PlayStation Vita was undoubtedly Sony Interactive Entertainment's most ambitious platform they ever made. They did a lot of things right, but also made a lot of questionable decisions that would ultimately lead to the platform ending up a commercial failure everywhere outside of Japan and Asia.
Join me as we travel back to 2011, and prior, to see where Sony's ambitious little handheld: PlayStation Vita and it's micro-console counterpart: PlayStation Vita TV (PS Vita TV) / PlayStation TV (PS TV) went so wrong, and doomed them both to ending up as PlayStation's worst-selling platform in the company's history . . .

    _Welcome Back Everyone!_
You guys voted, & I listened!
Today we're looking back on PlayStation Vita; it's life on the market and why the system become a commercial flop in 2 of the 3 global territories! Do me a favor and *LIKE* the video if you like it, *DISLIKE* it if you don't and *SHARE* the video around so others can see it! As always, feedback and suggestions are always welcome, and *KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR MY NEXT POLL.* I have _several_ video scripts finished, it's just up to you guys in which order they come!
Also, please consider supporting my channel on _Patreon_ ! 4K video is getting more and more difficult for me to edit on my aging rig, & I think it's past-due for some upgrades. $1 is all I'm asking, and if you would like to see additional tiers made with perks to match, message me directly and I'll come up with something to make it worth your while!
    C'ya next time around!

Watching this on my hack vita make me feel kind of guilty, however here in Brasil the prices of games are obscene! A used fat vita cost more then $200! A switch lite $500! Very nice video friend i love my vita and i do also have a new 3ds, vita is far better in my opinion!

DAVID T to be honest the vita is very capable of running tripple a games like the switch, its bad marketing strategy & high price memory killed it. Unfortunately the switch has great exclusives so in that regards. I would agree with you that the switch is more appealing but hey the vita came out 5yrs earlier than the switch, graphically speaking and performance wise is right there with the switch. Its just a shame that sony let it die without even trying hard enough, the only reason why is not completely dead is due to the japan market so we are able to get more games.

    • @soulripper31
      @soulripper31 6 лет назад +4

Lol dude, the Vita is nowhere near as powerful as the Switch. Most AAA games on the Vita ran like crap (Borderlands 2, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Assassins Creed 3: Liberations, etc.)

Since the PS Vita basically died in the U.S., if they would make another powerful handheld like the PS Vita but with better advertising and maybe cheaper memory cards, then more developers will make more games for it. I would really like to see at least a portable version of gta San Andreas or gta 4 for it since gta vcs and gta lcs were released for the PSP. Also I hope that if this does happen, that EA will release a portable version or two of Star Wars battlefront or battlefront two (the older battlefronts) and the good need for speed game like nfs most wanted on the PS Vita. I honestly don't care that much about graphics though as long as the games run smoothly.

    • @Neilos-sd6ti

They should just use normal micro sd cards, vitas card being proprietary was one of the killing blows.

    • @Neilos-sd6ti
      @Neilos-sd6ti 2 года назад

They where and still are quite expensive

    • @buster5283
      @buster5283 2 года назад

@@Neilos-sd6ti The only games those affected most were tiny indie games and Phantasy Star Online 2 because those were digital only. Most average people buy games on physical media and use a carrying case to store a few games and the ps vita itself inside of. Most people were still going to Walmart or Gamestop or Best Buy to buy AAA games or most common games in physical format at the time anyway. I am willing to bet that most people never considered buying full size games in digital only format with the sd cards for 3ds so I am tired of people acting like the price and size of the ps vita memory cards didn't make sense. They are not designed with download only in mind to begin with. They added that later with xbox 360 and ps3. I swear the ps2 and xbox generations started the crybaby generation of gamers. No wonder my brother turned out horribly. Game developers got lazier, the gamers became more like crybabies, and it only got worse with ps3, and ps4 eras. PS1 and every console in the 1990s operated with the same storage and concept idea for saves as the psp and ps vita. I don't know how hard it is to understand that Sony is both a forward looking and stuck in the past company at the same time. Large capacity memory cards only just started being made in general during the 3ds and ps vita era so storing 3+ GB games on them seemed stupid due to having to carry around 2-3 memory cards to have 10 games on digital only format. 128 GB memory cards at the time were a new concept and so every company that made them: Sony's proprietary cards and other compabies charged $100+ for them; the same as Samsung and Sandisk are doing now with their 512 GB and 1 TB sd cards.

