    Here's a tip from a lamer in AoE II. If you see on Nomad or Black Forest that your opponent has a "sounder" of Boar nearby and you don't want him having those, you CAN Kill all the Boar with just ONE Villager. Easy: Go to the Group of Boar, wall your villager completely with 4 Palisades right in the middle of the "sounder", and then start attacking the Boars. The Boar won't be able to get to your villager, they'll stay stuck on the Palisade until you kill them, you can repeat to kill many boars without losing a single HP on that lone laming villager. At 5:51, you can see a PERFECT Place you can try this. Killing those 5 Boar with a Single Villager is amazing, you'd be denying your opponent over 1,500 free food.

    • @tomscorpion6288
      @tomscorpion6288 9 лет назад +12

      +A. Anderson Well if they scout properly they will find the rotting boars and take at least some of their food. You would need to kill them with archer, for example, to destroy the food rightaway.

    • @a.anderson2072
      @a.anderson2072 9 лет назад +50

      +Tom Scorpion Yes, but that means they'll waste a ton of villager time walking to the boars, as building a mill will no longer work. And, 5 rotting boars will give pretty much no food. If they try to panic salvage food, they'll at best only get 200 food out of 5 boars. With a lot of walking time. Still a win-win for you. You can't really kill them with archers because, by the time you get to the Feudal Age, get the Archery Range and send the Archer over, the enemy will have most likely already walled, or already milled and taken the boars.

    • @gergelynagyfugedi6864
      @gergelynagyfugedi6864 9 лет назад +1

      +A. Anderson Em.. with that time, especially black forest, instead of walleng your villager you could wall the way, so the enemy do not have access to the boars. Then you can walk with your own villagers, build a mill and get all the 5 boars. Walling in your vill is 4 walls, some + walls, and you walled yourself in black forest.

    • @a.anderson2072
      @a.anderson2072 9 лет назад +22

      +Gergely Nagyfugedi Not really. If the Sounder of Boar is in the enemy area, then walling the sounder off will take way too much wood and time as it'd require you to wall a portion of the enemy area. Walling the forest corridor won't work. The idea of laming is that it needs to be quick and effective. You can kill all the boar, keep the villager inside, and then build Forward buildings in Feudal Age to do a rare BF Flush if desired.

    The best way to start the Attila the Hun campaign is to lure the iron boar so it attacks Bleda, and then just run all the way out, past the huns, and by the river. In this scenario Bleda dies, the hunters come out, the huns accuse them of treason, and then they all, including the archers, come to your side with no blood shed. The key is to make sure that you're not in line of sight to the archers or they will attack. Plus, in this scenario, you can give Attila a head start exploring the map and grabbing those extra villagers and horses.

    Villagers only seem to go rogue when you accidentally target it towards a sheep near your town center. Since you change the villagers task to shepherd it goes into defense mode. You could call it a glitch because it's not consistent across other game play. I believe a lumber jack or a miner would share those same characteristics. If you accidentally clicked a gold pile while running from a boar the villager would attack when hit, rather than running, as a boar hunter would. Changing the villagers task actually changes it's object inheritance in ways that wouldn't be expected. You might want to test this for one of your videos?

    Very informative and interesting video.
    I don't want to go too far off on a tangent about the campaign but regarding the first scenario for the Huns there is an easy and funny way to abuse the triggers for extra resources that I've found. You start by running away from Bleda when he's at low HP from fighting the boar just like Spirit demonstrated in order to trigger the archers to come out, by that time Bleda should have been killed by the boar and all of his units (including the archers) will be transferred to your control. When you go west to the settlement it will finish the "running away" trigger giving you extra villagers and a large boost of resources.

    If you're Chinese, get Loom right away. Chinese start with +3 villagers, but minus 200 food (it was 150 before, but they changed it in HD). So basically, no food to begin with. Research loom while the villagers are getting food, and by the time it's done you'll probably be close to getting your first 50 food.

