@@eliseskeleton7397 my mom has been in business for 50 years and what we have found is that the kids that are coming around don't seem to have the necessary skills coming out of high school like they had 10 or 15 years ago. Now on the other hand there are a small percentage that seem to get it they understand, and they are self-motivated to learn outside of the textbook. Then there is even further smaller percentage that are driven to get off their Duff and become entrepreneurs. Now in the Branson Missouri market for retail stores and the like one is hard-pressed to find anyone really wanting to work or sell stuff at all. The Branson employees seem to only want a paycheck and run the cash register. Branson employees drive my mom nuts. My Mom feels that she should just do it herself and not bother hiring help. I on the other hand want to change this mentality with my mom but I will not abandon the 50 years of skills my mom has learned in retail sales. I think also the market in which you are selling makes a difference too. I have made it clear with my mom about my intentions with our retail store. I will b changing things to work with online marketing and looking at Springfield Missouri to open a second store and find good solid help who want grow.

I have to say your videos are amazingly made you know that young people hardly pay attention but I as a 17 year old find your videos are worth every second it just feels like you are teaching common truths that nobody tells you about in school I really think your videos are worth more than platinum
Finally someone speaka about exactly what I feel about hiring the right people. Too often people with with great attitudes are passed on an opportunity where they could've been trained the skills to become even greater to grow within and grow the company.

Hi Dan, good video, I can relate to it especially when you say people are complicated, the best team wins, and hire for attitude and train for skills. In my opinion there is nothing more important in any organization than the people that work in it, smart good people adapt and find solutions, I have started a few companies from the ground up and raised millions from venture capital funds. And I found that, there was no time to train and babysit my employees, I needed them to hit the ground running, smart people with good and positive attitude learn and make things happen. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Dan for this video. I realize my attitude and performance have worsened. The video gives clear examples so I’m able to backtrack and analyze my actions. It’s seriously helpful for my situation and negative and lazy mindset.
You made me doing the same thing now Sifu. Previously 0.4 book a year, now a book that i like per week and I feeel so broaden, I cannot believe it.

Totally true! Sometimes it’s also about the team dynamics and energy. A bad environment can make a hardworking person not work as hard while I have seen moments with people who aren’t self motivated but with the right people they become pretty ambitious. Great leaders know how to create strong team chemistry between an entire team.

Brilliant. Seeing your perspective on this-especially the Russian doll principle-makes me realize how many organizations (whether companies or volunteer groups) I’ve seen have accidentally limited their own growth when not considering attitude in the hiring process.

Totally agree! Most of "bosses" consider themselves as general of an army. Their staff are the officers soldiers, etc...how many the play the open minded during the interview, but then they turn in "Hey! you are not paid to think!". So..the truth most of bosses are afraid to hire smart and capable peoples because they are afraid to be fooled, betrayed, etc...The best boss is the one able to bring ALL the staff to same level of importance, and lead them to a common vision. That s my 2 cent

Great lecture Sifu. I think your mindset and the way you handle your business and employee's should be something taught to kids as they are growing up. Like Dan Pena says they don't teach the important things for business in schools. This lecture should be taught to kids in elementary school to help establish their foundation. Then reinforced in high school. So if people decide not to pursue any more advanced degrees or training thats ok because they will have the right foundation and knowledge to go forward in their own business pursuits. The biggest problem with education is its grossly outdated and it uses things like standardized tests to merit what someone should do in their life. Its been show many times that they were wrong. Esp when people who were looked down upon with their test results out paced and out performed their peers when it came to doing things in real life. Great talk Sifu, Cheers.
This make perfect sense. I was pondering for a while now about my work place. In the beginning, I felt as if the organization was moving at a very slow pace; however, lately, I have a mixed feeling that it's going backward. This concludes everything; the organization is not right for me, and I am moving at a faster pace while being always self-driven. I love your videos Sifu Dan! You're absolutely right in that PMA positive mental attitude is the most important attribute when deciding to hire the right people. I agree 100 percent that attitude determines altitude.
I bombed my interview for a manufacturer manager's position, but knew I have leadership skills and experience thanks to the military. My business/management degree and resume didn't equate to shit in the civilian world and that once bothered me until I came across your videos, which made me understand how I'm knowledgeable to where I'm able to put 100% into starting my own business and make it grow.
1. Lead by example; don't be a hypocrite.
2. Focus on finding motivated people, not on motivating people.
3. An effective leader must first be an even more effective student.

Hey Mr. Dan Lok I just wanted to say that I really like your content it's one of the best if not one of the Greatest RUclips Channels out there! I have learned so much from you, I feel that your teachings from your videos are gradually changing my life around, I have almost has stopped entirely watching T.V. because the majority of T.V. Shows and Movies nowadays Suck a lot and I read more books than I have ever before thanks to you Dan! I am currently Working in a 8 to 4 part time Job and I also go to College doing a B.A degree however I feel that i could do more and be more than what I do at the present time.
I am trying different things in life, doing experimentations and trying to invest myself by immersing in doing and learning different strategies, tactics and set of principles so I could have a better life for myself and my Family, I dream about being a Writer and hopefully someday I will my make way there and implementing a variety of skills, knowledge and wisodm, once again thank you so much for your Guidance and Wisodm! have a good one.

I love this! I agree! If someone doesn't have the right attitude, they are going to create problems. Making them jump through hoops first is smart- and again watch for attitude deficiencies. I have found through hiring failures that it is not all the nice things that a new employee said during the interview.. but the negative.. and the attitude. Absolutely true about hiring up - not down. My best hires have always been more skilled than myself.

I love the Russian doll rule. Plus, believe it or not as a Boy Scout leader we have a annual fundraiser with selling trails end popcorn every year. I as a leader teach the teenagers how to sell popcorn using your principles. Especially in up sales and how to treat people when you sell to them. And what is so funny is the very next year customers look for the same boys that sold to them the year before and they end up buying more than last year. I find it at win-win. Thank you Dan. One lesson you should take away from this and apply in your own life. Be aloof when you meet people. Remember what they said and see if they act on it. If they do... not sure what to believe. Never trust anyone except family. Be honest and tell people what you think. Stand by everything you say and share everything in your life except for family. Network and have fun talking to people. 99% of people aren't what you are looking for just keep grinding and in 10 years you will make it.

Hi Dan,
I love your advice and business acumen as you know from my previous posts. However this video kinda upset me because of my age, my race, experience and education . I am not retired yet, however by my age of 65 + people say I should be. I still have a lot to give and contribute. Many companies and CEO's have your mindset. I understand about millenials, but what about the baby boomers like myself. We suffer from age and race discrimination. I not using this as an excuse, just stating the facts. Sometimes you can get a great employee like myself that does not fit your criteria for being hired. You are doing what you claim other CEO's do but in reverse. Millenials are not the only ones that watch and support you. However I still love you and Jennie! You are great role models.
