Buying tyres for an electric vehicle and why I prefer all-season tyres in the UK

  • In this video I explain why I chose all-season tyres for my Hyundai Ioniq Electric, but also give advise on how to choose tyres for your electric vehicle. Electric vehicles don't need 'special' tyres. They are not heavier than ICE vehicles and in terms of the tyres, the demands are the same. Of course, if it is a higher performance EV like a Tesla or a Taycan, then you do need the appropriate high performance tyres. As always, the specification of the tyres must match the vehicle.
    In the UK, I prefer all-season tyres. The ones I've fitted to my Hyundai Ioniq are Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-2 205/55/R216 91H. EU rated C B 68dB. You can find out more here www.goodyear.eu/en_gb/consume...
    The quietest summer tyre I could find in this size is a Goodyear EfficientGrip runflat EU rated at B E 66dB.

    I put Michelin CrossClimate tyres on my (ICE) vehicle just before "the beast from the East" and I wouldn't go back to a regular summer tyre. I think they are better than just "OK" in the summer. They feel like a premium summer tyre to me, but they also give me the grip I need in a British winter.

      I put crossclimate 2 on my suv in the US in moderate weather area and I love them for winter and speing and fall, but on hot dry pavement they feel terrible to me. They feel “squirmy” for lack of a better word. They also hydroplane worse is super super heavy rain than my old tires but in normal rain (wet) conditions they are also great, just not for when theres 3 inches of water pooled on the road.

      I had to do a lot of highway driving the last 2 years so my wife really wanted winter tires. Wow, what a difference, I had Bridgestone Ecopias with my CRV, which are soft enough for winter driving. But when you have winter tires on you feel like you can go the speed limit or higher even in the worst winter road conditions.
      I went with Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV. 16,000km in my 1st winter and they still seem brand new. Only 10.5/32” tread but it’s guaranteed for 60K but will easily do 90K. The sipes are deep so when you get down to 4/32” you still have winter tires.
      It’s still a soft rubber compound and you still have siping

    Brilliant video! At last there’s someone else who actually knows about tyres. I try to teach this to fellow drivers. There’s so much to know about tyres as they’re so important. I tell all my customers these and many more points. Thumbs up from me.

    Fortunately, Matt, you have confirmed my thinking. Two of our family cars have Goodyear Gen 2 or 4 on them. I've been using All Seasons tyres for donkeys years - they used to be known as Mud and Snows in the old days (when we really had snow!). They've never let me down. Contact All Contacts seem to be rated well these days.

    Tyre Nerd here: Unless the regulations have been updated in the past few years the DB rating on the EC1222/2009 tyre label is from an external pass-by noise test carried out under Reg117.
    That DB value is NOT what you'll experience within the vehicle (all vehicles are different) but a lower DB rating will usually correspond to reduced cabin noise.
    Not every tyre in a range is tested, usually a selection from the range to derive likely values for the rest so whilst the value can be a good indicator it may not have been the size tested.

    These all season tyres and all other brands that look similar has ability to cushion better road bumps and imperfections better than typical summer tyres and therefore these are quieter than standard summer plus the fact that they are made from different compound that remains soft at low temperatures where summer tyres goes plastic.       Not that simple, they aren't as good as summer tyres when the temperature is above 12c. Above 7c, it's neck and neck. It's rarely 5c or below in the UK, so I prefer summer tyres. Even then, summer tyres in the dry are better braking than all seasons or winter tyres... even when it's 0c!

    The new ZE50 Zoe comes with Michelin primacy 4 tyres.
    And as you mentioned in the video Michelin no longer make EV tyre that came on my 2017 Q90 ZE40 ( 16'')
    I have Michelin crossclimate plus on the front which have been great and I managed to pick up some of the Michelin EV tyres about a month ago for the back for a good price.
    My original Michelinl EV back tyres lasted just over 3 years from new about 38,000 miles.

      Sorry I meant the original Michelins on the back lasted 3 years , but I only managed to get around 20,000 ( 18 - 24 months ) from the front with tyre pressure set at 40 psi from new then the side edges started to crack.

    Hi Matt. Thanks for the video. You make a credible argument for all season tyres. I have a hybrid RAV4 with electronic 4 wheel drive and having been researching for predominantly quiet road tyres that are good on wet grass and shallow mud - an impossible combination. I think if I can find quiet all season tyres I’ll follow your example. Many thanks.

