Bono writes his own lyrics and he knows what he sings about and he means it. That's what makes him such an emotional singer. He's the best singer out there, in my humble opinion.
The greatness of U2 has always been about the sum of its parts.
Amen to this. Very Led Zeppelin like ironically enough.
I’d love to see your thoughts and opinions on u2 every breaking wave live from the EMA’s in 2014. It is up there with Bonos greatest ever vocal performance. The passion and raw emotion that comes out in the performance is something only Bono is capable of doing . A remarkable performance , gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. Definitely worth a watch and I’d love to see a reaction of it 👍
I would second this! It displays an aspect of singing that I think Bono excels at, communication of emotion.
U2 were great up to and including Achtung Baby. It's been middle aged crap since 2000. I say this from the perspective of someone who discovered U2 when Unforgettable Fire came out. That was my favourite ever album...
I was there that night and it was phenomenal, I was only there to see U2, spent a fortune on tickets but my god it was so worth it.
Yes! That was incredible
Great song with a wonderful enduring message. And enjoyed your comments as well. Thanks Beth!
Nothing to add! Just making that heartshaped symbol across the chest for this band, this song, this channel, this world and for myself!! We can use it for sure!!

He's singing this quite differently in this performance. I've seen them 6-7 times live, and his voice is almost always in great nick (he takes care of it and trains for tours - you rarely hear a bad live performance from him). But this is much softer and "sweeter" than I've often heard him sing this song - he often puts more grit and distortion into it, especially in the chorus
Beth I love your channel and your positive energy is so nice!
As a vocalist and someone who’s recording my first album right now , I feel I owe so much to Bono for being the main inspiration to get me to sing and find my own voice. He’s truly one of the best singers out there !
Great video. This is a more understated version than other U2 live performances of the song but beautifully done.
I would really lika to see you react to Bono in "All I Want Is You/Where The Streets Have Name" Live from Slane Castle. It is a truly amazing performance, I think, but would love to get your take on it.
And/Or Miss Sarajevo from Milan.
@@shawnguillory267 YES!! This would be amazing
Great reaction and commentary on the technicalities of a great singer! Was sad when the video launched into the reaction without the traditional Beth Roars "roar" at the beginning...but then I got it at the end and all was right with the world again. 🤣
Great reaction and analysis, as always. I really related to what you said about songwriting. As I mentioned on Twitter the other day, I'm currently writing an album. I just finished a song today that took about a week, as did the one before it, whereas the two before them took a couple of days each. And it's always the lyrics that take up most of the time. I can put the chords and melody together in about 10-15 minutes, but despite decades of writing poetry, writing the lyrics always feels like pulling teeth. Maybe I'm just more particular about them than I am the music.
I love this song. It's one of my favorite U2 songs. However, you should listen to the studio version because I think you can hear more of what he's doing with his voice and the band and especially the ending of the song which is one of my favorite parts. The yearning vocalizations at the end are much different in the studio version than this live version. This live version is fine and great but I think you should listen to the studio version for comparison for sure.
One ZooTV Live in Sydney is good too. One in this gig is meh imo
The live Modena version of One is brilliant
The ending with him and Dave singing and then Dave stops but they don’t lose eye contact seems to be saying something, but I’m such a new fan, I’m not catching on.
Brilliant insight. One of my favourite bono vocals is the rattle and hum live version of with or without you.
This is a beautiful song is my favourite of U2 thanks for the reaction, I loved it
Wow, he seriously has a beautiful voice.
"I hope you're dancing with me." Every single video of yours!
It's a shame you didn't choose the performance from the Zoo TV Tour as it was much closer to the time 'One' was released and Bono was still in his vocal prime during that period (1987-1993).
I disagree. He's much more melodic now. I don't think that he would have been able to sing Every Breaking Wave or Miss Sarajevo all the way through back then
Always appreciate your research. I live in Chicago a short walk to where this was filmed but did not attend. My loss.
Hello Beth good video of this song, amazing!!!! Congratulations!!! Good job!!!!
One of my favorite u2 performance
Awesome reaction & review, my friend. 🙂
Now that brings back memories ! I've been lucky enough to get tickets for the vertigo tour, in Paris Stade de France.
i love what you're doing regardless
Beautiful song.
The Bono vocal perfromance in my opinion is Stay (Faraway So Close).
you have the cutest expressions!!
Bono is one of those singers who is currently unfashionable but who will probably achieve legendary status when he passes on.
He gave the lu-UHhve because he's North Dublin, north Dubs go deep into their vowels. WUN LUV. etc Very similar to Liverpool.
Unfashionable??? The man is one of the coolest people on the planet. Love U2
@@theguardian308 and by concert sales, the biggest band on the planet
Currently fashinable since the 80s
There's hate on U2 because of them not paying taxes, and some hate for him because of his activism that isn't perceived as authentic, but I don't think anyone doubts his singing.
I love your videos cause they’ve made me think about signing in such a different way. I came hear to say you should do one on Morgan Wallen. I’d love to hear you break down the way he sings
this song is perfection. that is all.
