I just listened to Clint Eastwood talk about how they used to be called macaroni westerns in Japan and then the Italians went to Spain and started calling them spaghetti westerns.

Í appreciate your comments but you referred to A Fistful of Dollars as an inspiration for Japanese Spaghetti westerns. Actually, isn't it the other way around? The Japanese movie Yojimbo (1961) was essentially remade into A Fistful of Dollars (1964).

I said "it sound like A Fistful of Dollars, right?" I'm trying to draw a connection to a film that I know my audience has seen and knows well. I *could* have espoused Kurosawa's influence on Leone, but it was Leone's style, and the style of the spaghetti western format (distinctly combining operatic themes, snap zooms, tight framing on faces, pop-influenced music) that Gosha is deliberately channeling here in the two Samurai Wolf movies. Of course, Gosha was also a major fan of Kurosawa and apparently spent years trying to compete with the master by inverting some of Kurosawa's themes and making films that are twists on more well-regarded Japanese classics. Had this been a written review, or a history of the chambara genre, I would have gotten into all of that, but here on RUclips I have to keep things as approachable as possible. My Fistful of Dollars comparison is there as easy reference for a casual audience.

Loved the comment about how there are only so many Spaghetti Western Plots. Anytime my wife and I binge on either Spaghetti Westerns or Kung Fu movies, we notice that the plots tend to boil down to "Ah'm goin' after the man who shot mah Paw!!" (No, that's not a critique ... we love them, hence the binges. It's about the journey, not the destination.)

I’ve been binge watching sixties Japanese samurai movies , But recently I thought I’d look at a fistful of dollars for context , it was only the power of Clint Eastwood on the screen that carries the movie and of course the great Lee van cleef , With mediocre actors these movies would never have gained the cult status they have ,

Have you seen Sakuyaki Western Django? I have it on DVD and it's from Asia but don't remember where it's from. It's an Asian spaghetti western but looking in a way like a comic book. Anyway good review and cool video Heath!👉😃👈

Yeah, Sukiyaki Western Django is a little outside my wheelhouse and era of movies, but I like the idea of it.

@@CerealAtMidnight I have a few other movies besides horror like a handful of westerns, some comedy, action, sci-fi, fantasy and documentaries. But horror is still my main thing!😜

Speaking of japanese westerns (although more American style), it is so sad that there was not enough demand for the Nikkatsu sets released by Arrow so they never even got standard editions not to mention more volumes. I am glad that Man with a Shotgun is on the second Seijun Suzuki: The Early Years boxset, so I coud see it, but I would have loved to see more Nikkatsu westerns, like this one: ruclips.net/video/6S_N0tZPL70/видео.html
Also, for anyone who is a fan of Nikkatsu B movies, here is an old scene compilation, that also contains scenes from the movie I have linked the trailer for above: ruclips.net/video/-bBr-ZlJYYo/видео.html
