Totally agree with every point. Raiders is THE definitive Indiana Jones movie, but Temple of Doom is such an amazing action adventure in its own right. I think in general people have forgotten that movies are supposed to be fun escapism, not something that needs to be picked apart and criticised. My rule is, if a movie is brilliantly entertaining, it's allowed to have a few unbelievable moments. Also Raiders of the Lost ark had ghosts and Last Crusade had a 1000 year old knight, so I find the "unrealistic" criticism of ToD a bit pointlessly unfair.
@@JsscRchlDrsy Both Raiders and Temple of Doom had supernatural elements. I understand they are both fantasy films but even in a fantasy film you have to keep to the laws of physics. Raiders does that but Temple of Doom is so ridiculous that I was rolling my eyes while watching it. They escape impossible situations that would have killed anyone else. This ruined the tension in Temple of Doom and made it embarrassing to watch at times.

They also have the actual truck that Indiana Jones got dragged behind in Raiders out in front of the California version of the ride.
It's funny, because Spielberg had other movies that pushed PG further before this. That messy headshot on the burning guy in Raiders would be an automatic R rating even today.
Temple of Doom is a "prequel" of Raiders. Mola Ram, the evil priest, it´s played by Amrish Puri, who was a well known indian actor who passed away in 2005. For me, the perfect description of this movie is... "Darth Indiana". A great original trilogy, being "The last crusade" my favourite. The OST, by John Williams of course, reminds me ALWAYS to Star Wars, specially themes like "battle of the heroes" or "duel of the fates", in the dreadful scenes.
AND... this is sort of (kinda) a sequel to Gunga Din from 1939! Captain Blumburtt talks of a Thuggee uprising years earlier. Gunga Din is technically THAT uprising. Stars Cary Grant. It has a bald Thuggee leader, elephants, a rope bridge... It's great!
15:15 the scene in the mine carts, where she punches one of the bad guys, they had to use the actress for the punch so they taught her to pull her punch so it looked real, only something went wrong and she hit him full force, breaking her hand, and the stunt man's jaw.
A Harrison Ford film i absolutely recommend is Witness. A mature thriller, come unrequited love story. Harrison earned his first and so far only best actor oscar nomination. It's a very different role fom Indy, but he, and the film are great.
Glad you were on the wavelength of this film. Some people really can't stand Willie but I think she's funny - she's supposed to be ridiculous (and the opposite of Marion) and a parody of the damsels from the serials this is inspired by. I don't think this is as good as Raiders, but it's a top-tier action film. The set pieces are fantastic, and John Williams's score is also A+. Also, as to why it was dark, both Spielberg and Lucas were in a pretty dark place at the time. Spielberg has since said "there was not one ounce of my personal feeling in Temple of Doom". He met his future wife on set though, so it wasn't all bad, and imo his mastery of craft was on full display.
Yeah it doesn't land for everyone but Willie was a little annoying and that was kind of the point. She was the sort of "everyman" character who would, naturally, be incredibly pissed off and freaked out to be thrust into the action of this movie. And she had a bit of an arc becoming more heroic and less vain, including by helping to free all the kids and punch out the guy on the minecart.
@@TheDemonicPenguin how right you are. I never had a problem with Willie. You can see Indy is just as annoyed as we are by his facial expressions through the film, and it’s hilarious.😂
1. Some folks don't care for this one very much, but I do. It's all kinds of fun. 2. Just a small suspension of belief regarding the lifeboat drop out of the plane, and the coal car landing perfectly on the tracks.🙄🙄 3. IRL Ford could fly that plane. 4. When I was in the US Navy I got to eat monkey (but not monkey brains) and tasted dog in the Philippines. 5 Shortround is "Billy Badass"🤬😎 6. Disneyland already has a "Raiders of the lost ark" so another one of the ride through the tunnel/mine would be cool too. Assuming you can afford it.😏 7. Kate Capshaw got the Willie gig because she was dating and later became Spielberg's wife. 8. Fun act: The guy that plays the guy getting crushed is the same actor that played the guy that goy hit with the propellor in "Raiders of the lost ark". 9. Coolest villain ever.👺 10. Recently one of his fedoras sold at auction for $600.000🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
The bats in the movie, are actually Flying foxes. Giant fruit bats. They are everywhere from Australia to India. The crocodiles in the movie, were actually Florida alligators, filmed in Florida at a gator farm. And yes, they are adorable. Alligators are the most intelligent of all the reptiles, and can be "trained" and habitualized almost as cuddly as dogs. I worked for a zoo for decades and the gators were my favorite. During a tornado (less than a quarter mile away) I had to jump into their pool, using them as floaties, since it was the lowest point on the property. We watched branches and debris fly overhead above the solarium we were huddle in. I also would let them patrol the zoo halls at night for security, including the hidden living area, inside a big closet. Catskill NY. This was my favorite of the first trilogy. Watch AMERICAN GRAFFITI for Harrison Ford's 1st movie role, with the likes of Richard Dreyfus and Ron Howard.
