I was there back when this was in the arcade, I used to play it at lot and 10 out of my friend im the only one who can play it...
About the hidden modes, and other difficulties, there's a manual laying around the arcade that says it, although it depends on what kind of arcade shop it is since some doesnt even place the manual next to the cabinet (it's a printed manual so yeah).
Also as a music producer and loves synths, I understand why the game only released 20-30 songs back then, the way the game was made is just too much for programmers to handle, for example placing all of the key sounds in every notes of those song, and they also need to sample those note one by one from the synthesizer that was used back then so it was really a pain in the butt just to implement it on a song...So if you compare it to beatmania 2DX 7 keys that's quite a lot of job... not to mention Playstation 2 has 2mb of sound memory... although I bet arcade has more but im sure they need to compensate it for the console release for later on (I just cannot imagine how much job those synth sampling one by one went in to from a music producer stand point lol)

it's actually not that hard to program.
keyboard mania arcade has a built-in Yamaha MU100 sound module,so you can use the built-in sounds for keysounds.

IIDX has the hardest difficulty curve out of any modern rhythm game (imo at least), so now just imagining literally triple or SEXTUPLE the keys is absolutely insane.

2:41, iirc, this could have been due to a Korean gaming law from the time regarding depictions of japanese...well, anything in Korean games. Things like Capcom's Jojo fighter had _all_ spoken japanese dialogue removed, leaving only grunts or shouts. Soul Edge (the precursor to Soulcalibur) had the character Mitsurugi, a samurai, completely replaced by a Korean swordsman, Hwang. Then right after, Soulcalibur sort of kept Mitsurugi, but made him a blond, European samurai named Arthur.

Wasn't Hwang already in all versions of Soul Edge?

@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN Nope. He was only made a separate character in the games first version update

The Korean release missing original songs are likely songs with Japanese vocals. This was common at the time as South Korea was still heavily censoring Japanese media including removing the language where possible. I guess the word mania was also frowned upon seeing how many games had "mania" in the title and then changed for Korean release.

Oh right, the PC version of Nostalgia is getting a Keyboardmania mode added to it sometime soon, since you can play that version with a MIDI keyboard, it makes sense to add a mode using white and black keys.

This is probably my favourite of all the dead BEMANI games. Playing with what is essentially a real keyboard feels so satisfying when you nail tough sections, and a lot of the original songs are great.

I was just at a video game convention called Magfest 2024, and they had an entire arcade hall full of Japanese rhythm games. While everyone was hogging up Mai Mai and Chunithm, I found an empty Keyboard Mania 2 and 3 machine.
First impressions wise: the game was BRUTAL.
Even on light mode, it was extremely difficult trying to keep up with the notes. After a few hours of practice though, at max I could make a C rank with a few games. Glad to see I wasn't the only person who thought this game was ridiculously brutal because i would see people walk up to the cabinet next to me and people would just stop after a few minutes into a song

Interesting that you only mention Nostalgia, the official spiritual successor, and never bring up Synthesia, which is also a more modern spiritual successor (though not intentionally) because it's interesting to compare their differing philosophy on a modern take, as Nostalgia focuses on being more of a simple rhythm game than Keyboardmania while Synthesia focuses even more on being like a piano - they both went in opposite directions compared to Keyboardmania's slightly more middle ground approach.
