You really ought to check out Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope. Incredible composition, incredible musicianship. The song is so complex that it was a featured part of the Compositions coursework at the Sydney Conservatorium for Music.
This song came out when I was in my early 20, and struggling with deep depression... It became my go-to song for those times when I was laid low, as the lyrics gave me a sense of hope, a hope that what I was going through was part of my process of healing. The phrase "stepping through my Shadow" became a kind of mantra for me in those dark times. I'm happy to say that I came out the other side, and this song - along with many other Tool songs - was a big part of the reason why... and not just because of the songs and subject matter, but because their music pushed me to explore other ways to help myself. I read Jung because of this song, and I eventually started practicing Buddhism as part of that journey of healing I found myself on. I've been free from depression for about 10 years now, and I'm not sure if I would ever have been able to say that, if not for the music of Tool.
The first listen to any Tool song can be slightly uncomfortable or confusing. However, upon the 2nd to 5th listen it all begins to make sense and becomes beautiful. This especially happened to me with Lateralus and later albums. The more complex they got the more I was not entirely sure about a song on the first listen. By the time you get to that 5th listen, it digs into your soul and massages it. :D
I would from the bottom of my heart like to thank you. You noticed something that is lost on a lot of casual music listeners (obviously you're not) when they encounter Tool. The thing is...they aren't meant to be "listened" to per say. Tool is meant to be "experienced". Sure, you can stay surface level all day with any Tool song in the background and treat it no differently then a Lady Gaga song. But if you let yourself up to being vulnerable, and really open wide and suck it in, the music will absolutely remove you from the present and take you on an amazing journey. I beg of you, please do more Tool. Their later albums will even further blow you away. Absolute trips are: Lost Keys (crossfading into -->)Rosetta Stoned Right In Two (This one makes me cry, but thats normal for me) Descending Lateralus (kinda a must) And literally so much more. Additionally I'd like to say your score was fair, honest and well articulated. In the early 2000's I probably would have regarded this as utter heresy, but this video was so fucking well done on both your parts. I'm hooked, man.

I usually know the songs of the videos that I watch on this channel very well. And I have to say that I almost always agree with the objectively rated nzmbers you give out. So keep it up!
You should absolutely check out TOOL's live version of their song, "Pushit," from the Salival album. It contains everything that TOOL does best - a beautiful slow build up to multiple crescendos (3 to be exact), huge drum and bass, crazy guitar, spooky background sounds, and Maynard puts on a fucking vocal clinic with an enormous solo moment. It is 100% a monster of a song performance.
❤ the objectivity here. One thing Maynard does often and during this song is finish sentences at the start of each measure. Then emphasizes that word/note. Like, mini vocal drops. Feel that carries an extra oomph to keep the momentum going. Still waiting for that Michael Jackson/Prince throwdown. Beat It vs. Let's Go Crazy? Breakout battle? Rock With You vs. I Wanna Be Your Lover? B-side battle? Let the debate begin. Maybe release it on a bootleg cassette tape instead of RUclips? 🤩
Redundant vs repetitive....its a very fine line. Tool are masters at knowing when to entrench themselves in a pattern, and not only when but how to disrupt that pattern. In very unexpected ways and times. Permutations and evolutions. They also make elegant music...complexity from simplicity.
At about 10:00, you suggested the band evolved a great deal from Undertow to this song/album. I saw an interview in which I remember Justin Chancellor saying he wrote the bass riff for this song waiting for a flight to LA to try out for the band to replace the original bassist, Paul D'Amour.
Studio versions, yes. :P The live performance of Sober is good because the physicality really plays into the song, so I do recommend that one (though I think you heard it already)