I don't think it failed necessarily, it just didn't do as well as they thought. Look at the amount of games released (yes there are vita games) and they even ported over their heavy hitting franchises. People who understood the Vita fell in love with it, and praise the little device. If you're thinking about getting one in 2018, do it, Even just to play uncharted golden abyss, kill zone and little big planet. Also it can stream from your ps4 so you could play the likes of yakuza, horizon zero dawn, GTA v, battlefield 1, or any other game you may have on your ps4. It was just too ahead of its time.

I just did exactly this last month.... truly great machine and I had to have one. Got it imported brand new from Japan and treated myself to some amazing titles. Sadly the memory cards still cost a fortune!
I still cant explain to others how great that machine is. Playing Killzone, LBP, MGS2+3, Uncharted, NFS on a handheld is incredible, especially as I would say it is like having a PS3 in your pocket.
The original PSP was many years ahead of its time, as was the ps3. PSP had video, music, internet browser, full gaming years before ipods became that popular and long before that all turned into phones....
PS3 wiped the floor as a media centre, Blu ray, internet browser, Love film (netflix), remote play music and films off an external hard drive via the internet,
playstation TV (come on, that was an amazing thing, to record live TV long before TVR's were popular). The Xbox 360 had none of those features at that time, and a comparable PC would have cost a lot more. These days they are all pretty standard features in tech, but back then it was way before its time.

Here is the thing, all that is useless if you do not have a PS4 like me. Neither am I interested in buying a PS4. Luckily, you can hack the Vita and stream PC games on it. Also, Vita has some really good native games. So thats always great.

Cool piece, if somewhat redundant given the huge number of articles already up on the subject. Would have been better if you could have grilled some Sony execs or got the dirt from grumpy developers! Next, how about focusing on how the Vita soldiers on today, with no love or support from Sony? Great indies, a stream of Japanese titles and sufficient sales to keep developers interested.

I remembered the psvita used to get tremendous praise back in 2012 when it first came out, and seeing game with (almost) ps3 graphic on a portable handheld system back then was mind-blowing to me! It's a shame not many people, specially Sony itself, couldn't see its potential and now it got overshadowed by the Switch.

It's my favourite console; I've had it since a week after it was available in the UK, and my library is growing constantly.
I have 2 games preordered for 2018 - Rainbow Moon, and Rainbow Skies - and waiting on 2 games announcing localisation (Persona 3 Dancing, Persona 5 Dancing) - and my eye on half a dozen or more further games including Hawaii Shakedown, Steins;Gate Elite, Pixel Noir and so on... On top of games I've already bought this year including Digimon, and Secret of Mana.
Tl;dr - sure, the Vita was a commercial bust, but it's an absolute gem. Sony had no idea what they had, but the fans of the Vita did...
6 years later, and Nintendo's new baby is beginning to outsell PS4 in Japan, I don't know if Sony will want to ignore that forever... #PSV2? #PSP3?

Now that I have decided to be back in the game, I don't know If I should buy it or buy another portable device. I mainly want it for the Japanese games. But if there isn't a translation version of the games, it would probably be a lose for me as I unfortunately don't speak Japanese.

360p Squad! Great analysis Tristan. The main reason the PSVita failed is because of the lack of advertisement and positive recognition. If I hear a click what it remind me of? The Nintendo Switch. If a hear a strange Japanese girl saying 'Playstation' it reminds me of PS4. What is there to remind me of the PSVita? Oh yeah, *NOTHING* . It's like Sony wasn't even trying with the PSVita. After the success of the PS2 Sony got their pride all tangled up. But they managed to turned a negative situation into a positive situation and even surpassed the sales of Xbox 360 last minute! In 2015 they could have turned the situation of the PSVita around but now with release of the Nintendo Switch it's just too late to have a last minute Victory.

