    Protect you ears, while you can! Hearing damage is permanent and accelerated by long-term exposure to loud noises (like drums). In conjunction with National Save Your Hearing Day on May 31st, I went to get my hearing tested, and speak about my favorite solutions for hearing protection.
    Thanks to EarPeace for their support. I've been loving their musician's earplugs for the last 6 months. They're running a sale for National Save Your Hearing Day (until 11:59 pm EST on May 31st, 2021). Use discount code MDW30 to get 30% off orders of $50 and above. It's valid for all items, excluding Last Call items that are already significantly discounted. I'd personally recommend a pair of the Music Pro earplugs (I use 16 dB reduction) and a set of interchangeable filters (16, 19 and 25 dB).

    I'm 57 years old and have played drums since I was 15. When I started playing, nobody used hearing protection (or nobody I knew). I first became aware of hearing loss about 7 years ago. Hearing loss has affected me in several ways, none of them good. First, in social situations with a lot of background sound (like restaurants or bars) it is very difficult for me to communicate. The result of this was that over years I became withdrawn in these environments, without really understanding why. Also my appreciation and enjoyment when listening to music has suffered, although I still love playing (for the last 15-20 years, with hearing protection). Some of these problems can be solved by using hearing aids, which I have had for the last two years, but they are built to facilitate speech rather than music, and (for me) are uncomfortable to wear, so I only use them occasionally, when meeting groups in noisy environments. There is also tinnitus, which is another story.
    The reason for writing about myself is to reinforce the message of this video - everyone is indestructible when they are young, but youth passes, and physical decline when it comes can be difficult to deal with. To all drummers, but particularly those who are younger, please hear the message of Shawn's video. Shawn, thank you for this video - may your hearing remain perfect for many many years to come.

      I actually have excellent hearing still, was always pretty careful, but I still struggle immensely with communicating in environments where there's other noise going on. Even a fan running in the background can make it hard for me to understand someone.
      Sign language, my friend. It's a life saver. Basic conversational sign language doesn't take that long to learn, and as long as the people you generally want to talk to are open to learning some, it's an excellent solution. Luckily my S.O. has deaf family members so it was never a problem with her.

    Ever been to a show where the engineer has mixed the sound so that it’s super bright and kinda painful above about 5k, but when you put foam earplugs in, it sounds good? That scares me - that engineer has blown all the top end of their hearing so that their life sounds like foam earplugs, and when they mix sound they’re compensating so that it sounds good again.

      @PrimalCircus 3 года назад +7

      Wear them whenever you are playing drums. Use foamies whenever possible. They are super cheap. They are super comfortable you get used to,them quickly. You will prefer the sound after a while. Do everything you can to save your hearing. I started to get ringing last year and regret not wearing hearing protection on every gig. I have been playing professionally for 30+ years. It took one loud session whacking a snare drum to give me tinnitus. It sucks. I’ll never hear high end from music again. What sucks most is that I will never hear silence again. Be careful.

      @@PrimalCircus why recommend foamies though, they really disable me too distinguish tones and concerts sound more shit? • @PrimalCircus
      @PrimalCircus 3 года назад +2

      @@gijsvanleeuwen5784 - There are quite a few reasons why I recommend foamies.
      I hope fitted musicians ear plugs work better for you than they did for me. If I could do it again, I would have used foamies every time. I prefer the way drums sound with foamies. I hear more low end and less high end. I had to try a bunch of different foamies before I found ones I like.
      Cymbals are naturally the loudest instruments of the drum set and the bass drum is the quietest. Foamies almost mix the drums for you. After you have them in for a while, your brain will add the high end. You have to wear them more than a few times for your brain to do the work.
      To each their own, but as someone who has played professionally for three decades, I can tell you, you don’t want to get tinnitus. It REALLY sucks! I will never hear silence again. I will never be in a quiet room and not hear high end ringing. But, I know how I felt about it decades ago and know that I never thought it would happen to me. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen to you. And it may not. I hope you don’t think back to this comment in 20 years and wish you had taken the advice.
      For me, performing is work. I think of loud music in performance settings the same way as a construction worker thinks of loud sound in their job. As a professional drummer, I really only need to use my ears as monitors/reference. Save your ears for listening to music and recording. Don’t wreck your ears playing live music.
      All the best!