Fun fact: The blonde actress is Kate Capshaw, who married Spielberg in 1991, but prior he was married to another famous actress, Amy Irving for four yrs and when they got divorced in 89’, it cost him $100million, making it one of the most expensive divorces ever,at the time.😊
If u ask any kid of south asian descent, which Indiana Jones movie they watched the most growing up, it would probably be this one. Amrish Puri who played Mola Ram, was also a famous Bollywood villain in the 80s and 90s.
Great reaction ! Love how you guys just enjoyed the humor and outrageousness. This one is dark but it is fun ! I agree that Short Round is the cutest thing and Willie does grow on you
Chandra is so sweet. The crocodiles or alligators are doing the death roll, which they use as part of killing their prey. Fun reaction! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the awesome video. I loved this movie as a child and teen, still do, though as an adult I realize that Raiders was way better. There was just something about the sets, the very comic book like story that really captured me. I do still think this is the most visually striking of the 3 originals. The lighting in particular is soo good. It kind of reminds me of a more adult Rocketeer, which i reccomend if you havent seen it.
There's some really heartwarming clips of Ke Huy Quan and Harrison Ford reuniting at the Oscars last year. Harrison Ford was even able to award the cast for Best Movie for an on stage reunion.
Chandra: "Turn him into a pancake!" Chandra when it happens: * shocked Pikachu face * Also, outside of the Star Wars films, I think one of the most popular recommendations you're going to get is for The Fugitive, which is a great film. I know you've seen Blade Runner, but you should follow up with Blade Runner 2049- really good sequel.
The big thugee that fought Indy and got crushed in the rock crusher was Pat Roach that played the big Nazi thug during the airplane/airfield fight scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. If you can find it, Kate Capshaw was in a fun 1986 movie Spacecamp. I definitely recommend it.
Another great Kate Capshaw movie, that was the original Inception, is the 1984 Dreamscape with Dennis Quaid, Max von Sydow, and Christopher Plummer. Excellent dream sharing movie, but more sinister. One of my childhood favorites.
38:25 to 38:29 - Notice how Indy was doing pull-ups as he swung on that rope? First we saw him swinging with his arms straight up above his head. Then his elbows were tucked in by his sides. And then they were back up straight again! 😂
Heard he was going through a divorce I think during the making or screenwriting of it hence the darker atmosphere. Could be wrong but seems to fit, didn't he end up marrying Capshaw after this?
Fun fact, the village elder didn't know any English. He learned his lines phonetically. Some people judge these movies harshly, even when there were just 2 movies people tended to prefer 1 and 3. That being said, I think all Indiana Jones movies are great watches. They all balance campy, action, horror, and supernatural pretty well and also make pretty nice references to their pop culture of the era they're set in. Harrison Ford recommendations: The Fugitive, Blade Runner, and Air Force One.
When this movie came out, D&D was still exploding in popularity, and I had just discovered it as a nine-year old. Hidden temples with evil shaman cult leaders, magic stones, and minions with scimitars could have been pulled directly from one of the early adventure modules for the game! So I loved this movie, and we got it on VHS and I watched it over and over many times! I still think for pure roller-coaster action adventure, it's almost unmatchable, even if I'd put movies one and three above it.
I saw this in a movie theater when I was 12 years old. The theater I saw it at oversold the seats. People were ALLOWED to sit in the aisles/STAND at the back to watch this (fire code violation, anyone?)! Ill never forget the entire audience freaking out in every action set sequence, it was a riot and so much fun. No 'reserved' seating at that time it was first come first seat and we were lucky to get decent seats for it. Best movie experience I've ever had probably,... we weren't ready for the literal rollercoaster of a movie this gave us. I know it hasn't aged very well and is seen as the cheesiest one of them all but it was fun back in the day.
Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas had already planned the fast-paced inflatable boat scene and the famous rollercoaster ride in a lore in the first part, “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, but were unable to include them. Here they are absolute highlights. Spielberg won an Oscar for the effects, won Kate Capshaw's heart and married her in 1991. A magnificent movie with terrific effects.
THIS movie, "POLTERGEIST" and "GREMLINS" were the reason, the MPAA introduced a new rating (also suggested by Spielberg), the "PG-13" rating, because many people complained, that these movies were too brutal for a "PG"-rating. "SHORT ROUND"-actor Ke Huy Quan appeared one year later in "THE GOONIES" and than dissappeared (more or less) for many years. In 2022 he won an OSCAR as best supporting actor in "EVERYTHIN EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE"
So, in the scene where Indy cuts the ropes on the bridge. That was a real bridge. Stephen Spielberg is deathly afraid of heights, so he refused to get anywhere near actually being on the bridge, but Harrison just ran right out there and did his performance. Since Spielberg refused to get on or even near being on the bridge, when he needed to get shots from the opposite side, he said he would get in a production truck with a camera man or two, and drive all the way to the other side, and back again when he needed footage from the other side. Spielberg said it took a lot longer to shoot that scene than he would've like, but said he didn't care, as he wasn't getting anywhere near the bridge.
Harrison Ford plays the "bad guy" in American Graphite. He was working for George Lucas as a carpenter and so he asked Ford to fill in the small role. That role led into the larger role, playing a sort of space pirate in a B-grade Sci-Fi adventure film that most likely no one would ever see. A film called "Star Wars."
The producers scouted The Pink City of Jaipur, for a filming location. That fell through and they ended up building the whole palace, interior and exterior, in the studio at Elstree. A large village in the Hertsmere borough of Hertfordshire, England.
I read an article years ago that the actor who played Molaram didn't want his grandchildren to see the movie so they wouldn't be afraid of their grandfather.
Jordan's face during the snake surprise scene was hilarious. Where do you think Donkey Kong got its inspiration from, Chandra? lol 4:08 "I followed you on many adventures, but unto the great unknown mystery... I go first, Indy." That was great, even as a kid I loved that line.
There’s a fun fan theory that Indiana Jones is Han Solo’s fever dream when he was frozen in carbonite. If you pay close attention, there’s little visual and audio references to Star Wars scattered around the Indy films.
Obviously not a theory to take too seriously. It’s fun to look for all the Easter eggs in these movies. Plus, knowing the sort of character Han Solo is makes it amusing to imagine him imagining himself being an adventurous hero like Indiana Jones. I believe the theory originated concurrently on the “Star Wars Minute” and “Indiana Jones Minute” podcasts (both also very amusing).
"Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali... in Hell!" Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Ke Huy Quan. Entomology Fact: The insect on Willie's (Kate Capshaw) hand in the bug tunnel scene is a Spiny Leaf Insect (Extatosoma tiaratum). Gator's Cookbook Fact: You can make your very own "Chilled Monkey Brains" if you want. All you need is custard and raspberry sauce. Chill and serve. Location Location Fact: The rope bridge used during the final fight scene was actually suspended a couple of hundred feet across a gorge on location in Sri Lanka. Making Mola Ram Fact: Amrish Puri shaved his head for the role of Mola Ram. This created such an impression that he kept this look and became one of India's most popular film villains in his long career. Lost In Translation Fact: D.R. Nanayakkara, cast as the Indian village Shaman, did not speak a word of English. He delivered his lines phonetically by mimicking Steven Spielberg who was prompting him off-camera. The pauses in his dialogue were therefore not for dramatic effect, but rather waiting for his next line. Practical Jokers Fact: While filming the whipping scene, the crew played a practical joke on Harrison Ford. While he was chained to a large stone, Barbra Streisand appeared, dressed in a leather dominatrix outfit. While Streisand chided him for Hanover Street (1979) "the worst movie (she) ever saw" as she whipped him. She continued whipping him for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) and then Carrie Fisher then threw herself in front of Ford to protect him. This entire sequence was filmed.
Short Round is great in this and he's also great in the "Goonies" movie which was filmed right after Temple of Doom. The Original Star Wars movie came out in 1977 and Indiana Jones The Last Crusade came out in 1989 so Harrison Ford Stared in 6 major hit movies within a 12 year time span.
