Between 1984 to around 1990, Bono's voice was absolutely phenomenal. It's changed over the years and it still has a unique and beautiful quality to it.. of course, he delivers his performance from the heart which is the magic ingredient.
I think the best period started and finished earlier. The purity and range of the voice on 1981’s “October” is no longer present even by 1987’s “Joshua Tree”
Bono didn't fully develop as a singer until the early 90's and his stage performances during that period is simply unmatched by anyone. He could have never pulled off a song like Lemon in 1985. His early years...first 3 albums he's even mentioned he sounded like a girl.

There’s nothing especially tricky about it, especially for a singer who had been successfully employing falsetto from time to time both on record and in performance for more than a decade by then. The singer on War, October and the Unforgettable Fire sang lines that were at least as challenging as anything in “Lemon”, and was more than capable of singing it if it had been available for him to to sing then.
I'm a 33 year fan of U2 and of course Bono's voice, lyrics and persona The man has magic in his voice, after meeting him I can say it's in his heart, he is honestly a lovely person! I'm glad I stumbled in! Thank you!

Bono is so underrated as a vocalist. I’m from Dublin, I can tell you we really don’t appreciate his talent. One of my favourite performances of his is not with U2, it’s with Clannad on a song called “in a lifetime”. Go listen, amazing

One of your previous videos (forget if YT or "Discover..." course) inspired me to experiment with "The Unforgettable Fire" in my own vocal explorations. I've always loved the "drama" of what Bono does with his voice. So rich and expressive, very similar to Freddie Mercury. Another great analysis to add to my favorite singer collection!
Fantastic analysis. I really enjoyed how you broke things down and really paid attention to the important details. The stuff that 99% of cover singers ignore is EXACTLY what makes Bono's version so much better. You are such a talented singer and have such control over your voice. The only thing I could say about your version of singing vs Bono's is that Bono's seems "natural", "effortless" but what I would notice if you were to sing the whole song through it would be, "man, this guy is really working hard". But some of that could be from the processing that Bono's vocals went through.

I must say that the way I always responded to Bono's singing now makes sense at a deeper level, and from a developing singer's perspective: He really was such a master at this unique vocal expressiveness...easily flowing from a gut-wrenching plea to soft-and-sexy purr. You really get the sense that he is singing to his own soul, and privately to his "love". You have given us a really valuable lesson on using airflow while singing; when used so sensitively like Bono does in this song...it's brilliant, evocative and wonderfully expressive! :-)

Yes live Lemon on ZooTV is something else he blends that great falsetto into his rich deep vocal for a very intersting and attractive sound. Lemon is a great piece of performance art.
Yes! Great analysis. The perfectly imperfect nature of his performances really comes out when you listen to his isolated vocal tracks. He has that Buckley vulnerability counterbalanced with a healthy dose of frontman swagger. Big influence and inspiration. End of Achtung? Acrobat into Blindness? Epic!

He seems to have really good breath support, and amazing colors and emotion...hes all emotion, but wondering if this wild and crazy vocal technique is what contributed to his on again off again vocals since the early 90s. Maybe the smoking was mostly the issue there.

Bono’s best yodel is on the phrase “Memphis sky” in the 1984 song “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. I’ve never heard him pull it off live (where he always tries to hit the high note in chest voice for some reason), but on the record it’s a perfectly executed gear-change from chest to falsetto.

As a singer Bono had fantastic range and tone. He was very Irish, as Sinaed, with tons of emotions and dynamics. Constant screaming/pushing/smoking/drinking sadly led to permanente damage of his instrument. He lost all his strengths by the end of the 90'. On ATYCLB he already sounds weak and old, sometimes almost unrecognizable. He regained some power 10 years later (singing lessons?) for a couple of years, but it was too late. I would really like to hear songs like Surrender and Magnificent sung by his '85 self.
Amazing insight, Chris. What a singer he is. Bono's not bad, either. Bono's early singing was really bright, in my view - it's changed a lot over the years. My favourite era is Achtung Baby - live from Sydney, for example - but the Mexico Live show from 1997 is amazing, vocally speaking. I'd love to see a breakdown of that some time.

