    Arsenic in the chicken feed 🤯 all the more reason to buy organic fed chickens! I’m using Bruce’s trellis system on my pergola for my tomatoes, I was looking at the yellow on my leaves this morning thinking maybe it was iron deficiency but now I’m thinking I might need the shade cloth, it’s not bad and my beefsteaks are looking good, and I have to water with our county water as well, ugh, it’s a bit discouraging. I know our water is super chlorinated because I can smell it, I leave water in jugs and let that dissipate before I water, usually 24 hours. I love your high tunnel, I remember when you first got it and posted about it and look how little your grand baby was in the back of the gator!!

      I know Michelle I can’t believe Skybear is 8 now. She can’t come this year because they are moving back to Texas. It’s the army. I was sad over that. The leaves are tuning yellow probably due to all this rain we had last week. It might have depleted a lot of the nitrogen. If you can get some liquid fertilizer that would help just follow the instructions on the bottle. I know we always used the county water before and never an issue. Then we realized once we were growing in the high tunnel how unhealthy it was that’s why we bought the Berkey Water filters. Then it doesn’t remove salt. It’s a cycle. You are doing good letting that chlorine evaporate. Maybe you could use a tarp and a bucket catch some rain water. Yeah we had this guy want to give us commercial chicken poo well we took it and that was a mistake. Live and learn. We found all that out in the reports for he soil analysis and the water reports. After last years huge success in the buckets we may never change a thing. 😊 Thank you always for your support. It really encourages me. 🥕🌱🥬🍓

      Well we had that issue too here in Michigan they are extremely invasive. My husband says you will have to use your boom boom stick. You can also smoke them out of their dens. We have had skunk issues and ground hog issues and of course deer too. My husband says protect your food!!!! These critters can outsmart us too lol. Thanks for asking.

    Maybe growing hemp in the soil would help pull the salt out of the soil. I’ve heard it works. Look it up.

    • @dawngallop
      @dawngallop  7 месяцев назад

      That is a possibility but honestly once you grow it never stops growing. Even in winter I will have hemp plants growing everywhere. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Curious, couldn't you rig up some dip irrigation from rain barrels (that you treat) on the up-hill side (or intermittently for different areas) to use gravity to water? Instead of individually watering. I know it would be quite the contraption & take a lot of thought to structure for high wind etc. but sure could save you time in the long run😅

    • @dawngallop
      @dawngallop  11 месяцев назад +1

      This is so true. We have in the past had drip irrigations and used well water we pumped up to the high tunnel the well was over a 100 years old dried up quickly and all my plants turned yellow from the excessive algae. As some old timer told me to just drop battery acid in the well water to change the ph. I do think your idea is definitely worth trying and very helpful. I can see it now. Thanks for the advice. Happy growing 🥦🌻🌱

      @@dawngallop That's an old well! ...another thought but still a temporary fix, my sister does similar individual watering, down in Florida with some plants far from her house, trying to re-establish some native plants in an area that non-natives had taken over that they removed. For her birthday us siblings got her a drill pump, hose and a cart to put four to six 5 gal. buckets in (easier than carrying 2 buckets and a cup). Step one, put buckets in cart, attach the hose to the drill pump, pump from her rain barrels into the 5 gal. buckets, then pull the cart, water and pump down to the plants and then step two, pump from the buckets to the plants. It's still very involved but is better on her back... 😅

    I’m debating between 6 mil plastic and 11 mil woven fabric for covering. Any thoughts? The plastic is 92% light penetration and the fabric is 87% light penetration. I’m also wondering what type of shade cloth to use in the summer. We’re in zone 8 and get brutal summer sun (lettuce and peas cannot survive full sun). We have high wind, too, and I’ve had the same concern as you about the cover being lifted off if the sides are open, but with the sides closed it’s going to get really hot in there in the summer - any thoughts on keeping heat down while protecting the structure from wind?

    • @dawngallop
      @dawngallop  Год назад

      The 11 mil is what I had on the side curtains. It is very durable and heavy but will last a long time. Get the shade cloth with the grommet’s. You can tie it to your side curtains. When we have to roll the sides up for hurricanes we would run fans however when the winds were blowing that hard it wasn’t sunny. Our poles are five feet in the ground. Each one hand driven. I thought we were gonna get a divorce over driving the poles in the ground. I have a 70 %shade cloth in zone 7b. That works perfectly. Peas won’t survive past May here it just gets to hot in general. I hope I answered everything. If not just send me another message. Thanks for asking.

    I dont understand the concept. So you built a high tunnel then shade the plants from the heat? While I'll clearly don't know your situation it seems there is a tremendous amount of improvement to be made.

    • @dawngallop
      @dawngallop  4 месяца назад +1

      You know nothing about a high tunnel if you don’t know why I have a shade cloth. You have to protect the plants from the extreme or it will burn them up. That’s why I had plants in my high tunnel in temps excessive of 100 degrees Fahrenheit and I have had greenhouses since 1997 and full production.

  • @berrymanmontgomery7875

    I don't know if you are trying to make money from your tunnels but running fans and buying bags and maybe potting soil has really increased you cost. If it is just for you, no problem.

    • @dawngallop
      @dawngallop  7 месяцев назад +2

      Hello I have been growing since the late 80s and I was just sharing what I have learned so someone else doesn’t make the same mistakes. Running the fans helps move stagnant air around plants and can help with pollinating as well. I had to switch to bags after the salt build up which I couldn’t afford to remove the plastic to allow for the rain to wash away build up. I have been selling at farmers markets for over 10 years now and you do have to spend money to make money. A lot of times you will spend a lot more than expected for sure. Basically I never gave up I continued to see what would work and share what did.

      I have 18 inches of top soil in my tunnel, it came from my creek bottom. So I grow directly in the ground and add a little compost each year, works great.@@heatherward553

      I agree. This setup makes zero sense. The only reason it possibly could is if the government financed the whole thing( which is likely). And even then it's a head scratcher.

      @paulnovak833 absolutely not!!!!! I paid for it all. You are welcome to do your high tunnel as you please. The government paid for nothing!!!
