  • Sitting with legs crossed is one of the most comfortable positions to sit in for many people.
Some sit with both legs crossed (criss cross applesauce), some sit with one knee over the other knee, and others cross their ankle over their knee.
Some even sit with an ankle under their other thigh.
All of these positions add more bend to the knee joint and can potentially cause problems for those with chondromalacia patella.
In this video, Dr. David answers the question, "Is it good to sit cross legged with chondromalacia patella knee pain?"

I would assume this applies to tucking one leg under me when I sit down? I’m short and have always sat like that to prevent me from sliding off furniture. I doesn’t hurt at all, but I now have bad pain in one knee when bearing weight with it in a bent position and was diagnosed with chondromalacia in both knees. Your videos have helped.

Hi Hadia, we wouldn't be able to say for certain without a proper evaluation but what it sounds like you are dealing with is crepitus. It is very common and it can go away but not always. Generally, it is not a cause for concern unless you are feeling pain. We have a video that discusses it that you might find helpful. You can access it here: “Why are my knees crunchy? | Cause of Knee Crepitus | Knee pain & Cartilage Problems”

We hope you found this information helpful. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!