The set design for this movie is amazing, especially the place where they are doing the sacrifice ritual. It is very dark and terrified me as a kid but also it is very fascinating and exotic. thats the reason i like this one is my favourite of the original trilogy. John Williams score is, of course, magnificent as usual.
Harrison developed a serious back issue while doing this movie, and had to leave in the middle of production to get surgery and recover. In the meantime they shot all the shots without Harrison and used his stunt double way more than they were initially planning. Most of the action shots in the mine were of the stunt double.
There is no end to the shade Kate Capshaw catches over this role. Every day, there's someone who's seeing this film for the first time and learns to despise Willie Scott.
This one is my favorite Indiana Jones’s movie. Short Round is hilarious and Willy is also a hoot. I like both both those characters as Shorty is just amazing and Willy is so out of her element but survives and kicks butt while doing it. A lot of people hate on her but she acts like most people would if ever put in that situation. And she has some hysterical lines and moments. 😂
Great reactions to this 80s action/adventure flick you two...this is one of my favorite Indiana Jones films. Ke Huy Quan (Short Round) steals the show in my opinion....We would all see Ke again the following year (1985) in The Goonies (as Data), which was also produced by Steven Spielberg. ✌️
When Kathleen Kennedy’s name comes up in the credits, she’s one of the dancers in the middle of the screen in a blonde wig by her name. She’s also at the airport with Lucas and Spielberg (and Dan Aykroyd).

A still-beating heart ripped out of a chest and a Gremlin exploding in a microwave created a new rating.
And both had Spielberg involved, let alone it was him who suggested the PG-13 rating to the MPAA as well.
It's funny, because Spielberg had other movies that pushed PG further before this.
That messy headshot on the burning guy in Raiders would be an automatic R rating even today.
No it was just this movie
It's great!
Excellent breakdown. I love you guys!🤙🏾
15:15 the scene in the mine carts, where she punches one of the bad guys, they had to use the actress for the punch so they taught her to pull her punch so it looked real, only something went wrong and she hit him full force, breaking her hand, and the stunt man's jaw.
The Short Round actor is,of course, nowadays Oscar Winner 🎩
"That's so dark! Are they starting it like this?!" Hehe...just wait.
The evil priest was played by Bollywood actor Amrish Puri, my all time favorite villain.
The Fugitive (1993), staring Ford. 👍
Love WIllie. 'nuff said.
I can't fucking stand Willie. I wanted that elephant to drown her.
1. Some folks don't care for this one very much, but I do. It's all kinds of fun.
2. Just a small suspension of belief regarding the lifeboat drop out of the plane, and the coal car landing perfectly on the tracks.🙄🙄
3. IRL Ford could fly that plane.
4. When I was in the US Navy I got to eat monkey (but not monkey brains) and tasted dog in the Philippines.
5 Shortround is "Billy Badass"🤬😎
6. Disneyland already has a "Raiders of the lost ark" so another one of the ride through the tunnel/mine would be cool too. Assuming you can afford it.😏
7. Kate Capshaw got the Willie gig because she was dating and later became
Spielberg's wife.
8. Fun act: The guy that plays the guy getting crushed is the same actor that played the guy that goy hit with the propellor in "Raiders of the lost ark".
9. Coolest villain ever.👺
OMG did you work at the CATSKILL GAME FARM?!! So many New Yorkers, myself included, have incredible memories of that place.
Fun fact: The blonde actress is Kate Capshaw, who married Spielberg in 1991, but prior he was married to another famous actress, Amy Irving for four yrs and when they got divorced in 89’, it cost him $100million, making it one of the most expensive divorces ever,at the time.😊
Harrison Ford in "The Fugitive" (1993). Great movie.
"It'd be so awful to have someone you trust chain you up."
Actually, I only want someone I trust to chain me up!
Kali Ma!!!
If u ask any kid of south asian descent, which Indiana Jones movie they watched the most growing up, it would probably be this one. Amrish Puri who played Mola Ram, was also a famous Bollywood villain in the 80s and 90s.
38:30 Her: they should turn it into a ride.
Me: They did. It's been at Disneyland since at least 1995 afaik.
U will love the 3rd movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Many people think the 3rd one is their favorite
It's not as good as the first one but better than this one.
Hope you two are having an great and awesome day ❤
All three of the Indy movies are great, but my favorite has to be the Last Crusade. Have fun.
Chandra: "Turn him into a pancake!"
