    Maybe you mentioned it but I didnt notice, but one thing to note about the design is that the spine is lowered compared to the handle. This makes the tip align with the point of origin of the force that you put into the handle in a thrust the same way the lowered tip of a bowie does. Good for thrusting from a distance which is what Lynn THompson advocates.

    I love the fact that they're using upgraded steels, and I hope it's a sign of things to come, but I'm just not crazy about the warcraft. Thanks for the review, man! Great job as always. I've been on the fence about it this piece of cutlery and this review really helped in my decision. Thanks again.

    Awesome review bro! I definitely have this knife in my list. I'm glad that cold steel is using some higher quality steels. Especially this year (2015). Maybe they'll finally compete a bit better with some of the other high end companies.

    Never was a big fun of American tanto, that being said my EDC is a CQC-7 tanto. With daily uses I find tanto tips usually lack a smooth penetration, and most times thrust not as deep as a drop point, based on my cardboard box testing. Blade magazine did a comparison test and met the similar conclusion that American tanto does not penetrate as well as Japanese tanto(basically a big drop point or a very subtle persian point) or traditional dagger. I found the secondary tip quite useful for opening boxes though, and the snap cut is definitely devastating. Granted, flesh and bone has little to no resistance to a piece of steel, sharpened or not. But for soldiers they most like wear layers of gears and clothing made of tough fibers, and maybe additionally body armor. I'm kinda curious how this knife will perform with that aspect.

    i'd also love to see you use this knife against the pallet because i know that 3V is known for extreme toughness. that grind looks like it'd do pretty well and at 3/16" thick, i think it'll be a good chopper too. not saying it's the best for survival, but i'm sure it could flex into that role.

    Thank you for a great video on an awesome blade! You bring up an excellent point regarding the need for a certain level of physical fitness and ability when it comes to knife fighting. As with firearms community, it seems that there's a multitude of armchair combat knife experts who think that the best steels, blade styles, certain brands and other knife characteristics will save them and carry them through in a violent encounter while being in denial about their own abilities. I hope these individuals watch this video and get the reality check that they need. I suggest that you upload a video or even a series regarding this as I feel that it's an important and neglected (at least on RUclips) topic that needs addressing. Perhaps you can illustrate exercises or training drills that would help us, as well as touch on the proper mental state. I believe you have the ability and clout to do such, and your down-to-earth and tell-it-like-it-is attitude will connect with a lot of people and greatly benefit them. Keep up the great work!

      Glennisguntoro Thanks, I'll definitely consider doing a video discussing pre-requisites for fighting with or without knife. People need to get roughed up and get raw and physical if they seriously want to consider fighting. Most people have pretty slow reaction time. That alone should disqualify them from any sort of knife dueling. Balance and hand eye coordination are not so good in the general population either, I mean their knife "fight" is gonna look like "white guy can't dance" LOL. Regarding combat mindset, I'd say about 40% of men and 60% of woman don't belong anywhere near a fight, because they have non-aggressive temperaments and poor reactions to stress. Angry, sadistic, hardened, violent, opportunistic, predatory, sneaky, deceptive, heartless people do well in fights. If a person is not like that, they need to find some way to temporarily become like that during their violent encounter.

    Hi Israel, I'm on the fence on what kind of STAINLESS steel knife to get as a survival/tactical fixed blade between 4.5 to 7 inches. Around 5-6" would be perfect. I want a premium steel, but I can't afford more than $250 MAX. I love SURVIVE knives, but I wrote them off bc I can't ever get one. I like the Steel Will Gekko 1530 & Bradford Guardian5, just wish they were more designed like SURVIVE. Any suggestions?? I respect you & you're opinion! Hopefully you'll read this lol. Peace brother. I really wish to hear back from you. Hope life is going we'll for you.

    I purchased this as my first high end knife. I was so excited when I pulled it out of the package but when I held it in my hand I was not only disappointed but upset. The handle is shaped in such a way on the blade side of the handle has an angle so rounded and sharp in such a way that it hits the bone in the middle of the middle joint of your fingers. It is the only knife I have ever had that hurt to hold. I don't know what the designer was thinking when he made the handle. Note I have normal to large hands.

    Great review, nice and in depth as it should be (liked and subscribed). I must say I really like my new warcraft tanto but I haven't had much time to do anything with it aside from drool over. It doesn't have the fit and finish I thought a 300$ knife would have (which is what it retails for I believe but obviously cheaper on some sites) but aside from that it is pretty cool looking and definitely unique especially with that quality of steel ( which I now have the pleasure of testing out as this is my first knife of that kind of steel). Anyway once again nice video I have never really watched your vids but I liked how in depth it was. Keep up the good work

    The warcraft series will eventually branch out into other blade designs like how kabar does there series of fixed blades where you can get a higher end steel in different blade shapes this has been said directly by their owner since cold steel is going to be using these new high end steels on their knives it will make it much better options especially for some steel snobs... I just think it's good all around that we will continue to get great and better offerings from their company (the reason the picked a tanto style to bring out there new warcraft line was because the tanto lines for them have been their most popular knives they have sold over the yrs.) I can't wait to see a warcraft bowie or talwar fixed blade design or even maybe one of their kukris because that's another famous design that they sell and design greatly the best designs this knife steel will be great for is their full flat grind blades and their hollow ground blade because lesser steels can fail under stress because of the little amount of steel behind the edge and I feel this will fix some issues people have had. like imagine a cpm-3v fixed blade offering of their espada series.... or a folding xhp versions of their espada series those will be insanely tough like nothing people have seen so far (not saying that aus 8a isn't a good steel it's fine for most applications but a combo of their vault tough locks with some high end steel will be crazy to see testing videos of those and being able to own them will be just awesome!!)

