Can't wait to see you listen to Lateralus for the first time. It's amazing how much Tool evolved from Undertow to Ænima to Lateralus.

From anger, to revenge/reflection, to higher conscious

    • @TheTallter
      @TheTallter 2 года назад +7

Third Eye is absolutely the evolution track. It has the early Tool rage transform into the open minded higher consciousness feel that Tool has had from Lateralus onward. It puts the listener through the experience of a perspective changing trip.
***SPOILER WARNING for Skullz*** This is then compounded with how Lateralus opens with a song about letting go of your grudges. It completes the transformation, with Maynard shedding that anger from the earlier records in that scream.

You legitimately have some of the best Tool reactions ever. I love watching you spiral out with your interpretations, and explanations, and insights. It reminds me a lot of my own journey with the band, and while I'm not sure that Tool has saved my life, I am certain that it has shaped my life, and the lessons and perspectives formed from listening to their music have enhanced my life, probably immeasurably. That I live in an age where I can watch someone, from across the world, enter the fold and start anew. It's truly amazing as well as fascinating.

The "Toolest" of Tool songs, in my book. One of those that gets better with each listen. Great reaction as always... you have an excellent ability to tease-out deeper meanings and find threads that connect the songs and the album as a whole. All those threads lead to Lateralus.... get ready! Meanwhile check out 46 & 2 by the O'Keefe Music Foundation and Tool's live 1993 performance of Sober, if you haven't already. Both are essential listens.

Hah! The "Toolest" of Tool songs hits the nail on the head. It's impossible to pick a favorite as all their songs are masterpieces, but if absolutely had to choose just one, it would be Thrid Eye. First time I heard it I was on acid. I don't think I need to elaborate on how insane this song sounded to me at that time.

One of the best analysis of Third eye on youtube. Thanks Skullz. Little hint, instead of seeing this as facing with his childhood, try think of it as facing with the buried unconscious memory from his previous life time - the vessel (body) which he used in that sand of time... Regarding the blue skin - many holy people in Eastern culture are depicted with blue skin, not only Shiva. That is how people perceived them since their energies were electric blue ((-)ions?). Eastern lore says that color of energies of higher beings is generally shining white, but when they want to descend to the lower level of being in order to interact with humans, or to do any specific project on material plane of existence - their energies become electric blue (drop in frequency). Here in this song, we have Maynard's facing with unconscious memory, under the guidance of one such blue being... People who had these interactions in life, have much trouble to explain to others, as words are far far away from what is really experienced. Shout out to Maynard how he managed to depict it. In which way he opened the natural screens of unconscious is relevant, but there is no point to speculate - is it mushroom, or is it maybe martial art (he is Jiu Jitsu brown belt) - there are many techniques to do that, but takes time and effort. Since he was PRYING, I would say later is more probable, but its just my guess... I liked how you ended the reaction - there is no point to have an experience if it does not TRANSFORM you after it, if there is no elevation, no ascendance in being. Otherwise, its just another interesting story to tell, and nothing else. Sat Nam 🙏

I've been listening to Tool since elementary school (my dad was always a massive fan) and I had a few songs I liked but didn't really care for most of their long mostly instrumental songs growing up. I love almost every song now but this song took me literally 10 years of hearing every now and then to truly appreciate and now it's definitely in my top 3 favorite tool songs... Trying psychedelics in my adulthood probably helped me appreciate some of their weirder songs tbh haha

Hell of a way to end the album eh? Please don't take too long of a break. This is way too much fun. Bro!! Great reaction!
This song took me forever to appreciate and come to an understanding of what it means to me. That’s what Tool’s music is for. Not for us to be told what it’s about or how we should feel while listening to it. It’s there for us to question our own belief system. To think for ourselves and question the leaders, teachers, authorities in our lives and come to our own personal realization of the music, the lyrics, the emotion that it creates within us. Think for ourselves, question authorities!
Love it bro! Can’t wait for the Lateralus reactions

They're from Sweden, one of a kind (in my opinion )band and masters of transitions, melodies, exceptional musicianship & more. The 'current band' members -
Mikael Åkerfeldt/vocals, lyricist, lead guitar, composer and overall master of everything he does.
    Fredrik Åkesson also lead guitar
    Martin Mendez - bass
Drums - Martin Axenrot-left the band, so a permanent one is TBD.
    Joakim Svalberg- keyboards/mellotron
    Thanks for your consideration.

Everyone who says Lateralus is the best Tool album was born after 1990. Lateralus is the first album that they heard from Tool and they don't ever go back and research early material. F****** millennials. It is a great album and it was one of the best live shows I've ever seen in my life but still I don't think it is the best that's only my opinion. My first tool concert was in 1993 and I've seen them eight times total. Also I think they are one of the best role models now. They're not strung out on drugs their lyrics actually mean something they live productive lives outside of music and they don't put themselves out there on social media like they are gods or something they're totally against that. Anyway, lifelong Tool fan, I love your Channel, I love to see Tool fans being born keep up the good work my friend.

(-) ions mean that the atom has gained electrons. So I think the title of that track needs to be viewed in that way.
Glad you got to experience all of this album. Your thoughts and theories about the story of the album was fun to listen to. I have my own thoughts about specific portions, but I love that Tool's music can be interpreted in so many ways.
I have to say this song is one of my favorites from the album. From a purely musical standpoint, it's definitely got the most going on. It's like a song about finally getting back in touch with a long lost loved one. Whether that's a part of yourself, someone else, some great truth, or some otherworldly entity you see when tripping, it's so uplifting to hear someone so joyous about something.

