  • @martinfalk8597

Sadly, this decision can only be considered as the final step in a trend that has steadily led to this band's decline. It started with KK Downing leaving the band 2011 and now we're here. It has gone to a point where I'm questioning how much I really can stand behind the band anymore.
A couple of weeks ago, Judas Priest publiced a photo from the 80s on their Facebook page, showing Ian Hill, Glen Tipton & Rob Halford in the band's heyday. It wasn't a horrible photo by any means. The horrible thing was that they intentially left out KK Downing & Dave Holland, who both appears in the original photo. I don't mind them leaving out Dave Holland considering his past, but leaving out KK Downing was disrespectful and childish. It seems to me that the band want to erase KK's involvement and history with the band, to the point where they intentially take measures to make it happen. When Glenn, Ian, Rob & Scott talk about KK they don't call him KK or Ken but "a former guitarist", indicating that his part in the band's success and history is minimalstic and not as important as many claims it to be. Anyone who likes metal knows how essential KK is/was to the Priest sound, not alone but in interplay with Glenn Tipton, and that the band would have been jack s**t without him. He was one of the band's founding members, he was there before Glenn & Rob, and his importance for the band is bigger than Ian Hill's and Ritchie Faulkner's will ever be. It makes me sad to see Judas Priest acting like 5 year-old kids in the KK dilemma, and that they want to erase him from the band at all costs. That's not how you treat a band legend that has been fundamental for the success of the band. I don't ask for KK to return to the band (that's impossible at this point considering all the stupid s**t KK has said about the band in recent years), but I at least want Judas Priest to acknowledge him and his history with the band and give credit where it's due.
The fact that they rather play with one guitarist, thus throwing all their musical trademarks through the window, than ask KK to play with them again is a clear indicatior of how bad the blood is. I'm not behind that decision at all. Truth be told, I have never been a fan of Ritchie Faulkner. Great guitar player, but I simply don't want him in Judas Priest. When you have two guitarists that has played together for 40 years, and together have shaped the forms of heavy metal, you can't throw in a new guy and pretend that nothing has changed. Maiden were able to to it when they brought in Janick Gers, because Adrian Smith had only played in the band for less than 10 years, but for Priest it was an impossible task. The void of KK Downing can never be filled IMO, and as long as the band continue like they do now, KK's abscence will continue to shape my experience of them. I will continue to watch them live and I will listen to their new albums, because I'm a fan after all, but Judas Priest without KK Downing will never sound "complete" and "pure" to me. Like I said, I'm not asking for KK to rejoin the band at this point, but when push comes to shove, that's what I have wanted ever since he first left.

There's been a few things as of late in the Judas Priest camp that have concerned me in regards to their live performances. It's clear that Rob is now using backing tracks to help bolster his vocal performance (go watch any live recordings from the 2021 shows, especially those of Painkiller and Touch of Evil), and without a second guitar, I'm assuming the band will have to use more backing tracks to compensate for a missing member.
Priest is right up there in terms of my favourite metal acts, but honestly, if they start becoming an over produced almost pop like live act with an over use of dubbed tracks, etc. I can no longer justify the decent amount of money I'd need to spend to see this band live. A)put KK back in opposite Richie(the nobrainer of all nobrainers)

Sneap performed...admirably, but I'm actually interested in seeing Priest bring it in 2022 as a 4-spot.
Pete - not a fair comparison with Lizzy or Maiden. Those two bands' song repertoire is much more heavily steeped in the whole twin guitar harmony thing than Priest ever was. Priest has always had the twin guitars, but it was more of a call & response thing than a harmony context.

I saw Judas Priest at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI last September and the show was phenomenal! This was my fourth or fifth time seeing the band, while my buddy who came with hadn't ever seen them, so seeing the Sneap/Faulkner guitar duo was not a change to him (at least live). While the chemistry/dynamics of the Tipton/Downing duo were iconic, I thought the new line-up absolutely did justice to the Priest catalog, and I told my friend that even without KK and Glenn, it was still a proper Judas Priest show in all its power and glory.
I'm with you regarding Richie in that he's a great guitarist. He handled 80-90% of the leads (both KK and Glenn solos) and he's excellent at them. That said, I cannot FATHOM the Priest as a single guitar band. Are they going to use tracks, as you suggested? Will there be an unseen rhythm guitarist behind the curtain like many other metal bands use (Sabbath used Adam Wakeman for keys and rhythm guitar and it worked very well on their last tours), which would at least be a human being playing live? How the hell do they plan to adequately fill that sound?!
As far as bringing KK Downing back - and this may be unpopular with my fellow fans - I'm actually with Judas Priest for not inviting his return. He wrote a tell-all book and has said a fair amount of negative things over the years, continuing to this day when he released his own "Priest" record with Tim Owens. He planned on leaving the band after the Painkiller tour and had even penned a letter saying so, but Halford beat him to it. KK was willing to break up the group 30 years ago, and bitched publicly and privately ever since Halford came back. I can see why they believe he'd be more trouble than it's worth.
To my mind, there would be a number of guitarists who could step in and fill the vacant spot while maintaining the Priest sound. Mike Chlasciak and Roy Z. (and Patrick Lachman before him) from the Halford band honestly did a better job recreating many Priest songs on stage than Tipton/Downing did in the 90s/early-2000s when they altered keys for Ripper to sing in. I'm sure there are numerous others who could handle at least the rhythm parts while Richie handles the solos.

