Just wanna say a word of encouragement man. I know this is your hobby and probably one of diminishing returns at that, but I really enjoy your videos and hope you continue to make them.
Will you make a video on whether the Hussar upgrade is worth it? 8 cavalier worth of gold for just a 12% increase in power sounds like it's going to take a while to pay off - at least with the maths from the Paladin Upgrade 2 video.
The major difference is that usually archers can run away from skirmishers and avoid them, but genitours can catch them easily, so they are way more lethal for archers
not op. you have enough time to pump out pikes to stop them. but it is a strong bonus that you will almost never get to use unless you & a friend pick Berber & Saracen together.
Cameron Jones Now, if you playing Turks, and have a Saracens and a Berbers allies, you truly have one of the most powerful units in the game, and it does not even cost gold.
as a trash unit they are strong, but they are still trash. and are by no mean one of the most powerful units in the game. those civs you listed all lack halbs thus cavalry can crush them in the trash wars.
skirmishers' javelins are very very weak in power (imagine throwing a stick out) and the elephant probably receives little if not zero damage whatsoever.
Pretty accurate actually. I've seen video of elephants being hunted with thrown spears and it was ridiculous how many it took to actually cause it to collapse.
As you showed in the video on the screen but didnt mention, Vietnamesse Genitour are also affected by the HP bonus, which makes them the 2nd best Genitours after the Turks one, difference is only 6 HP :-).
Mongols and Huns, yes, especially for the mid-game, where their Genitours become more serviceable with faster firing and reduced cost respectively. Late game, they get overtaken, but that's not really an issue given that the civs are fairly strong early and mid-game anyway. Aztecs, I respectfully disagree. As soon as anything more threatening than a small group of Pikemen appears, they're toast, since they don't have Bloodlines, AND they have to pay for Atlatl. They're an alright 'civ' early in the game and granted, this opens up a cav archer strategy for them, but I doubt it gives them a niche beyond a trivial role.
I remember when I was a kid I saw a "genitour" unit in the editor but it was a militia with range. At first I thought that was just a joke unit but boy I'm happy it wasn't
As i commented a few minutes ago, it is possible the genitour (or more correctly, ginete, or jinete) would be the unique spanish unit, and the militia was just a stand-in model until it was finished. However is possible Ensemble felt it wasn't interesting enough, or just decided it would not fit the mesoamerican parts. So it was replaced by the conquistador. Ironically, ginetes were fast attack mounted skirmishers, from the iberian peninsula, created at the time to fight the moorish heavy cavalry. So the ingame berbers have control of the units that were supposed to fight them off on the Iberian Peninsula xD
Nice video. For the Berbers, Genitours fit in nicely with the Berber cavalry army and don't lag behind like Skirmishers do.They are suitable for other cavalry civilizations and especially for Turks. Two things you missed. 1.Accuracy:Both Genitours and Elite Genitour have 90% accuracy(same as Elite Skirmisher). 2.Magyar unique tech Recurve Bow does give Genitour +1 range.
i havent played any AoE game for at least 10 years, but still i love to see you brake down the game mechanics and do some serious number crunching. keep up the good work SotL!
There is a mistake at 2:07 in the cost of Genitours in the video: they actually have same wood cost, 2x the food cost of skirms (35W 50F). You probably switched over the two resources.
Also, it might be worth mentioning that Elite Genitours deal 2 damage to FU Hussar (6 armor), whereas Elite Skirms only deal 1. So in mass groups, they perform a lot better vs Hussars.
Perfect synergy with the Mongols: they can work together with the generalist Mangudai and be the anti-archer support, thanks to their mobility they can keep up and both can raid around til their heart's content. For that, I'd imagine Turks, Berbers and Mongols as a trio to be extremely effective.
Awesome as usual, Spirit of the Law :) To add a bit to the discussion; in some way the Genitours blends nicely with other Middle Eastern civs in the game; Byzantines, Turks, Persians and Saracens (especially Turks and Saracens) which is in someway a nice nod to geography and history
It might take 500 hussars to pay off, but one won fight thanks to stronger units might win you the game and that's a payoff that's good enough for me, Or even being able to potentially win a fight and ruin the enemy's trade before they can respond again. So economical payoff isn't necessairly everything
The reason the mistake happened with skirmisher bonuses vs. cavalry archers is because "archer" and "cavalry archer" are their own armor classes with different bonuses applied. However, all units with cavalry archer armor class also have the archer and cavalry armor classes. It's basically there so that units can deal additional bonuses to them without dealing bonus damage to all mounted units (skirmishers deal more bonus damage to cavalry archer units than to regular archer units, but no bonuses to non-archer cavalry), or bonuses specifically to them (camel archers deal bonus damage to cav archer units, but not normal archer units or cavalry). It's actually +0/+2/+3 for the skirmisher line, but since that stacks with their normal archer bonus, it totals out to +3/+5/+8. Genitours get a reduction of 1 point to anti-cavalry archer bonuses similar to cataphracts and their reduced bonus damage to anti-cavalry units, so a skirmisher deals less bonus damage to them than to a normal cavalry archer.