Great reaction as usual! I heard this song maybe 100 times and never really understood it until I heard it while tripping. My impression is that the subject (probably Maynard) was looking back in the past and wondering why the hell his old self's dreams and paths had changed...but realizes that once he was able to pry open his third eye and have an out of body experience he was able to know that it was his current self that strayed. Forcing to keep his third eye open is the only way he can be sure to connect with his child self to "get back" to his perception of his true path...haha like I said, I was tripping.

It just gets better with age. The effort. skill and care with which this was laid down never ceases to amaze me.... I don't think I could manage such a thing in my lifetime - so thank God for bands who can! Bill Hicks opened for them a few times back in the '90s before he got sick. I LOVE this outrageously mad song! (Mad as in crazy, nuts, bonkers. Not angry or anything like that.) Time signature, obviously loads of three going on there. I'm not sure it's how they worked back then, but now, technology being what it is, the band jams, each instrumentalist bringing their various ideas to the others, and after a whole lot of work, those immaculately beautiful, almost living instrumental parts are handed over to the inimitable MJK so that he can put words and vocal melodies to them. After all that, the band gets together as a unit and carefully build the complete songs like master engineers building awesome aural automatons. You'll become more and more aware of this as you progress through this study with us. They clearly trade ideas when it comes to the lyrics, though. Danny Carey, as I mentioned before and I'm sure loads of other people have, too, is a dinkum magician, which is, of course, made evident by the images he has on his drumkit. All of them are proper psychonauts to some degree or another. That third eye is obviously a reference to the mystical third eye that opens up as the kundalini rises - the pineal gland according to many which calcifies and becomes useless if one allows it to. Scientists involved in the study of such things say it's the part of the brain responsible for the production and excretion of DMT in the brain. With that being said, I'm sure that those "phosphorescent desert buttons" are the buttons of the peyote cactus that when eaten, send the eater on an all-expenses-paid trip into space.
Man, never mind the peyote. Just lie back with your eyes closed and let Tool help you with the job of prying open that third eye of yours. Maybe you've been working on it all along. When it's open, one knows it. But it's also all too easy for one to get distracted and neglect it for a time. When that happens, it can seem frustrating getting back on-track and get these glimpses behind the veil of illusion between one and the true reality behind that veil. "Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away?"
These are just two of many things that have occurred to me while enjoying this aural feast and it's a feast I've partaken of many times in many different states of mind. I once made myself pretty unpopular at a party by mixing "Third Eye" into somebody's psy-trance set while the mixing console was unattended and as you might imagine, private psy-trance party - many a psyche was being navigated in many a different way.
Anyway, that was fun. Thanks so much again for taking us with you. PEACE!

You don’t even know, but next week will be The Grudge, one of the greatest Tool songs of all. Love that you’re loving this journey! Lateralus is a masterpiece. Buckle up!
Also, lyrical edit. "Web's residue from my withered eye"
Also also, really really enjoy your lyrical interpretation. It really has shed a new light on Tool for me about this album that I'd never considered... even after being a 20+ year listener. Keep it up!!
LAST EDIT. Phosphorescent desert buttons = Peyote.

There is also a cover of a song by a group called Peach, which is the band Justin was in before Tool, the song is (You Lied) just amazing guitar work. Can't wait for Lateralus, my favorite album, my favorite song. Can't wait to see how the song Lateralus hits you, it made me cry the first time I heard it back in 2001, to this day I still tear up when I hear it.

it makes perfect sense for you to go straight onto Salival. you get properly mastered live material and a supreme cover version. david bottrill is also present again at the production helm (as he is for Lateralus, which was released just a few months later).

After he sings 'You thought that I had run away, chasing the trail of smoke and reason...' I have always visualised the music to be the third eye answering him back... which when listened to through that lens is fucking powerful. The music feels like the spiritual integration into being. I don't even trip and that's how it speaks to me...

This song is one of the single greatest sonic journeys I've ever been on, the evolution the song takes is just something only a handful of bands have given me. I always saw this song as the gateway to Lateralus. I didn't listen to the albums in order, so I never got to see the progression the way you're seeing it, but I'll be damned if I did not immediately acknowledge how far and away Third Eye takes you, almost as if it's trying to get you away from this album by the end and somewhere else entirely, never to return.

I’ve always seen this album as a reckoning of your own mortality. How to confront that. Be a good person. Don’t listen to that little voice in your head that tells you that you’re not good enough, because that’s your oppressor. Live unafraid. Finding your compassion is to finding your strength.

For in between you should consider doing the 93 live sober performance and or the tools Led Zeppelin no quarter cover off Salival then when your wrapped up with all the albums after fear Inoculum you gotta go back to 92 and do opiate and the new track they released back in March of this year called Opiate2

A trip indeed. It really is interesting, watching Tool, and other GREAT bands, evolve in their creative evolution, sound, & depth.
I know it's not Tool per se, but you mentioned some live reaction. Maybe consider A Perfect Circle, live@red rocks. That would be a cool breather before Lateralis. Just a thought. That's a really neat live show.

  • @AlabasterJazz

Your thoughts on how psychedelics might make dramatic advancements in the future is interesting. As someone who has also never had a trip, I feel Tool, and music in general, is perhaps the next closest thing. One of the things I like to do with Tool lyrics is to see them from the perspective of Humanity as a whole. It sometimes really does feel like there is some part of us we've collectively lost or forgotten, and that we're (hopefully) heading towards remembering what it was. After all the dogma , and smoke, and reason, we can realize we aren't hiding or running from anything. Time and experience is necessary in order to begin prying open our third eyes, not just individually, but as a species. I certainly hope we do.

This is, after all is said and done, perhaps my favorite Tool song. If I could choose only one, this might be it. I don't think it's objectively the best in any way I can explain, there's just something about it that grows on you. That being said, in my opinion, it is the perfect intro into Lateralus. I can't wait for your next reaction