However that being said they saw sense and soon went back to the twin guitars; and although Priest were at the start a 4 piece with just KK before getting Glenn in for Rocka Rolla, for them to even contemplate dropping to just the one guitarist now, just beggars belief.

    Let's clear up some facts
Ian Hill is the only current member who was in Judas Priest 50 years ago.
Judas Priest are KK, Glenn and Rob, the sum of the parts if you will.
RF is a Guitar Hero, literally, his talent does not include writing melody or lead solos, he was a better fit for his favourite metal band IM.
JP has not written a song since Painkiller that makes me glad Rob came back and when KK left, they have only written stuff that makes me wish they'd stopped long since.
The only selfish reason I was pleased Rob came back was so my son could see one of the greatest metal bands of all time.
I have no right to expect them to have quit at the top, but they did once ask 'why do you have to die to be a hero'... well they have answered that question loud and clear by tarnishing the brand of a band (catchy) I was once so proud to support and be fanatical about.

Will always be known as twin guitar band. I am also a bit concerned with Ritchie touring again so soon after his health issues, which makes this decision even stranger. Much as i love Priest, Halford is struggling with his voice as well and would no longer pay to see them. Classy response from Andy Sneap

I love Judas Priest. They're my favorite band, along with Dio. They're the band that got me into Metal. I've always defended them, but I can't this time! They're a two guitar band. It can be argued they helped pioneer that format. They need another guitarist! Getting a guy from a tribute or cover band would be fine with me. I also like some of the names Pete threw out. Wolf Hoffmann. Gus G. George Lynch. Chris Caffery. All great! The first names that came to MY mind were John Sykes, Warren DeMartini, Jake E. Lee, and Doug Aldrich (if they could get him away from Dead Daisies, of course). As long as the person is good, I think the fans will accept it. I know I will. I was an Andy Sneap fan going back to his work in Sabbat, so I never had a problem with him.
Hopefully, the band takes our criticism to heart! Who knows? Maybe this is all a publicity stunt to drum up press and announce somebody like George Lynch or even get KK back! I know, not likely. But stranger things have happened in the Metal world before. Regardless, they need that second player!
PS I just had to add that my comments are NOT meant to be taken as an insult to Richie Faulkner, as he is a great player and has done some awesome work with the band.

Nowhere near a fan of the band of the caliber of most SoT commenters, co-captains, and you, too, Pete. Like those fans, cannot comprehend what the band must be thinking - particularly after having sold so many tickets for the coming shows. As one of my grandfather's used to say: "You gotta be sure not to shit where you eat." The band has now laid out the big turd, so to speak. All that aside, hoping that you will go to the concert - regardless of the configuation of the group - and then have a show expressing your thoughts and review of the concert. Your rant is spot on and Chris Alo was on a roll on last night's Hudson Valley Squares episode regarding this very topic. Those watching this who may not regularly watch those episodes should be SURE to hear Chris' quite compelling rant/discussion of the topic. Thanks for venting!

I agree with you, Pete, that this is not a good decision. I have tickets for that show also, which I'll be taking my son to see. As good as Andy apparently has been, his real job is as a record producer, not as a touring musician. It's a totally different lifestyle, and I imagine he's had to turn down a lot of work due to his commitments playing with Priest, and had he said that as an explanation, I would have said, OK, that's fine. I understand. Why not hire another guy who can play the music and do the live shows, and just keep the band as a four piece in the recording studio? I think you may see them change their minds on this.

It's so unfortunate. The really sad thing is that they WILL NOT go back to K. K.! They should at this point if this is what they are going to do, but there is too much bad blood. I hate to say it, but I think it's time for the mighty Priest to retire.
