  • Skullz reacts to The Patient by Tool
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

Hearing Eon Blue Apocalypse followed by The Patient live during this last tour was absolute wizardry. It was so....cathartic and moving. PS: as you go through this album and others have probably mentioned this, but you have to listen to Parabol and Parabola together, and you have to listen to Disposition-Reflection-Triad together. Its a long haul, but its a single piece with three movements that happen to be broken into three tracks. And its worth more than every second.

These four humans are the epitome of genius. This is not simply instruments, lyrics, vocals brought together to make a listenable catchy track. The tale that is a Tool song, the meandering, winding, wild, journey that is a Tool album......... is utter masterpiece. There are few who achieve this, and Tool will go down in history as one of the very best. While each member individually has such talent and mastery of their instrument, the collective that is Tool is channeling the divine. I love it when people get this and appreciate it. I feel so blessed that I was gifted the experience of seeing them live several times over the years, and that it all translated on stage and transformed thousands in attendance every time to a unified collective of like minds sharing such a powerful experience.

There is a particularly epic bassline that plays twice during the highest emotional peaks of the song - though you don't notice it really because you're focused on Maynard and the repetitive guitar line, but you feel it!
I truly think it's worth saying that not all of Maynard lyrics are about his mother. Obviously his experiences with her are always kind of a foundational inspiration, which may shine through. But with tremendous respect, when they are just about her, he makes it pretty obvious. This song is about depression and grief - surrender and resolve. Nearly all of his songs are about himself first and foremost - and maybe he is hinting at some external entity as a proxy for that self, but the true meaning of most of his lyrics, and particularly this album are about personal healing, growth and transformation. And his lyrics are so powerful because they come from a sincere place knowing and experience - whether it was the projection of one's own pain in Undertow, or the realization of that projection in Aenima, to the process of healing and self-realization in Lateralus to then . . . . well I won't spoil anything about 10,000 Days.
The vast majority of explanations for his lyrics you'll find online are just something a fan said once long ago that a lot of people latched onto. Even his own brief and scarce explanations need to be taken with a grain of salt, as he used to do nothing but troll interviewers and fans. Whenever you hear "This was about a friend of the band" you can rest assured that it is about probably Maynard, or one of the other band-mates.
The whole album of Lateralus is about the self vs. the Self - exploring your own self-determined limitations and habitual patterns, and the healing that comes with that. I think it misses the point to consider his words being about anyone other than himself, for the majority of his lyrics, but particularly this album (with the exception of MAYBE Ticks and Leeches, but even then. . . .) While I concede there may be intentional double meanings, the foundation of the lyrics is about himself.
While this is probably my favorite all-time song by them, I acknowledge many people's other comments that the album just keeps getting better. As always thanks for YOUR sincerity and the opportunity to enjoy this music with fresh eyes!🙏
Edit: To clarify, I'm not saying he is selfish in his lyrics that everything is about him. But all of this is heavily inspired by Jungian psychology, which is in turn mostly inspired by Yogic philosophy. And Yoga is the journey to the Self through the self. There is only One consciousness, and you must move through, understand and heal the ego (self) to reveal that Oneness (Self.) 🙏

I heard somewhere that Ticks and Leeches was written to the record label when they wanted Tool to sound more like Slipknot, telling the record execs to suck it
Could be wrong tho, but that's a funny story so I'm keeping it as headcanon

    • @OhOkayThenLazySusan
      @OhOkayThenLazySusan Год назад +4

@@iangillies711 that is one story that actually does seem to have some truth to it. That's why I said they're all about him except possibly Ticks N Leeches lol.
I do think in the greater concept of the album it still makes sense. That visceral anger and destructive (transformative) expression is a very real part of the Self. We can heal from it, but its nature is ever present as the catalyst for change.
Even in this expression a certain maturity is shown, as this familiar anger is now directly and clearly expressed without any need to disguise this part of the Self through sarcasm or pessimism.
Whereas this feeling was continuously present through the previous albums, it's just one song here - reflective of it's place in the hierarchy of consciousness. It's real and needs to be acknowledged - but there's so much more of the other glorious aspects of life and the Self to focus on more regularly. 💚🙏

Not that their other albums aren't either but Lateralus was a big step in the bands progression and evolution. Lyrically this is a self help book. Maynard gives a lot of advice about working on your inner self. There is one song that needs an asterisk: Ticks and Leetches. The story is the big wigs at the record label wanted a more "radio-friendly" song that wasn't 10 minutes long and was harder. So the guys wrote Ticks and Leetches to troll the music company business men. It's still a bad ass song and I'm actually glad that all went down to force it in a way

In regard to the plucking sound, something interesting about Adam is that he did creature effects and visual arts in Hollywood films before Tool happened. The way he plays guitar sounds like he is applying textures in a visual way and plucking is one style he uses. I could just be reading into it, but I had this thought before I knew of his history in film.

Skullz thank you for deciding to cover Tool and go through their discography (though make sure at the end you check out Opiate, it's raw, but great).
But honestly, I've been watching Tool reaction channels for a long time now and no one has been able to provide the insights into their music like you have.
Your understanding of Maynard's lyrics right out of the gate is astounding, and you've even taught me a lot about how to interpret these songs, and Tool has been the soundtrack of my life for over 25 years now!
The connections you draw on your analysis of their music really is incredible, and has given me some new ways of looking at some of the songs, so thank you.
And also I really enjoy how you're able to recognise the quality of Adam's contributions on guitar. A lot of channels don't mention him much, probably because he doesn't leap out to them as technical, but he has the unique ability to make that guitar speak to the listener. He brings his parts to life and breathes soul into them, it's great that you can see that.
    Cheers!

The song from Maynard’s pov might be about his mother but like you said about the double meanings there actually three meanings of this song the first would be his mother the second would be his own experiences and then there’s the listener whatever your going through in life just remember your still here right now and hint: a song on this album not gonna spoil it by saying which is all about that, but you must keep reminding yourself that if there truly were no benefit of living and going on in life you already would’ve walked away from it by now but the duality of that is I still may BUT there’s still hope and you have to wait it out I love this band so much

Ultimately this is a song from his mother's perspective. It's a questioning of faith. The double meaning of patient is genius. It's essentially "Judith" from his mum's (sorry mom to you guys in the states) side. She feels tested by god and is looking for a reason as she feels burdensome (vampire act is getting old). The beauty of this song is that it can be applied so readily to other things. As someone who has suffered from depression it's words ring quite true to me in that life can feel like its testing you more unfairly and unnecessarily than someone else. But here you are anyway. Giving blood and keeping faith that there is a light. You just have to be patient and find it

"This tedious path I've chosen here" Maynard mentions more than once in this album the *Choice* of being alive. In fact he mentions the importance of choosing and choice often.
"This tedious path I've chosen here..." - The Patient
"Choose to... let this go" - The Grudge
"Choosing to be here in... This body, this body holding me" - Parabola
I think he and Adam have some metaphysical beliefs. Regardless, Maynard wants us to know that the most important thing you can do to affect your own direction is to make a choice.

    This song has saved lives.
I have had this theory for a while, but I'm just now looking into it: Salival came out in 2000 and Lateralus in 2001. I had always considered Lateralus kind of like an audio guide to life or Tree of Life. If you look at the back of Salival, you'll see an "inverted image of the Tree of Life" (that's what I thought it was), but it's actually The Qlippoth - the hell realm, and you have to go through it to complete the Tree in its entirely. If you overlay an image of the Tree on top of a human, the end spheres are in the upper torso and head, basically the cover of Laterealus.
