    After listening seriously to Prince's musicality across all genres of music, especially after his death, it is Brutally Obvious that the Piano is Prince's "Home" Instrument. There is no emotion that Prince cannot convey thru those 88 keys. Prince's Piano Skills, for a self-taught guy, are absolutely Remarkable. Plus, the fact that Prince took that 88 Piano Keys Mastery and translated all of it onto the Guitar and onto the Drums and even onto his own Voice....is simply Majestically Magical.
    Michael's talent and ability is a completely different Beast than Prince's ability and talent. Neither is Greater Than nor Less Than the other. They are simply, Different.

      Prince grew up in an environment that was conducive to him learning how to Master playing that piano.
      Then he Mastered the Guitar, he Mastered the Bass Guitar, he Mastered the Drum Set, he Mastered Electronic Drum Programming, he Mastered Music Arranging, he Mastered Using Your Voice As A Musical Instrument, he Mastered Multi-Track Audio Recording and Mixing....His daddy did not teach Prince any of that. Prince just picked all that up along the way. Notice that i didn't mention that Prince mastered the art of Stage Performance and Dance...but he mastered that too. Prince is a much, much better guitar player than a pianist. There is no argument at all. Prince is an accomplished piano player. He has his own style and he has a reasonable level of technical ability. He got further on the piano than most people who take up the instrument but he was much more talented. He is a very good piano player by normal standards. On the guitar, Prince was amongst the best players in the history of popular music. As a pianist, he might be one of the better players but he is light years behind the best players.

    I agree that Prince didnt have the same vocabulary on piano that Herbie had. Prince dedicated his time to more instruments/production, vocals, etc, while Herbie was a piano specialist. Be mindful of writing checks you can’t cash. Although, this is the internet 😂. There was the time MJ composed string parts for an unreleased classical piece on piano. Another was during the “Dangerous”sessions with Teddy Riley. One more was during the “Man In the Mirror” sessions with the Winans. Many of the riffs, horn lines, bass lines and keyboard parts were “surprisingly” penned by this “non-musician” some lazy music snobs tend to dismiss as a simple performer. Do your homework. Never stop learning.

      Be mindful of writing checks you can’t cash? LOL! Did MJ play air guitar on the "Dangerous" album as well? MJ could sing pretty good when he was young before he started to make those little squeaking noises between each line of the verses. MJ could do a handful of impressive dance moves (e.g. moonwalk), but other than that, he would just kick his leg up sideways and grab his crotch. MJ would eventually just lip-sync all of his vocals on tour, fake kiss his fake wife on TV, pretend like he actually had sex with the so-called mother of his kids when he wasn't dangling them over a balcony several stories high, and don't even get me started on the freak show that became his face. Q: You know what MJ considered to be a perfect 10? A: 2 five-year-olds. Face it, if MJ wasn't famous when he was alive, he would have been locked up in a mental institution, or worse.

    Quincy J is unmistakably a master at music scoring, writing, production, conducting, you name it. He has done it all and seen it all, and in terms of talent, he has worked with absolute legendary artist' in the music and film arena. Q has covered all the basis, so his purview is not easily shrugged off or dismissed. Quincy was there as most aspects of modern music evolution occurred for seven decades. Quincy Jones has a front row seat as to the impact of music and its impact on cultures world wide. He has seen it, experienced it, contributed to it and shared in it. He is a historical figure without question. His perspective far exceeds him just being a mere hater. This opinion piece on Prince runs a bit deeper than that. Q's objection to Prince's chops might center around the reality that Mr. Nelson rose to prominence outside of the Q orbit and "gate-keeper" status. Prince never "bent the knee" (no pun intended) when it came to the industry gate keepers of that era. This video is not the first time Quincy went at Prince. So, to cut to the chase, Prince got major respect from multiple corners of the music industry and in all genre's and approaches to the art of music. Jazz legends, Orchestral Conductors, Composer's, legendary Rock stars, Country stars, R&B legends, Hip Hop stars, Instrumentalist, Musicologist, Music Executives, Music Supervisor's and Pop Cultural historians revered Mr. P's skills as a musician, writer, producer and performer. Again, Q's issue likely has more to do with Prince going out of his way to shrug off the (Q.Jones circle) of gate keepers, and P. refusing to be validated in those circles of influence. Prince was a rebel. He had to be raw when it came to pushing up through the rank and file politics of that era and he refused to play their specific game. Q. was familiar with Prince well before the "We Are the World" era, even before the "Thriller and Purple Rain" era's, as was Miles Davis, Sly Stone and others. In closing, Quincy worked with people that were nowhere close to Prince's talent yet, he was far less dismissive of those creators so his comments on Prince reek of a more deep seated perspective towards Mr. Nelson. "Just sayin."

