.

    Okay, IF you can hit the eyes or the balls it will hurt the attacker. Fine.
    But contrary to the opinion of some, the attacker isn't going to let you sit there and do whatever. They will defend. I've had guys try to eye gouge me during a RNC. It's easy to avoid. Same with the groin grab.
    Also keep in mind that the defender can not see behind them, so he can not see what side the attackers eyes are on.
    The thing I ask is, why not just train the known, proven defenses taught in legit grappling classes? It isn't going to hurt you. Hitting the eyes or the groin is a good tip, but if that doesn't work, what then?

      Boudpainful Short answer, If the attacker is adequately motivated you are screwed in that situation.
      Longer answer,
      The only ways I have seen to escape a sunk RNC involve difficult to execute nerve attacks, that have to be done by feel, while defending both the opponents arms with your other arm and chin position. or straight pain compliance, which is unreliable at best. In addition to being difficult to do to someone behind you.
      That being said, I have escaped a similar situation where I was seated and someone caught me with a RNC by surprise.
      I had recently learned two pressure points, one in the hollow directly beneath the ear, and the other inside the jawline, about an inch down from the rear. Right before i blacked out i grabbed those two points with my index finger and thumb respectively, in a claw type grip, and squeezed with everything i had. He screamed and let go. He was just a bully like in your situation though, so his motivation was probably not the same as someone looking to kill.
      the interesting thing about the technique i used, which i do not guarantee but is definitely better than nothing, is that you can practice it on yourself. Since the hand position is the same with your own head and that of someone choking you from behind. From testing on myself I have found that the claw style grip makes it far more effective than otherwise. It really makes you want to get away from the sensation, which is hard to describe and not just pain. It makes you feel panicky.
      If you can make them move their head away from you (regardless of how), to the full extension of your arm. they cannot keep you in the choke. Of course at that point you have given them your arm. And they can do some nasty thing with that if they know how.
      Anything more reliable is stuff I would not want to try to explain via text. Let alone to someone I do not know. Nor am I anywhere near the level to be teaching it.

  • @cz75fanatic

    Yeah this doesn't work. For anyone wanting to argue against me on this one, I'd like to direct you over to Bas Rutten. He tackled this subject in an exceptionally brilliant and equally comedic way.
    This whole thing is assuming that your attacker isn't trained, hasn't set the choke, and doesn't intend to kill you. The likely hood of that in their part of the world seems a little heavy on wishful thinking.
    Could the average American on the street use this as a tactic.... probably. Hell, I'd imagine that they could probably get away with it 95% of the time if the situation was reasonable. However, in a Military Combat setting, I'll always defer back to Bas on this one.

      The quote does not really make sense because if the psychopath is already putting their arm on your neck, there is no time to wonder about whether he might break your neck or not; all you know is that you have to resist. Neck breaks happen in Hollywood movies and no tough guy has any true experience with breaking someone's neck so worrying about that is unrealistic for that reason as well. Finally, these tough guys who say the kind of things you quote are embarrassed to admit that a 13 year old soccer player could bring them down with one kick. They have spent their lives in fake tough guy martial arts having their egos circulate around movie bullshit. Do you think that they are going to admit that half of their stuff could be foiled by someone who is not scared to fight back and go for the kill right away? Of course not. They have created and actively defend a masculine subculture where those issues are belittled and covered up with more tough guy talk and pats on the back from their circle of friends.
