@@mcnielentertainment Generally speaking steam locos at that scale are capable of putting down more tractive effort than a similar sized diesel. The diesel has the steam trains on basically everything else. But it's still awesome watching a big old train just SHOVE a revenue train while on it's way to it's next tour stop.
I certainly don't think #4014 (or any of the other Big Boys) are overrated. I had the opportunity to see that magnificent engine (along with UP #844) in Utah about five years ago, and it was indeed an experience that couldn't be replicated with watching videos. I've also seen #4012 on display at Steamtown, though it's been a while since I last was there.
@jesseusgrantcanales To be precise, that's actually not right either. The last run revenue run by a Union Pacific steam locomotive was made on, you are correct, July 21st 1959, but was made by 4015. The 4000's were placed in dead storage in various places and by 1961 were being donated or scrapped. 4005 actually sat in storage in the Green River roundhouse until 1967 before being donated.

I think what one of the coolest things about them bringing the 4014 to the steam shop was the two engines they had in front and behind. The one in front was the current 4014 and behind it was 4884 which is the wheel arrangement.
4014s assistance with the freight train just shows that our locomotives are REALLY good at strength rather than speed like in the UK, and 4014 is a MAJOR example of that
Great video but there is one thing I missed…the SOUND of the Big Boy’s whistle. It’s an unmistakable baritone that sounds like nothing else. It reminds me of a ghost moving through the hills. Also, the Big Boy doing that little push of the freight train a few years back probably counts as its first revenue work since the 1950s. I've had the honor of seeing the 4014 on display in Pomona and on multiple occasions during its excursion career. No video or photograph can truly convey its size and power. The engineering genius that led to its creation is simply incredible
The Wheel slip was caused by the tracks being slightly bowed down. So it was not the weight of the train. It was the condition of the track. And I love that video. I would have loved to have been in the cab, that day :)
Loved the ending with the "Dragula" cover. I do hope at some point you get a chance to talk about the Norfolk & Western Class A 2-6-6-4 articulated locomotives. Nearly as powerful as the Big Boy's, and capable of top speeds of over 70 mph. They were designed and built in-house by N&W's steam shops in Roanoke, VA. for heavy passenger and fast freight work through the Blue Ridge mountains. In service from 1937-60, there were 45 built, and the sole survivor of the class, Number 1218 ran excursions in the late 1980's and early 90's before being put on static display and the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
Wouldn't it be something to see The 4014, 3985 , 5511 and 844 4 different classes of UP engines together ,all under running condition ... That would be AWESOME

Although it pisses me off that I had to miss out on that I will say this though. Now THAT is how you cap a video off, badass choice in music my dude
*looks around* Huh, no one flipping out about the Big Boys being referred to by the feminine pronouns. Nice change. So fun fact, Ed Dickens said in one of his talks that 4014 was his second choice. He originally wanted 4023, but he was told he couldn't have her, because it would be too difficult to get her down from her display site. He then settled on 4014, because he'd already earmarked her a few years before as a good restoration candidate. He also said that the story of UP looking at all the Big Boys was false. He knew what he wanted, and they didn't look at the others.
Most machines are referred to as she. The Big Boy is a unique example where both are acceptable it seams. Not gonna lie it feels weird to refer to it as a male. What does disney do with the Roger Brogie and Ernest S marsh? Id like to see their take. Probably still she.
@@JonsGarage89 Oh yes, I know. I do the same, but I've seen far, FAR too many comments on here about people getting huffy about it. "It's a big BOY, not a big GIRL." Completely ignoring that Ed Dickens has referred to 4014 as "she" and "her" a few times. I've read posts and comments on various places from the engine crews, and they all use the feminine pronouns, even if the engine has a male name. So the Ernest S Marsh, and the Ward Kimball, and all the others are still ladies.

The 4014's oil conversion was at least thankfully successful. Which gives more justification to Durango & Silverton converting their coal powered designs.
You should do a video about UP 4014's smaller cousin, UP 3985, as she also has a very fascinating story behind her. There are also numerous other steam locomotives that I have been waiting to see you do a video on, including the following: Canadian Pacific 1293 & 6060 Northern Pacific 328 & 1070 Norfolk and Western 1218 & 2156 C.P. Huntington No. 17 York DM&IR 225, 227, & 229 Southern Pacific 4294 & 4274 New York Central 6721 That's all I can think of for now. Let me know of any of you want to see HITD do videos about any of these locomotives.
Write off steam at your peril! In the UK there is a project to convert an otherwise generally useless British Rail Class 60 to steam using Hydrogen or a compound thereof, e.g. ammonia, as fuel for the boiler - i.e. to operate as a turbo electric, retaining the original traction motors etc. In due course, to be carbon neutral, the 4014 may itself require conversion to burn hydrogen rather than oil.
Maybe that's the reason why 844 isn't running right now - they probably are in the process of installing PTC and probably looking at this tour of 4014 to see if it works.
I wish UP and CSX could get an agreement so 4014 could come to Florida. I can't get the time to travel to the west to see her. Kinda unfair for us gulf and east coasters... BTW the song should have been MASTER OF PUPPETS!!!

