  • Is American history fact or fiction? Much of what we learn in school is wrong, because it is told from the white male perspective. Journalist Elaine Appleton Grant tells the story of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, and how learning about the conspiracy of silence around this tragedy transformed the most important relationship in her life -- and why exposing the untold stories about race in America has the power to heal our personal relationships, our communities and our divided nation.
    Elaine Appleton Grant is a lifelong journalist, editor and podcast producer. She spent many years as a reporter and producer at public radio stations and her work as appeared on NPR. She wrote a four-part series on the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 for the Wondery podcast American History Tellers. She is the co-founder of Podcast Allies, LLC, a podcast consulting and production company in the Denver metro area. Elaine Appleton Grant is a podcast producer, public radio broadcaster and magazine journalist. She’s worked at Boston’s WBUR, New Hampshire Public Radio and Colorado Public Radio, where she led the team producing Colorado Matters. Her work has appeared on NPR and in Inc., Fast Company and hundreds of other print and online publications. She produces Business Wars Daily, a Wondery podcast about corporate rivalries, and wrote about the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 for Wondery’s American History Tellers podcast. She is the cofounder of Podcast Allies, LLC, a podcast consulting and production company that helps organizations tell stories that matter. @Margaret Kpeh Do today's immigrants have the SAME RIGHTS as those "European settlers" who used superior weapons to decimate the Native Americans? What about the Sand Creek massacre? What about the Trail of Tears?
      You wrote, "The British and French Canadians gave weapons to the Indians to kill European settlers who defected from the monarchies of Europe." That is NOT how the land was taken from the First American People. This country was settled PRIMARILY by British settlers with GUNS. I think the purpose of this lady's lecture was to get people to look at TRUTH, and move in TRUTH. As long as we lie and try to rewrite history, there will be lack of progress in human relations.

    • @wordragon
      @wordragon 2 года назад

      Thanks for sharing your story.
      Something Elain is distorting is that US History lessons center around large change events. Lessons about race in these curriculums tend to revolve around two time periods: The Civil War era and the Civil Rights era. Both of these eras contain multiple atrocities and events that help people understand lessons to be learned from what was perpetrated by some in an inhumane culture. I noticed you omitted these events taught in every school. You learned about the Boston Tea Party as part of the bigger era of change, The American Revolutionary War, So, my point in saying this is that this strategy is used for all subjects found in US history and there are many important events that are not included because they did not happen in an era of change dominated by that subject. Both you and the speaker’s implication is that the education system doesn’t teach about racism because this specific event is not taught, but of course that is not true.
      It might be a fruitful exercise to imagine 244 years of historic events condensed into a 3-4 month class that meets for 3 hours each week. Obviously 244 years of nonstop US History doesn’t fit into that amount of time, so it is not a question of racism, coverup, or even lack of desire but strategy to pick eras with large groups of events that teach similar lessons.

Then the Scot's arrived in 1700's, they hated the English & hated Slavery. Neither are considered European. The Scot's beat the English during the Revolutionary War. But they kept coming back. They armed the Tecumseh Indians, to attack settlers up near the Great Lakes. Burned the White House, invaded Baltimore and invaded Louisiana. All within 3 years. 1812-1815. Racial discrimination however, attempts to reduce/dehumanize or invalidate someone based on something as inane as skin color. In your scenario, there is then no way a person can then "prove their worth" to the group/ society at large who thinks this way. Trying to understand another's perspective is vitally important in this climate but, we have to be careful not to engage is the oppression Olympics because it does negate or delegitimize someone else's experience. Jealousy mixed with racial resentment, to be more precise. Jealousy is a pretty common human emotion, but in normal circumstances it can be controlled. When you throw in a sense of racial entitlement or superiority, however, jealousy is allowed to rage unchecked as a way of "righting" the situation.