2nd September, 1997. U2 live at Murrayfield. It was a few days after Princess Diana died. When they played this song with a single spotlight shining in to the night sky - not a dry eye in the house.
Beth, the hair on my arms and neck ALWAYS dance to Bono.😎🌄🎸
The wall of sound that 'Heroes' has, is replicated here with The Edge's guitar.
Thank you
The song started as a part of the song Mysterious Ways. Rumours tell Producer Daniel Lanois created the intro on guitar, so the next morning the edge played the intro by his own in his way and to have done it by his own. The version on Achtung Baby is the best ever, even if this live version is great.
I can't dance. But I AM grooving along with You. LoL
It is a minefield understanding and using English in England, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Austrailia, New Zealand and so many US places.
Hi Beth, I have watched a lot of your videos and I love your take on music because not only do you know what you are talking about but you are so sweet. I would love to see you watch home again by Michael kiwinaka.
His and Delores voices are amazing
Forever bono!!!!!!!!!
i would love to hear your reaction to penumbras by sandro. another reaction i would like is to tango singers , i suggest edmundo rivero, carlos gardel ( one of the composers of "por una cabeza" the tango that pacino dance in scent of a woman )
Two groups came outta Ireland Celtic women franchise andU2 best music ever
Hola!!!! Podrías reaccionar a Diana Navarro y su canción "Adiós".Desde España saludos
👌👌👌👌👌👌
Reacciona a (hello seahorse frontera en vivo ) 😃😃🙂
Please, PLEASE, PLEASE, as a vocal coach, explain to me how a young 18(?) year old Bono says “he can’t sing and then discovers that he CAN” AND then listen to Pride or Bad at Live Aid or a “Hope” tour for “Bad” or “Pride” now sing with such a POWERFUL, UNIQUE and OUTSTANDING vocal??????
I know nothing about singing but I cannot even begin to reconcile those two extremes. What? Did Bono never try to sing anything out loud until he did? Then he’s just lucky enough to have such a powerful voice. WHY is this driving me crazy? Can you help with your expertise? I’m 63 and a new U2 fan.
One of my favorite songs EVER.
Hi Beth. Love ya. Have a look at Clannad feat. Bono "In a lifetime". I think this is his best ever Vocal performance x
Check out Warren Haynes version at lollapalooza!
Any version by Warren should do, he captures the essenz of the song in a really impressive way. And when he is accompanying himself with electric guitar (playing like half the notes Edge does) he makes U2 sound terribly thin. But then, if you would listen to Warren, why listen to One, if you could have Soulshine?
Hi pls react to Sanama by Homayoun shajarian
Love your videos, love u2 even more. Would be awesome if at some point you could do a reaction to their 2014 MTV performance of Every Breaking Wave. Beautiful song, powerful performance, at some point it looks like his vocal cords are going to burst out (he is not a youngster anymore…). All the best to your channel!
Hi Beth! Are you Irish yourself? You have a nice accent :)
😘😘😘😘😘😘
The context of the song I knew of, not the way why and how they composed it. I'm amazed they were close to breaking up.
I'm not naturally an artist-sy/crafty kind of person but I can say inspiration is really hard to come by. Sometimes it comes but sometimes often it does not come.
Great video and gotta love all of it, primarily your reactions and your explanations and experiences that at some point I was actually thinking and saying just the same as you. Thank you so much.
Ahhh yes, the song that saved the band!!
Love the story about the writing of the song.
You are cool
Would love your opinion on Maneskin's cover fo Elvis's song 'If I Can Dream' for the Elvis Film
please PLEASE BETH REACT to the portuguese singer "MARO- Ó RAMA QUE LINDA RAMA" . YOU WILL LOVE... KISSES
great reaction, More U2 please
Second best voice in my opinion to The King.👏🇦🇺
You should react to Marvin Gaye trouble man
homayoun shajarian - sanama
Please, react to The National - This is the last time
Ditto
Bei all den reaction videos fragt man sich wo waren die, was haben die wirklich bisher gehört, haben die in einer Blase gelebt !!!
lol yes irish :)
Beautiful song.
We are one.
But not the same.
We get to carry each other.
One.
Love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holdin' on to what you got
When all you got is hurt.
Did I ask too much? More than alot
You gave me nothing now it's all I've got
Beautifully bitter.
A very beautiful, but a very sad song about breaking up.
🇺🇸🇺🇦🇬🇧🇷🇺🇨🇦🇳🇿🇦🇺 etc...
❤️
The Vertigo Boston version of One, good choice, how to dismantle an atomic bomb era was missunderstood, u2 wanted to go somewhere else, the piano, the base the guitar, its not War, Joshua Tree or ZooTV ts another bright space.
Have you heard the version with this music but, the lyrics to ONE by METALLICA and performed by CHRIS CORNELL on acoustic guitar? It's surprisingly good. 🤔😊
Sometimes it sounds like Bono is singing a bit lazily on the more popular songs. If you ever actually go to a U2 concert you can't really hear him sing sometimes as the crowd are belting it out so loud it drowns him out. It must be tough to concentrate on your singing when 80,000 people are shouting it in your ears.
