Have done three Simpson crossings in my Patrol, never had an issue of any kind. Preparation is the key. And unlike the dramatic beat-up in the video, the three "stranded" guys would never starve because 20 vehicles a day pass through.
@robertgoetz2678 I thought so, especially after stating what MAN stood for. Well, us Aussies nickname things or shorten words, and obviously, we call those M. A. N. vehicles just plainly, Man. With no imagination or unique word for it. I used to drive M. A. N. Buses, we called them just Man, too. The problem is if you write something on the vehicle like MAN, and that's what it's going to be called. Like most vehicles out there, we either say the model or make or a type. the only time to say the whole lot is if it's your pride and joy or you are reporting an accident or car enthusiast. He might have other vehicles and calls this "The Man" to identify it to others. Don't take an offence towards us, Aussies, who call your vehicles or anything else a different word or use your shortened version the wrong way. I hope I explained it okay.
Fantastic Barnsey! I conquered Big Red in the early 90's(after 4 attempts!) Spent 6 great days in Birdsville and stuffed a back axle about 15k's past the racetrack heading out! Roadtrain to Toowoomba after that!
Anyone notice the front wheels on the Landy while being loaded on flat bed the front wheels sure seemed to spin forward in a way to indicate that it was engaged and not broken as the story line indicated.
Seems you are unaware that rear axles can also break. Given the Landrover had excessive weight over the rear there's a good chance they only had front drive.
Deflating the tyres DECREASES the chance of a puncture not increases it. He didn't deflate on his first attempt up the easy side of big red because he was told not to. Absolutely no way an experienced off roader, especially a recovery expert like Barnsey sets off without deflating first. He's been doing this for far too long to make dumb mistakes like that.
Not true on 100 ply truck tyres...... But I also doubt that the tyres ever get inflated since this is a pure Simpson recovery vehicle. You know he doesn't have tyre problems because he only carries one spare.
@@gqwarrior6694 Oh, sorry - I didn't know you were the world expert on tyres, having held such a high intelligence job for so long. I only have 35 years offroad and desert experience , so I accept your esteemed superiority - not.
@@gqwarrior6694 I admit I have no experience as a tyre fitter (an occupation reserved for ex cons) but I am willing to bet I know much more about many many things you can't begin to understand. 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
Barnesy is an absolute hero. But heroism has its price and he won't even start the truck until $6k has been transferred into his account. If your car is worth less than that, it's cheaper to leave it and hitch a ride out with one of the many cars that cross the Simo daily.
That's what happens when you try to do a Toyota job in a Land Rover!! LoL I'm surprised the MAN isn't a 6x6. It's a big carry load for a single axle given how heavy modern 4x4 rigs are now !
@@Mav_F You really think the Simpson Desert crossing is a main road? It's not. Most solo travellers NEVER get caught out, contrary to your false assertion.
@@einfelder8262 I know what you are saying and I was saying that a lot of people get caught out every year even on dirt roads truckers use every so often.
Probably scripted, but rear axle could be broken, or front CV is shattered which would cause what was seen on the video. Probably rear because the vehicle is stupidly overweight in the rear.
Who you calling to help you if you got stranded in the outback?
Steve Graham
@@cecilchance5843 He won't help you in the Simpson.

True Aussie legend.

Best trucking show in the world ❤
to bloody right, ice rd truckers is a close 2nd
Awesome! By the way, MAN means not man but is an abbreviation of Maschinenfabrik Augsburg Nürnberg, was working there for 23 years…
Most people know it's a make of truck. It's just what he calls it. A MAN get it?

All on these kind of shows is scripted. Do you even think they can run a business if they are always breaking down like in those series?
Rear tail shaft is broken but being a landrover it would be the rear axel spline broken
Seems you are unaware that rear axles can also break. Given the Landrover had excessive weight over the rear there's a good chance they only had front drive.
That would have been a very expensive recovery (if authentic).
Why you should always travel with at least one other vehicle and have the appropriate insurance. Good job!
Not everyone can muster a second vehicle. I have met solo travellers on every one of my 3 Simpson crossings.
It is not necessary to climb Big Red as there is a bypass track. This video is just a sensationalised beat up.

Being a bit dramatic. The Simpson isn't exactly hard.
Why they go by themselves solo vehicle only?
A lot of people do. And a lot of them get caught out. Unless they stick to the main roads that a lot of truckers use.