Chandra when it happens: * shocked Pikachu face *
Also, outside of the Star Wars films, I think one of the most popular recommendations you're going to get is for The Fugitive, which is a great film. I know you've seen Blade Runner, but you should follow up with Blade Runner 2049- really good sequel.
The original trilogy just keeps getting better and better with each movie!
The name of the club in the beginning is Obi Wan. 😂
Lucasfilm is always at its best!
I would love to find Spacecamp somewhere. I used to love that movie! So many people in it!
I saw a video where Quan is adult and meets Harrison now. That was an awesome moment when Ford recognizes him
The darkest and most controversial Indiana Jones movies ever made.
Heard he was going through a divorce I think during the making or screenwriting of it hence the darker atmosphere. Could be wrong but seems to fit, didn't he end up marrying Capshaw after this?
@@shainewhite2781 Yes he did. George Lucas was also going through a divorce, so the both of them were not in a good place.
I'm in my 50s have been watching (and still watch) the trilogy because it's so fun!
5:47 Everyone misses the name of the club
Not everyone, but a lot of people. It took me a few times to catch it.
I never miss.
Short Round was played by Ke Huy Quan who won the 2022 best supporting actor Oscar in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.
The 3rd one is definitely my favorite! Can’t wait for your reaction.
It's almost 2025 and this remains the greatest Indiana Jones movie of all time.
Where do you think Donkey Kong got its inspiration from, Chandra? lol
4:08 "I followed you on many adventures, but unto the great unknown mystery... I go first, Indy." That was great, even as a kid I loved that line.
The third one is the best well for me of course.
There’s a fun fan theory that Indiana Jones is Han Solo’s fever dream when he was frozen in carbonite. If you pay close attention, there’s little visual and audio references to Star Wars scattered around the Indy films.
terrible theory
Obviously not a theory to take too seriously. It’s fun to look for all the Easter eggs in these movies. Plus, knowing the sort of character Han Solo is makes it amusing to imagine him imagining himself being an adventurous hero like Indiana Jones.
I believe the theory originated concurrently on the “Star Wars Minute” and “Indiana Jones Minute” podcasts (both also very amusing).
The Mosquito Coast -- like nothing else Harrison Ford has ever done, by far.
The opening song is the key to the rest of the movie: Anything Goes.
38:31 They did turn the mine cart chase into a ride at Tokyo Disney Sea. Its lots of fun. That whole park is awesome. Japan is awesome.
Pure entertainment..and yes..the best, most iconic "Punching" sound ever.😅👍
Indy still tries to save the big thugee guard 😮
I saw that!
I have saw this movie in theater when was a little kid, with my father and my sister. Best day of my life.
"I'm going home to Missouri where they never feed you snakes before ripping your heart out, and lowering you into a hot pit!!!" Ah home, sweet home."😂
"Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali... in Hell!"
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Ke Huy Quan.
You‘re a hero man
JSTurbo1309 ...I'll take the compliment. 😁
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
Great Sequel,Nice Reactions Everyone 😊,See You Both at The Next One,Katy & Otis
The set design for this movie is amazing, especially the place where they are doing the sacrifice ritual. It is very dark and terrified me as a kid but also it is very fascinating and exotic. thats the reason i like this one is my favourite of the original trilogy. John Williams score is, of course, magnificent as usual.
DR JONES!!!!
Indy!
"You call him Dr. Jones doll"....
wake up now
I would love to see a re-release of this in theaters. Saw it with my older sister as a kid at the movies and it was amazing.
That actually was a ride once at Disney World Florida for a short while.
It's not an exact recreation of the scenes from this movie, but the Indy ride at Disneyland in California comes close enough for me ❤
Great films that Harrison Ford just happens to be in: Apocalypse Now (Redux version, preferred), American Graffiti, The Conversation (1974)
1:23 Jordan "noted!"
Saw this in the theater with my siblings. We probably spent a week playing "the floor is bugs" after.
47:00 When she hit that guy, she accidently hit him full force and broke his jaw, and her hand.
not everyone knows that this movie takes place before Raiders of the lost ark. glad you pointed that out. 😊
Actually, he is a pilot. Harrison Ford, not Indy.
When Kathleen Kennedy’s name comes up in the credits, she’s one of the dancers in the middle of the screen in a blonde wig by her name.
She’s also at the airport with Lucas and Spielberg (and Dan Aykroyd).
