I used VHT high temp paints back in the 80s and they worked great. I think EPA regulations must have come into play in the ensuing years because I haven't been able to make the coatings last even while using the same prep techniques I've used for years.
I'd say your right, there always seems to be that 1 ingredient that makes something work 110% better but is always bad for something or causes cancer there forced to take out lol I really find that to be true these days. Most everything I use seems to always be a lesser quality product these days vs back in the day

I used this stuff in the silver flavored variety to paint a transmission. Looked great just like a brand new transmission and very durable not like regular silver paint.
You didn't tape off the ports? That seems like something you might want to do, or does it not matter? I'm on a turbo platform, so not sure I want to shoot that stuff back up into the turbo.

I have a dc sports header, it came ceramic coated. And it yellows around the head area. But everything else stayed the same. I looked this up to save money on a future header by just painting it. But the DC brand is carb legal.

Aircraft remover paint stripper is garbage nowadays they took the methylene chloride out of it but you can purchase methylene chloride by itself and add it to the gel paint strippers that they have now that says non-methylene chloride. Just look at what the paint stripper says it doesn’t have in it and you can pretty much guarantee that’s what works . You used to be able to buy aircraft paint stripper and put it on and it would be blistering the paint in 7-8 minutes. It only took a couple morons to take that paint stripper apply at barehanded with no respirator in their basement closet breathing in the fumes to die for them to take the stuff off the market . Just my two cents . That will save you money if you do what I said . But what do I know I’m just a guy that strip stuff for a living
I just bought some longtubes yesterday and they have the black paint on them and I was wondering what can I use to get rid of the old paint so I can repaint them with high temp paint
a torch or installed on the engine running with a fan and hood up in drive way not garage, then dab of alchohol in water and green pad scuff and clean then a cloth or tshirt with the water mix.
@@Monsters-bs1vm if you dont want to use primer and would like a bad ass paint for headers, Buy the Cerakote C series. You spray it with spray gun. Look it up on RUclips. It withstands 1800 degrees and you don't need primer, only sandblasted surface and spray it out of the can and its air dry. When you sandblast, just rinse and clean with brake cleaner and that's it.
Powernation, the instructions on the can read that the headers require baking at 250 degrees before placing them on the engine for the 30 minute idle test you did. Did you bake them first ?

The switches they zoomed in on in the video were labeled exhaust fan and pump out. I’m sure they have more than adequate ventilation to spray can a header.
How hot did they get as just bare steel, I think the reason for coating is for getting lower temperature not just for looks. & yes it did start yellowing so the light grey coating will look crappy real soon after.
In the video you mention new unpainted headers. All headers I'm familiar with come with a coating to protect them from rusting unless they are jet coated or have some type of thermal coating. What is your prefered method of removing this light coat of paint that has been applied the factory? Thanks....Chris Lynn
Hey you can wipe that coating off with lacquer thinner. Take a soaking wet rag & set it on the header let it soften up it comes off easy. Or just run them for a while. Many ways
I have an aluminum intake on my Chevy 302 engine and I painted it Chevy red and now it is flaking off with less than 200 miles on it. What would you suggest I paint my intake with to keep it Chevy red? Thanks
You will need you scuff/sand you're aluminum intake then spray "etch primer" over it (do not sand the etch primer nor scuff it up)) once you apply etch primer then you can paint your intake.. However if your into performance i truly strongly suggest no one paint intake manifolds as do to it coating your entire manifold trapping more heat from the engine into your air/fuel ratios but whatever tickles your pickle!
Richard there have been quite a few tests done challenging the idea of painting intercoolers. They test the black painted intercooler vs the raw aluminum ones and it didn’t make a difference.
sounds good high temp paint in general. What about rustoleum. Painted my exhaust with VHT 1200 Primer, Rustoleum 2000 black, and rustoleum clear coat 2000 degree and holds up great.
It’s your choice I prefer to cure the primer close to the operating temperature and then apply the topcoat and then care of that as well before putting her back into the engine bay it does make it more durable and more scratch resistant
The wrap will hold moisture and condensation and cause rust and rot on the steel fast the wrap is not a good choice. But just my 2 cents. I understand it’s sacrificial on a turbo set up.
I think that’s kind of obvious but I will indulge . Strip the header to Bare steel. And then take the headers and bring them into your Dino room mail them to your engine bring it up to operating temperature burn off any oil and then coat them with VHT. LOL do the first part unless you have a Dino room then you can do the second part also . But in all seriousness the devil is in the details any paint ceramic whatever it’s only gonna be as good as your prep . If you’re lazy and you leave oil and grease were all pink or oil from your skin or rust. Don’t blame the coding when it fails blame the prep. Short answer strip the header Bare. Follow the directions if you have an oven to put them in cure them in the oven after the primer .Then proceed to add your color

I've always been to told to remove that coating down to the bare metal or it would make any top coats peel and flake off when it burnt off underneath. But I've never tested that theory and just always removed it lol
@jigga jaw We've had the professional ceramic internally and externally on a set of quality stainless steel extractors for 5 years and after an hour there touchable. After spending several thousand on a complete new wiring harness it to is as good as new. Yes a pricy product but nothing better.