Until 611 had a short stint with it in the latter half of the 2010's decade.
I watched the Big Boy, 4014. Leave Cheyenne Wyoming, on June 30th, heading west. And it did not have a Diesel Engine . I just finished watching a video of the 4014, taken on July 11th, in the Feather River Canyon with bridges. And Low and Behold the Diesel Engine was back. Which means that said Diesel is either needed for Braking, or perhaps even giving the 4014 a Push. I watched the 4014 and 844, deadheading west to Utah, for the 150 Anniversary of the finishing of the Trans Con Railroad back in 2019. It is the first video on my channel. And even though there where two big steam engines, it still needed a Diesel, for what ever reason. Frankly I wondered if that would happen. Yes, from Utah to Cheyenne, over the Wahsache mountains, and Sherman hill. The highest point on the UP line. And that was all.
My Empress will always be my No1 but Big Boy is just crazy. It is an American icon. UP deserves credit for choosing to resurrect one of the largest steam locomotives, not just any one they could find in decent condition. It just screams "America! F*ck yeah!"

19:25 I don’t know the song someone tell me
Dragula by The Jump Off
yes thank you 💚
I'm not even American but 4014 pushing that freight train made me want to start chanting U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
16:08 That is my favorite part of 4014's 2023 excursion! Pushing a stalled freight train, reminds me of Edward push trains over Gordon's hill. In fact I portrayed 4014 as Edward the blue engine just four years before this occurred, though I portrayed Daylight 4449 as Gordon.
The boy is *BIG*
He’s the *BIG BOY* 😂
Seriously though… this locomotive is *MASSIVE* and *MAJESTIC*
And as someone who loves trains, I am all here for it!
People who call 4014 overrated dont actually understand WHY Big Boy is so famous
@@therailfanman2078 I know why it has theme songs and everything so that means it’s getting more famous and more famous because it runs through Las Vegas too and it’s getting more famous because it runs by itself
Gotta hand it to ya Darkness that music montage was 🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌 muah on point!!!!
5:35 that is the steam engine I used to play on as a kid
10grand to ride in the cab of 4014??? that's cheap at twice the price!! What a ride...
yes thank you 💚
Good to see old steel fired up again.
When the diesels can't pull the weight, Call in the BIG BOY problem solved.
The time 4014 helped a diesel sounded straight put of a Thomas episode
Henry actually did something like that in the original book series. The story is called "Super Rescue" from the book "Enterprising Engines"
I work for UP as an Engineer in Southern California and the cities name is Pomona ( PO Moan ah )…I’ve got pictures of her in the yard at West Colton, CA. Were it sat for about a month..
I got a model of Big Boy!!!! He runs great!!!!!
I love them ... Im more of a Dreyfus Hudson man but I saw it when it was in Louisiana and it's a beautiful piece of American locomotive history
I got to see her 2 days ago in Greeley, thing is my great grand father was the engineer for this one! I am going to Cheyenne to clime all over it!
I would love to see them rebuild another big boy and keep her on coal. Oil is a whole lot easier, but coal is just cooler.
Well done. Thanks for sharing.
You need HER HELP! Crazy that it pushed a modern length train on top of its own load. Great Video
Former SoCal resident here.
Puh - moan- uh. (Pomona)
Other than that, great video. I used to be able to play on 4014 when I was a kid, when my dad would take us down there for the off road expo at the fairplex.
9:24 there used to be door behind that white sign that says danger
Actually, fun fact, UP 4018 was considered to be restored to star in a movie that was essentially Old 587 Great Train Robbery, but with a Big Boy
But the question is.. Will they do it?
@@Merica_official50 No, at the time they ran out of funding after they painted up the engine
@@joeythecat7482 darn
I got to see it today. It shook the sidewalk I was standing on.
My favorite Union Pacific locomotive! Maybe my favorite locomotive ever! Saw her in 2019 and 2021 and can’t wait to see her again this year!
Now if CSX can bring one of the preserved Kanawahs up to steam, despite Dark's inability to pronounce the class name correctly.
Darkness, Another great video. For another video idea, what about a history about the old kid's show, Shining Time Station?
Ive always perfered the Challengers, they look more balanced while running. I knew the 4000's were popular but Ill admit I thought they were over rated. But after seeing the Old Man running through Utah, Nevada and California. The Hype is real lol.