Denny T If it doesn't have that suite your interest that doesn't mean that it has nox games. PSVita was a half-baked system which Sony didn't put any effort in. Nintendo Switch is far better than the PSVita. Also the Nintendo Switch is selling more because it is being advertised unlike the PSVita.

I own a fat vita and bought a pstv when it came out - love the systems but after owning both for a few years I definitely think besides the memory cards and lack of marketing, there was too much focus on gimmicks in the vita games like the rear touch pad, camera and accelerometer that ruined the experience for me too often and I would actively stay away from games that used these features. After Henkaku came out, I was playing PSTV more than ever and now I can really appreciate the systems after what the vita community has done for the scene.

Vita is an amazing testimony that PIRACY (the thing feared *MOST* by the platformholders) does not negatively affect console and games sales. PS2 was cracked wide open almost from day one and went on to become the best selling game console of all time, while Vita was "the most secure system" (LoL) and barely managed 10 million

My question is, how is Nintendo handling piracy on the Switch? Sure they give you a warning that any modification to the system software can result in bricking the console but there's news stories of people hacking the hell out of it, getting it to run as a fully functional Nvidia tablet. The system is getting barraged with games getting ported to it as well as getting developed for it. It uses micro SD as well so shouldn't developers be worried given the PSPs past? Or why does Sony have this problem worse?

    • @88oscuro
      @88oscuro 6 лет назад

      Switch is already hacked though..
Sony did what they did with memory cards because there where a lot of piracy on the psp.
Dreamcast was insanly pirated and was one of the reasons it died. Might also be one reason.

Nintendo bans your console if you log into the eshop. Also, since hacking the Switch is a bit convoluted for now, it still is niche. They do it for 3DS as well. That does not stop hacking of course and I doubt anything will. If there is anything to learn from the Vita, its that you cannot stop piracy no matter what and sacrificing user friendliness and treating all buyers as potential pirates will only backfire. Nintendo, despite the 3DS being hacked, did not opt for a proprietary memory card in Switch unlike the PS Vita, because for them, being affordable is more important.

Tried the dragon quest builders demo on Switch, bought it on Vita instead. Having absolute blast playing it. I love the switch, but compared to Vita, it's just so much comfortable to hold because it's smaller. And the 5" screen is just enough for me. Not to mention the 6 hours battery compared to 3 hours on Switch.

Great Video! I hope Sony sees this. I don't like they try to blame the market for the Vita's failure when it was their critical mistakes that prevented sales. A PS VIta Pro would be awesome and could be sold at a profit just as the Nintendo switch sales at a profit.

Excellent video in depth and informative. I do plan on getting one.. but the total cost is more than a PS4 or Xbox 1!
Its almost $300 for a new vita and 64gb card. add in a game and or two, it'd be around $380. The pro is only a few dollars mo! PS4&XB1 bundles beat the vita cost wise. I'm someone who doesn't own PS4,Xb1 still and doing the math is telling I feel.

Probably could added in that ps vita release wasn't at good time where smartphone where taking off that year. F2P games were everywhere on google/apple store.
There's still new games releasing on ps vita till current date but consider as 2018 the hardware kinda dated. It's need new processor more ram and 5G connection wifi to make it great again.
What if sony could had AAA title on new handheld console where graphics tone down only 10-15% from ps4? That'll be great.

Reason for Failure "This new system is great it will give you the closest experience to console gaming on the go ever... btw we've introduced this new memory card for it that isn't backward compatible with the psp or psp go memory, it's completely proprietary and will be significantly more expensive then a microsd… the units aren't shipping with any onboard memory"

    Great Video!
    Lots of good info.
    But just a few notes,
1- The ps TV has native support for using the ps4 touchpad for touch screen emulation.
2-I was unable to find any evidence of bricks from playing blacklisted Ps Tv games.
3-I don't think it's really fair to assume that 'everyone' was 'more than likely' using a modded psp back in the day.
Especially in the early days of modding, you'd need special hardware to even mod your system.
It got much easier with time, But up until the self signing and easy downgrade software much later, it was still much harder than even hacking a 3ds today.
Yes, a ton of people modded there systems, but the PSP sold 76 million copies, and I guess you could check web search trends, and site traffic for those years, but I hardly doubt even 1/3 (25 million people) modded there system.
4-While there is much debate over while the vita failed, it does not seem to be a single reason, but I believe the marketing, support from sony, memory card prices, and the cost of making AAA games for that system all played a factor.

