- Revolver's "No Distortion" series invites heavy music artists to ditch their amps, pare down their songs, and showcase their intimate side. In this episode, Mike Scheidt, singer, guitarist and principal songwriter for sludge-doom act YOB, welcomes us onto his father's tree farm just outside of Eugene, Oregon, where he delivers a stripped-down, transcendent reinterpretation of their epic song "Marrow," from 2014's album 'Clearing the Path to Ascend.'
I've known this guy for about 20 years and he has been nothing but chill, supportive, inspiring and kind in the metal/punk scene. He had some health problems knock him down, then rose like a fucking phoenix. Never stop, Mike.
Skol! You don’t know how many times I’ve been grateful he made it through. These songs have been dear friends in some dark times.
Their collection helped me when I was getting clean. Forever indebted to their round about support. Much much love.
He rose from the ashes and wrote one of their best collections of music yet. I am patiently anticipating what new music they release to the Universe.
He's a savage
Great to hear. 🙏
We need a Yob acoustic album.
He does have an acoustic solo album. It's pretty good, you should check it out if your unfamilar.

This is not true, each bite from the demonic sandwich sends you to an evil dimension which does not cease until the entire sandwich is consumed. At which point the victim is trapped forever. Last time, the victim was only saved because he removed the tomatoes before eating the rest, causing him to be inadvertently spared from certain doom!
Mike Scheidt has an excellent acoustic album. You probably know already because its been a year...
If you watch close enough you can see his soul pour out into the earth and resonate with all living beings throughout the universe.
the internet is so full of shit, reading a beautiful comment like your makes me want to kiss the whole universe. so true. thank you brother.
Like a musical spirit bomb?
Desertfest Antwerp 2018 !
is it a white aura by any chance
Feel mine.
It's so good this man is alive.
It is.
thanks for this comment
Epic as fuck!
One of the best bands I've ever seen live amazing man, keep on keeping on
Fuck you aren't lying.
YOB sounds like a deluge of joy finally breaking through after years of wading through grief.
Hope.
Yes, this is it.
All great metal bands hide important moral lessons and wisdom behind the intense screaming and instrumentals. Yob is one of the best examples of this.
Brings mic out into nature, plugs into a tree. Love this
What I love about this guy is that he can simultaneously look as a bog monster emerging from the depths, and also as this chill scientist who studies it
"Restless souls
Flickering light
Painted in gold
Tearing at the seams
Needing to feel
One true moment
Needing to feel
Something true"
After hearing this I finally cried. It have been months and something was bottling up inside of me. Then it just burst out in form of tears. It felt like I've been sick this entire time and this song, this moment in particular, took it out of my chest.
I thought the second part of your comment, as in the part that's not lyrics to the song...were lyrics to the song. Sweet, I've always loved that long YOB song but what are the words to it anyways? Would be nice not to mumble, hum or make em up as I always have, & how convenient here they are written before me, didn't even have to google it - I could have just as easily not given a second look and from then on always sing along to it with your comment hahaha.
The first time I heard this song, I was working out in a lawn, during a clear blue sky summer day. It was gorgeous outside, and that part just hit me so hard in the feels that I stopped my machine and openly wept. Honestly couldn't explain why, but I did, and it was amazing to experience that
🙏🏻🕉
I'm glad you shared your feelings.🤘
I think that's the most widely experience of Yob's music : it heals.
It makes you cry over what is important to you, and it heals deep inside.
Thank you Mike.. Yob saved my life ,, I was in a dark place till I was introduced to this man's writing
Now I'm full of love .
Same here, YOB was a one of main reasons I was able to cope with reality and still is. Mike's writing is out of this world, truly an experience. Everyone should stop and have a listen to this album, it may change you. One love
:)
Respect. ..Mike brings me back to the 1970's and our dreams of peace.
I feel the exact same way.
Seriously one of the best acoustic guitar performances out there. No gimmicks. All heart and skill. Love it
Some where in this video there is a samsquinch crying softly.
Rob Sorgdrager Sam Losco?
I hate those fucking bastards
Decent!
lost it
OP is a blessed
Mike if you read this...I love this song so much. You take the genre you are "known for" or probably more accurately put into, to a new level. You NEVER abandon "The Song" for The Tone" but instead wrest "The Tone" to serve your vision. And true vision you have. You honor your era, and music as awhole, with your contributions, and I am grateful to the universe for you still being with us after your health trials.
You practicing your art makes lives better.
This would make a good heavy doom song.
Just checking you do know this is their acoustic take on the heavy doom version right?
done already dude, before they had this acoustic version.
Um, I think he was kidding
Sarcasm people!
Damn, imagine if this had bass and drums...
When I die. this is the song.
I have a playlist called “play this on loop in my coffin when i die, forever” and this is the first song
This version breaks my heart and fills it up again.
same here dude, first part tears me apart, second part stitches everything back together
tal cual
Absolutely beautiful. This song translates amazingly well to acoustic. It would be incredible to see the whole band perform this acoustically
The solo. Man just with nature in the background must've been incredible.
It's impossible to not love this man. It almost brings tears to my eyes hearing thie song.
It feels like he is out of this world in that moment, making music straight from his core, connecting with everything.
Plus, he reminds me of someone I really like.
Yob is love
if one day i can cover this song i'll die in peace.
Thanks Mike for this masterpiece 5 years that this song is taking me away from every negative stuff.
i spend hours watching you play trying to replicate this song , Yob Rules !

