Used to order quite a lot of Carhartt and Lapco gear and have it shipped to the UK excellent service and always came with Cajun sauce mixes chucked in for free.
THANK you, Austin!I have to watch this a few more times before I comment. I wonder if you realize just how valuable you opinion and willingness to cover these subjects are... ? Can't thank you enough. Going to try to find a way to send $$$ your way soon as posible. Invaluable content, Austin.
My favorite is the huntsman with the sliding up and down lense. Full flat front. Only thing is the top is super long. Really like the ultralight plastic vs the paper.
Man I love my huntsman hoods. I have the one you're talking about with the little lever on top, and also a flip front style. Wish I could find more parts for them, I need new headgear.
Interesting. I'm an Ironworker by trade and almost all of us want the biggest lens we can get because we almost alway weld in weird positions and need to be able to see. Plus we are required to wear a hardhat with our welding hood. Me and most the guys I work with use a Jackson hood with a 4.5 by 5.5 inch number 10 gold lens. If for some reason it blows off my head and falls 100+ feet I won't cry because I can get a new one with a new lens for about $60.
If you work in a shop, auto dark is the way to go. A lot of strain and injury to welders is in the neck from flipping hoods down all the time. Autos let you keep working without the need to do that. Even now they are coming out with crystal clear ones that give you better sight when the hood isn't active, as well as a clear view without the dark green color. Working rigs and lines in the bush you've gotta go fixed, don't have time to mess about if the batteries go dead, or if something happens to the auto dark mechanism. Though I would take the pancake over the the fat boy any day just for how light it is, and when you're just burnin rod not stop on a pipe you don't want some heavy hood.
I fab big electrical enclosure buildings in a shop. When we are framing them I am on ladders 10ft and stuff like that. Overhead, horizontal, vert. I have always used a pipeliner with the flip up lens part so you can grind with it on too. I personally use it I guess because I've been using it since I started and am just good with IT. But trust me..I get the neck thing..very good point.
@@mathewmccauley6965 I just bought a pipeliner with the flip front and have some questions .... do you see double weld puddles. how heavy is the pipeliner. do you have an AD lense in your pipeliner , do you tig weld with yours if so what shade do you use?
Need to get a sugar scoop I was walking the local flea market and found a Miller POW/MIA Helmet for $100, quick got around the people and purchased it before anyone else got it.. lucky buy
I was wondering what the main differences are? Like why does pipeline welders use a pancake instead of a sugar scoop stuff like that. I'm not a pipeline welder so I have always wondered why.
Edward Ramirez pancakes are good for pipe liners because thy are out of position on every weld beckus it’s a pipe and there just a little easier to move around in and are a-lot closer to your face than a normal hood and they block out light from behind you so you don’t get glare
Alot of guys use the pancake hood because they dont let light in from behind, but I use modified sugar scoops/ pipeliner hoods. Mine has a flip front and I cut the top half off and replaced it with leather as well as the bottom half of the hood and I did that to reduce backlight with my hood on a hard hat and so I can fit my head in very small spaces.
My local pipefitters uses pancakes and pipeliners(sugar scoops). Just bought a leather pipeliner. Super lightweight. Outlaw welding. Made in the U.S of freakin' A
Will I look stupid if I wore a pancake in my shop/school? Our booths have shiny tops with lights and I’m tired of looking at myself. Also the cold with the fogging up.
Have you tried the Original brand pancakes? They are about half priced of the others. And I really like the rolled edge so nothing can catch on it. Plus you CAN get it in the smaller "old" size although it is not OSHA approved.
I love my Wendy’s hood....I have quite a few with the flip box and can’t see myself using anything else since getting rid of that horrible sugar scoop that I used for the first 20 years of my pipeline career! Lol
Glasses...no matter what, by your mid-40's you're likely to need 'reading' glasses....And...I just found your channel today...thanks for not being so arrogant like many pipe-liners...I'm 71 as of July 4th....been around all kinds of welders...I have/had a Nephew who died in 2017, Memorial Day..., he was 29 and already so arrogant he had trouble getting jobs..his reputation was way ahead of him...and yes, he was doing pipe-line...
