- Today we went back to the Ashlands to reclaim another fortress. Everything went according to plan......(Yeah right) This is the day I almost called it quits in Ashlands. Valheim Ashlands Gameplay Lets Play Season 1 Episode 39.

@@Beardzerkerbrother you do this in one or two attempts if you had just eaten health food hit the body outside got corpse run used bone mass and your spare armour set that actually has armour 😂 could’ve even brought your sword or a bow and fought for 5 mins after you got the spawners
@valkyire35 All this in hindsight, I could've made this a lot easier. I was way to focused on getting that damn staff lol 😅👊
I did this exact thing on my first fort- used the ram to break open a wall. I was playing melee then too. It was a disaster. Immediately got swarmed by 10+ mobs. Chain deaths ensued until I finally was able to take out the spawners. Never again. So much easier to build stairs and launch fire balls from range.
- I see you got smarter near the end and used your spare fire staff... backup gear is your friend. Take a spare weapon at the minimum so you can thin the horde.
- You might benefit from making a few extra staves :)
- Run less... you can pulse the sprint instead of holding it down. You'll find you can walk quite a bit during combat.
- It's difficult to outrun the Valkyrie, it's better to try to hide behind obstacles. Even better yet, don't run away, fight it. Pop a fire potion. Dodge roll the spin and claw attacks. Can use the vines but need to stick close to them. The Ice staff works well. The Valkyrie will quickly kill the surrounding mobs if you kite them to it.
@friarjon7948 Yeah man, building your way in is the way to go for sure. I don't know what I was thinking....literally gear and a stave I could have been using the whole time. Live and learn I suppose. Lol

Quick tip: you can roll to unhook yourself from the ram + carts.
You can mine under the tower in the middle of the fortress if you ain't got the ram, and then jump upwards.

Though it is pretty entertaining to see you failing miserably :D, i have a tip for you: bonemass power with good armor and 2 meals that give most hp + one meal that give most stamina, let's you tank pretty much anything that is less than 2 stars. Equip mistwalker sword to slow down enemy attacks and you can clear fortress with little risk, maybe have one big healing potion ready to be used. Remember to equip that cape that gives +10 armor at base level.
@Deithv Bonemass could be a good way to go. Problem with using 2 hp and one stam is I have no eitr. I was wanting to go melee here but that didn't work out too well, lol. Once I get my armor maxed I plan onntrying out some of the new melee weapons. That's cape seems awesome but I can't seem to pull away from the feather cape with the increase to jump height and no fall damage. Another fortress or two and I'm gonna give it a whirl.

Dude, staff of the wild is great, but I think you're relying on it a bit much, use along with the skeles to take the agro, bubbles, then go melee. Get the arbalest for the Valkries, and get rid of them first. Sheesh, that was hard to watch, lol, great stream, cheers eh
@SeamusDunmaggotin You're 100% correct man, relying too much on one thing is terrible, especially when I called it out in the beginning and never switched tactics, lol. I'm gonna start making use of the arbalest. That was one time I almost stopped before I finished, Thanks man👊✌️🖖
Agreed. Staff of the Wild is amazing, but it's use is situational. It requires you to stick close to the vines for them do to damage. So if you're running away and mobs are following you the vines do little to no damage as the mobs immediately travel out of range. The fire staff is much better at "run and gun" due to it's quick cast time and knockback. The ice staff will do more damage if you have the luxury of standing nearly still to channel it. It's better for a spellcaster to use many staves and switch between them on the fly as appropriate.
@friarjon7948 Yeah man, that was my main issue. Relying too much on 1 staff, we'll see how I go about a new strategy. I tend to just panic and then all hell breaks loose 😆👊👊
Props to you, that number of deaths would have left most people sobbing in a corner. You mentioned that you had additional jade gems, so it might have been easier to make another staff of the wild and clear out some of the charred from range.
Askvin are just nasty. A one-star askvin is scarier than a Valkyrie in my opinion.
Oh yes - and breaking down the door rather than using stairs like a siege tower? That was a bad call.
I know it is painful for you at the time, but man, that was hilarious to watch.

@@Beardzerker I accidentally made another staff of protection instead of upgrading it, but have now placed that in my Death Run Kit (along with a full set of Ask armour and a bow) ... just in case.

@@Beardzerker Would you still think that if I told you I got killed THREE TIMES by a "Skeleton Surprise" raid because I accidentally left open the gate to my dock and was pottering around my base with low health. It certainly was a surprise when a dozen appeared in the room I was in.

Best strategy I found was to build a stair to over wall, then use the ram to bust door. As they all run towards door, run up steps and take out spanners and rain he'll from above. 2 attempts like this. One went smmoth. No deaths. Other one I fell off wall and got into a death loop. Next, I think I'm just smack door once or twice without breaking door, the go up steps

hahaha oh the death loops... such a familiar situation. How's your health? Did you find some way to calm down after that? I'm sure you know the game, but I'll suggest: turn off "auto-pickup" (V on the keyboard) when you're doing body retrieval

I just defeated the Fader in my world and I died only 3 times, it was very long and I had to concentrate for an hour straight to win. It took only 102 in-game days ti fully complete ashlands

Man, as nice as the mod is to give you more inventory space and separate your gear from your inventory, when it creates 2 death markers that you have to pick up separately, that sucks for body recovery. Also, one thing I do in the body recovery process is hit the key for turning off auto pick up. That way, I won't pick up random stones on the way, which will prevent me from getting everything in the death marker when it's full of inventory.
I think all the people who are claiming mage is the way to go for the Ashlands, play in groups. Solo mage almost seems impossible. Hell, solo anything almost seems impossible, being that my melee only attempts haven't been great. I'd like to see how the super skilled solo players make their way around and what they use, but I haven't seen much content for that. Mostly groups of people playing.
I have the exact opposite issue you're having. I have a few blood stones, which I can't use, but I can't seem to get a single green stone to make the Staff of the Wild. I've hit 3 fortresses and come up with nothing. I also think using the troll staff outside of the fortress might cause some issues. I tried that on my last fortress, which destroyed the spawners, but I think the trolls destroyed the chest and the loot despawned after I took a few days to actually get into the fortress. I could be wrong tho. I guess I just have terrible RNG to clear a fortress and not get 1 gem out of it.
@mitmon_8538 Ya know I was thinking the same thing about the mod, I may have to switch it out for a bigger backpack or something or just suck it up and play vanilla inventory. Solo, like you said seems incredibly difficult. I'd like to say I'm making progress but.....ya know lol
RNG gods are not in your favor ehh? I don't think it despawns but I could be wrong. I only saw 1 chest in this fortress but after going back and getting my stuff a dew in game days later I found a few more green gems on the ground. Here's to better luck for ya👊✌️✌️
I used hybrid mage (flametal Helm) and had great success solo, went night only for a couple days to tame 2 star asksvin deathless. But you need to overprepare: always 4 skeletons, always bubble up, use vines and fireballs for groups, melee kills faster single targets (only exception being morgen which I use dundr and valkyrie which I use staff of fracturing)