Bono's voice was never a favorite of mine, but I really love the honest way you express your thoughts and emotions on every artist you react to ❤️
Beth listen to the version with Mary j blige it's beautiful ❤️
I agree. I'm not much of a U2 fan (all to do with Bono, I'm afraid) but Mary's cover is simply epic. U2 is figuring as a backup band for her. She enters the arena: veni, vidi, vici!
@@slowbluesmaster sorry, but Mary ruined this song.
Edge is a hero on that guitar. u2 is t just Bono
Love the U2 reactions but please react to him during the Zoo TV tour. Bonos voice was at its peak.
Been a big fan of U2 for ages. Bono's voice is a lot better now but he actually injured his vocal chords in the early 2000's due to smoking (he went from cigars to cigarettes). Thankfully his voice recovered and he now actually sings in a higher register.
Quit cigs it be even better
@@bartschwartz9233 He's quit quite a few times but inevitably starts up again. I think it's more socially these days. I was a professional singer and smoked for 28 years. Only gave it up 3 years ago.
Beth check out Mary j blige doing this song, it's amazing & would love to see your reaction
I appreciate your videos. I've been following you through a few videos and would love to hear your take on U2's Where the streets have no name: ruclips.net/video/F3e2f4bzumY/видео.html
Yes! Please!
You seem to have firmed up and it works with your hair.
Beth do you know that Bono is a German word meaning, " VOICE BOX'
Avoiding 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday' for all the possible political drama, that could arise in the comments, huh... this is probably the smart thing to do. 😁
you know Bono is german for Voice Box
Bono is Latin for good and Vox is Latin for voice. It would be Good Voice if it wasn't a nickname from a hearing aid shop on O'Connell street in 1970s Dublin.
@@l.coleman279 sorry but, Paul Hewson nckname is BONO, which in Latin or German IDK means VOICE BOX......U2 rules
@danreed5171 Paul Hewson's nickname was Bono Vox of O'Connell Street given to him by his friend Gavin Friday in the 70s. Paul Hewson then shortened his nickname to the stage name Bono. Both Bono and Vox are Latin never German and again it was a coincidence as to the meaning as Gavin thought the name of the store was funny to stick on his friend. Or just go read Bono's book.
@@l.coleman279 u are correct sir, I'd forgotten that.....KOOL nickname uh BONO VOX
Beth, you need a hand in chosing the right versions!
I found that performance a bit dissappointing. Maybe because he had guitar or maybe just sung the song to many times. I felt it lacked the magic it usually has. A favourite U2 track of mine. I love his voice.
Great song with lots of emotion, but the 2005 Vertigo tour shows (2006 legs were stronger) rival the 2001 Elevation shows for his weakest vocals (the albums these tours support also show this too). The best versions of One are from the 1992 Zoo TV - Outside Broadcast US shows. His voice has changed so much over the 40+ yrs of U2, but there's some good songs in each era.
Omg you should’ve listened to the version with Mary J Blige. It is epic.
Mary J 💛
Makes me laugh your critiquing a live performance! He’s on tour playing every night and prob navigating his voice through to survive & give it enough strength night after night .
I really prefer the version by Warren Haynes/Gov't Mule. It's so much more raw.
Or U2 and Mary J Blige
No
@@musicaddict5076 yes!
This is the worst example of the man. try U2 'Every breaking Wave'
The first 5 U2 studio albums were excellent. The 5th album, Achtung Baby, arguably the best. This song, for me, is probably the weakest song on the album. It sounds bland however well put together in the studio. The actual live performance is better than the album version as they amp up with more energised guitar riffs, unlike the subdued and muted album cut. I do some singing and I find the vocal melody very boring to sing.
Give me Ultraviolet Light from that album anyday.
To my ears it sounds like he's avoiding certain notes because either he can't reach them anymore, or it's just too much of a strain. Or too many cigarettes?
It's a 2 hour set and he's saving his voice for the high notes on Miss Sarajevo and Sometimes you can't make it your own
Wonderful review BUT this song is wayyyyyyy overplayed. They have SOOOOO many other fantastic songs that just don't get any attention.
not one of the better versions of this song....
The version with maryjane blige is so much better
TBH his solo version without Mary J Blige sounds erm.... sh1te.
It wasn't that bad. But that version became so iconic, and he sing it so weakly... as you say soft consonants.
It's just an example of the b- U2 period.
Seriously they did shite, War, shite, Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Shite and then more and more Shite.
U2 is easily the most overrated band of all time. But they are just shit.
Thanks for stopping by to advance the conversation. ✌🏼
You ruin it with your constant talking
Bono ruining another great song, it's a mystery why he can't just sing the damn thing the way people want.
He was in a 2 hour set singing other songs such as Miss Sarajevo and Sometimes you can't make it your own
Would love to hear you react to "Every Breaking Wave" from the MTV EMA's.
