  • Since its enactment on June 30th, 2020, the Beijing-imposed National Security Law (NSL) has had a far-reaching effect on Hong Kong politics, media, and society. The enforcement of the NSL has resulted in the arrest and trial of 47 Hong Kong democrats; the closure of Apple Daily, Stand News, and other media outlets; the implementation of “patriotic education” in schools; sweeping new powers for police; and an overall lack of public protests and demonstrations that were once common in the city.
Meanwhile, the government and their supporters have said that the NSL has restored law and order in Hong Kong. The “black-clad violence” that pro-establishment figures condemned during the 2019 unrest has disappeared from daily life. Additionally, proponents of the NSL have pointed out that all governments have their own legislation covering national security and Hong Kong should be no different from the rest of the world.
This panel featuring John Burns, Albert Chen, Emily Lau, and Ronny Tong will discuss the NSL and its effect on Hong Kong over the past three years. Moderated by FCC President Lee Williamson.

Very interesting debate amongst lawyer, law professors and a former legislator cum former reporter. Also interesting to learned more about NSL and colonial crime law. Also good to hear all talking about Mainland Chinese law that all of them have never lived in the Mainland but purported to be experts of such law practice. But again good to know the HKSAR laws are different from Mainland laws of any kind. Thank you FCC for providing such a platform for debate freely.

That channel is structured in such a way that doesn't cause any chaos though. And so many individual companies, well.. they don't literally offend as such... cos, they go under the radar. The problem here in UK today... is that, what they write.. does not actually violate the basic foundation of society... So... if you want to rant it out amongst your friends, then rant it out... don't take it to the "social media" (that is exposed to 8 billion users). This.. of course, is not the fault of the local HK citizens.. and that is why the "media" channels in HK... needs to actually take care of what they do and don't write, which is true. Cos they don't want to overstep that line between what is local, versus what is global. At the same time.. you do, and can learn about the news in other formats.. i.e. via movies, or via "dramas" based on half truths and half facts. It does not have to be absolute media. The problems with the media in HK itself, is that, the original media, that exists... were from colonial days... and times... and as such.. they literally... has no reformatted themselves. Or they don't write good and decent comprehensive articles... as such... You will find that, in the UK, the media, writes.. or they act more like a "marketing dept" actually.. but the media in HK doesn't do that at all? They literally "quote" the government.... and that is the wrong approach. And wrong legacy. That is why they seem to provoke most of the times, but does not realise that, and it does not create that "impartiality" between what is "private" versus what is "public"... as in.. what is private and personal to you, and what is commercial and separated.. and affects you....

Britain never should’ve relinquished control of Hong Kong to China. They signed over the human rights to all the inhabitants in the process.

Brit should never have taken over HK which it had done so immorally on the grounds tha it could continue to peddle & traffic narcotics into China.

@@tweedy4sg: What is happening here is chaos.. and even if Britain takes it back now.. it is pointless, cos it has opened up areas that it should NOT have done so ? Here in the UK... Britain included, various individuals.. and groups of people.. as in, their own land, and their own people, are all invited to sit in the Lords or the House of Commons. Which is similar to the State Councils. (All state counsils, are mostly the descendents of the Imperial families of various form, one or the other. So from this perspective, this is no different at all to the British one.) And then... there was another separate grouping, I think... for "ethnic minorities" group.. from autonomous regions.. is my understanding....
the problem is.. whether the "one country, two systems"... is reflecting... what the British thinks should be the second system... (in relation to the chinese one)... or whether it is the actual.... second system... with the global system.... or otherwise... etc.... Cos frankly... what was the local laws in HK.. and some people tried to follow the old Imperial laws... are basically prosecuted.. and are sidelines, and wrapped up under the "NSL "..... Some of those are the next of kin of the local politicians. It is a case of.. they have been swooped up. And hidden away. Which then means that, the other members from other regions, could and will one day attack HK and take over... and the people would be washed over. Which we KNOW... is happening now in HK. So this is a form of invasion. And this is why people rioted.. cos it is Western forces, that has done this, to this tiny, remaining Imperial... code of small region.... And when you have other countries, like Japan.. and like South Korea.. and like Taiwan.. saw this... They went up in arms, and was SO angry !!!!....
YEH... nobody writes it like THAT !!!!!....

The people of Hong Kong were oppressed under British rule. They were granted freedom after the 1997 handover.