I had the chance to see 4014 when she was in my state (Louisiana) back in august 2021, but by the time I'd found out I'd already evacuated & came back because hurricane Ida was close to making landfall at the time as it was already in the gulf. Although it pisses me off that I had to miss out on that I will say this though. Now THAT is how you cap a video off, badass choice in music my dude
Darkness loving Big Chungus with Unspeakable Power. I also like the music to the last bit of the video. What's the name of the singer and song please.
Dragula, by The Jump Off. Very nice cover, if I must say, and oddly fitting for 4014.
@@shimesu443 Well theres our answer. People get huffy about the dumbest things nowadays. Oh well.
Yeah well, I still prefer calling Big Boy a he since I'm with the majority on that anyways.
It is right in the name after all: Big BOY
@@JonsGarage89 Yup, saw that one coming.
Roll on big boy 4014!
yes thank you 💚
I've got one of the 140 seats on the 4014 excursion Sunday from Roseville to Sparks. $$, but one item I can check off my bucket list. I am so looking forward to hearing and feeling that beast climb the Sierras!
Preservation railways: we dont have that much cash for these trains
UP: FUCK IT WE BALL
Lobe the Big Boys! Just got a Broadway Limited version fir my model railway in Australia. Can I ask what the song was at the end of the video? It's very cool!
The 4014's oil conversion was at least thankfully successful. Which gives more justification to Durango & Silverton converting their coal powered designs.
What if when 3985 restoration/ overhaul is done, that 844 , 3985 and 4014 do a triple Header and a side by side photoshoot
OH YEAH!
You should do a video about UP 4014's smaller cousin, UP 3985, as she also has a very fascinating story behind her. There are also numerous other steam locomotives that I have been waiting to see you do a video on, including the following:
Canadian Pacific 1293 & 6060
Northern Pacific 328 & 1070
Norfolk and Western 1218 & 2156
C.P. Huntington
No. 17 York
DM&IR 225, 227, & 229
Southern Pacific 4294 & 4274
New York Central 6721
That's all I can think of for now. Let me know of any of you want to see HITD do videos about any of these locomotives.
You had me at Big Boy!
I was at the Strasburg Railroad while they had the driving wheels of 4014
What song did you use at the end?
Dragula fits this locomotive perfectly!
Just something to think about, imagine seeing a big boy running at 80+miles per hour!😂🚀
When are they gonna run 844 again they should put a PTC system in 844
Maybe that's the reason why 844 isn't running right now - they probably are in the process of installing PTC and probably looking at this tour of 4014 to see if it works.
I wish UP and CSX could get an agreement so 4014 could come to Florida. I can't get the time to travel to the west to see her. Kinda unfair for us gulf and east coasters... BTW the song should have been MASTER OF PUPPETS!!!
Awesome video….As usual.
Steam Excursion stars: (Taunting 4014 while she is sadly on display in Pomona) The Engineer and crew will NEVER choose you again, they want lighter but far more impressive engines like US!
Ed Dickens and the UP steam crew: (came to Railgiants museum to buy the Big Boy, and noticed 4014) Why are you sad, 4014? Would you like to go out? We need your help to celebrate 150th year of the first transcontinental railroad!
Big Boy 4014: (happy) OH YES, PLEASE?
2023:
Diesels: Hey! I got stuck on this hill
Rail Director: Say, we got this giant steam engine right here
4014: Put me in coach
@@seanwhitman8353
Diesels: No use at all! A Steam engine!? She will never get us over the hill!
4014: Just wait and see!
I saw the stalled Train!!!
Maybe one day 4014 might doublehead with 3985 once it has been restored back by RRHMA but so far there is no such intention but it be nice
just never forget the previous most powerful operating excursion steam locomotive, N&W 1218 from 1987 to 1991. 3985 was the most powerful operating excursion steam locomotive before the 1218 from 1981 to 1986 but after the 1218's excursion retirement the 3985 took it back in 1992 :D
Hmm does that also include the 844 as the world's most powerful operating excursion steam locomotive before 3985 and after 3985? Until 611 had a short stint with it in the latter half of the 2010's decade.
BIG BOY MENTIONED RAHHHHHHHHH🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

🎶Well he's a big big boy the biggest boy, he's a big big boy the biggest boy, he's a big big boy the biggest boy, he's a big big boy the biggest boy!🎶
To everyone going to Roseville Saturday, I'll be in a fallout NCR shirt and feel free to say hi! Going to be amazing and hope to meet ya'll there!
I will be seeing her at Ogden union station next Saturday.
My Empress will always be my No1 but Big Boy is just crazy. It is an American icon. UP deserves credit for choosing to resurrect one of the largest steam locomotives, not just any one they could find in decent condition. It just screams "America! F*ck yeah!"
we need a video on 844 now
