  • Onomotion has come up with a scalable way to do micromobility powered urban logistics, cargo e-bikes with built in cover from the elements and attachable containers. Today, Onomotion has a couple hundred vehicles on the road in Germany with logistics partners like UPS, DPD and Hermes. Over the next few years, the company wants to expand to several thousands of vehicles across Europe and North America.

    Rather than simply increasing the battery size, they should just put a 25-mile range battery in each cargo pod. That way one pod is out for delivery while the other is being loaded with cargo and charged at home base... unlimited daily range.

    On one hand I’m a big fan of cargo bikes. On the other hand seeing how some of them become larger, heavier, more protected, and very expensive I wonder what’s the long term vision here. Are we going the direction to get cyclists off the bike lanes? They are already in danger from cars.. now imagine you have a thing that weights several 100s of kgs (with cargo) with kinetic energy of a small car moving against you, the driver doesn’t need any license (which might affect accountability), and since is in protected, enclosed cabin, has four wheels and is seemingly very stable I wouldn’t be surprised if folks driving it will be on their phones.
    That doesn’t feel like we are making the bike lanes safer for cyclists, is it?
    Perhaps the regulators need to catch up. But also the community needs a long term strategy and vision, with clearly outlined objectives. If the objective is to reduce the use of cars, then these heavy car-like delivery “pedelec” vans should move to car lanes. In bike lanes, in terms of safety, it doesn’t look like these say 300kg vans vs e.g. 10yo 30kg kid on a bike, have the same chance of not get severely injured in a collision.
    Why not giving those pedelec vans even more protection and let them share car lanes?
    It will slow down traffic but so what? Maybe we all can slow down. I can also imagine passenger version of these vans, and use them for children school drop offs.
    Point being is that if we have such objective, then it shouldn’t happen at the expense of cyclists safety, but at the comfort of car use, no?

    • @chonk0478
      @chonk0478 Год назад

      I think regulation and social expectations will adapt to these long before they saturate bike infrastructure - the protection is necessary to temper safety and comfort expectations people have because of cars, and it would likely fall away if cities switched their planning priorities to favor bikes over cars.

      Here in bicycle country of the Netherlands, there have already been bigger 350 kilogram vehicles with 160cc on the bike paths for quite a long time.
      Those usually aren't any problem, electric fatbikes however have become quite the scourge.

What kind of safety equipment does it have from a car truck motorcycle going 25 miles hr flying to you with no chance of stopping till it hits you ? Heavy traffic areas are fine but not where people are in a rush to get to ................. no where ?

    Well I guess we're going to need a delivery lane now as one of these will completely fill a bike lane causing all regular bike or ebike riders to have to pass them in the car lane. Or maybe ban cars altogether in the inner cities for this sort of vechicle. I also noticed in the video said vechicle stopped and unloading in the bike lane. Most bikes or ebikes travel around 15 to 20 miles per hour. this thing operates at seven miles an hour. A person walks at 5 mph. And then there's that big box truck the delivery thingee works out of. Suburbs fine, inner city no way.

    All auto manufacturers stopped selling compact trucks several years ago to focus on high dollar gas eaters. Now, instead of buying an inexpensive fuel efficient work truck with all the advantages of a gasoline vehicle, we are being forced into a $25,000 box on a bicycle that runs at 15 mph for 40 miles between charges.