    I found a nice way to prevent villagers from dying taking a boar 1v1: instead of setting the gather point on the boar itself from the TC, set it to two tiles away. Then, when you press the idle hotkey a few seconds later, you can lure it back with your full attention.

  • @nyamtserenbatdolgor4222

    For the 1st Atilla the Hun campaign: the BEST method is to go to the boar with Atilla, and leave Bleda to die to the Iron Boar. Then, take your few Tarkans and flee to the river to get bonus villagers and resources. Then, (since Bleda is killed by the boar), the Tarkans and the main base joins you. = ton of resources and buildings.

    In fact you can lure a boar at any distance by trying to build something where he stands and the boar moves away to allow you do that. That way the boar stops attacking you. You can repeat that as long as you can but it requires really good micro and a lot of attention so it's not practical for stealing. You can use this to save a luring villager you forgot about.

    I understand building a mill nea rthe boars might not seem that good in the first place. But after you are done with those boars you could still build some farms around that mill. So I don't think it is that bad at all (if the boars are not forward).

    • @flydrop8822
      @flydrop8822 2 года назад +1

      When you have those sounders of boars its not a bad idea at all, however most maps only have the 2 starting boars and they are usually far away from each other, so its best to lure them into TC then to waste w wood and time building a mill next to them. Also by the time its worth getting the sounder you are already around feudal, where the collection speed doesnt matter as much, and having to keep paying attention so none of your 7 vills dont die to the boar might be a problem at feudal where you are likely to be rushed.
      Its not a bad idea, its just a thing for maps where these sounders are common and near your base (the middle of the map is a little too dangerous to risk losing 7 vills to your enemy, if that happens the game is basically over)

    Also note boars enjoy a hill advantage, if they hit you down hill they do +25% damage. Vise versa uphil. Would've enjoyed seeing the lure down/uphil.
    Additionally there is a trick to make the boar go passive: After they attack they lose some distance, use this to place a house (shortkeys!) over where the boar is standing so that your villager starts building and the boar moves out of the construction zone, no longer chasing you, but waiting around and then walking back to its spawn. (I've seen replays where high rated players do this to save their vil when the opponent scout is trying to hinder it).

    I used to live with a guy who was 2nd place in AOE2 in his own nation. And he used to talk about this strat he and his parter wanna do in next tournament in team play. Each of them will try to lure a boar from 1 same enemy with the scout since game start instead of scouting, while multi tasking other stuff of course. And this will completely cripple one enemy’s start while they can then take out the enemy’s teammate. I don’t play AOE so I dont know if this is actual legit in AOE2 scene later on though, just some good memory of high school life.

    You could as well mention try not to walk downhill with the villager when luring a boar, especially if you dont have loom. Because it will change the normal hit from the boar from 4 to 3 before your villager dies if it gets one hit on you running down the hill. You could as well survive 5 hits from the boar if all the hits are uphill. But that is just impossible to predict in game.

    What is your opinion on killing enemy sheep and deer with your scout in the DA/FA? I know it is a bit underhanded as a tactic but is it worth doing while scouting an enemy's base? How damaging is killing 2-3 sheep/2-3 deer in your opinion?
    P.S.Great videos by the way! You often mention interesting things which aren't always immediately obvious to even more experienced players.

    You can time the boar lure with the sheep decaying so that there's no 2 decaying things at once. The lurer shouldn't build the house, the next villager does it before starting to build the mill.