    Great review, very informative and interesting. For fighting alone I would think it would be a bit big and chunky and heavy in comparison to other lighter faster and more nimble blades that are still the same length since length is probably a good thing usually.. but.. a knife would have to be pretty bigggg before it's actually slowing you down so much that it's making you measurably vulnerable in comparison to another lighter knife.. and most of that would of course come down to the persons abilities regardless of the knife as you said.. I personally don't have any knife martial arts or fighting experience to have an opinion other than this lol I imagine fighting with my BK9 would be slower and more risky than another smaller knife but it's got reach (which might not count for much in a real fight) but maybe the adrenaline would make the BK9 feel like a feather and it wouldn't matter that it's a big knife. But regardless, seems like overkill and unnecessary or redundant to choose a knife of the same length of another knife but choose the heavier more chunky one.

    Tantos are a over hyped gimmick. While the point is strong, it is excessively thick and broad angle actually makes the tanto a poor penetrator when compared to clip points and spear points. Cold Steel invested a lot of money and advertising hyping up the tanto as the ultimate fighting knife blade design. They even claimed to base their tanto on ancient Japanese sword tips and people jumped on the fan boy bandwagon. I have to admit that I fell for the hype too.
    My first Cold Steel was the small fixed blade tanto that came out in the late 1980's. This was the first time CS showed the tanto blade penetrating a car hood without being damaged. I was amazed and had to have one. I remember asking my parents to get me this for Christmas and back then the retail costs for the small version was about $120 which was expensive for a small fixed blade knife in the late 1980's. I showed my folks the well worn Cold Steel product catalog that had been passed around my circle of friends for the past 3 months. My mother wasn't very enthusiastic about the idea of allowing a 16 year old to have a knife capable of penetrating car doors but my father agreed that it was a cool knife. Later, on Christmas day there was a small box in my stocking and I was the envy of all my friends because I had the ultimate knife!
    We spent countless time in our local woods building shelters, making fires and just having fun. After a few weeks I realized that the tanto was really just a gimmick. It didn't penetrate as well as my friends Buck 110. It was very hard to make it stick in the target when knife throwing because the entire secondary bevel had to go into the wood target in order for the knife to stick. My friends Puma did much better than my super tanto. In fact, my ultimate Cold Steel tanto didn't do any tasks better than my friends outdoor knives. But I had a secret weapon that would guarantee that my knife was the best of the bunch. My knife could penetrate a car door or hood with no damage to the tip. I know because there is a picture of CS President Lynn Thompson doing it in the catalog! It was lucky for me that there weren't any junked cars available for us to test my knife on because I have a feeling that any fixed blade knife of decent quality is capable of penetrating the thin sheet metal used in automobile doors.
    Later on I did some research and found out that Japanese sword makers didn't use the tanto tip. In fact, I found no documentation that the tanto tip was ever used on any bladed weapons. Anyway, I still have my first CS and it is a strong, well made knife but if given a choice, I would take a drop point over a tanto any day of the week.

    • @nathan_navaja
      @nathan_navaja 8 лет назад +3

      Eurotrash4367 You're missing the entire point (Haha) of the American Tanto design. It's designed primarily for killing /self-defense, not outdoor use or throwing. Thus, why its so popular with soldiers and martial artists. The tip is reinforced, so when stabbed into bone, it will split and go through with no damage to the knife, or if you hit a magazine on a terrorist's chest, you won't snap your tip off. The secondary point is designed to dig in very deep when used in a snap cut, the main type of cut used in a self-defense encounter, or knife fight.
      I assure you, the American Tanto point will penetrate quite easily into soft targets as well. Obviously not as effortlessly as a dagger or clip point, but it was designed with ultimate strength in mind.
      Japanese Tantos have a far less pronounced Yokote, thus, they look nothing like the Americanized versions. Lynn Thompson reinvented the tanto in the 80's to suit his needs and fighting style, and to basically improve upon the design.

    • @anotherknifelover
      @anotherknifelover 7 лет назад +2

      Nice story, but you did not get it. CS Tantos are mainly designed for combat, and not for bush craft, and in this matter they are hard to beat. Show me one knife design, which is better in a " snap cut" ? Yes, a real Bowie with a sharp clip would have a similar effect in a "back cut", but than the knife should be at least 10" long. It would fail, if you use it, as you would use the CS Tantos. Simply because of law of Physics: To much surface!
      Many years ago I tested several combat/ fighting knifes by cutting and stabbing into death hogs. I was searching for the ultimate fighting knife. And I agree, there are better stabbers out there than the CS Tantos. But I can guarantee you. If you have to thrust, you will use all your power you have. And than it does not matter. Every sharp knife with a tip will penetrate until it gets stopped by a larger bone. Now you will see, if a knife is a true fighting knife or not. In my test some knifes bent and some got stuck so deep in the bone, that it was almost impossible to pull them out. In a real knife fight a disaster. After this test I became a CS fan boy.

      The Tanto is also very good at removing caulk from old windows. I haven't found any blade shape that does better than the Tanto for this task. I don't knife fight and I don't stab dead animals so I will just take your word that the Tanto does well for those tasks. I prefer the classic drop point blade style which does a fine job for the vast majority of tasks that I use a knife for.