    They should have tested above 6kHz. That's where most of your hearing loss would be.

    • @NoHurry08
      @NoHurry08 3 года назад +1

      A puretone audiometry test differs a bit in it's frequency span between countries. Here in Sweden for example, we normally test the span from 125-8000 Hz because that's where most of our speech sounds happen and would be the span where a hearing loss would affect your daily communication. You could probably scheduele a test for higher frequencies if want to find out but I doubt that kind of test would be free of charge.

    11 years of drumming, always used protection. Solo in the basement, while jamming with others at a club, on the stage, in the studio, anytime I sit behind the drums I at least have in-earphones to drown out the excess noise (often without even a click on them, just instead of earplugs). No point feeling weird about it. Other people usually won't be wearing them, thinking that it's not cool or whatever. Fuck them, they don't matter, protect your hearing - always!
    On a side note, it's truly scary how few people realise that this is important. Over my 11 years of playing with a lot of different people I've honestly been the only one to consistently protect my hearing. Others would only wear headphones in the studio, or if we had in-ear monitors on stage. Otherwise just taking it all in that ear drum, baby. Very unwise. Very unwise indeed.

    Even a tiny bit of hearing loss can have a huge effect on your perception.
    I have some hearing damage in my right ear and a bit of ringing in my left, it is so minute that it doesn't show up on tests (which were "basically perfect"). My hearing is definitely shifted towards the left (about 30°) though and as a result almost all my perception of "sound stage" is gone and it is so distracting that I have immense difficulties listing to/enjoying music in isolation.
    I couldn't exactly pinpoint the origin, but a bunch of small disregards for hearing protection (it can be really difficult always being ready for loudness in a machining shop) probably just added up.
    I'd unironically give an arm and a leg to fix that. Music helped me through the darkest times in my life and I feel like I've lost one of my biggest comforts.
    Always protect your hearing, even if the situation seems trivial.

      Also I assume the loss isn't flat, so while I can relatively easily get vocals dead on, the rest will still be off some and there is little to no soundstage.
      If the dials on my monitors are accurate (which I assume, since they are fairly high end), I need to boost around 2-3dB,

    the custom-made ear plugs are actually really affordable these days. if you are a professional get those! if you are on a budget or a live music consumer (concerts/raves/etc) get the things Shawn recommended in this video. also; take the time to clean your gear regularly. wearing earplugs and headphones drastically raises the amount of bacterias inside your ears which can lead to in-ear infections. that got me a differently pitched tinnitus in each ear when i was 12. so for the past 25 years i have my head stuck between two jet-engines in standby-mode. trust me.. you do not want that!

      Exactly! Clean the ear gear, not the ear canal itself. :)

    I have a weird combination of hypersensitive hearing and hearing loss. Like, I still hear sounds that most people have never been able to hear but might have trouble hearing what someone standing next to me says if there's background noise... and constant tinnitus in both ears. Obviously the hearing loss is because of music: I used to mix in a really bass-heavy way, only made everything louder if something in a mix started to drown other stuff out, etc. I've never played live (except once in middle school) and have never even touched drums (except also once in middle school), so just being a bedroom musician can still be bad for your ears. Maybe only if you're an idiot like me, but... well, I'm sure I'm not the only one who was like "LOL BASS GO BRRR" at the height of the brostep epidemic and/or who's thought "it's not metal unless it's loud" or whatever.

    20 years of music production, drumming, bass, DJing... Now I have tinnitus and reduced hearing on my right ear in the bass-regions, low mids and highs :)
    Despite always using protection and working on pretty low volumes compared to most... Now i'm stuck with having to pan everything slightly right to not be frustrated with key elements in the mix not staying centered where I want them. Can't hear above 13K, which isn't great. Protect your ears people!

    You were very lucky... The thief might have come,back for your ears next ! 😳
    Jokes aside, glad your hearing is in tip top shape. Certainly something to always be careful with.
    I think guitarists should try not to scoff at lower wattage amps for playing at home, no need for 100W in a small room... Also, my dad used to play drums and his kit could be heard blocks away. I know he was enthusiastic, but there is no reason why to have seismic wave coming out of your house during practice.

