The top of my list for 'Most blatant display of greed and disrespect for your customers' is this whole practice of delaying microtransactions until after launch, allowing all the press releases to claim otherwise. The industry has become one of dealer and addict, and our dealers fully understand that a lot of us will buy because we don't have options for our franchises, little to no competition AND the big dealers simply buy and scatter the talented studios before pimping out our once great franchises to collect their cash and suffer our scorn.
6:36 My hypothesis was that in the time that Guitar Hero Live was being developed, Rock Band 3 was the dominant force in the action-rhythm genre, and was having this huge push for their Pro Instrument feature. RB3 sold controllers that used real guitar strings across a standard 21-fret board. it was still plastic, hollowed out for the electronics and sensors inside, and couldn't do much beyond normal notes and chords; it couldn't tell if you did a pinch harmonic, or used proper technique for a pick scrape, or anything like that, but it got the job done for a video game. Along with Rock Band 3's Pro Guitar / Pro Bass- as well as their Pro Drums which are still supported in RB4- there was also Ubisoft's Rocksmith and Rocksmith 2014 Edition which allowed you to plug in real guitars and basses. This new Guitar Hero would be competing with the then-upcoming Rock Band 4, and potentially another Rocksmith title in the near-future. Because of this data at the time, they couldn't afford to stagnate with 5-button controllers anymore.
The fact that there were so many Guitar Hero games is great. It let people get familiar with a variety of forms of rock music, high-profile or not. If anything there should have been more of them because you're basically just paying for a bunch of songs in another subgenre. There's no real way to exhaust that so they could have get turning the crank endlessly if the games hadn't fallen out of fashion
Wtf how u guys forget prototype series? Activision dump the radical entertainment studio that was a serious mistake from them.. We Need our prototype series back in line..

I think Activision should make their policy for those that make let's play videos clear and concise. It would make life easier for all of us as then we could buy the DLC and maybe more of it if Activision expressly permitted their gamers/youtubers full permission to monetise their videos. DTG (Dovetail Games) and other developers have allowed players to make videos and monetise them with no issues and perhaps if Activision and EA as well as Take2Games had similar policies in place. We would all know where we stand and they wouldn't get so much hate. Just my opinion here.
I feel a little bad for the guy from Activision Blizzard that had to announce Diablo Immortal at Blizzcon 2018. He instantly became a meme. He wasn't even the person who said the infamous "Do you guys not have phones?" It was some other guy that came on stage later. I'm fairly certain he knew people were going to hate this announcement, but he had a job to do.
Perhaps also mention that they finished off Raven Software independence. That company had a string of good singleplayer fps (e.g. Soldier of Fortune, Quake 4, Wolfenstein 2009 and Singularity) but they are now only contributor to the Call of Duty franchise.
It’s a great thing that Activision split from Bungie. As a long time fan of the Destiny series, it great to see that Bungie is making great strides to make Destiny 2 a better game

Speaking about recent events: the whole debacle about banning a Hearthstone player for speaking out in support of Hong Kong was quite a disaster. Besides that, I think the most hilarious thing about Activision is the fact that they release a new Call of Duty every year.

Blitzchung. The winner of a Starcraft II tournament said he was in support of the Hong Kong protestors, so Activision/Blizzard took back his winnings and banned him for a year. They then backtracked to a six month ban and gave him back his money, and then finally removed the ban altogether. They claimed it was for being "too political" despite other players getting political in interviews as well. Oh, they also fired the people talking to the player. In reality, it was to keep their Chinese investors happy because they wanted Diablo Immortal to succeed.

2 quotes from Activision boss (at the time at least, don't know if he still is) Bonny Kotick. "We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games." Taking the fun out of making video games? Sounds like a real threat to work for him. "In addition to building our player communities and service platforms for the benefit of our shareholders". He said that in 2012 so apperently the games aren't for us, it's for the shareholders. At least he's being honest, this time. Still a lousy policy if you ask me.
