- On December 21st, 1988, ground control would lose contact with Pan Am Flight 103: a 747 named Clipper Maid of the Seas. Quickly it was realized she had broken up over the Scottish town of Lockerbie. As the authorities investigated, they discovered this had been no accident. Flight 103 had been intentionally destroyed by a bomb in a terrorist attack, killing 270 people.

Wasn't expecting the Lockerbie bombing to show up here
I actually like the idea of you making multiple videos each covering different issues of Pan Am before you touch on the entire corporation itself. Can’t wait to see whichever issue of Pan Am’s you talk about next.
Beautifully worded! I remember this tragic event very well (I'm that old!) We can only hope that this will be concluded soon. So the next-of-kin can finally move on with their lives.
Ugh... this incident was the tipping point that led to the downward spiral of a great airline, and the guy who ordered the bombing was only taken out - more than 30 years later, by his own people. Little consolation for the families of the victims, IMO.
Wow. Such a typical airline shame. I didn't hear these details. Airline gets warning. Uses warning to justify surcharge or rate hike but does nothing with money or to address warning. Wtaf.
Also never knew the laundry and free canteens. Thanks to the locals for this. They didn't have to but they did
With Pan Am being the focal point, I imagine the Tenerife disaster will be discussed soon
KLM was directly responsible for that one.
@alexhajnal107 I never said Pan Am was responsible. They were still involved, though.
I knew about Lockerbie before hand, but remember learning about this disaster during training to be a flight attendant/cabin crew in 2011, and the implications and security regulations etcetera out in place afterward but I never knew about those who passed away after impact
Happy 4th of July!
I live near Detroit, and where one of my family is buried, is a memorial to the crash
I was in West Germany (in the USAF, Rhein Main AB) when this happened. I actually knew somebody that was supposed to be on Flight 103 but missed his flight as he didn't get to the airport on time.
Great video Darkness, RIP to all the souls lost in this tragedy.
Another commercial airline to focus on would be TWA.
Is this prior to 9/11?
Yeah, it was 1988
9/11 was 2001
WTF?! That's so tragic!^Thx. for sharing all facts you could gather. Bloody terrorists!
I had to pause the video when it mentioned the Syracuse University students since a relative of mine was originally scheduled to be on that flight.
The decision to spend a couple more days in London saved their life.
Well, this is a can of worms, because the cloud of "evidence" points so many ways. However, I admire you for tackling this, and may all analysis contribute to the future knowledge of this terrorist act.
Not to mention another Pam am flight air Indiana was blown up back in 1985.
Happy Fourth 🎆🎆🎆
If anyone is In/visiting London (England) the imperial war museum has the dock/stand from the original trial on display
A close relative of mine flew that flight just a couple of weeks prior so this event is a bit personal. What a pointless act. I remember hearing an interview with someone who had been on the connecting flight out of Germany. She described one gleeful young girl who was near her on the flight and who brought joy to her fellow passengers. The girl was on the onward flight to New York. As the woman put it, "You didn't deserve this."
There is a grim post-script to this; fourteen year old Steven Flannigan of Sherwood Crescent had gone over to a neighbour's house to set up a new bicycle that was a Christmas present for his younger sister. While gone, a large part of the aircraft fell on his home, killing his sister and both his parents.
His older brother, who'd been living in England at the time, died in 1993, possibly a consequence of drug use as he struggled to cope with the loss of his parents and sister. Steven tried very hard to make a go of life but in 2000, in a suspected suicide, was struck and killed by a train.
One wonders how things would have changed if the US had stood up to Khaddafi when he first came to power in 1969. Especially if the US had retained Wheelus AFB ln Libya.
Absolutely love the video but I pinky promise Heathrow Airport is not pronounced that way.
Well at least Gaddafi gots what coming to him.
So much darkness. Anyone else have a large portion of video black ?
Never mind. It's just really dark at night animations. Really liked like black screen
The thing is, I didn’t even know about this until it was actually mentioned by Sex Pistols legend, Johnny rotten as he was actually booked to be on this flight and the only reason he missed it was because someone forgot the pack of suitcase or something like that.
Heth-row?
Any chance we can get an American Freedom Train video for 4th of July 2025 or 2026 for Americas 250th birthday
If they do a 2026 edition of the train one hopes there'll be less racism and revisionist history. Depends who wins the White House I guess.
Happy forth of July story eh! 😂
Free Palistine!
United, we stand with Israel
Honestly, neither of the combatants are the good guys. The civilians are the victims (as always).
Heavily agreed, @@alexhajnal107. This is a war where there is no clear "good guy." Its moreso anti-terrorist vs terrorist, which is the reason im pro-isreal, but i am 100% for a palestine free of hamas.
Isreal has done some fricked up stuff, though.
@@realcanadian96 Terrorism vs. Genocide and Ecocide. I won't posit which is worse but none are good. As for the future I think an inclusive and strictly secular combined state is the only sustainable route. Might I suggest The Southwest Levant (Levant for short) as a neutral name for the new country?
@@alexhajnal107 my personal opinion is that ontop of a neutral Jerusalem. Operates like vatican city, with equal parts of the city dedicated to 1 religion. It would be a place to observe religious artifacts and to preserve culture. Sorta act like an international zone.