      Please. I really don’t think prince is in the same category as these classical masters. His playing is not solid at all. If you listen carefully, he’s not listening carefully and singing every note and his finger tip technique and wrist technique is not there to produce that kind of tone and sensitivity of colors and counterpoint. And the intensity between notes are lacking. But I still love him to death. I’m saying this as a pianist at New England conservatory. Just listen to pianists like Horowitz, Rubinstein, Herbie Hancock and you will know what I’m talking about.

    • @garethharrison5797

      Prince is a very good piano player by any normal standards. He is not remotely near any of those people on the piano. Even the weakest players on that list are many, many times better than Prince. The only players on that list that were arguably not technical monsters are Miles Davis - a trumpet player - and he is not revered for being a technical monster like the likes of Charlie Parker - he is revered for his unchallenged lyrically beautiful playing and as an innovator and band leader. Mikes Davis is one of the most respected musicians of the 20th Century for that reason. Herbie Hancock is also arguably not an ATG virtuoso but he is almost certainly significantly better on the piano than Prince is on the guitar, nevermind the piano. That list contains some of the greatest virtuoso players that have ever lived. As much as I love Prince, he is not one of the greatest virtuoso players that has ever lived on any instrument, let alone one of the great pianists. The gap between the world of Pop and the world of Jazz and then the world of Classical is absolutely astronomical. Players like Beethoven, and, especially in his day, Bach, were world famous at a time when the gene pool for musicians was enormous. If you had money you played from a young age. Comparing Pop musicians and those worlds is impossible- they are entirely different, but in terms of technical ability, the skill levels are night and day.

      QUINCY, however, threw shade at both of them. After Mike refused to do another album with him after Bad, Quincy called him Machiavellian and said he “stole” music. And then turned around and shit talked prince because prince DIDN’T care to work with him either. Thus leaving Quincy as hater. He’d never be prince or MJ.

    Just found this, so, I remember the Q interview dating as far back as 1988, but not this critique, or really, badmouthing of Prince's piano playing, this is additional unseen footage. Very interesting. Q obviously had it in for Prince since the We Are The World lack of participation by Prince. Later you see Prince on stage NOT singing along with We Are The World in 1995 American Music Awards which may show up on the right video suggestions. This is rather messed up that Q said this about Prince when clearly Prince's playing is marvelous, I'm pointing out the obvious I know! Thank you for sharing this and the other amazing Prince footage. I can only imagine what the 1991 film with Troy Bayer has in terms of cutting room floor material, would be wonderful to see in a super deluxe Diamonds & Pearls album and or 'Love Symbol' 1992 super deluxe!