I can hear a dnd player crying softly in the distance
(it was me)
I reborn everytimes I listen this masterpiece. Thanks Mike, I hope you live another 60 years on this earth!
Things might happen in our lives, but listening to this song - even if for a moment - makes my body and soul peaceful. Which, believe it or not, is very rare...
Thank you, Mike
My favorite thing about Mike Scheidt is that he looks like an 18th century inventor.
I think he's looking a lot like John Lennon, with the long hair and the glasses...
Will never get enough of this.
So beautiful! 💖💖💖💖💖
I remember the best Valentines Day I ever had was being able to go to a YOB concert on that day. I went by myself. It was magical and filled that day full of so much love.
Love YOB so much!
Thank you for your music and big heart!
This song translates very well into an acoustic version. Still like it heavy but this certainly works.
Nathan Lemmon that's because it was written on an acoustic when Yob was on a break and Mike was doing solo stuff
it kinda makes me enjoy the studio version of it more....the contrast between these two...love them both
Absolutely beautiful. One of very few songs that brings tears to my eyes
Despondent Insurgent dude, same. This song brought me to my knees a month or so ago and made me purge a year and a half worth of tears, pain, guilt and shame I've held onto from a relapse and the damage done. It made me clear my path to ascend, literally.
This version is amazing. The original is amazing. Just amazing in general.
The 6 people who disliked this have absolutely no soul or marrow in their bones...
Dallas R. Melo it's not "in their blood"
Or they didn't like it, that's also a possibility.
If you don't like YOB what's the point in watching in order to dislike
dingeskerz incorrect
@@dustinanderson2738 hey, look at it this way...36 ppl tried but didn't like it. at least they took some time and listened.
Wow this is beautiful. Yob has really gotten me through a lot, I didn’t think I could be moved by them anymore but here I am. Please release an acoustic album of your favorite songs
Yo, what's up with your pfp?
My dude’s just living his best life
Loving that right hand technique.
🖕
MisterGrooves was thinking the same! It's like a flatpick/claw technique
Is it a normal pick between thumb and index + middle finger picking?
so does your wife
@@leonardermel yup it is some sort of hybrid picking. Takes some time to get used to, but it sure is worth the practice as it opens up many different Options.
Absolutely brilliant! I’ve watched this video so many times and every time it makes me feel something different. Mike Scheidt is a national treasure
I listen to this song at least three times a day.
I'm going through a tough breakup and this song feels like medicine
I start to ponder why there aren't vastly more of these "no distortion" episodes, however that begs the question "is this the pinnacle of such things?" Yes. Yes, it is. This may be the pinnacle of ALL things.
That was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I don't think words could ever hope to do it justice.
Love this. I listen to this and cry like a b. Dont care, stirs my soul. P.s. My Bassett digs you to mike.
Grandiose. I f***ing love his voice. It's so profound and multi-layered, and... wise, just unbelievable. A rare thing.
As the song ended, I just started applauding.
Same here!
me too :) spontaneously, without anyone arround me :)