    • @SpiritOfTheLaw
      @SpiritOfTheLaw  9 лет назад

      +Filip Stysiak - You point was addressed in the video. I also don't think there's a "should" and "shouldn't" about who builds the house. The standard, at least in mid-level steam games, is to build the house with the luring villager

    • @filipstysiak
      @filipstysiak 9 лет назад

      +Spirit Of The Law imho building the third house shouldn't be done just on the way to the boar. It already can be a beginning of your wall, so it's better to drop that house at 12 or 13 pop (2 pop short of the limit is still enough time so you don't get housed) when you have more scouting info.
      Plus the most straightforward defense against bar steal is doing it to the enemy yourself :)

    How to lure boars with the scout without paying attention to him? I got the answer: boar speed is 0.8 tiles per second, scouts speed is 1.2 tiles per second. so the scout is 50% quicker than the boar. So the perfect way to set the waypoints for your Scout is while you hitting the boar 2 times (it also works when you hit it 3 times), and then set your waypoints for the scout. But where to set the points? If you look at a triangle you could think that the boar walks 8 tiles in the time the scout walks 12. Maybe you think you have to angle the waypoints of the scout all 6 tiles with a 4 tiles offset to the left or right from the main path (Pythagoras theorem) to balance out the difference in speed. But take in mind that the boar don't walks a straight line to your TC but follows its target: the moving scout who walks a kind of saw tooth way. so the way of the boar looks more than a sine curve. I don't really know how the calculation formula have to look like, but here is the result:
    set the waypoints of your scout all 2 tiles with a 2 tiles offset from the main way (90 degrees, like a saw tooth wave). this is exactly the time the boar needs to catch up.
    this formula works only for the dark age scout because the feudal age scout gains extra speed. But with the correct formula you can easily find out how to set the waypoints for any other unit or elephants and rhinos. I tried this from a distance of 130 tiles (without barriers) and the boar still catches up with 1 tile distance from the scout (this depends on how often the boar hits you because it needs some time to follow you after attacking). The other good thing is: the boar never reaches the scout this way, so the distance between them stays the same and your scout don't lose more health than necessary. So you can lure your enemies boar without paying attention to it if you set your waypoints correctly. If you got a mod to show the tile grid, this is an easy way to steal the boar (if you already scouted the way) because you can choose a way without barriers.
    The problem is: how can i set such many waypoints in the time that the scout hits the boar only 2-3 times? And what is about a general formula? Please think about it =)

      If you lure one of your enemies boar after scouting his base you steal him 340 food. Thats not enough for you? Send a militia to your enemy like a drush, but don't attack his workers yet. find his deer ... and now kill them all ... normally you get groups of 3-4 deer (140 food each). That means your enemy lacking additional 420-560 food. In this way you can keep all your workers buisy, steal 340 food and your enemy is lacking up to 900 food total. That's pretty sick!

      Actually you can waste lots of meat by hitting an animal in a wrong way. An arrow or bullet through the heart is the perfect way. Just slicing it with the sword will not only mean that the meat gets all the dirt around the place where you killed the animal, but you can also mix the meat with bile or the contents of its stomach and guts.

      Arleran Provoke the boar and let it fight Bleda, run to the camp, wait and you get all the people. Than take Atilla to the other side of river for villagers and resources while sending all the troops to the south (after dealing with mining operation near the town). Send Atilla as well. It is enough people to destroy the roman camp. Free son of Leopaxis and send villagers to build a castle (and patrol in it) next to the gate of fortified city and their docks. Send Atilla and horses to Leopaxis and get support and soldiers. Leopaxis can not be harmed by enemies, due to bug in triggers. Wait and profit. On low level, you do not need to create a single unit. Or just win faster with some petards and Tarkans.

    Hey +Spirit of The Law can you make a video explaining the paths units choose?
    Why i say that and what i mean?
    I have noticed that if a villager is sitting at 5 oclock of a tc and he is tasked to go at 12 oclock of the tc he will take the longer path through 6->7->8->9->10->11->12!
    Maybe this is juice for you to make a video and explain it! Maybe its minor importance for a video! I dunno you judge ^_^
    It is not clear to me why this happens! And alsoi think its not happening always but it works for buildings (not only tc) and forest lakes too (i think)

    Boar as an offensive unit:I once played a game on HD, on Gaia, to watch some AIs fight.I decided to send an army of wolves, boars, and deer to attack one.The town center, along with villagers killed them all and started eating them.Except one.One kept attacking their town center.Slowly.AND THEY JUST DIDN'T NOTICE IT.In the end, they were stuck in the Feudal age for the entire game, and eventually the boar made them resign.