    Wow, I really wish that I never saw this video because I have lost ALL respect for Quincy as a musician. Prince did things that we still don’t understand. That man could take a Pop sound and mix it with an orchestral sound and mix that with jazz and just make this musical collage, if you will. And it all worked sonically together effortlessly. I mean just listen to the “Around The World In A Day” album, “Hypnoparadise” or what I consider to be his greatest effort “Lovesexy” and it disproves everything that came out of his mouth. He’s probably incredibly jealous of Prince’s mammoth talent over his own AND over his pet MJ, or he is the king of ALL hating MJ fans who believe that in order to love Michael you must cast dispersions on Prince. I don’t know why people were hell-bent on pitting MJ and Prince against one another when there was NEVER any public rivalry. That would have been a legendary rivalry that the public could only dream of so the fans created that atmosphere amongst themselves, but that was NEVER the case with Prince and MJ contrary to popular belief. I know people wanted that rivalry more than they wanted their next breath, but it’s just one of those things that never was, will be or COULD have been! I love Michael dearly, but when it comes to musicianship, originality and overall talent; Prince takes the cake every single time against ANYONE! And that’s just the way it is. He IS the best and always will be. I had so much respect for Quincy but I have come to the conclusion that he is a complete and total jealous IDIOT! I mean, he arranged some of the greatest albums of all time and even arranged for Sinatra with Count Basie’s Orchastra in the “Sinatra At The Sands” album, one of the top 10 live albums of Sinatra’s incomparable live album collection. But I just can’t after this. I’m an aspiring artist and I always thought it would be cool if I had the privilege of having a record produced and arranged by Quincy. But after hearing this, pardon my French, Quincy cain’t do SHIT for me!
    “Like an Eskimo, Chill. It’s all good. Peace & B WILD!”

      PurpleRain500 PurpleRain500 you do know that quincy attacks Jackson as well right?? Also it's funny that you claim originality when Prince was a mix of rick James and James Brown together down from the songs to the moves to the overall image. Jackson came first (in the 60s), not the other way around, Jackson paved the way for Prince (not the other way around) and please Off he wall was released in 1979. It's better and much more influential than anything Prince has ever released sonically wise.

    • @PurpleRain500
      @PurpleRain500 6 лет назад +5

      hello You sound SO ignorant. Michael was great, but he did not “Pave the Way” for Prince. First of all, when Prince hit the scene Michael hadn’t EVEN broken away from The Jacksons yet; while you think you know everything. Let’s keep it straight. And secondly, you can’t compare “Off The Wall” to ANYTHING that Prince did. First off it wasn’t even Michael’s best album, and secondly it was a run-of-the-mill Disco album with really great songs; but it CANNOT be compared to any of the Prince works that I mentioned or any of his material for that matter. Michael was incredible, but Prince was in an entire class of his own musically and creatively. If you knew anything else about Prince besides “Purple Rain” and his “Greatest Hits” then you’d understand where I’m coming from and the limitless depths of his creativity. But judging by the asinine comment you just wrote, I know that his work is far above your head. Go listen to “Off The Wall” and leave The Artist to those intelligent enough to comprehend his work.

      ijcn0jir3nvjn3fjcifn I agree. And like you said the tours that Prince did were really something, I consider his 1988 “Lovesexy” tour to be the greatest tour of all time from what I feel is the greatest album of all time. And you are so right, Prince was on MTV before Michael. And Michael did have some great records after “Bad” in ‘87 such as 1992’s “Dangerous,” 1995’s “HIStory: Past, Present and Future” and 2001’s “Invincible.” Those were all genius records, but nothing ever topped or matched Prince, period.

    The end result balances itself out. In the end P's artistic contribution cemented his space as worthy of consideration. The body of work outpaces all of Q's argument or disdain towards "P". The imprint of Prince is not up for debate especially considering that his massive success occurred in the very apex of both MJ & Q's biggest career achievements. "Thriller" was bigger than everything in recorded history at that time or now and that was Quincy, the amazing team of musicians, sound recording engineers and of course Michael J. Nothing in terms of success has truly compared to Thriller since then. Considering the magnitude of that project, "Prince" in the very middle of the "Thriller" period delivered a huge success of his own and absolutely change the conversation on the music world stage. He did it without the "Q" blueprint, involvement or approval. The rebuttals aimed at P's talent, suggest that there is something else going on, perhaps a personal dislike maybe. With that said, Prince as a pianist alone is a moot point and comparing him to any of modern jazz greats is nothing more than a cheap shot.