Just a minor correction for CTR:NF: You cannot buy battlepasses, they are all free. But yeah, the rest is true, you can buy ingame currency, which to be honest feels not "needed" so far, as in your payout is pretty nice, it is still there and I am really expecting them to either nerf the currency payout ingame or increase prices for future stuff, or both. They also rumor you will be able to buy progress for your battlepass aka grand prix with the currency which at first sounds bad, but it actually is not that bad: Many people have already bought everything that you can by just playing (I did not, I only buy stuff that I actually want + all the characters and skins so that I have them) and have nothing to spend their currency on. Since these battle passes happen pretty much every month, you are pretty much required to play constantly. Which on one hand is nice, you always have content and new stuff, on the other hand ,you can burn out easily if you always want to unlock everything. However, with all the excess coins people have, they can avoid farming the battlepass that much. I am not protecting Activision, I think they are the worst, worse than EA in my eyes and I'm sad I supported them with buying CTR:NF but on the other hand, it's one of my favourite games of all time. I am not saying microtransactions are good either, I am just saying they aren't harmful to the game so far. As long as they don't nerf payouts / increase costs, it's fine honestly with all the free stuff we are getting. (One new track every month, 3 characters, dozens of skins and a few karts, paint jobs, tires, decals etc you can unlock)
This one is a bit more recent, but Activision/Blizzard selling a $40 dlc bundle for overwatch 2 with promised access to single player mode, then canceling the single player, only to come back and say "you know what people want single player, lets go ahead and do that" then charge ANOTHER $40 for access to it. They wouldn't even go back and give access to single player to the people that had purchased the original bundle. Even if you bought the first bundle you would have to go and buy YET ANOTHER bundle for the same price as the first just to get the thing that they promised initially. Seems a lot like they just want money and don't care about their players at all.
This is a well-thought out video that addresses some of the lingering problems in AAA gaming right now. However, unlike other RUclipsrs who just run the same points into the ground ad nausea, for views and subs from outrage culture kids, you stated why these business practices are anti-consumer and how they negatively impact the gaming experience, and how games are released.
DJ Hero was actually pretty cool though. They made like 100 songs just for the game. Yeah, they were all mash-ups and remixes, but they were mostly made really well. The game play was fun too of course. Had the game been released two years earlier it wouldn't have crashed so hard.
DJ hero was super underrated. It's still one of Way Too Many Games in one year, but it was innovative and super fun. It's a shame they didn't focus on just it and GH 5.
That's the 3rd CEO who said, "There will be no micro transactions at launch" You need to pay attention to the wording they use. "At launch" in no way means forever. They're still scum bags for doing it, but if we're claiming we gamers have integrity we need to accept that little bit of fault.
There's a pretty big disconnect between people complaining about how these publishers handle things and people who are actually willing to boycott their games. Stop handing these people money!
Caddicarus had a rant about the Nitro Fueled microtrans thing, he's both pissed and heartbroken that Activison had the nerve to put microtransactions on a 20+ year old racing game
Funny thing about Guitar Hero. I found playing a real guitar easier than playing the controller. Probably because I'd been playing guitar for years when I first discovered the game. I eventually got the hang of it, but it was rough at first.
Why during the Exotic quests (like the one for the Sleeper Simulant) in Destiny 2 we're forced to re-do advanced versions of the Vanguard Strikes instead of special missions like in the first chapter?
Downhill jam was actually good. Underrated. But american wasteland and all the ones before are the greatest. They need to bring all those games back to new systems
As someone who actually plays guitar I found guitar hero live to be the most realistic the button combinations resembled using actual cords in comparison too the previous titles

This needs more exposure! Great vid
Activision: finally the past is in the past
Gameranx: uploads video
Activision: *ight imma head out*
dude DJ Hero was one of my favorite games growing up! It was nice to have a game like that with my taste in music lol
Next: 500 mistakes that EA wants you to forget
Dj hero was fun. Just creative enough to revitalize the idea of the hero franchise (atleast for the time that *that* lasted) imo
Other companies adding microtransactions:

My hypothesis was that in the time that Guitar Hero Live was being developed, Rock Band 3 was the dominant force in the action-rhythm genre, and was having this huge push for their Pro Instrument feature.