While I agree that the memory cards were a major contributing factor, I would say, that kind of how the XB1 and Wii U had a laundry list of issues since their announcement, so did Vita. Vita had online passes for the majority of its games for the first year and half of the systems life, a lot of its early games forced gimmick control schemes like motion sensing and touch, many of its games early on were buggy and/or broken requiring large patches, many of its games early on were missing content like online modes like Mod Nation Racers or were downright money grabbing schemes like Ridge Racer, it had 3G support but only through 1 carrier, Near was a great idea but highly underused, for a lot of people that back touch pad just plain got in the way, and the advertisement and marketing was far from what Sony did with PS4.
The thing is, much like how I feel about Wii U and XB1, I really like my Vita. While Vita had a horrible lead up to launch and didn't have a great first 2 years, and yes, it faded pretty bad after those first 2 years, it has a lot of pros going for it and has really turned into a great system. It easily has my favorite OS of any dedicated gaming device released so far, the online is free yet is almost as feature rich as PS4 and XB1, it's BC with the majority of digital PSP games and plays a ton of my digital purchases I made from PS3 including all of my PS1 classics, it's region free so even if a game doesn't get a physical release here in the US I can import an English version from elsewhere, I can play on the TV via PS TV, I can stream my PS4 games to it, and games come on carts which gives them much more longevity.
Sure, they didn't turn things around for the system and sure, it took them way too long to reverse the online pass blunder, but what's there now is a really awesome little device that has aged quite well despite never selling well. To this day I'm still buying NEW physical games for it and I doubt I'll stop anytime soon. That said, I wish Sony was as supportive of their hardware as us Vita owners are. It's a damn shame to see how it went out. While I love the device, how Sony seems to have forgotten about Vita or the people who purchased it soured me to Sony and makes me to skeptical to supporting them with future hardware.

The mishandling of the Vita's marketing in the western regions and proprietary memory cards really hurt the system's reputation among hopeful customers. At least it's region free so that makes import gaming in the west a viable option for customers that already purchased one. Picked up quite a few gems for the Vita and some retro PS1 games to play on it while on the go via the PSN store.

When I see things about vita, it is an interesting system now with ps1, ps2, psp titles in the sony eshop and cross play for ps3 and ps4 make it the ultimate sony portable system, but its price. The system was $250 at launch + $100 for the 64gb memory card (best to get the highest storage memory card and put it into the system and forget it in there) = $350 for the complete system at launch. Now the system goes for low price used and can be bought new as japan import, same with memory card but for much lower price. While it can't compete with switch, at this point, vita is a great retro gaming device and portable device from sony. Hope they make a sucessor that competes with the switch and is powerful portable system.

The anti piracy measures really hurt the consumers not only in price but in usability too.
Putting a movie on the Vita required a conversion to a specific format tolerated by the system and even worse transfering it or any data from the PC or PS3 to the Vita through cable was painful and slow. You had to be on the same account to transfer anything and the process took ages even for relatively small files and the price for that thing was huge. 250 for the system and another huge pay for a memory card that was slow as shit.
It didn't help that the downloads speeds were abysmal, most of the time downloads would fail with the only redeemeable feature being the resume function. The Vita was a great system, it was elegant, felt premium, the screen on the first model is still the best for gaming, had youtube app which I still want on the freaking Switch, it was the all-in-one portable system. But then Sony saw the mobile market and they blamed it for the Vita's low sales ignoring their bullshit "features" the system had. They could've done a 180 with the 2000 model, they did ok with the microUSB but if they used microSD then the Vita wuld've had more appeal to consumers since SD cards became really popular then.
The Vita prooves to me that Sony got REALLY lucky with the PS4. The fact they didn't do anything different from the PS3(apart from putting a fee for Multiplayer) got them the popularity. Microsoft fucked up with the Xbox One's DRM and Nintendo released a underpowered console, the WiiU. The fact that Sony never listens to their consumers and the PSVita shows me that they are here because of luck and nothing else. I can't think of anything innovating coming from the PS Brand just things done right, copied and a lot of dumb luck.

