My FAVORITE part was actually the introduction.
Its such a simple thing, but the fact that Joss did a "complete" background / info dump for anyone watching the movie who has never seen Firefly before, WHILE making it entertaining & brief (5 minutes or less) so as to not bore the FANS . . .is AWESOME!
(and sadly, a very rare thing)

I was at the world premier of this, with Joss and some of the cast. I felt kind of bad for them tbh, they got a huge ovation when they came in, before the movie played. Then at the end, the applause was kind of muted (in comparison to their welcome anyway). It wasn't because we didn't love the movie, we were all just kind of stunned, still mourning the Wash thing. I always hoped they understood that!

@CinemaBlend not sure if its been mentioned already, but here's a fun fact...
Around the 11:55 mark of your video, River can be seen sitting just in front of a container that reads, "reusable container... do not destroy". this was a joke placed in due to the fact that after the original series aired and wasn't picked up for a second season, many of the original sets and the like were in fact destroyed, forcing them to be remade for the film.
Just finished watching your reaction to the entire series and its always fun to be a part of someone discovering this amazing universe, so thank you for sharing!

I think I might have seen an episode when the showed aired and just couldn't find it again, so I forgot about it. Then I saw the trailer for the movie and I wanted to see it, but I just didn't get a chance to see it in the theater. I forgot about it again and then I saw the movie sitting on a shelf in some video rental place and remembered I wanted to see it. I rented the movie, completely fell in love with it and then rented the series. I now own several copies of the series and the movie on Blu-ray and DVD, because I wanted to see all the special features. I seek out the graphic novels, because I want the stories to continue. This franchise or world or verse is just so special and I wish I could see more.

Everyone should watch the Firefly 10th-anniversary program. Joss Whedon said he would never have killed off any characters if he knew how well Serenity would be received. He also gave brief outlines as to how season two would be. For example, both Kaylee and Zoe are pregnant and Zoe and Jayne would argue over who'd teach the kids about guns. Also, we would have found out that Inara had a fatal disease and other tidbits that are now lost forever.
Except that Robert A. Heinlein, in his last few books, introduced the concept of the "World as Myth" which supposes that all fictional universes are equally real and, moreover, are accessible to one another via interdimensional travel. So, in some alternate universe, Serenity and her crew are still flying.

I was a huge fan of the series when it was airing, and I had no idea the movie had come out either. Similarly, I had no idea about the series until the 4th episode, because FOX also did very little promotion for the show originally (though missing the first few episodes turned out not to be a big deal since they were all shown out of order anyway).
Both the movie and the series "flew under the radar" for a great many people at the time - It seems like at least 1/2 of the people I have ever spoken to about Firefly had not heard of it until after it had aired, in part or entirely.

Did you notice that Zoe explained the definition of the word hero to a God? The Golden God! Yes, that was Glenn Howerton, meaning Malcolm Reynolds and Dennis Reynolds shared a moment on the silver screen, after a fashion. In the commentary track, Nathan Fillion reveals Howerton had been dating Morena Baccarin at the time, then jokes that it is in fact because he was dating her, not because Reavers captured him, that Mal then shoots his character dead.

Now that you have watched it. I can mention this. Though this is a spoiler for those reading comments who have not seen the series or movie. Only continue if you have. That commercial that triggers River, is like a brand name. You will notice that Jayne is wearing a Blue Sun Corporation shirt when River slashes him and says he looks better in red. That is also the brand of the labels on the cans of food that river starts tearing off and Shepperd says they will have to have some mystery meals. Blue Sun Corporation is supposedly behind the Fruity Oatey Bars in the commercial that triggers River.

Its a fantastic film, but what I noticed on a recent viewing (that I never remember being so taken aback by before on previous viewings--a great many years before) was just how grim and sad it was, right from the start. Not even factoring character deaths later in the film, right at the beginning it is such a change in tone from the show.

Actually, the one thing the DVDs/BlueRays and the replays on the streaming services are missing is that EACH EPISODE had almost the same "Earth That Was" intro at the start, just before the cold opening. Book narrated it for some episodes, Mal for the rest. It went like this:
Mal1 : Here's how it is: Earth got used up, so we terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths, some rich and flush with the new technologies, some not so much. Central Planets, them as formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. Got a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, took his genius sister out of some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low profile. You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is.
Mal2 : Here's how it is: The Earth got used up, so we moved out and terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths, some rich and flush with the new technologies, some not so much. The Central Planets, them as formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. Shes a transport ship, Firefly class. Got a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher for some reason, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor too, took his genius sister out of some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low profile, you understand. You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is.
Book : After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and hundreds of new Earths were terra formed and colonized. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

i dunno if any one has answered this but in one of your other vids you asked about the english/chinese language usage in the universe. The lore explains that when the colonisation happened the majority of people came from america/european and china (approximatly, naturally there is others mixed but those are the bulk) due to this the culture that formed is based off those areas. such as the capital planet being called londinium. the combination of the two languages is another. from there you can see how the different cultures developed on each of the worlds. thats the in world explanation

Watch the credits scene at the start, straight after "where are you, little girl?', Serenity on screen and "what was that?", the oh god, oh god, we're all gonna die. From the Mal in the window, cut inship, right up to 'directed by joss whedon' there are no cuts.......before anyone comments, yes i know theres one clever hidden cut.

