Loved the topic. It should get a lot of views. Similarly I have been thinking about this topic that would make a great Hudson Valley Squares show..."The bands that did not reach their potential because of their vocal performances" . I think there are really big bands that would have sounded so much better if they just had god vocalists, like GnR, Megadeth, Metallica (probably James would agree but could not get John Bush), from 90s bands Smashing Pumpkins etc.

Pete’s comment implying that Nirvana is responsible for the disappearance of solos from rock music really jumped out at me. I’d always blamed that on punk. I don’t hate punk at all as music - I think it can be energizing and compelling and even fun - but I’ve always thought that punk made soloing uncool, and I’ve hated it for that. When people say “old music was better”, I think that’s a big thing they’re wanting in contemporary rock and not getting - an instrumentalist stepping up and making a statement like a singer does. It shifts the world under my feet a little to think that it might be Nirvana’s fault instead.
Actually, lots of punk has solos. I never thought of it as "music without solos" at all, really. Of course, they were never virtuoso, shredding minute long ones but they're there.
Yep, saw The Damned last year, and Captain Sensible was shredding like a maniac throughout the whole show. His playing is very Hendrix inspired, I was really impressed. The band were killer as well, it was one of the most exciting, high energy shows I'd seen in years.

The only band that I followed in the 90s - and they're technically an 80s band - was Social Distortion, who nobody ever talks about. Saw them live seven times. And the first Mike Ness solo album was fantastic. So having to endure Green Day's endless popularity has been a bitter pill. And I appreciate all the Nirvana hate - Smells Like Teen Armpit was the day rock died. "Fake heaviness" describes all grunge. A decade of frauds whining about invented despair.
Guns N Roses, Poison, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Blink 182 I could go on for a while including a lot that were mentioned! Luis was fantastic, I hope he comes back for more guest appearances here!
In a fair and sane world, van der Graff generator’s a plague of lighthouse keepers would be the most beloved, appreciated, admired and studied popular music song of the late 20th century

I remember watching Elliot doing those interviews. I checked out that music that was being discussed. Yeah that wasn’t my cup of tea. To be honest I feel like his parents were more of the masterminds behind him interviews bands as a kid. Sure he probably likes those bands but if he’s making more acoustic friendly he probably isn’t a total die hard fan of the bands he got to interview. I’m sure he’s a really nice person though.
Bless you Luis. I hate reggaeton too. It is the soundtrack for stoplights on the Texas coast, and if my pain has to be sacrificed for someone's pleasure....sorry Universe. That's not right.

Thank you for mentioning Peatl Jam. I hated their music when they 1st came out and I still do. Their noise doesn't move me at all. Eddie Vedder is the ultimate in pretentiousness. "We're for the common man". BULLSHIT I agree with your other choices too
While I've liked certain songs by some of the bands mentioned tonight, the bottom line for me is: what artists mentioned tonight have I actually purchased music from? The answer is Motley Crue (Shout At The Devil and Theater of Pain,) Nirvana (Nevermind,) Alice In Chains (Dirt,) and Pearl Jam (Ten.) That's it.
Songs irritate me more than artists do. My #1 most hated song is the "Don't give me no lines and keep your hands to yourself" by the Georgia Satellites.
I DESPISE Green Day with every ounce of my being. Total corporate rock garbage and a phony outrage factory to boot. If I never heard them again it would be too soon! Motley Crue are a close second!
Just listening now, so sorry I'm late, putting my five picks in before listening to everybody's full selections. Also, I'm trying to stick to rock bands, as picking pop, rap, country, etc bands would take forever. 1 LIMP BIZKIT 2 BLINK 182 3 POISON 4 SLIPKNOT 5 NIRVANA Probably all too obvious, but I'm hard to displease...

I love watching Pete.
I love watching Pete & Martin
I really love the UK Connection
First time watching Hudson Valley Squares and now, for fook sake, I love this too
The only band that I followed in the 90s - and they're technically an 80s band - was Social Distortion, who nobody ever talks about.
Yeah Social D is damn good
Social D is good, and great guitar solos. I don't know why people say Punk has no solos, most Punk bands have solos.
Guns N Roses, Poison, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Blink 182
I could go on for a while including a lot that were mentioned! Luis was fantastic, I hope he comes back for more guest appearances here!
Agree with u
Yes, Jon Mellencamp blows but you need to add Huey Lewis and Eddie Money which equally SUCK!
In a fair and sane world, van der Graff generator’s a plague of lighthouse keepers would be the most beloved, appreciated, admired and studied popular music song of the late 20th century
For me it's any number of the alternative/punk/pop-punk/skate punk bands I was surrounded with by friends growing up in the 90s. It's all INSUFFERABLE
The worst offenders...
-Blink-182
-My Chemical Romance
-Good Charlotte
-Rise Against
-Sum 41
Yikes. "has to be sacrificed" is supposed to be "is the sacrifice". Folks, check your posts when COVID shows it's ugly head.
"He used to be a fat bastard, now he's half of one". Some absolute gold in this episode.
Saxon’s most current album is great.
Artists and bands that annoy me, if i rattled them all off my list, I would still be here tomorrow 😅 There's so many but if I narrowed it down, my list would look something like this
1. Justin Bieber
2. Taylor Swift
3. Coldplay
4. Ed Sheeran
5. Guns 'N' Roses
I hear a ‘97 Honda coming down the street 😂😂😂
Great episode.
1. Nirvana
2. The Black Crowes
2. Pearl Jam
4. Limp Biscuit
5. Coldplay
Thank you for mentioning Peatl Jam. I hated their music when they 1st came out and I still do. Their noise doesn't move me at all. Eddie Vedder is the ultimate in pretentiousness. "We're for the common man". BULLSHIT
I agree with your other choices too
Black Crowes are perfect
@@onlysleeping8934 Most overrated grunge band EVER!
Coldplay would be my number one. Can’t listen to them.
I remember the Wall. Changed their name to FYE to punt on their supposed "Lifetime Music Guarantee"
U2 was the first band that i thought of. Great choice Luis
Horrible since Joshua Tree, otherwise no issues.
@@seekah1 Pretty much. I think they have a few good songs here and there since then but overall horrible.
Why doesn't it surprise me that they never had another hit after that? Damn, that song SUCKS!
No huggy, no kissy!
I expected Luis to list Jon Anderson… but he did mention Olias Of Sunhillow in a negative connotation, so I’m not too disappointed!
I DESPISE Green Day with every ounce of my being. Total corporate rock garbage and a phony outrage factory to boot. If I never heard them again it would be too soon! Motley Crue are a close second!
Agree and agree.
They got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because of their politics. It certainly wasn't because of their music...
Just listening now, so sorry I'm late, putting my five picks in before listening to everybody's full selections. Also, I'm trying to stick to rock bands, as picking pop, rap, country, etc bands would take forever.
1 LIMP BIZKIT
2 BLINK 182
3 POISON
4 SLIPKNOT
5 NIRVANA
Probably all too obvious, but I'm hard to displease...
My 5 bands/ artists I just get annoyed
1. Falling in Reverse
2. Slipknot
3. Taylor Swift
4. Staind
5. Bon Jovi