I don't think memory cards were a real reason for Vita failing. In the beggining they advertised it as a portable console for AAA games, mostly sold on physical copies...therefore you only needed a 4gb memory card.
I don't agree with launch titles either, it had a great early catalogue with almost all sony exclusives and new original games like Gravity rush and Tearaway.
The correct answer is marketing and Sony giving up almost instantly

Well said. I think the memory cards certainly added to this, but the crap marketing and giving up on it were the biggest.

The Vita had tons of potential even with the memory cards being a thing. We've seen companies do their own proprietary memory formats back in the 90's and early 2000's and no one cared because they were priced fairly. The issue Sony had with the Vita was not necessarily the memory cards themselves, it was about the price of the memory cards. Those things were WAY too high in price to be considered ok by the standards of any SD cards that had the same amount of memory. They were so pricey you'd think Sony would've had to make a blood sacrifice just to design the damn things. If Sony had made the cards much cheaper and/or had at least SOME memory built into the Vita's themselves, then their memory cards would've been far more forgivable. Pirates are, of course, another huge reason for Sony wanting to do this and I can tell you right now that I hate game pirates for causing stuff like this. If its for obscure or old consoles that you can't buy games digitally somewhere like Xbox live, PSN or Nintendo shop then that's one thing, but pirating new games for current gen consoles is a terrible practice that causes systems like the Vita to fail in the long run. I guess only the most hardcore or faithful gamers can appreciate supporting devs by buying the games legally.

Given the choice between my Vita and my PS4 I'd go with the Vita in a heartbeat. Only problem is the lack of games on the Vita...though a lot of what's there I enjoy (Persona 4 Golden, Trails in the Sky/Trails of Cold Steel, Ys etc.).
Can also get a lot of classic games as digital downloads (Megaman Legends) and although the back touch pads are spoty at best, I found a cheap case that adds physical levers to make these far more usable.
Though, honestly, as much as I love my Vita, my Switch beats it out entirely. Looks every bit as great as the Vita, can play as a handheld or as a console and already has a huge library of games.

I do wish that Sony would watch this video and the many others like it and learn from its mistakes and make a new PS VITA successor or even re-release it at a lower price as I consider it the best truly portable system and it just has a certain something about it, just like the PSP did when that was first released.

I bought a PSVita last month (brand new imported from Japan) and am loving it. Truly great machine, killed by Sony.
Poor marketing, making people think it was a ps3 add-on only and expensive memory cards held sales back.
I am gutted to know that there will not be any new great games on it (I am not a fan of JRPG's and constant fast paced indys) however I have a huge backlog of great titles to play. (Killzone, MGS2+3, Uncharted, NFS, Assassins, Tearaway, LBP so far and more to buy...)
The original PSP was years ahead of its time, giving us games, video, music and full internet browser LONG before Ipods and phones had these features. A truly great machine, yet when people saw me with mine (I pre-ordered it almost a year before release) they would ask 'is that like a gameboy?' - Marketing was poor for the PSP and it was even worse for the PS Vita.
PSVita cross play, cross buy and cross save are AMAZING, especially with the indy games often given away by PSPLUS, where they are more suited to a handheld but with the added bonus of local multiplayer on ps4 versions.

Most people likely wouldn't know what the word vita meant and from the outside it doesn't sound like a successor to the psp. Naming it PSP2 or PSP Duo would've been much smarter to market it having two analog sticks, being a companion to the ps3/4 and if they kept using memory stick duos they could've added that to the marketing if they wanted to. Overall with every step forward they made with each psp model they made an equal step back as well 😅
