Mathilde is one that I obsessed over till I was able to buy a couple of cuttings. A few months later, I was at a local nursery, and they were selling a 6" pot with a ton of splash for $30. SOLD. A cautionary note for cat owners: those lighter-than-air vines can look like a good time to cats. I recently had two vines trimmed back by a feline friend. (Using the word "friend" loosely in this instance, obviously.)

Such an underrated hoya in my opinion. In a world of huge, veiny, silver, variegated, etc. leaves, regular Mathilde always stands out as an absolute, easy-going beauty. My mathilde demands nearly nothing of me and she gives so much. I bought mine for $10 at a plant fest last year in September. She has since tripled in size with minimal effort. What a gorgeous bloom!😍 I don’t chase blooms, but they are like a little cherry on top of all of the lovely foliage.😄 Truly a 12/10 plant. Thanks for the video!🙏🏽

I totally agree, the taco test is not a good idea - take it from a chronic under waterer & never feeder. Now that I am watering/feeding much quicker, but sometimes not quick enough for 'perfect' conditions, my plants have responded so beautifully! Plants that I thought were supposed to be a dusky green are now a deep rich green and vibrant. I have been truly amazed.

She's gorgeous! I love my Mathildes (regular and splash)! I have 3 Serpens and they love more humid conditions. I just killed my H. Serpens splash (or something) cutting. I didn't pay much for it, thankfully (under $10). There's a really great Hoya group I belong to, here in MN. So, I'm sure I can try again soon. Most of my Hoyas are from cuttings - I love watching them grow. New growth is my jam! Have you seen the H. Mathilde variegated? I can't wait till she's more affordable. One of our group members just sold 1-node cuttings for $100 a pop! That's too much of a gamble for me. I will wait. 😎
That's my jam, too! Also my jam: letting other people pay the big bucks for plants while I sit it out 🤣 I just picked up a 'Silver Dollar' that would have set me back a cool $600 not all that long ago .... I hope it was worth it to the people who ponied up that kind of scratch 🤔
Please don't get serious. You're fine just the way you are, Dave. LOL! I agree with your assessment of 'Mathilde'. Mine flowered within a year and grew exponentially when given the right conditions. I have propagated her several times and have made large planters just to see if I could. This Hoya is as perfect a plant as it could be, especially for beginner plant parents. Can't wait to see your next video to see how serious you can get. Bring it on!
Thank you for this engaging video on your Hoya Mathilde. She’s gorgeous and I am amazed at how much growth you got in a year. Great job! I just recently got the Mathilde and the Mathilde silver splash. They are small but oh so adorable! If I get a third of your plant’s growth out of my plants, I’ll be thrilled! So glad your experience with Mathilde has been great. Take care! 👌🪴🥰
Just love the Mathilde. I would love mine to look as full as yours. I have the splash, one in a mix of Leca and MAB Grow (AUS version of Pon) and one in an organic mix. I changed all of my indoor plants to semi hydro because of an out of control fungus gnat issue 🤦♀ I have tended not to feed Hoyas as much but after listening to you may feed more. You sold me on this Mathilde plant and I ordered a starter off Etsy. Looking forward to enjoying this small leaf beauty! You are such a good salesman that I also ordered the fertilizer that you recommended. Thanks for sharing your hobby.
Such a great plant. So great, that most people don't want it anymore and are out searching for a pure silver version. And that is called To each their own.... 😁
She is very pretty! I have one that is small, in a 4 inch pot that I got from Gabriella's Plants. She's doing great, so I think starting small is a good idea, and cheaper too. I think I paid 12 bucks for her and she came healthy and strong.
Thanks! I love Gabriella's !! They are definitely an A+ place to order from. Is it just me, or are the plants almost *always* a good bit larger than the pictures? Maybe I just order late in the year when plants have been growing like crazy 😁
I'm so excited to see you showcase this that I'm commenting before you're done! This is my first Hoya that has peduncles! 5 at last count. One getting ready to open! Mine is the splash. It's just a tiny lil plant that I've only owned for a year. Love her!
I just repotted a beautiful new to me Mathilde with 12 inch vines. You need two people to do this. Have one person raise the vines while the other person wraps the pot with paper bag torn into wide strips or in my case plastic wide enough to hold the vines. Then move it up from the pot to cover the plant. This holds the vines out of the way while you get to work on the roots and repot.
I have a serpens and it was slow to start putting out growth (likes a bit more water than most hoyas, kinda like a linearis) It's pretty easy going in my experience. Mathilde is super easygoing as well and can even withstand a little drought if you underwater.
I was gifted a mathilde starter plant 1 1/2 yrs ago and she’s only grown 5 more leaves in that entire time. I want to love her but I’m totally frustrated with her. So here I am watching video & reading comments trying to learn what I’m lacking for her growth. No knobby growth or signs of pests 😭🤷🏻♀️
When I have a stuck plant like this, I pull it out of the pot, inspect the roots, and freshen it up. Sometimes it needs a smaller pot, larger, or the same with a different (oftentimes looser) substrate. The other technique I use commonly is to simply snip a vine to activate the growth hormone. That's just me, but I've done it many, many times. Cheers to you in this new year!
@ Happy New Year to you! Thanks so much for being you & for the info. I will definitely try repotting etc. nothing better than getting my hands in dirt on the 1st day of the year!
I just got a Mathilde about a week ago and she’s so pretty :) I got a decent size basket-smaller than yours. I posted two long strands on FB for $10 -for both and crickets. I live in a small town so- perhaps if I shipped. Now I might just keep them and make another basket for a gift or trade 🎉 love your channel. Keep up the good work 🌻
Mathilde is very rewarding, not demanding, fast grower, what do you want more? You should try H. serpens, it’s so elegant and the flowers are light green and delicate! And it’s not so difficult I think! 😊
I have noticed that the US is charging much higher prices than Europe for Hoya and this is for common Hoya. Some areas are ridiculous in price which has hindered myself from being able to purchase Hoya unless I find them at big box stores