I must say that when I clicked on this video, I was not expecting to hear Bono compared to a sedated witch. Lol! Great video. Although one thing I was hoping for- it makes sense that you would cover some of their most popular songs such as the ones off the Joshua Tree however one thing that seems to be ignored by a lot of people is his 2000-2010s work. It would be interesting to hear an analysis of his singing on the more recent albums! I still liked the video though, good job! :)

You really should check out his earlier work. He got more adept at manipulating those gravelly tones as he got older, but he loses the choir-boy clarity of tone and pitch you’ll find on a record like 1981’s “October”. The high notes on songs like the title track and “Gloria” are extraordinary.
Chris, there is this fantastic singer called Tom Chaplin from Keane, a band from London. His technique is mesmerizing since there’s actually virtually NONE distortion and cracking going on with his register, which is absulutely amazing… plus he manages to sing smoothly and effortlessly very difficult high notes. Please make a vid about Tom!

Great video but I think it might have been worth mentioning the Irish 'brogue' that Bono would have naturally developed as he grew up. I'm half Irish and the way they speak leads to a lot of what Chris is saying coming quite naturally to them just in normal conversation. I mean just listen to Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries , sadly no longer with us.

Might be a silly and useless observation, definitely not technique or technical, but perhaps the way to channel Bono is to actually feel the emotions he song is presenting. If you can get into the emotional space of the song, the sound probably comes easier. Just my thought, that our voices reflect out emotions automatically. There are some songs I can think of that I wouldn't want to do every night, just because I wouldn't want to be in that emotional space every night. (Not that I can sing, I can't... just dabble with it.) That said, it's an introspective song, about painful love. So excess power and belting isn't really on the menu. Resignation might be the right description... You love her but it's painful... and there's nothing you can do about it. A little bit like "Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For" as well.
Feel Bono does a honky-hooty thing live on high notes, you can really hear it on live versions of with or without you and early live versions of still havent found what im looking for
I actually never listened to U2 before. In this style for me I occasionally listened to Glenn Frey and others that I very rarely listened to but I liked their tone would be Lou Gramm and George Michael.

I must say that when I clicked on this video, I was not expecting to hear Bono compared to a sedated witch. Lol! Great video. Although one thing I was hoping for- it makes sense that you would cover some of their most popular songs such as the ones off the Joshua Tree however one thing that seems to be ignored by a lot of people is his 2000-2010s work. It would be interesting to hear an analysis of his singing on the more recent albums! I still liked the video though, good job! :)

I am becoming more fearless and free in my practice so without meeting me, you've done WONDERS! 😊. I see other people are asking about Amy Winehouse but if you are going to look at female singers who have a rock edge Kate Bush would be my first pick esp The Dreaming Lp. I was never keen on U2 but your critique actually made me appreciate the artistry which I wasn't expecting at all. Keep up the good work 🤩

You really should check out his earlier work. He got more adept at manipulating those gravelly tones as he got older, but he loses the choir-boy clarity of tone and pitch you’ll find on a record like 1981’s “October”. The high notes on songs like the title track and “Gloria” are extraordinary.
Chris, there is this fantastic singer called Tom Chaplin from Keane, a band from London. His technique is mesmerizing since there’s actually virtually NONE distortion and cracking going on with his register, which is absulutely amazing… plus he manages to sing smoothly and effortlessly very difficult high notes. Please make a vid about Tom!

If I can tell, I feel your mic (or equalization, I dont know) is not the right for the purpose, when you talk its great but when you put volume and strenght it does'nt give the best result, but I love your videos and the way you teach, you are a great singer and teacher

Great video but I think it might have been worth mentioning the Irish 'brogue' that Bono would have naturally developed as he grew up. I'm half Irish and the way they speak leads to a lot of what Chris is saying coming quite naturally to them just in normal conversation. I mean just listen to Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries , sadly no longer with us.

Might be a silly and useless observation, definitely not technique or technical, but perhaps the way to channel Bono is to actually feel the emotions he song is presenting.
If you can get into the emotional space of the song, the sound probably comes easier.
Just my thought, that our voices reflect out emotions automatically.
There are some songs I can think of that I wouldn't want to do every night, just because I wouldn't want to be in that emotional space every night. (Not that I can sing, I can't... just dabble with it.)
That said, it's an introspective song, about painful love. So excess power and belting isn't really on the menu. Resignation might be the right description... You love her but it's painful... and there's nothing you can do about it.
A little bit like "Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For" as well.
Feel Bono does a honky-hooty thing live on high notes, you can really hear it on live versions of with or without you and early live versions of still havent found what im looking for

I actually never listened to U2 before. In this style for me I occasionally listened to Glenn Frey and others that I very rarely listened to but I liked their tone would be Lou Gramm and George Michael.

Can you please do an analysis on James Dean Bradfield from Manic Street Preachers. He’s a very hard one to sing like especially when it comes to his belting techniques and his use of unbridled emotions.
