I am a hard core shingler. I have tried the raking method and the first time I tried it, it lasted a day. This year I tried it again and it worked out but you get close to perfection with the shingling. I never took 4 hrs, even the first time I did it but it did take me 2 hrs. Now I’m down to an hr. And it does last the whole week.
Nowadays I’ve got no time for 1 hour wash and gos so cut them down to 20 mins. Praying hands and raking is a time saver
I have the time, but just don't want to take that much time. Raking all the way, LoL.💜

I have fallen in love with shingling but it's so time consuming. The longevity and the ultra definition is what makes it so appealing. I'll do the raking/smoothing method when I know I'm about to put braids in or some other type of protective style bc I know I won't need my w&g to last long.
The shingled side truly has less frizz and is more defined, but it looks to me like they are both equally voluminous.

Your hair looks beautiful either way.💜 It sounds like it just boils down to how often you want to do your hair and/or how long you want the set to last. If your scalp feels fine and you don't experience more tangling when you wash by going longer then taking the extra time to shingle may not be a bad thing.
Personally, I redo my WnG every 5days just because my scalp tends to be oily and starts to itch if I go longer. Also for me, I don't want to take two hours to shingle and I'm not sure I could even get it done in two hours because of the length of my hair. I do WnG styling because it is easy and quicker than braid-outs or twist-outs. I simply don't want to be in my hair for hours on the days I wash it. It also looks like my coils naturally separate a little more than yours so luck helped me out.
They both look gr8. Shingling part has more shape to it. Like a heart shape n look as if u had it profesionaly done. Raking has more hang to it n give a "i woke up like this" vibe. I would use raking 4 my every day look n shingling for special occasion

Look! Your hair is just plain gorgeous! I love both sides! It just comes down to how frequently you want to reset your hair because the shingling method creates longer lasting wash and gos.

Have you ever tried topping your gel with a mousse? For me, I found mousse pretty much "shingles" the curls for you. Of course not as perfect as if you manually shingles your hair yourself. But, pretty close in my books (since I'm lazy 😅).
My go to method is a leave in and just a mousse. I do the raking method. The bad thing is I have to re-do it every 3 days or put it in a puff. Haven't found a gel that doesn't dry the hell out of my hair. I keep forgetting about curlsmith!!!!!!

Love your hair either way. I do the shingling method but I run my hair between each of my fingers at one time. Like I don't do individual curls at a time. That saves me some time. I used to use my detangling brush but I don't think I like clumped curls for myself as much as I thought because the frizz does come faster. I think it's the gel I was using also.

I used to shingle until I found your videos and raking and smoothing is now my go to the time is cut in half my volume comes sooner and they last longer I also have medium to thin density that might make a difference

Go to is definitely shingling. I feel like it is also easier to wash as well.
When you do your wash & go, is your hair soaking wet, or just a little wet?…bc we have the same EXACT hair [ density & all ], & my wash & go doesn’t do right on soaking wet hair…I wanted to know your method

Honestly both are bomb....I prefer your raking method more cause its faster and your results look more effortless. But the shingling is bomb too dont get me wrong. They're both a vibe and they don't look drastically different neither so that means your raking method is too legit 🤌🏽🤌🏽😍😍