I love my Mathilde and it was growing beautifully for over a year and recently she started a big downfall. I took cuttings just in case and repotted the mother plant which is still not happy and the cuttings are doing ok but not as well as initially. Not sure what I am doing wrong 🙈🙈🙈
Good on you taking those cuttings. I'm assuming that the roots looked fine. Wish I had some sage advice for you. Hopefully she'll come back strong for you ☺

Do you have Hoya kalimantan (I think it's a callistophylla species) and if so, do you have any tips on it? I have a rooted cutting with two leaves (that I bought like that in September) and it's doing nothing. I bought others at the same time, repotted them all (out of sphagnum into a mix) and every other one is showing signs of growth. We're headed into short days and I don't have a tent or lights so I'm prepared to be patient over the winter but if I'm actually hurting it in some way, I could vary its conditions somewhat... or, I could put on my patient pants. Thanks for your advice on this and in general.
What a coincidence! You can see my prop at 12:48 in my newest video ruclips.net/video/DgSkJ900SZs/видео.htmlsi=crhcOmcTG17ZY5JN I had to start that plant over, and over, and over. I kept rotting the roots. And I wish I could tell you what I did differently, but it wasn't really anything. It has been slow, though, even after the recovery. If you can't see the roots, and it'd be easy to pop them out, I'd take a look just to be sure. If everything is good, I wouldn't worry about it until Spring. This wasn't a ton of help, but with this plant, it's the best I've got 😊
I feel The Urge to buy that plant. But i dont want to turn into a hoya head😅😅 Your plants are so beautiful. Some channels show clumpy rumpley warty plants and seem quite proud of them. Im gonna go see what the going rate is for the hoya you featured.
I let mine trail, as I'm not a huge fan of trellising this one. It doesn't get the small leaves you are experiences, however, so that might change my mind on the subject 😆
I have a hoya sunrise that is sun stressing and a hoya merrillii that is looking great, both of which you talked me into. I can't spell the plant you mentioned at the 8 minute mark, so i can't Google it, can you help me spell it?
I bought 10 hoya seeds. 1 sprouted and quickly withered and died the rest didn't even come up. I tried using a seed tray. Maybe too high of humidity? Not enough ventilation? I have 15 more to try. I'm a lil scared.
I do think restarting is the way I'd go ("think" ... I'm absolutely certain 🤣). Roots can rot so quickly under those circumstances. Best of luck. Gorgeous plant.
Serpens is a b*tch 😖 Extremely frustrating. But Mathilde is a dear and so is Carnosa :) My Mathilde is about to open her first 3 flower clusters any time now. I am sooo excited :) Edit: I sooo agree with you about stressing out plants. I don't do it, I don't like it. I'd much rather wait for happy blooms than instantly get stress blooms.
I have some cuttings of serpens rooting in the grow tent. Looking good, for now...! The scent on 'Mathilde' is so lovely. I hope that it gets stronger as she flowers more. Enjoy yours!
@@soberplantguy Thanks! I'm excited to see if you have anything for me. I need to get some lights before I can delve into the larger ones. I have a question. How do you get your trellises to stay cylindrical without bends and creases?
@@debh3404 When I unspool the roll of wire, I just gently roll the flat(ish) piece into a rough shape of a cylinder, and kind of work it from there, briefly. After it's secured I bend any wire that got misshapen. I don't labor over it, believe me 😂
@@soberplantguy I fight it like a WILDCAT! It often wins. JK I'll give it a try. I haven't used it yet. I wanted to ask you how you do it first. I've seen some others with some pretty bent up trellises and thought, wow, that stuff must be difficult to play with! Apparently, those hoya folks are just oafs and savages! lol
Whoever thinks that hoyas should be $5-$10 only when its well rooted and grown is insane or too cheap to buy it...just keep your money ...im a gardener and i know how much time, money, effort, water , light, fertilizer, and pest control or prevention we gardeners or plant ppl spend with our plants ... We also know the smaller the seedling, the less stable or rooted it is so its cheaper to buy it in that 2 inch size pot...of course the bigger and more established a plant is, the more it cost as its been a longer period its been grown or cared for ...time is money....some very cheap or frugal ppl should try to propagate and care for these plants from cuttings or seeds and see after 1 to 2 yrs growth if ever they are successful and get a healthy plant growing will they consider selling or parting from it for $5-10 😂😂😂 thats ridiculous!!!
I think the question was earnest. My guess is that *most* people don't know how much effort it takes to grow a lot of plants well. Expectations upon delivery are high (and I'm no different there). Cheers, fellow gardener
I follow a lot of US Hoya people here at RUclips and also have looked at a couple of websites (Etsy etc.) and I must say that I feel that many Hoyas is very expensive in US. I compare that with the situation here in Sweden. Maybe we don't value our precious Hoyas like you guys do 🤷♂️. What are your thoughts about that? You mentioned NGG in the video, and I am curious what the price of a wellrooted and established plant would be if you would sell it.
@@MichaelHaeffner Etsy takes 20% commission off the top, then there's 24% tax, and then there are the transactions fees. So, it's an expensive proposition to sell that way, and sellers have to price them high. I don't sell there for that very reason. I sold 4" very full pots, with multiple plants, of NGG all summer for $34-45.
I got a 4” pot of Mathilde earlier this year & she’s got multiple vines sticking out like an octopus!!!! She the only small leaf Hoya I have. Where do you sell your plants from?? Etsy, Palmstreet, or somewhere else?? Inquiring minds want to know!!! 😎😎😎😎🪴🪴🪴🪴