I am relatively new to music theory, but this is one of the songs I've dissected a bit and came to believe it was in the key of D Phrygian dominant (rather than Dm), which would explain the presence of the F#. Have I been thinking about this incorrectly?
You speak of how much growth and maturity this album shows compared to their earlier work. You should listen to Fear Inoculum. It's phenomenal. If forced to chose, I'd go with "Pneuma" being the best (Danny Cary is the King of his craft, always, but in Pneuma he defies human ability), but every song on the album is an utter masterpiece. Fear Inoculum is Tool's magnum opus and it's beautifully glorious.
It's cool that you mentioned Maynard's vocals were like an instrument since, as you know, the vocal chords (voice) is an instrument and is how I listen to music, I love the voice for notes and placement in songs but I absolutely don't listen to the lyrics just the way they are sung. Yes, I am a musician and I like to read the lyrics later to give them and their meaning a appreciation as I will a novel but listening to the words and understanding what the artist is trying to get across would interfere with fully analyzing what the instruments are "saying" through the composition.😊 Great job as usual breaking down this track, love your channel 👍👌🤌
You mention the evolution from Undertow to this. A huge part of that was Justin Chancellor joining the band on bass. That is what allowed them to really spread their wings progressively. Pauk D'Amour is a good bassist, but he never really wanted to play bass, and Chancellor is composotional monster.
Just saw them perform this last night in Sacramento. My jaw dropped. Well, to be fair, with every track that they played as well. Pushit, The Pot, Aenima, Swamp Song... and of course, Pneuma. Thank you Tool for being a part of Aftershock. 🤘👊🌀 Edit: I suggest Devin Townsend in any way shape or form. But either his EMG performance of Kingdom or his Quarantine performance of Why for charity would do!
Since you just did this. I have a recommendation for the same song again, but performed by the O'Keefe music foundation. A music foundation for kids aged 6-18... their version is fantastic
Keep going down the Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer rabbit hole. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with their art. I listen to Tool as a tool to help me with my shadow work and individuation. You should check out Pneuma next.
This song and right n two have similar Bridges and guitar and drum bass solos toward the end. Almost sounds like a frenzy it's pretty kewl. Also they start slow then pick up gradually and then the Symphony.
I totally understand the technical aspects of your breakdown, but as a whole there's just something about this song that grabs me every time and makes it an all time great for me. I think a lot of what make Tool great is Danny Carey's percussion. He's a master percussionist and one of the greatest drummers to ever do it. I think Tool understands this very well and are very good at playing to this strength.
I enjoy many genres of music including r&b, rap, bluesy soul, bluegrass, classic rock, folk, grunge, prog and tons of other stuff. Whatever makes me feel things. Not a big metal guy. But somehow these guys captured my soul at around 17 and I first saw them at 18 in 98 and that show literally changed me and my perception of all music and what I thought it could mean to me. They are by far my favorite band and I don’t think they even fit into a genre due to their unparalleled originality. The only band that rivals in originality and the ability to give me eargasms in my humble opinion is Radiohead. And they’re nothing like Tool. Obviously I’m a victim of the 90’s and when I grew up as far as my tastes go. But I take comfort in the fact that the 2 bands that I chose as favorites in my late teens are still making relevant music that I love and still giving us head scratchers. With all the social and political decay going on around us, these kind of guys and their commitment to art still give me hope. Good reaction. That is all. ✌️
There's so much difference in such a short time compared to Undertow for a very specific reason. On the one hand their growth as artists because they now had a career underway and could dedicate themselves to music full time, but above all the arrival of Justin on bass. Paul was a good bass player, but he was fine for a more conventional band. Justin is an underrated genius in my opinion in terms of composition and creativity. It's as if his arrival removed the handbrake from the other members of the band and allowed TOOL to become TOOL instead of one of the grunge / alternative metal bands of the 90s
Unpopular opinion: I love Tool, but I think 46&2 is their most overrated song. Not because it isn’t a great song, but because it’s one of the top 3 reacted to Tool songs, but I don’t even think it’s one of their top 10 (or even top 15) songs. To me, the top 5 are (in no particular order), The Grudge, Lateralus, Pushit, Vicarious, and Pneuma (honorable mention to Descending).
I don't know how you feel about cover bands but there is a band that toured with Tool and they cover Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden, they're called Brass Against, and all of their covers are done with brass instruments and they are exceptional musicians and the vocalist is a force of nature named Sophia Urista, it's fresh, it's different and it kicks all forms of ass

Tool had a new sound producer moving from undertow to Anema and the next three Albums. Their latest, they changed producer. Honestly it's missing the touch that David Bottrill help fill with their previous albums.

A Tool track that I dig but rarely go for when I want to listen to Tool. My biggest problem with their first two albums is the production. I simply don't dig the mix. Probably with much better production, I would have grabbed on to Tool quicker than I did ( back in the 90s ). They have since become one of my favorite bands. Hmmm. Regarding the production of this specific track, do you think that it could have been better in any way? I think musically the mantra of TOOL is to keep things 'simply complex'. The score IMO should reflect the best production to fit the nature of the music. Deciding what it does and more importantly DOESNT need. Finding that balance must be the most difficult thing to achieve when tying everything together. One thing i learned from TOOL is that i had to understand what they were trying to convey. Coming from a big thrash metal fan of my teen years, I waited to hear a track by Tool that really unleashed all 4 musicians full range of ability. Until i realised that's not the point of the music. There is more than enough in their catalogue (for me) to feast upon, and replay over and over. If I wanted something else, I would never ask of it out of a Tool song. Because i love what they do, and i think they do it exceptionally well. What i know for a fact the production values are outstanding and everything they want you to hear is delivered as intended, for whatever that is worth. Overall i really liked the review. I was surprised you called it a slow burn, because it's one of their more digestible commercial sounding helpings. As for the repetitive hypnotic riff. I know it wasnt a criticism of yours, but could tell you were actively being patient - (listen to 'The Patient' btw) for critic purposes. Perhaps you're not accustomed to being lulled in to such a pattern for longer durations. It reminds me of doom metal as a genre, where people who enjoy it hear the exact same thing for 4 minutes straight and go "yeah! this is the truth!". I was surprised your friend enjoyed it so much, happy that he did. Would have been interested to see his intial reaction. Though it's probably for the best your format is the way it is.

I know it wasnt a criticism of yours, but could tell you were actively being patient - (listen to 'The Patient' btw) for critic purposes. Perhaps you're not accustomed to being lulled in to such a pattern for longer durations. It reminds me of doom metal as a genre, where people who enjoy it hear the exact same thing for 4 minutes straight and go "yeah! this is the truth!". I was surprised your friend enjoyed it so much, happy that he did. Would have been interested to see his intial reaction. Though it's probably for the best your format is the way it is.