  • @Martmi29
    @Martmi29 9 лет назад

    No, but since you mention it, if you want the absolute best start in the first mission of the Attila the Hun campaign, get the boar to start attacking Bleda and immediately flee the camp with Attila and his 5 Tarkan to the stable across the river. 4 new villagers will appear there. Build a new TC. Bleda or his Tarken won't attack you because he will have been killed by the boar. AFTER you start building your new TC, send Attila back to the original Hun camp. You will get the rest of the Tarken and the Archers under your command + the TC so you will be starting with 2 TCs. On top of that Gaia (mother nature), will tribute you a few resources when you get to the villagers across the river, and then Bleda's huns will tribute you a couple thousand or so more resources after you take over the original Hun camp.

    ATILA THE HUN CAMPAIGN: there is a better way in that campaign that they don't fight and on top of that have the archers and bleda the Hun on your side too, I watched the video years ago in which a guy spent all the campaigns in pasifista way, that is without killing anyone, there he achieved that feat.
    CAMPAÑA ATILA EL HUNO: hay una mejor manera en esa campaña de que no se peleen y ademas de eso tener a los arqueros y a bleda el huno de tu lado tambien, el video lo mire hace años en la que un tipo pasaba todas las campañas en modo pasifista, o sea sin matar a nadie, ahi logro esa hazaña.

  • @Tocaraca

    Great video, but you should've mentioned that if your villager will not make it to the TC in time then you can build a house on top of it and right-click the house continuously, which causes the boar to politely move out of the way and lose aggro of your vill.
    You can also be clever with the house that you build on the way to the boar by putting it right in front of the boar, so when you shoot it, it has to go around the house and therefore your vill takes less hits and is less prone to dying.
    I also found that luring with a scout definitely feels safer if you are zigzagging rather occasionally stopping; if you stop, then with lag you might end up taking a free hit from the boar, and in the expansions where they deal extra damage to scouts, it's much more dangerous. Just zigzag continuously and you'll be fine, even with input delay.

  • @XyntXII

    fortress normally has standard resources including boar.
    nvm that:{i normally build the house with the villager after the one luring the boar to get the boar in faster.
    if you need more "wiggle room" you can garrison your villager and when the boar walks away shoot it again and so on. furthermore with 3 on wood you often come in with the boar pretty exactly when 3 sheep are depleted with 4 a bit before 4 are. (depends on the distance and on your time starting to take sheep and if you are taking 1 sheep at a time.)}
    i found that the villager normally starts attacking the boar instead of running if he/she/intersex is not a hunter; so if i accidentally clicked on a tree or a sheep (most commonly) instead of onto a blank space. (and I'll...)
    "if you expect they might steal your boar" unless you have the ballance of power mod you should just expect that if it is not islands or unless you would need to get loom to take the forward boar first or you have not found all your boar (actually you might have to expect it even more in that case)
    thank you for the video. was nice.
    i think i might have asked this again, but still: if i want to boom off a fast castle how to do it best? assuming a generic civ 2 things come to mind: when to up? 25+2 vills or 24+2 or rather more to start off with more resources in castle?
    and secondly: what should one prioritize in castle age? you spoke about wheelbarrow and handcart but horsecollar or even heavy plow? bowsaw? or rather more towncenters? how many towncenters are best in which situation?
    so many questions around that and it is already a pretty specific scenario. it seems to me as if that should be a solvable equation, if one defines a clear situation, though it still seems pretty complex.
    long comments ftw!

    I have a query
    While in the dark age(playing black forest for example)after you have consumed 2 of your nearest boars by lure hunting, is it profitable to hunt down a big group of boars(3 or more which might be quite far away) by building a mill next to them
    Or is it better to diversify the villagers to collect food from bushes and by building farms
    Obviously the above choice arises only if you are not the mongols