Just a an interesting tidbit. Genitour is the french word for jinete. And, it was a light skirmisher cavalry used by the iberian kingdoms (Leon, Aragon, Portugal, Navarra...) against the moorish heavy cavalry. Their combat style was pelt the enemies with javelins and arrows to weaken or neutralize the oposition, retreat, then repeat. They were however unprepared for melee. The horse would have no barding, to move as quick as possible, and the rider would usually bare only a shield, some chainmail vest if lucky, and would fight at melee with sword or short spear. The berbers have as unique shareable unit... The cavalry that was used against them for centuries. Also, considering there was a genitour data on The Conquerors (appears on the spanish campaign but uses a milita model and throws ballista shots when swings, if i recall), some people considered the jinete would actually be the unique unit for the spanish, but was cut down and replaced by the conquistador, for the sake of the mesoamerican storyline. Also, there was a mod that included the portuguese. It included an upgrade for hand canoneers (the arquebusier), a mercenary house that used unique unit models and associated them to famous kinds of warriors (like the heavy pikeman, was a swiss halberdier, or a flemish pikeman if i recall). And the mod's namesake unique unit was the jinete. It costed a modest cold sum though, but was a mounted skirmisher (like it is always depicted) that specialized in fightinging archers. I do admit, was kinda hoping the jinete would be the unique for Portugal when the expansion was released. Would make more historical sense. But meh, is already a few years late.
Great vid. Thanks. FYI, a mistake you have been making: The Briton's Yeoman tech gives Genitours and Skirmishers +1 Range (you missed that in your Skirmishers video as well). However, the Brits normal +1 Range bonus per age (starting in Castle Age) is restricted to foot archers.
The 1 more attack is very important as well. Skirmishers end up being less effective against a lot of units because their attack just isn't high enough to get through armor. Fully Upgraded Champions take 2 damage from fully upgraded skirmishers (depending on Imperial Skirm + Aztecs, etc.) while they would take 3 from Genitours, that's 50% more damage. With low base attack units like the skirm and Genitour, 1 more damage is pretty significant.
I have to say after watching several videos the analysis, and quantifiable numbers that Spirit of the Law has by far the best in-depth videos. Good insight to a casual like me.
One aditional point about the comparison between genitour and imperial skirmishers is the upgrade cost. The skirmisher is two upgrades to get to the imperial one, and the elite genitour upgrade don't cost any gold.
Saracens are awesome! Hey Spirit, think you can suggest saracens+berbers+spanish? Or maybe do a video on camels? Or how to be cost and population efficient as saracens?
Haha I love how you constantly made fun of the Saracen team bonus in your earlier videos, but after the Mayans stole obsidian from the Aztecs the bonus comes up as useful. I can now live my dream of cost-effectively throwing spears at a stone building.
Is there a complete collection game for Age of Empires 2? How do you get all the expansions and bonus civs all together? Do u have to buy all the expansions separately or is there an easier way?
One question I've often wondered on seeing pro players play is why so many people seem to transition into farms while there's still plenty of free food (herd animals, nearby hunting, berries, etc.) close by? Sometimes they completely skip some of these sources, although more often they build some farms while still having a couple of villagers gathering from the berries, etc. Wouldn't it be better to fully use up those resources first and then make farms? Especially since they're both faster food sources than farms and unlikely to be available to you once war has commenced. Maybe a subject for a future video? And thanks for all your work, dude. Your videos rock! :)
I think one point you should point out is that Genitours can easily kill infantry by hit&run tactics, making them really useful. You can have an unit that can be used as a Cavalry archer costing no gold. Of course not that strong but similar use. Against pike line, even though they have no bonus, they can hit and run, making them even better. If you can micro them, they are way over regular skirms. Withput micro, go for skirms.
The genitour is the cavalry skirmisher. They cost no gold and are good at taking damage from the enemy. Unfortunately I don't see the research elite genitour tech available to me and can only use regular genitour in battle. I don't know why the tech does not appear in archery range at all in the imperial age.
In early castle age: If I go Genitours I don't have to research Elite Skirmisher, which is 300Wood 450Gold. Thats a huge upgrade, if I need to defend quickly from archers. Especially if I already did bloodlines for scouts or kgts.
Many civilizations did not have this unit as a result of game dynamics, but historically, Arabs, Turks, Spanish had this unit. There are tournaments still taste the festival in Turkey. It is organized in the city of Erzurum. Its Turkish name is "Cirit".
This video is old. Genitour has 4 base pierce armor and cost has been changed to 50F and 35W. I think it's an interesting unit that can be useful in some situations.
Hey! If you lack ideas or something of the sort, maybe you could make commentaries on AoE 2 games? Or upload some of your games? Or maybe have occasional games with fans that you upload? Could be fun :3
Having that one extra attack means they do twice as much damage to their trash counter, the hussar. Although it does open them up to being vulnerable to halbs...
