  • As Hong Kong celebrates the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Special Administrative Region on July 1st, the world is not short of turbulences. The conflict in Ukraine sees no sign of ceasing, the tension across the Taiwan Straits flares up, and the intense struggle between China and the US continues. According to Zhang Weiwei, a leading thinker based in Shanghai, this is also a time of crisis for liberal democracy. He will explore, from a civilisational state’s perspective, the meaning of democracy and good governance as well as its possible implications for the future of China’s political relations with the West and for Hong Kong entering the next phase of One Country, Two Systems. Moderated by FCC President Keith Richburg.
Zhang Weiwei is a distinguished professor of international relations and Director of the China Institute at Fudan University, as well as a board member of China’s National Think Tanks Council. He had worked as a senior English interpreter for Deng Xiaoping and other Chinese leaders in the mid-1980s and has travelled to over 100 countries. He holds a Ph.D. in international relations from Geneva University and has written extensively in Chinese and English on China’s political and economic reforms, the China model of development, China’s foreign policy and comparative political governance. He first predicted that the Arab Spring would soon become the Arab winter in a much-publicised debate in 2011 with Francis Fukuyama, author of The End of History and the Last man.

Keith do you know what debate means? Just shouting to your opposite is not debating and you should review your tape and see how inadequate you’ve performed in this respect. I really find it hard to believe you the best journalist that US can offer to represent foreign journalists in HK!

Imagine he is a teacher in HK, 2019 is the result with such teacher in the educational system, mass of stupid students- rioters causing huge damage to the city.
He should come to London to see how many people waiting in line for free food, very likely the same in his only country

It is called arrogance, and he did that in purpose. You can't talk to someone with bias and a closed mind.

If chairman values freedom over lives lost to covid, does he also value freedom to carry guns over lives lost to mass shootings?

    如果要求公平的话,我认为应该把美国在疫情中死亡的那一百多万人的观点纳入进来,问问他们是否对政府的防疫政策满意。

At what cost, FCC HK? Is over 1 million lives lost in US not a great human cost? Where is your humanity?

Mr. President (of FCCHK, fortunately), you need to look at how the lockdown in Shanghai has saved lives, contained infection, prevented spread further down the Yangtze River Delta, not by looking at how many people killed their dogs or starved during the lockdown.
Leaders in China look at the whole country as a chessboard and don't bother with dogs.

It's unfortunate that Keith lacks respect & patience for Prof Zhang's expression of his views to the questions posed. Keith attempted to display 'superiority' with his
very uncalled for manner of interaction with his interviewee. Could hv been more
    professional.

Prof Zhang eloquently explained the merits of a meritocracy as compared to the partisan politics of a democracy. It remains to be seen which is more sustainable. Also he spoke more eloquently and politely in his second language than the FCC Chair did in his first language. He claims to be a Prof himself but trash interviewed like BBC Hardtalk. Like Prof Zhang politely suggested, “You have to improve yourself”😂. Though fair enough he concluded that, ”we can learn a lot from each other“

2 Month lockdown not means no food 2 months, my parents-in-law live in Shanghai. During the 2 months of lockdown, they received free vegetables, rice, etc. from government many times, and they were notified and join the WeChat group of the community. If they have any difficulties, they can ask help in the WeChat group, and then volunteers will assist it was implemented. My mother-in-law needed insulin but couldn't go to the hospital due to the lockdown. The volunteers contacted several hospitals to find it, helped to get it back. They didn't starve duo to food lack, but they complained to us the cooking were monotonous because they couldn't buy kinds vegetables due to the lockdown.