Happy to be born, raised, and living in a state with some awesome local bands such as YOB! 🤘
I don't know how many times I watched this video. I will keep coming back.
I clicked like before it even started....beautiful song.....they should do a remake sometime with an acoustic intro like this...and then just slam in with the drums and electric....that would be powerful
not that this isn't powerful....
their new album is incredible....might have out done "clearing"...If that's possible...Mike is in the zone right now...
If you downvote this incredible video, please have your head examined. Yob is love.
Victor Dominguez haha. Well, I thought with respect to the quality of the music, I wouldn't suggest anything quite that drastic
I vote for an all acoustic YOB or Mike Scheidt album... maybe even a Mike Scheidt country or blues album.
Luemm3l He’s got one, it’s called “Stay Awake”
:40 ...in surfing, there is a term when you could see the sun through the other side of the barrel, called "eye of the beholder". At :40 , you see the sun through his elbow and guitar. A phrase should be coined whenever that happens. Maybe "eye of the soul" when a meaningful tune is being played and the sun happens to shine between your instrument and your body
I wish I would have never had to leave Oregon.
Man, this song is unreal...
This is beautiful. What’s more wondrous is that somehow I found this just at the right time in my life.....
Thank you sir
I am amazed that the recording is so clean and clear. Such a great performance and song.
Beautiful song, beautiful soul.
Sometimes the song means more than the lyrics. I have no idea what he’s talking about and it doesn’t matter. This song captures my grief.
The difference between a 'music fan' and a real music lover; one who can pay attention to everything happened and every detail, not just focus on the vocal melodies
starting around 9:19ish....it's just brilliant...sorry for the people without the musical attention span to make it to the end....that's the best part, y'all ....as far as I'm concerned....!!!
Goosebumps
This song... one of the deepest emotion I had in my life... YOB IS LOVE
This is so fucking good. Mike's voice and nature go together hand in hand.
I LOVE the original, and this is extraordinary! Thank you Revolver!
6 minutes until finish of this wonderful song is still the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my life. Music is the greatest pleasure of life.
This man pours in all of his soul every time he plays
Mike is the man. Seeing them live a few years ago changed my life. See you all in Philly April 5th
Always brings tears to my eyes, not many can do this but mike really let's it out on the outside looking in ❤
Beautiful version of this amazing song by an amazing artist of an Amazing band.
no wind, this is beautiful
Just shared this on my facebook for about the 3rd time with my personal review:
"Just want to share this acoustic masterpiece one more time... Worth the listen if you haven't already. It is my humble opinion that the band YOB has all the necessary ingredients it takes to be an instant favorite and classic for all time: Sincerity, Wisdom, Heaviness, as well as a sound and concept that confidently travels to the tops of the mountainous peaks of light and love, and fearlessly plummets through the bottomless caverns of darkness and despair. Embracing all aspects of the human condition, YOB is a band we can all listen to and appreciate for their truly masterful sonic artistry. The original heavy version of this song instantly became one of my all-time favorites and this acoustic version performed solely by its creator Mike Scheidt really travels deeply into the beautiful layers of emotion and experience he so expertly conveys through this piece. Please enjoy.
He has a great tone to his voice
I don't even know how many times I've watched this video.
West Coast vibes that connect us all and resonate our clarity in these times
This version should be in an album or single, its just perfect!
Jeebus,,, I felt like I was literally sitting there in the bush watching this man play a song for me. Very nicely done!
This is just really good and beautiful, I’m really glad I stumbled upon this song
Chayse Cutarm check out the album clearing the path to ascend by yob hear the original. YOBISLOVE
That solo at the 7:50 mark tho 🔥
really excellent guitar work...unorthodox and perfect...just a really well crafted and heartfelt song....Mike is one of the most fearless and talented and soulful musicians I have ever known...so stoked he is killin it...and isn't dead....
Thank you Revolver for this piece of art!
Mike's song is heard by Indigenous peoples of Here & Europe! ..Amazing emotional release!
Wow just amazing! The filming, the woodland in the background.. and the song of course. His voice is very grungy in this one.
What a beautiful human.
I've just herd this 6hours ago and I have been playing on and off and finding new meaning each time super power full lyrics and sound absolutely mesmerized by it's rythem 👏👏👏👏
I’d love to see him and Jerry Cantrell write one song together! I think it would be epic whether a sludgy slogger or something acoustic
Upload this in some streaming platform 💚🔥… what a performance!!!
I'd love a studio version of this where the chord progression was played in the back while he solos, and maybe a couple harmonic hums throughout. It's such a beautiful song.
Love this acoustic version of a well crafted song!
Even after 5 years .. still love it!
This man’s music is so beautiful!
He’s radiant!
YOB 🖤
YOB will always be love.
This is probably one of my all time favorite songs, Acoustic or not. This is art.
This is so entirely pure. Thanks for this gem!
So glad I've found Yob's music! Incredible stuff!
Song of the decade according to the Obelisk! Could probably not agree more!
I would literally donate my own blood to have this version on vinyl, I don't want to pay money alone for it, I want to donate a part of me to it, it means that much to me
Beauty at its finest. Such an intimate performance, great job Mike!!!
So fucking amazing. Best show I’ve ever been to was seeing YOB, standing 5’ from Mike who was tearing it up.
Lights my soul afire everytime I hear this
Tears. So raw and beautiful.
One mic, in the woods. Wow
Dude seriously, how did they get it to sound THAT good!? To the Engineer(s) responsible for this recording, please speak up.
@@dangiampietro6606 because it isn't a live recording, if you go to 6:44 you will hear some strumming he actually isn't doing.
@@placeholder6517 I watched it a few times, and it seems like it all matches up. It's a bit choppy, but it does not sound like it's wrong or overdubbed or what have you.

@@floOoOoOoOoOoOoOo yeah he's totally strumming and not picking an arpeggio with his middle finger you're absolutely righ- no wait that's exactly what he's doing
Nice to see such heart put into words and melody. From a pretty heavy band too. I think this is pretty cool
Way to go Michael.... Makes me happy to hear you.

It'd be great to hear some acoustic Enslaved... there's a clip of Grutle and Ivar doing 'Return to Yggdrasill' acoustic and it's beautiful
one of the best things about living in Eugene, thanks, Mike!!
I keep coming back to this beautiful rendition. I haven't been able to decipher the last two lines of the song (english is not my first language) but I can tell that he first sings "Life within..." any ideas on the second line? :)
Of our truth, of life within, the stars.
This is my first time hearing this man or his work, I've never listened to YOB. This is quite beautiful and I notice he also has a very interesting picking style