    I've had expensive custom molded earplugs for years and they definitely were a game changer. I could not believe how clear everything sounded at band rehearsal compared to foam earplugs. That being said, I've since used also Alpine Musicsafe Pro's (20-30 USD) and Happy Ears earplugs (15-20 USD), and they sounded reasonably similar to the expensive earplugs while being very affordable. My custom molded ones came with Etymotic ER15 filters, so I think that some non-molded Etymotic earplugs (such as Etymotic ER20) probably will sound quite similar as well.

    I was in a Dream Theater concert yesterday. I brought my those rubber/plactic earplugs as usual. I first check how long when they start. When Mangini not the first snare of the Alien, I was like holy shit, it was like something banging on my ear drum explodedwas immediately out my earplugs. Then I checked around and not single person was using ear protection. I felt bad for them in the future. The last Satriani concert, a guy came with his young kid and the kid did not have protection at all. And that concert was very loud, too. Bad parenting.
    Of course, you don't need to put the plugs fully inside. Just placing them a little loose in the entrance of ear canal is enough to block the excessive decibels but you can still hear the details of the music and cymbal hits etc.
    Near the end of the concert when I was head banging, the plugs came off and I did not place them back as I did previously for a few minutes and after the concert I immediately felt kind of discomfort in my ears. I cannot think of what those people went through for 90 minutes of that loud sound. At least 120db.

    Played drums for years with minimal to no ear protection, or just wore over the ear headphones (usually only covering my right ear), already noticing the high end of my left ear going out. Not worth it at all, I'm only 22! Now I don't touch the drums without plugs, gonna save every last bit of hearing I can! Thanks for the brand rec!

    Short of the musicians’ plugs, the foam plugs from your local drugstore are cheap. I hand them out to folks around me at concerts. A few ears saved. A positive gesture from a music lover can go a long way to make a difference.

    I forgot who said it but they didn't lose their hearing from outside sources but rather by wearing in-ears and having the track turned up too much! Something I try to keep in mind, getting the optimum levels when playing to tracks.

    Great video to being awareness!! I am in a regional Mexican band and I play the drums/tarolas. I started wearing earplugs from Walmart around 2 years ago. I do not feel comfortable practicing or playing without them. I dislike the ringing noise after practices and gigs. Saludos colegas músicos🔥🥁🎼

    i have Severe Sensorineural hearing loss in my left ear, and mild loss in my right. I get my hearing tested annually, but as a musician, I'm always interested in how my hearing is in the ranges that doctors don't test. I also wonder if musicians have better "trained" ears for pitch and tone/timbre, so I wonder if we might perform better in hearing tests.

    Hey Shawn, thank you for the video and your courage to cover it so in-depth! I was wondering, how you use a click when practicing with your ear protection? I always have the trouble that I put on my ear protection and get a good balanced sound, but then for the click I need to put my big headphones on top because I can't use a (loud) monitor in my practice space.
    Thanks for your help!
    Flo

    I've kept Earpeace earplugs on my keychain for years now, can't co-sign enough. Bring em with you everywhere -- now that shows are happening again, you want them in your ears, doubly so when you're drumming. There's no shame in being the only one at the show/practice with earplugs in (you'll be happy saving your ears).

    I was born with massive hearing loss, i’ve done many hearing tests. Generally, a difference in around 5 decibels on the charts between ears/tests are not considered to be fully accurate. Many things can influence how you perceive the test and there is a margin of error. With that said, congrats on the practically perfect hearing!

    I use Earpeace for two years now, it's very good. I use it to play drums and guitar in front of a live amp, so - in lots of noise. Used it also on live concerts before the lockdown, it really is great that it doesn't muffle the sound so much as regular earplugs.

    One of my favorite purchases at a music store has been my set of vic firth earplugs! They make concerts sound better and they just sit in a little pouch on my Keychain. Definitely protect your ears, tinnitus as half of the people watching this could probably tell you, is the most annoying thing in the world, and asking people to repeat themselves is embarrassing as hell