      All-season tyres are not off-road tyres. They're summer tyres which also work in the winter buying using a compound that isn't affected so much by temperature. So while the tread pattern is designed to work well in snow and water, I'm not sure they will have much of a benefit over summer tyres on wet grass and shallow mud. To be fair, most tyres don't drip on wet grass and its more down to the driver and the vehicle.

    I replaced my Mitsubishi PHEV tyres with Michelin CrossClimate for the go anywhere anytime option but put Continental Eco Contact on my Imiev to maximise the range, no issues.

    From my engineering experience a 1 decibel increase is effectively doubling. So x2 sound for every db.

      This is incorrect. It is widely documented that a 3Db (decibel) increase represents a doubling in noise volume. The scale is logarithmic.

      This is also incorrect, it's a 10dB change that is required for a perceived doubling/halving in volume. A 3dB increase would be a doubling of energy.

    I was looking for a all-season tyres for my EV, I'm now in Belgium using Michelin Crossclimates+ for my ICE car. Have been looking now for tests, would better choose Continental Allseasoncontact.
    I have read that these Goodyears are quite bad in summer +25'C or more.

    Will bear this in mind for my next set. Thank you. Could there be issue with insurance if one were to pick a load or speed rating less than the original OEM tyres? A lot of insurance companies are not very flexible in the age of internet forms and call centre scripts and their yes/no Q&As.

    Looking at the next rubber for my ID.3 and I am erring towards all season tyres. The only fly in the ointment for me is that they all seem to be directional tyres which makes proper rotation of the rubber around the car difficult.
    I also have a spare rim in the but which side do I set it up for? It's useless for a directional tyre. 🤔

    thanks for this....we don't like the michelin tyres fitted to our zoe.... why do you say they are so bad? we have poor wear and multiple punctures ...let me know what you think of them.

    HI Matt. I'm really enjoying your videos. Now choosing 4-season tyres for the same Ioniq Electric 28kW in Ireland. Would you buy the Vector 4 again for this car or look for improvements (in noise, wet performance, efficiency)? Any alternatives that really stand out in your view?

    a 3dB reduction in noise is half the noise: that's how the dB scale works: You don't make this clear.

    Matt would it be possible to do a video on sourcing and fitting 12 v batteries ? I have a 2018 Kia Soul there does not seem to be a lot of choice out there.

      I can do, when I next have a Soul in. But the replacement battery is a Yuasa YBX3108 and you can source on eBay.

    Have you noticed any difference in m/kWh compared to the OEM tyres?

      My car has done 75,000 miles so didn't have OEM tyres on it. Most summer tyres are graded B for rolling resistance and these all-season tyres are graded C. So the difference would hardly be noticeable. 3% worse supposedly.
      I've just driven to London and back this evening and done 118 miles at an average of 4.9mphkWh. That is with heating and everything on all the time. 5 miles left on GOM as I got home and it went into turtle mode as I pulled up onto the drive. So a bit worse than I would normally expect, but then so many factors (like temperature, water on the road etc) can effect range, its difficult to say how much is down to the tyres.
      Still, the whole point is that they are safer than summer tyres when temperature gets below 7 degrees. I don't mind paying a small price of a few miles less range for that extra safety and the ability to drive easily in ice/snow.

    Hi, I have the same Ioniq and I want to get the second set of rims but Ioniq rims are quite rare and the closest option I could find was Kona R17 215/55. Would it work on Ioniq ? and would it be better to keep R17 for winter or summer? How much would it effect economy? Not mentioned bad speedometer(I can live with that). Ps I found out that R15 Ioniq hybrid rims does not fit.... Thank you in advance :)

      Personally I would not change the size. Larger wheels results in slightly less comfort and slightly less range. You may also give your insurance company a reason not to pay out on a claim, unless they have been informed. I would try to source the same size wheels from a breakers/scrap yard. Plenty sell their parts on eBay. I've not changed the wheels on any Ioniqs and therefore can't give you any advice on this.

    I would love to know your consumption now with those tyres. Our original Michelin tyres only lasted 25000km (front) , then changed to Toyo for front which lasted 35000km, but when i got anither set of Toyo tyres 4x new ones with ratings C/A 70dB i noticed our range dropped around 10-15%, now im looking to buy Michelin e-Primacy for Ioniq.

    No the cross climate is summer oriented like Londo an sth of England . The vector is for wetter climate like north of England

    Spend some money and get a second set of wheels and winter tyres for the cold weather. All seasons tyres are mediocre in all situations. You said it yourself, most important item on your car !!!
    Most people only look at forward traction…… STOPPING DISTANCE is all important in icy weather