The Bungie-Activision split IMO should have been Number 1
The fact that there were so many Guitar Hero games is great. It let people get familiar with a variety of forms of rock music, high-profile or not. If anything there should have been more of them because you're basically just paying for a bunch of songs in another subgenre. There's no real way to exhaust that so they could have get turning the crank endlessly if the games hadn't fallen out of fashion
Wtf how u guys forget prototype series? Activision dump the radical entertainment studio that was a serious mistake from them.. We Need our prototype series back in line..
lol I love how they say they'll "avoid" microtransactions. as though they're like "oh damn, accidentally hit one of those microtransactions we were avoiding!"
Loot boxes, and call of duty ghosts are 2 things that fit this list perfectly.
Call of Duty what?
Activision: Past is Past
Gameranx: Makes a video about their past.
You know what’s worse then the micro transactions in CTR? How about completely screwing up both Crash and Spyro entirely?
Crash was good haven't played Spyro remastered what is wrong with it
The hell are you talking about? Both of those rereleases were fantastic
I’m not talking about the remasters. I’m talking about the mid 2000s crash and spyro games that made them stop til they needed to remaster the originals to get them back into the limelight.
This makes me glad that I'll always have my PS2. No matter how bad modern games get, the classics will never get old.
they're biggest flop for me was the ps2 version of star trek Voyager elite force, on PC it was good, but the ps2 version was a train wreck in my opinion
Wow, someone actually mentions Elite Force! Nice! While it wasn't as amazing on the PS2 as on the PC but it wasn't bad, it was competent & fairly playable. Definitely not great tho.
@@jkajmo I had the misfortune to play a version that was translated into German, even with the corresponding voice cast, it was terrible to listen to, I rather have the original language of stuff like that
@@ponyperson7513 oh man that sucks! Lol I spent a lot of time playing Japanese imports on my PS1 back in the day so I understand the irks of playing a game in a different language. I would love to see a new Star Trek FPS game with current gen standards. I love the lore of the franchise.
“Do you not have phones”… I loved that. All the BOOS in the world could not make them understand why they were BOO’D
"Number 4 a little red dot"
Made me instantly angry. Might have ruined my day.
DJ Hero 1 & 2 were refreshing takes on the Guitar Hero model with fantastic mixes.
I'm glad you threw Activision under the bus for immortal lmao priceless. Long live Bungie!
Anything after 2013 was a mistake
I feel a little bad for the guy from Activision Blizzard that had to announce Diablo Immortal at Blizzcon 2018. He instantly became a meme. He wasn't even the person who said the infamous "Do you guys not have phones?" It was some other guy that came on stage later. I'm fairly certain he knew people were going to hate this announcement, but he had a job to do.
#8: I want to forget they bought Blizzard and turned it into a soulless money printing machine
Perhaps also mention that they finished off Raven Software independence. That company had a string of good singleplayer fps (e.g. Soldier of Fortune, Quake 4, Wolfenstein 2009 and Singularity) but they are now only contributor to the Call of Duty franchise.
Activision.. We Need a prototype.. From a hardcore prototype fans club!!!
No thanks
It’s a great thing that Activision split from Bungie. As a long time fan of the Destiny series, it great to see that Bungie is making great strides to make Destiny 2 a better game
Shadowkeep was really unimpressive and the fact that they removed the weekly loot box thing from destiny 1 kinda annoyed me, I’m not one to spend my money on loot boxes yet like I want some cool shit, I’d like to see that weekly loot box thing comeback for players like me
Companies like this and EA make me happy that I pirate games now especially after saying no microtransactions and then a month later throw them in that is so deceptive and you will not see one red cent from me.
The worst shit is when they say no micro/macro transactions and then add em later.
