    When I was a kid, this one antique store in town had a black and white hearse as their mascot. Usually it was parked in front of the store but sometimes we'd see the 'skunk mobile', as it came to be called, driving around picking up inventory for the store. Great advertisement for the store. I love antiques because the craftsmanship of older furniture and other things from that era were so unique and beautiful. I like to troll local antique and thrift stores, estate sales and even Craig's list and eBay and Etsy. I only use antique dishes to eat on. Vintage screwback earrings are my weakness. I've never seen a scrapyard with trees growing out of the inventory. Lol. Love your channel. Lots of interesting finds.

    Had seen a 1950s Merc 190 based ambulance when I was five, that was 50 years ago. Was fascinated by its siren. But it had a flat roof. Years later saw a 1980s Merc ambulance in Delhi. A group of these were imported by the Indian Red Cross and later sold to a private ambulance operator. One came up for sale about 5 years ago.

    • @gosportjamie
      @gosportjamie 6 лет назад

      +Richard Cline I would imagine that one will still be restored, despite its very rough condition. The extended-wheelbase Binz ambulances are incredibly rare, most Fintail ambulances, like the one shown in the still from the James Bond film, were based on the standard wheelbase. The extended vehicles were massively more expensive as they weren't so much a conversion on the existing car as a complete structural rebuild, and these were largely hand-built. Unlike limousine conversions which are pretty common on all sorts of vehicles in the US, the Binz had to be totally re-engineered to make it strong enough to support the extra weight of all the extra bodywork, the patient/s and the necessary life-saving equipment and, unlike a lot of limousine conversions, the Fintail was a monocoque/unibody vehicle with no separate chassis/frame so it all had to be self-supporting and it had to at least meet all the requirements for road cars in Germany at the time, and preferably exceed them as was Mercedes-Benz's practice at the time. Production figures for the Binz ambulance are uncertain as they often get mixed up with the standard wheelbase vehicles but the best sources largely agree that production of the long wheelbase vehicles probably did not exceed 100 vehicles, most of which went to ambulance services in West German cities. Survivors are few as they were often stripped for their mechanical parts after being retired to provide replacements for civilian vehicles, as the ambulances generally had the largest engines available such as the fuel-injected 2.2 litre 6-cylinder used in the 220SE and there is evidence that some were equipped with the 3.0 litre unit used in bigger Mercedes-Benz products including the famous 300SL Gullwing sports car...

    Alex, you are friends with one of the finest body men in the world. That alone is a big statement. This man has restored cars that couldn't be done and its because of his love of history. He spliced a Dodge Fury with a Plymouth four door because they share the same floor ban and then when he got back to the fin area, he spliced the splice with another (I honestly don't remember) so that the trunk lid... floor, sides, and anything that pertains to the car. The Dodge Fury with all the stainless steel sweeps under the car near the tires is better than new' He lives near you..... Coldwarmotors is like having Chip Foose do the work. Sure slower cause it is just a one man with Francine, his Poodle, You just got to talk to the man and he shares similar passions you and him. I'm on serious meds for end of life and this would warm my heart

    ❤️❤️❤️Wow! A blast from the past video. I thought I had gone through and watched most of your vid’s previous to the Potter’s house series when I found you. I was wrong! I’m assuming this is THE famous ambulance we know and love . No idea how much work you had put into it. Can you remember if you found a tick on you? I know you and Melissa said you don’t have them where you live but you & Stephen found out the hard way that you do have mean wasps on your new property. It would be dreamy if our family property didn’t have ticks or wasps! 80% woods in 278 acres…..lets just say I’ve lost count of how many ticks I have encountered. We go through a lot of wasp / hornet killer every year as apparently our Missouri hot and humid summers make them cranky & just plain mean.