My pipe instructor used broken portaband blades and Sharpies to mark new Fibre-Metal Pipeliners for cutting for increased chin tuck and on top for neck clearance in close areas. Fast and easy then slice with a zip disk.
Im having trouble with finding those safety glasses you talked about that could fit under pancake hoods, do you mind telling me what you looked up for that?
Sam Wall yes he typically is for right now. You can message him if you are really interested and he will put you on the list or be able to give you a better time frame. Austin will talk more about that in his review video for that hood. Should be out two weeks from now. 👍🏻
Used to use a pipeliner for everything myself, fitted a flipup from a protoshell to it so could use it for grinding, feathering tacks etc. Can't stand auto lenses, theyre crp imho Airfed ESAB G40 now, all the way. Steve Fenton passed away in 2015. I just got a tig welder, and I am adding gas to my lincoln mig. I also just picked up a plasma cutter. I've been looking for suggestions on a hood - I've been using cheap harbor freight and local welding supply hoods (less than $100). I am having problems seeing what I am typing right now, thanks to one of those hoods. I've been told to look at an optrel, a lincoln viking, and most recently a pipe fitter told me I need to get a Wendy's pancake with an eagle vision auto darkening lens. I just need to see what I'm doing. Do you have a suggestion for the best visibility of my arc? I really don't have a bunch of money to dump into a helmet at the moment due to dropping several thousands of dollars on welders, cutters, gas cylinders, consumables, etc. That wendy's hood is looking pretty good at $150 (with the lens), but I have never used a pancake. I will be mainly tig and mig welding. I really enjoy your content and the way you present info. Thanks for the effort you put into your channel.
Uncle Red I work in a shipyard that has a lot of outside welding and I bought a pancake for a backup and I’m hard pressed to go back not having light coming in the back of the helmet or hood is a huge difference
I fab all day flat decks, roll offs the what not just mig usually but i use a miller elite and im finding the shops got to much natural light and im getting that crazy see your self reflection while in the middle of welding especially sucks think a pancake or another would help me ?
I’m using a Lincoln electric 725s series. It was roughly $160 new. At the moment I’m still going through welding school. Been wanting to buy a second helmet got any recommendations? Don’t yet know what field I want to get into.
dodgedakota 89 I'm personally an iron worker by trade if your in votech still just get a Hobart auto darkening helmet at TSC it's what I used for a long time and it served fine
I bought a sugar scoop and it hurts my eyes with any kind of lens I use. Auto darkening, shade 10-12. I can feel it in the back of my eyes for some reason. Any idea why?
That arc is prob gettin in from underneath. Your eyes might get used to it eventually. If not, then you could get a pancake, this would eliminate any arc from getting in.
Any chance u have light colored eyes? wear good quality uv rated safety glasses under the hood. I have light blue eyes and i find im more sensitive to it. I wear good safety glasses under my hood that are uv rated it keeps my eyes from hurting and saves you from the effects of getting flashed around other welders. I also always keep a pair of the shade 5 hobart glasses close at hand if im close to other people welding, especially indoors. Also make sure u arent using a shade that is too dark. I find if my hood is too dark i get eye strain from trying to see what im doing.
And those hoods are all auto darkening? And is it true you should switch out the lenses every so often when you work, like after a certain amount of hours?
Every pancake hood I’ve ever bought have not came with a lens. You have to buy those separately. But yes I use auto darkening lens. Singles is the brand I use. I usually get a couple years or more out of one. What you may have heard about changing the lens was most likely the clear lens. They are to protect the actual auto darkening lens. One goes on the outside and one goes on the inside.
I'm struggling to work out the benefit of these pancake hoods. They seem popular with pipeline guys so there must be something, I just can't work out what it is.
Austin Ross that is a very fair point, it is very annoying to get sun glare from behind, on the rare occasion I weld outside. I guess they were originally just modified oxy goggles

taz200032 auto darkening is quality of life, if it’s sensitive enough to react to light from the sun it’s just like having a normal one

why do you us a pan cake welding hood instead of a "regular" hood similar to the sugar scoop?
