@@gaetanodepaola2ndchannel179 Jan 7 2019 I think was the date of this EP release show
There’s an automated track running from the laptop on the synth. If you look the bass (pls don’t be mad I don’t know that instrument) player plays the synth a couple times but he has to play his instrument, too.
I don't know what this says about me, but I wasn't too sure what I thought about this piece when I heard the original video recording on Adam's channel. I knew that it was called "Drunk", so even I realised that the lurching sense of dissonance and chaos was deliberate. I just didn't know whether I liked it. Now I've SEEN you play it, though, I love it. It's great. I have a much clearer sense of its structure, purpose, and aesthetic. Guess, I'm an inadequate listener or something, but, yes, watching the performance really helped me to interpret and appreciate the sounds I was hearing. Thanks, Shawn!
Same for me, I just scrubbed throu the Animated Video, but didn't quite got a hold of it what it was all about. I did not really catch the tune ... But seeing it live performed makes really a huge difference.
Even though I love the animations Ben Levin made for the studio recording, I have to say watching you playing it live is IMO twice as better. Maybe I have a bias towards it because my favorite version of Sequence Start is the one you did Live with MIDI-controlled visuals. Watching you both recreate the whole sound live has is own kind of magic, and if you combine that astonishingly beautiful performance with a incredible mixing (Specially on the drums and bass) is a combination hard to defeat. Thanks for existing.
For me these rhythms actually feel pretty natural. inb4 alcoholic, but I'm busy with rhythms for the biggest part of the day (drummers curse I guess), and I also love to tap along with music in odd timings that somehow still feel to make sense.
You should dive into Indian music, the rhythms used there also feel odd and irregular to our western ear, but are (very) well developed, complex and intricate (and difficult to master :)).
same here my dude, i end up playing in odd time time signatures a lot of the time because it's so fun to experience the different sort of rhythms that come up that i would've never otherwise thought of
This is legitimately one of my favorite songs. I listen to it daily. It scratches every tension and release, tone, technicality, and rhythm itch I have. Good job boys.
I would really like to see the sheet music for this. I've been drumming for a year and a half and I don't exactly understand how you're feeling/counting this. I think trying something like this could be a great opportunity to learn new things.
When watching/listening to this I feel like I’m watching people way smarter than me having a very intricate musical conversation with words way outside my vocabulary. It’s very fascinating. Truthfully at first listen/glance it was a little difficult for me to enjoy, but after watching Adam’s video and having a better understanding of what’s going on in the song I definitely have a greater appreciation for it and find it more enjoyable since I feel like I’ve been a little more informed on this musical conversation. I really like the ideas and concepts being expressed, it was just hard for me to catch on to and understand intuitively. But very nice work!
I just saw Sungazer live, and yep, it's like being in a room full of people who are way smarter than you, talking about things you barely understand, but they're nice enough to pause and help you keep up now and then. I left the show with my brain buzzing with new ideas, all trying to connect with each other.
I really love some of the little bass licks Adam plays in this version that's not on the studio version. Very talented you guys and love your vids Adam!
That intro really feels drunk. Interesting move from the "grid" of standard 4/4 time. This opens up a massive world of musical creativity. You guys are keeping this very tight despite the rhythmic challenges. Nice job - creative, different and fun to listen to.
I can tell Adam plays lightly with his right hand (pause) because the tone he uses, I feel like it wouldn't work with a harder touch. Really great and precise playing!
the more I listen to this, the more I understand it and like it. I rarely like music that has a charged, heavy, messy sound but this song is such a flawless union of chaos and order, imprecision and perfection.
This is just fucking amazing!!!! I can't get enough of this!! Props to Shawn for those nearly impossible drum patterns, and also to Adam for those amazing details like the distorted vocals, the amazing arpeggios, etc...Incredible work guys!
This is certainly my new source of inspiration for music and my own music making. Incredible, such a unique sound, please keep this up. Very inspiring! Thank you.
I can't begin to tell you how much I like this song! This is definitely one of my all-time favourites. Since I discovered it, I replay this song weekly multiple times! This is in my opinion one of the coolest and most progressive tracks I've ever heard. It's complicated and all, but it's also really catchy. If I get asked what I listen to, this is almost always the song I send them the first. Just an absolute masterpiece! Fun fact: everyone I've shown this video to, regardless of genre tastes has liked this so far! They might not listen to it themselves, but they have absolutely no problem with it being played. They all appreciate the art, and the skills, and the catchiness of this tune! I never get tired of this song!
I was just talking with a buddy the other day about how I was itching for some 'new' sounds to be excited about. This shares a lot of elements with the types of music I listen to but it feels 'new,' at least to me. I also love the story behind the vocal samples and the song definitely carries the legacy of the original in a forward direction. I want more. I NEED more!
I am sitting in a 3m x 2m room contemplating my life decisions whilst consuming copyous amounts of whisky and listening to this piece. It is truily a soundtrack to drunkards depression.
Keep up the great work and vids. I'm a bass player, I know nothing about scales, arpeggios, anything, because I play by ear. I get quite a bit out of your videos, though, because there are always tidbits of info I can use at my low level of playing, while the rest of what you're talking about is in another language. Keep throwing it out there, though, eventually some of it will stick! I really enjoyed the Sungazer Drunk session.
Theory always helps, and you should at the very least know the modes and and how to identify intervals of the chords and scales you play, but it can be daunting. Try starting out with your ear by creating your own melodic idea and then move it around the neck. As you move it, with each position change, switch out one or two notes that you like for other notes within your "own" arpeggio. You'll hear it take on a chord progression. Most importantly, you'll find that changing just two notes, or hell, even one note, will drastically change the context of what you're playing. You can start and map out the concepts that you may want to learn about eventually, and it becomes less daunting this way. Hell, this is how Periphery writes their songs and their riffs (when not chugging riffs) are built off of a vast array of arpeggios, yet most of the members don't know any theory. Hope this helps.
@@stephenopolis3294 Yes, it is daunting. Very daunting. I'm starting from knowing nothing. I really appreciate your advice, and will start incorporating it into my practice time. My main problem is that since I started playing again(I took a 15 year break)is that I'm learning a lot of new to me songs, but not much about the music itself. For instance, I'll hear a song, hear the repeating patterns that make up the basis of the song, but when it's time to improvise I sound like I'm just doing scales. Which I am, and it sounds dumb. Your advice will help. Thank you!
Just amazing.... I discovered your channel yesterday, learning about polyrhythmia and you blow my mind ♥ your are very dedicated and talented too! Greatings from Argentina!

I am so glad for Adam Neely's video about of the song (I know Shawn, you may be tired about hearing his name), because I never would figured it out at all. I've never be able to play it, mind you. But it's a brilliant example of "music is the space between notes". Taking four bars of 3/4 with a triplet feel but very carefully picking each note out each bar to make a off kilter 4/4 feeling slow groove is just top level stuff in theory, but more impressive, the execution works.
Oooof that's really trippy and really good. Not the music you would dance to, but get drunk and contemplate life and phylosophy ^^ Has a tom waits vibe to it