+Spirit of the Law You forgot the Britons get 1 extra range (Yeomen) and archery ranges work 20% faster and all blacksmith techs and bloodlines. Why did you not include them in the civ differences I'm just wondering?
Genitours get the Cav-Archer Boni from Tartars (+2 LOS, +1 P-Armor) and dont get the Skirm Boni from Lithuanians (+10% move-Speed, +1 P-Armor) in AOE2:DE. OH! And they still get the (changed) Saracene awesomeness (nerf-plz).
Spirit I beg you, make overviews for the African Kingdoms and Rise of the Rajas civs please! I enjoyed your civ overviews so much I watched them multiple times and they taught me so much about the game and in general I love your vids as much as I love this game so always keep up working man💪
May sound like a silly question but how does it do as a raiding unit? Especially cost efficiency wise. Since obviously the extra pierce armour is going to be of help against ranged defences while still keeping the advantage of outrunning most melee units chasing them down. I mean calvary archers aren't example cheap and taking Genitours over calvary archers to raid saves gold in the long-run... would that be worth it?
a video, just for fun, to see how many units a single car can kill, and what units are best against one, which one's the worst etc.. what elevation and cliffs apply to them, what's their accuracy, how to "defend against them" that sort of stuff. it'd be cool to see. Thanks.
I can’t quite tell if Law was joking with that Saracen bonus part, since he likes to tib the Saracen team bonus, but it actually makes some sense to say that killing a castle with trash is cost effective.
I took interest in the fact you didn't count in the elite skirmisher upgrade in the equal resources count, that should actually add 3-4 more genitours? Please give me your opinion spirit. /Old Papa Moose
Ironically genitours are Spanish units and were actually employed against the Moors (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinete); it would actually be interesting to briefly situate the unit in a historical context:)
I have the original version (AoK and AoC, both first editions) and in scenario editor Genitours are portrayed as militia men, but with cavalry like circle (or like a king) and with the javelin throw effect.
Do Japanese samurais deal bonus damage to genitours? On a similar note, do samurais deal bonus damage to other cub specific but shared units like condotierros or imp skirms? Thx in advance.
Just wanna say a word of encouragement man. I know this is your hobby and probably one of diminishing returns at that, but I really enjoy your videos and hope you continue to make them.

11:13 Not anymore bad luck for Byzantines, with the April 2023 patch 😉.

Great vid. Thanks. FYI, a mistake you have been making: The Briton's Yeoman tech gives Genitours and Skirmishers +1 Range (you missed that in your Skirmishers video as well). However, the Brits normal +1 Range bonus per age (starting in Castle Age) is restricted to foot archers.

Spirit of the Law vs. pannenkoek2012 in an Epic Rap Battle
"Can you even align your QPU?"
"No but I have great onagers!"
0:21 Can't trample all over history when they've got no trample damage
Hey Spirit, do you have twitch ?
If not I think you are missing out on something!
Can´t break the law, if you are the law! ;)
I just realized that the Saracens have a cav archer bonus O.o mind-blowing
finally a new upload
I don't even play this game why am I watching this?
MavisLenya DUDE, right!? I've been subbed for months and I can't stop watching. I don't even like RTSes. This is what makes RUclips awesome
a video, just for fun, to see how many units a single car can kill, and what units are best against one, which one's the worst etc.. what elevation and cliffs apply to them, what's their accuracy, how to "defend against them" that sort of stuff.
it'd be cool to see. Thanks.
Hey Spirit, any chance of an Ethiopians overview soon? Free Pike/Halbs upgrades make me a happy trasher.
Are Genitours affected by Britons faster archery range bonus?
There's no reason why it shouldn't.
I think that' bonus is only for foot archers, isn't it?
its made in the archery range, so yes.
Cool, it should've been listed as an advantage in the video.
since when genitours have been foot archers?
I can’t quite tell if Law was joking with that Saracen bonus part, since he likes to tib the Saracen team bonus, but it actually makes some sense to say that killing a castle with trash is cost effective.
I took interest in the fact you didn't count in the elite skirmisher upgrade in the equal resources count, that should actually add 3-4 more genitours? Please give me your opinion spirit.
/Old Papa Moose
what in early castle if you factor in the elite skirm upgrade? :)
love your vids
For some reason the villager running to the car in a hail of bullets and instagibbing it, synced to the music, just cracks me up :D
Ironically genitours are Spanish units and were actually employed against the Moors (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinete); it would actually be interesting to briefly situate the unit in a historical context:)
Very informative, as always.
I'm a simple man. I see a Spirit of the Law video. I watch it. I like it. I carry on.
Bro your videos are the greatest
I have the original version (AoK and AoC, both first editions) and in scenario editor Genitours are portrayed as militia men, but with cavalry like circle (or like a king) and with the javelin throw effect.
Do Japanese samurais deal bonus damage to genitours? On a similar note, do samurais deal bonus damage to other cub specific but shared units like condotierros or imp skirms? Thx in advance.
Can't wait for AE1 content! HYPE!