OK, for those who don't know. Firefly came on air fall 2002 on Friday nights, which was terrible as everyone goes out on Fridays. It was a time before internet TV so everything was recorded if you were out. But FoxTV kept moving the show times for various reasons including major league playoffs. Episodes were shown out of order and the first 2 hour episode wasn't shown till end of season. For those reasons and more it failed, not because it wasn't good, but FOX TV didn't like it and killed it. In spite of all that, it still got fans.

Fortunately, I found Firefly's message board while Firefly was still on the air. Made a lot of life long friends that way. Saw a few friends go on to become extras in the movie. Many of us were invited to the red carpet premiere of the movie.
Up until the pandemic, a lot of us still get together each year at the fan run Can't Stop The Serenity charity screenings of the movie to benefit the Equality Now organization and other local charities. Also prior to the pandemic, there is a fan run Firefly themed shindig that changes locations every year for fans to put on their fancy duds, come out and learn about that year's locale, and dance the night away or just hang out with other Browncoats.

I was fortunate enough to attend Cant stop the Serenity for three years in Baltimore, before no theater would agree to hold it anymore.

@@jamesjohnston1935 Chicago found a historic theater to hold Can't Stop The Serenity at for many years that eventually got bought out by someone who turned it into a nightclub. They found another location for one more year, but after changing management they couldn't find any more locations.
There had been a single year when someone had hosted one in Milwaukee at a theater. Years later another Milwaukee, WI group sprang up. They hosted their's first at a table top gaming pub with a large basement space and then subsequently at another geeky pub with a private lounge area. Last year they hosted it at a larger space. Sad I couldn't make it on account of moving. (I had donated hundreds of items over the years to their charity auction.)
Also helped out a couple who hosted a couple in Platteville, WI at the historic theater before moving to a Madison, WI suburb and using their local church. The church already had a license in place to show copyrighted media, so that's what allowed them to depart from having to rely on showing it at a theater or pay the licensing fee.
Last year made it to a CSTS event down in San Diego.

Joss made a deal with Universal and Fox that he would do two series of their choosing and he would then get to do one of his choosing. Buffy and Angel were the two he had to do and Firefy, which he had been working on for years was the third. The new heads at Universal and Fox did not like the deal or Firefly at all. When they came into power they made sure Firefly was not going to make it. They didn't show the pilot which explained everything until three episodes in. They put it in a shitty time slot and even called the cast and crew at their Christmas Party to tell them it was canceled. Despite all this it was a hit. Fans bought the DVD sets and set them to the troops in IRAQ and Afghanistan which created a whole other fan base. The demand to bring back the series was deafening after a few years. So Universal made Serenity to put the final knife in the back of the Series and make damned sure no one could resurrect it ever again.

Never knew that. I always assumed massive cost overruns. I'm not a huge TV/movie guy, but the sets and props were so detailed and complex, I figured the audience wasn't enough to justify the budget. A decade later, I met lots of people who were just as big a fan as I was. I still think Fox really slit it's own throat killing this show off.

Bit surprised you didn't comment on it -- Kaylee's "goin' on a year now I ain't had nothing 'twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries" line is the way they hint at the total timeline, since the last time she got laid was by the doofus first mechanic right before she was recruited :) puts us at roughly like 4 to 6 months post episode 14 if I recall right

Watching your reaction to the series, and now the movie, has been so strangely rewarding. I feel like I’m introducing someone new to something I have genuine affection for. Every time I watch through the series, I struggle when it ends. Watch the documentary Done the Impossible, we’d love your reactions!

I saw this when it opened. It had the most animated audience I had ever experienced, if they would have played the theme or the ballad of Jayne it would have become a giant sing along. Actually Agents of Shield is a very similar show to firefly, if you watch the pilot of AoS you can really see the parallels to firefly. There is even a few episodes where Shepherd Book makes an appearance (the actor, anyway).

I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, just breezed through all the vids, and I know I'm late to the party, but there's a common theory that Jayne has a crush on Kaylee. It's something you can see when she's shot in the pilot, and he sits outside while she's operated on. Plus all the times he teases her for liking Simon, and so on. I don't believe it's ever confirmed, but I love that little detail.

I was a fan of the tv show, but I found it drawn out like they were planning a five year run without earning the fans, so i was glad when the movie came out when they would only have 2 hours to get to the point.
And the movie is one of the best sci fi movies ever made.