I don't have a phone... or rather I don't have a smartphone and I'm living relatively alright with no problems.
in China you wouldn't survive without it. this country is designed for smartphone users. even the elders use them like no problem.
@@teacherfromthejungles6671 That's impressive. Most elders I know here in the US have a hard enough time handling ordinary computers and even some basic technology. I'm one of those people however who prefers to use phones as phones and gaming systems as gaming systems. Even though most technology nowadays double as computers anyway...
Gameranx: there's no games like that anymore
Skate 3: sad skateboard sounds
Look at Diablo Immortal on Google Play lol I think it's abandoned.
Wait... it came out?
@@saviourfade6849 No. Still saying "pre-register". It's been like that for a long time now. So I figured they abandoned it.
@@rhythmmania6407 if they released it it would create more hats towards them so I dont blame them
I love that even after about a year or more andrew has his crate animated as the new guy, I can still hear jake baldino speaking "me falcon and andrew the new guy".
Number 1, the COD franchise after MW3
another thing to remember about guitar hero is that all most all of the games released towards the end (before 2015's half assed moneygrab) were released in the middle of a huge economic recession. this is what ultimately ended the guitar hero era due to poor sales.
Next: things Nintendo wants you to forget.
Except from the Wii u and the miscreation of the playstation there not much I want to forget from them
Speaking about recent events: the whole debacle about banning a Hearthstone player for speaking out in support of Hong Kong was quite a disaster. Besides that, I think the most hilarious thing about Activision is the fact that they release a new Call of Duty every year.
Activision: We rebooth Modern Warfare back to old school with new mechanics/engine and no season pass
Couple of months later
Activision: Next Year Black Ops 5
I bet if was up the the studios they would of dropped the black ops and modern warfare names by now. They're still around for brand recognition and value
In reality, it was to keep their Chinese investors happy because they wanted Diablo Immortal to succeed.
hey.....dj hero (dj hero 2 more specifically) was lit. definitely takes some getting used to and I understand what you're talking about in terms of milking the franchise but dj hero 2 was awesome.... BTW love the channel
2 quotes from Activision boss (at the time at least, don't know if he still is) Bonny Kotick.
"We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."
Taking the fun out of making video games?
Awesome videos! Very informative, but there are times when you sound a bit sloshed
bungie is a great example of how great companies can start going under when greed occurs (in this case it was activision)
Dj hero was fun!!! Especially for someone that was getting into djing. Just playing with the cross fader and timing was worthwhile
Oh Falcon , I love you XD "A red dot, I dunno how many times I can say that"
Falco is youre looking for a Skate game. Session is geting a beta this September
I actually liked DJ Hero. And the way the songs was mixed was really good.
That's the 3rd CEO who said, "There will be no micro transactions at launch"
You need to pay attention to the wording they use. "At launch" in no way means forever. They're still scum bags for doing it, but if we're claiming we gamers have integrity we need to accept that little bit of fault.
Love these videos keep it up!
There's a pretty big disconnect between people complaining about how these publishers handle things and people who are actually willing to boycott their games. Stop handing these people money!
I love how the ad at the beginning is an activision game XD
9:16 "Bungie is a phenomenal developer"
*Shows Master Chief from Halo 4*
Hold every company accountable. Good job
Caddicarus had a rant about the Nitro Fueled microtrans thing, he's both pissed and heartbroken that Activison had the nerve to put microtransactions on a 20+ year old racing game
DJ hero 1 & 2 were amazing
And the G live controller buttons, and strumming bar was so easy to break, and stick.
The employee who said that about MTX in Crash wasn’t fired. They were given a promotion for lying as Activision coached.
this series too good keep it up!
Funny thing about Guitar Hero. I found playing a real guitar easier than playing the controller. Probably because I'd been playing guitar for years when I first discovered the game.
I eventually got the hang of it, but it was rough at first.
And I really miss playing COD Black Ops and COD Black Ops 2. Those were really good COD games.
Black Ops 4 without campaign/story was a huge mistake.