No, getting it hot is what cures it... Plastikote header paint claims you need to get it installed within 8 hours after painting, or, you can bake it at 200C for 2 hours (or 300C for 1 hour). I would give it an hour or so before installing and running, so that you dont leave any marks/fingerprints in it
I would paint them first to prevent the rust, then wrap them with titanium. The titanium wrap only insulates the heat within the pipes, it doesn't prevent them form rusting.
Also, you can just pour ATF into the headers and wipe them down on the outside with an ATF coated rag, then do the same thing in the video. Just cook the ATF onto the headers and it will prevent rust just as well, then you can wrap them too.
I like how you showed how paint can be burnt off with the stock paint on the header. But i assume you would use back the same black color (Or at least one of the 6 colors) with grey primer as proof that you used the products separately. But you used Grey on grey. And these would not show very well on camera if the paint failed or burned off revealing bare steel which is almost the same color as grey.
You should probably call VHT. Or email them as this is a product they’re testing and not their product. Just asked to be transferred to the technical department or send a technical department an email. What you’re asking for is more specialized better to contact the manufacture this was just a test a visual one at that.
@@utooberblooper I had my "fucking eyes open" and spraying it with a degreaser and wiping isn't scuffing SMH, but to the other guy who asked the answer or at least my opinion is yes your should at least hit it with a course scotch Brite pad or some 400-600 grit paper. I'd say they probably did but left that part out maybe, or they didn't do it lol but it'll adhere better if u do. Also u wanna remove that coating that comes on new headers if u didn't catch that, a lot of people don't have the luxury of putting them off and burning it off then removing and repainting that easy or its just to much work lol but it comes off fairly easy and usually removing it will scuff it up enough to repaint just make sure your clean all the dust and stuff before painting
I painted my manifold red with that 2000 agree spray can I let it try and sit and when I turned it on and drove for about an hour and a half it faded the color away why did that happen

Love them, but I gave up ordering them online because 2 out 3 I get always has rust on threaded area and all around that metal on top. Got tired of sending them back lol
I wish they had examples of how each color looks. Bc they have cast iron grey, flat aluminum, flat grey, regular grey, and all the tops look the same color to me. I would like to see how each color differ, but u know, that's too much like right for vht to make it simple

Absolutely, I use the high temp grill paint for primer though it sticks way better and cost less, then I use vht for whatever color but if u just want black or silver that grill paint is the way to go
I agree if all u want is a black or a silver! That shit stays on and won't flake off or fade much. If I paint something high heat with a color I usually use the grill paint for a primer lol serious I think it works way better for this kinda stuff
I used vht high heat engine enamel on my motorcycle cylinder. The black sprayed on great. I let it dry for 5 days. Yeah it said 7 but who has that time to wait. I sprayed on vht high heat gloss clear coat and it lifted the black paint and primer right off. It was horrible. Sorry but I’m not using their paint or duplicolor paint ever again. It was a complete waste of my time
I found this to be true in most cases but I still use primer because I've always been told it seals up the metal pores a little better and also smooths out the surface better too especially when paint older headers that's not new out of the box
Or its just an extra $10 a can they make on a paint job telling people they have to use it lol I do use there matte clearcoat too just cause it helps with scratching and gives it a little better finish

My brother used primer first and then the paint with good results, before on another set of headers he only used paint and it flaked off

always prep your stuff. Id sandblast or atleast clean It up first to get the rust off of it. Better adheasion
Definitely remove any most down to the metal, 80 grit will go fastest but anything between 80-220

If one can afford the costs, thermal ceramic coating is the only way to go. Unbelievable the reduced under bonnet temperatures.

I did everything exactly as they said to it was 4 stage paint job and in my 98 ram V10 it burnt off any bends after 3 days

Would you recommend this product on cast iron manifolds? I would first sand down the manifolds clean them then use it.

It's funny how they say it's important to follow the prep instructions to the letter, and I have a can of this stuff right in front of me. I quote from the can: "Scuff/sand surface with a red scotch brite pad or equivalent."

Did this four an exhaust on my fourwheeler didn't last 20 minutes and I scuffed it up, did 2 coats of primer and 4 coats of paint.

3. Use rubbing alchohol
4. Primer
5. Paint
6. Then cure

Absolutely, I use the high temp grill paint for primer though it sticks way better and cost less, then I use vht for whatever color but if u just want black or silver that grill paint is the way to go

I agree if all u want is a black or a silver! That shit stays on and won't flake off or fade much. If I paint something high heat with a color I usually use the grill paint for a primer lol serious I think it works way better for this kinda stuff

I used vht high heat engine enamel on my motorcycle cylinder. The black sprayed on great. I let it dry for 5 days. Yeah it said 7 but who has that time to wait. I sprayed on vht high heat gloss clear coat and it lifted the black paint and primer right off. It was horrible. Sorry but I’m not using their paint or duplicolor paint ever again. It was a complete waste of my time

You have to prep them right. Mine are almost 4 years old since I did them, but they need redone again.
Motip vht paints don't require a primer...nice test tho boys
I found this to be true in most cases but I still use primer because I've always been told it seals up the metal pores a little better and also smooths out the surface better too especially when paint older headers that's not new out of the box
Or its just an extra $10 a can they make on a paint job telling people they have to use it lol I do use there matte clearcoat too just cause it helps with scratching and gives it a little better finish
