CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tevye (Topol) and Golde (Norma Crane) grow wistful at their daughter's wedding.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel.

Motels smile at the end just melts my heart. You can tell he has true love for Tzietl. He doesn’t want a woman to just raise the kids and take care of the house. He genuinely loves her. ❤️❤️
GOD bless all and any. In God's Name, Amen.
Did you notice that the bouquet that Tzeitel held were the same wildflowers that Motel picked for her during the 'Miracle of Miracles' scene?
Sunrise sunset
Sadder knowing he died in the og book… (he died form tuberculosis…)
Nowadays hardly any of us stays long enough to find this out.
I love the way Tzeitel clutches that same, simple bunch of lavender that Yosel gave her when they got engaged. It truly captures the depth of their simple, uncomplicated love.
It's these little details that make this movie a true love epic.
Very true.
Seeing Tevyes face 0:54 when Motel puts on the ring always gets me. If it hadn’t occurred that his daughter was now a woman, it did now. Such a beautiful scene. I just finished a high school production of this show at one of the greatest high schools in the country (I was Perchik) and Chaim Topol, had died on our opening night. It was a very emotional show and the memory of Topol will forever live on
@@MissX33 nah I didn’t mean it like that. But from what I know of Jewish culture, marriage is a huge point in their lives and a big point of maturity. I didn’t mean to make it seem like if you don’t marry your not a woman, apologies
No words can express what I feel every time I get back to this Masterpiece inspired by Devine touch...
The high resolution of this clip makes a difference. The actors played their part so beautifully. It makes me cry. I hope I will have such a daughter
As a adult now with a grown child this makes me weep. The days are long but the years are short.
That’s an incredible way to describe the passage of time.
Tzitel's bouquet is the little bunch of flowers Mohtel gave her during Miracle of Miracles
I never noticed that 😭🫶🏽
Whenever I hear this song, it brings a tear to my eye because it carries so much truth. Our children turn overnight, it seems, into adults and life is laden with happiness and tears.
Truth👵🏻🥹👨🏻🦳
When we see raw humanity. Wrinkles. Emotions. Beauty in age.
He looks so genuinely happy, when they scream "mazel toff"
Ooh that final high note on the violin , sensational
Topoľ has past😔His memory be blessed.
I felt terrible for Lazar. Being lonely for so long, then his new bride is taken away at the last minute and given to another man. Tzeitel is much happier with Motel though, so that's a better outcome.
SGTBizarro I didn’t know how the names were spelled so I was like “she’s happier with a motel? What?”
@@windcyclone2 love spell correct

at first I felt bad before I realized that he originally had a wife, he had his time in the sun, he was selfish for thinking he deserved her love anyways.
Nothing is stopping him from taking a bride his age...
One of the most beautiful scenes in cinema history. And one of my all-time faves.
I just read they want to make a remake... why Hollywood? This movie is perfection!
Totally agree!!! HOLLYWOOD LEAVE IT ALONE! Do not mess with the beauty and authenticity of what this original story and movie portrays to us , the viewers.
DO NOT!
They will ruin it the heathens!!
Nooooooooooo
It’s important to remember that good films inspire directors to bring it back to forefront and remind people of how great source material. Will they miss the mark? Probably but I can’t question their motivations. I would love a current version or another bway revival since anti Semitism runs rampant with a lack of positive Jewish representation. I know growing up with this film helped keep me from falling into that pit of hate.
Until today this still remains one of my favorite movies. I chose this song for my daughters wedding and it still brings tears to my eyes. I would love to watch this movie over again but I only have it on VHS and unfortunately I don’t have the video machine anymore
I’m sorry to hear that.
You should get a DVD player and buy the DVD
How I love this, it's so beautiful, brings me to tears.
Yente is crying and thinking "My match made in Heaven is gone!"
😂😂😂
She didn’t get her cut lol
She’s the one who originally says they should be together to the mom then tells her about Lazar I always read her expression as happy for them. But it’s really hard to tell but I like the idea she’s happy for them in heart.😂
I feel like I'm the only one you haven't seen this movie. People keep mentioning it to me, but i always ignore it.. I need to see this movie now....
Yosef, and your opinions now???
Right then.
It’s always nice when childhood friends end up together.
They were also cousins lol
@@TheMamilinda89 Well, that certainly wasn’t mentioned in the film, unless that was something from the original Tevye's Daughters novel.
I love this song so much, I want this to be played at my future wedding
sameee
Yes it's beautiful , touching ,particularly if you have daughters 😊❤
Sunrise Sunset, such a beautiful and moving song. I never get tired of watching Fiddler on the Roof and the beautiful music. Years ago, I saw the play at the FL Tupperware Center, starring Theodore Bikell.
The words are more poignant, of course, these days, with the terrible and brutal war between Israel and Gaza. I prayed to God for peace, in this region. 🙏😢
Tevye reminds me of my old boss Julius segal …he too had a heart of gold and loved his whole family and his friends …yes a very gentle giant …God bless him …
I never noticed the fiddler on the roof in this scene, doh!
no thinking of why it has that name then? :-)
Why not?
Notice your surroundings.
I never noticed the Fiddler sitting up above the canopy, and I've seen this a dozen times!
This song always brings tears to my eyes!!!❤️
Director Norman Jewish, Editors Anthony Gibbs & Robert Lawrence, Cinematographer Oswald Morris and music adaptor John Williams achieve a quiet genius here, taking what is (or could be) an incredibly static scene and imbuing every Fram with energy and emotion (with no small contribution from the actors and extras, of course). So many details: Schprintze and Bielke like statues, the girls on the stairs with the wax of their candles melting on the bannister, the light thrown onto the little boy's face at 2:43, Lazar Wolf's shimmering anger and grief...and so much more.
I love the braided candles!
This song always catches me. Now I'm in tears again.♥️
Przepiękna piosenka cały musical, genialne teksty i muzyka.
Dziękuję i pozdrawiam serdecznie ❤

Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?
I don’t remember growing older
When did they?
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?
Wasn’t it yesterday
When they were small?
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze.
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears.
What words of wisdom can I give them?
How can I help to ease their way?
Now they must learn from one another
Day by day
They look so natural together
Just like two newlyweds should be
Is there a canopy in store for me?

Beautiful it,l
It's what love is all about. Hard to find today. It's all about Capitalism.
We are doing a Fiddler On The Roof play in my middle school! I am playing Motel, this scene is just..
magic!
Good luck!😁
Thank you! But, did you know..
I'm playing Motel as a *6th Grader*
Tzeitel, the person I'm marrying is in *8th Grade*
Shes 2 times taller than me! This is generally scary for me! :(
@@backtosiamul8866 You know what, Tzeitel being taller than Motel kinda fits the story if you think about it🤔
lol, i played motel when i was in middle school 4 years ago
My DNA test told me that I am 4% Jewish. Not much. And yet all of my life their music, the humor, the dances, all of that culture resonates with me so strongly. Perhaps it has a universal appeal. Or perhaps it is simply that underneath the skin we are all the same.
I recognise it as an instrumental, it was played in "The Addams Family Values" when Lurch was playing it on the organ. :)
A beautiful song sung at weddings. 🙏
One of my favourite childhood films. Always make me cry
Surprisingly, I actually first heard of this song in The Lion King 1/2.
Also, really appreciate that this song has different variations for LGBTQ+ weddings.
Edit: Say what you will of Lazar Wolf, he sure is ultimately accepting of all this despite his initial disdain, especially to Tevye. Oh, and he sure has that "Awesome McCoolname".
This movie is so much better than I realized when I first saw it.
How true. It took me many years to appreciate this movie and the scene in particular. Americans of my generation were very cynical when we were young.
R.I.P. Norman Jewison
I married my 2nd cousin, Bob Gelman, of course jewish in jewish Great Neck LI NY. We had a chupah and our cousin, an orthodox rabbi married us. We played this song from Fiddler on the Roof, Sunrise Sunset and the score was in my wedding album
Beautiful!
Laza can marry Yenta!
Yeah why not?
Lazar deserves better
Fiddler on the Roof- what a Masterpiece!
Sometimes I just randomly think of this song and start crying
It's hard not to feel a little bit sorry for Lazer...
I think Jeff Lynne from ELO should remake this song. His voice oozes emotion!
Learning it on my ACCORDION
Rising sun and Adams house by Krantz vs Kramer's. Maureen is meep Krantz. That benchmark nickname for call for action activities
I first heard this song in Lion King 1 1/2 lol
Me too!
People ask me what hauntingly beautiful means. I send them this clip.

Great musical... beautiful song... and Free Palestine!!
Nie chce mi się więcej pisać: ARCYDZIEŁO...(razy miliard)...
The end where Motel breaks the glass is an actual tradition signifying union, it’s not uncommon in Jewish areas when someone breaks glass to hear everyone around them say mazel tov
That’s not what it symbolizes. It symbolizes the destruction of the temple, and you aren’t supposed to clap. It’s supposed to be a bitter reminder, but it’s been misconstrued.
Hello!

a wedding but they all look miserable and like they’re at a funeral
1:21 I resent him
Why? It is their tradition, regardless on how the 21century looks upon older males and younger brides, that is how they were accustomed to.
he was promised by the dad, plus was already highly involved thanks to yente.
He is an older lonly person trying to find love before his time is up, he was kinda backstabbed by a slightly more progessive and yet frowned upon individual.
I feel bad for him. he deserves love to.
The old mule can do his housekeeper. Maybe he did already. She loves him. His butcher money is no good to Tziytel... she loves the tailor. In America he became Calvin Klein. Lol.
Amd the thung is that he was a good man its just that damn age gap
Myvife be Chinese. She would not destroy a perfectly good glass. (Neither would I.)
Why would you? It’s a reminder for Jews of the temple’s destruction.
@@bennywolfe4357 They need a reminder? No. What a waste.
The line: "they look so natural together, just like two newlyweds should be" is very powerful, especially now; today, in these times, when so much has been turned upside down and done in a unholy, un-natural way.
The world needs to take a long hard look at this scene in the movie and realize once again what it defines, depicts, confirms and celebrates.
We need restored order today!!!
We really need help.