@@hnelson5609 Come, come over to the planty side.... LOL
@Kimbermoi I DID😮😮😮I ordered a plain Mathilde off etsy. It was so easy, they had all my info., I pushed the button. I have to say I'm excited.
Don’t you dare call her “plain” 🤣🤣🤣
@@soberplantguyIs green the correct term perchance? Or unverigated, regular? Idk. You are hilarious sir.
@@hnelson5609 I just call my unvariegated plants as the commoners 🤣 But "regular form" works, too, I suppose 😁
Thanks to a viewer for correcting me: Hoya 'Mathilde' is properly pronounced 'Matilda'
I'd also like to know where you sell your plants. 😊
Do you always grow your Mathilde trailing? Mine is trailing but it will put out the tiny baby leaves and they will not expand to full size.
I let mine trail, as I'm not a huge fan of trellising this one. It doesn't get the small leaves you are experiences, however, so that might change my mind on the subject 😆
I've actually been looking for Haiphong for a while due to the pink flowers, do you have an online shop?
I have a hoya sunrise that is sun stressing and a hoya merrillii that is looking great, both of which you talked me into. I can't spell the plant you mentioned at the 8 minute mark, so i can't Google it, can you help me spell it?
New Guinea Ghost?
No, the plant that he said one person had purchased, so he has to keep taking care of the others. Thanks for helping anyway!
I think it’s Hoya Hai Phong
@@krisfarnsworth620 That's it, thanks!
Hey, there. As someone mentioned, that was Hai Phong. Cheers 😁
Where do you post the Hoyas you have for sale?
People just reach out to me at soberplantguy@gmail.com. I really should have started a FB when I started this channel. I had no idea .... 😄
@@soberplantguy I will definitely be reaching out to you. I simply must have a Sober hoya in my collection 😁
@@ginat7012 I'm sober ... but I don't know what goes on with the plants once the grow lights click off 🤭
@@ginat7012Me too
I bought 10 hoya seeds. 1 sprouted and quickly withered and died the rest didn't even come up. I tried using a seed tray. Maybe too high of humidity? Not enough ventilation? I have 15 more to try. I'm a lil scared.
I’d like to know where I can buy Hoyas from you?
Where do you sell your plants or cuttings? I am just wondering.
People just email me at soberplantguy@gmail.com. Cheers from Iowa city.
I purchased a gorgeous enormous Wayetti in like 5 pounds of soaking wet peat, as a rescue. Trying to restart it , may watch it die instead
I am sooo excited :)
Edit: I sooo agree with you about stressing out plants.
I need one! How do I order from you?
Hey there. I don’t currently have any of her available. But any time you want to reach out, it’s soberplantguy@gmail.com. Cheers!
Apparently, those hoya folks are just oafs and savages! lol
@@debh3404 delicacy and refinements are my middle, and middle-middle names 🤣
Mines was a mealy bug condo 😒😂
*was* 🤣😂🤣
Haha i love this term!
You are correct that this Hoya is named after a little girl and her name is pronounced Matildeh (Matilda).
Thank you! I’ve never heard a consensus on it. 😊
Omg I wish you were my neighbor! Or husband lol. Love love your videos. Keep being you!
It would be nice to have another planty neighbor! I'm still kinda fond of my first wife though 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Haha I was disappointed because I thought you weren’t going to tell us the history 😂
I mean, it wasn't exactly riveting, but I always enjoy a good backstory ....
I buy unrooted cuttings for that price, if I'm lucky. Or patient
@@ilvrbts2339 Patience is really underrated these days 😁