    • @Narrow-Pather
      @Narrow-Pather 3 года назад +1

      It's not jealousy, it's an ancient Biblical hate. One that GOD/YAH will deal with on the Day of the LORD. History is not the only lie or cover-up of truths, even the church won't tell the truth and they know it, they're hiding it. But, it's written in the Bible for all to read. Just like the Bible tells us that in the end, hidden truths will come out and knowledge will increase, it also tells us the punishment for those who did and hid their evils. You can find that in Joel Chapter 3. It's a short chapter and easy to understand.

    • @lvincent8843
      @lvincent8843 3 года назад +7

      It happened, but this story continues to be completely embellished. B Wall Street was a functioning neighborhood with hard-working people but most of the people were by no means affluent. The 19 year old accused of attempted assault never claimed to trip and fall in the elevator. He attacked the 17 year old girl after the elevator doors were closed and she screamed and opened the door with scratches on her face and hands. He ran away. The store keeper did not automatically call the cops and make a false accusation. Shopkeepers heard the girl scream and came to see if she needed help. The police were called after she told them what happened to her. The riot started with armed Bs killing around 10 Ws. The majority of the city was W and in response about 30 Bs were killed. The claim that at least 300 Bs were killed is completely made up, there is no evidence for it and these r@ce grifters are out there excavating Tulsa right now hoping to find b0dies to inflate the numbers. All in the service of inflating grievances. This all started with a B 19 year old assaulting a W 17 year old and then armed Bs killed about 10 Ws. This was insane and the response was obviously insane as well, but the condescending false narratives that treat a functioning B district as if it was the source of envy and jealousy reveals the big0try of low expectations and the desire to inflate the number of b0dies shows the perverse incentive of people who benefit from creating divisions in society by inflaming tensions with this obviously false narrative that W people are all bad and B people are all good. The truth is always much more nuanced and in the case of Tulsa it’s not just more nuanced, it’s completely different than this revisionist propaganda. I’m curious to hear if Candace will or has ever commented on this cuz it would be a prime example of the type of lies and false narratives used to perpetuate a victim-complex in her community that she often speaks against.

    It had nothing to do with race, that is the cover story. Its about what it has always been: jealousy, envy, pride, HATE!

    German here: I can only say that remembering and facing your past is painful - and healing.
    Let historians do their work and teach what they have found out.
    By doing so you can at least have a clear picture of what happened.
    Do not gloss over things or avoid uncomfortable truths. It will not hurt you, it will only hurt your feelings. And whoever did horriible things 100 years ago is mostly dead now. So, putting these to trial is not possible anymore.
    What happened in Germany between 1933 - 1945 is by no way comparable to the Tulsa Massacre or any other event in US history.
    The only comparable thing perhaps is, that the generation who was responsible back then tried to forget everything and wanted "to get over it".
    You can have a better understanding of what you are today if you remember.
    Because what we are today is because of what our ancestors did in the past. Simple as that.
    But be aware: there are lots of people who do not want to remember. They either do not want to be exposed or want their peace of mind to be disturbed. Those will find any reason not to support remembering and facing the past.
    Every victim has the right to be remembered.
    Every deed has to be remembered and we all have to face what the past was.
    Simple as that.
    Another lesson to me is also important:
    What is broken can be repaired. You cannot make things undone. But you can repair a society to a certain extent.
    By remembering you realize what was wrong in the past and what needs to be adressed today.
    Can we "learn" from the past? To a certain extent - yes.
    But this is an ongoing task.

    One would have to truly see another before being moved to have eyes of compassion. If an individual is choosing to not understand the multiple atrocities that took place that affected African Americans were crippled financially, red lined disenfranchised in regards to housing and economical opportunities. We pay reparations to everyone even countries that we have bombed to help them rebuild but it is only when it comes to African descendants that we question where is the money coming from and who is going to pay it when the majority are the only ones to have benefited from the destruction of others. Native American, Asians who helped to build the railroads along with poor with the indigenous of all cultures. It’s much more difficult to pull yourself up by the boot straps when the boots (assets) have been utterly annihilated. Sending my love and peace and for every seed sown we all shall reap even if no is around to witness. Thank you for sharing as many others seek to reveal the facts and not just what makes us feel comfortable because the shaping of America is one founded on blood and greed no matter the cost.
