The Pie Fight Ending of Dr. Strangelove

- As everyone knows, Stanley Kubrick's 1964 movie Dr. Strangelove ended with the title character (masterfully played by Peter Sellers) emerging from his wheelchair almost like how Lazarus emerged from his coffin. Strangelove then proceeds to take a few steps and the screen cuts to a montage of atom bombs.
However, in a cut, extended ending, the film went on to show that Dr. Strangelove then fell flat on his face. General Turgidson then notices the Russian Ambassador taking pictures of "the big board" and proceeds to tackle him.
Turgidson then asks for permission for a strip-search on the russian ambassador for more cameras, only to have the Ambassador throw a custard pie from the buffet table at him in a rage. Turgidson ducks and the pie hits President Muffley instead, which prompts a comical pie fight in the War Room which simulates an actual battle.

For the 60th Anniversary, they should make a 4K release and add the pie ending as an extra. I’d pay to see it. Dr. Strangelove is without a doubt my favorite movie of all time
He mentions in the video that Kubrick's estate apparantly needs approval everytime it's shown, which means there's probably some kind of weird issue preventing them from including it in any home video releases, sadly.

They need to make this ending some kind of DVD bonus because the ending does sound hilarious but obviously cannot be in the main film
There's an amazing pie fight scene in The Great Race (Jack Lemmon / Tony Curtis / Natalie Wood). It came out in 65, just a year after this movie. That's kind of hilarious as far as timing goes. I read it was something like 4000 pies and they alone cost $18k. It's a hilarious scene. 😂 I'd love to see the Dr. Strangelove scene though!

A shame as I love a good food fight. It would've definitely been a bit more of a light-hearted ending for a comedy rather than showing the real bombs which was pretty terrifying, even if they were basically losing their minds due to the world coming to an end.
That is the point of cutting it I believe. The pie fight is a joke because we should by ourselves understand the ridiculous contrast pushed very far this time of people deciding of the fate of the human race while being absolutely childish. I think he believed a good chunk of people would not understand that and solely use it as comic reflief for themselves. In contrary, the matter of the death of 95% of the world population should mostly be treated as a serious matter wouldn't you agree ?
At the opposite, almost all of the politicians being able to put us in a similar situation are very much complete jokes as human beings. The reason why the film is a comedy first and foremost or maybe even as unique reason.
To lighten up the ending, it was a pie in the sky idea.
Right up there with the death ending in "Clerks"

It would have made more sense to cut out the "struck down" comment, retain the pie fight since the smiling can be accounted to everyone in the room snapping and just have the nuclear blast scene go off right as Strangelove's luger fires
I had seen the pictures of the pie fight before, they've been around for awhile, but I was unsure if the footage still exists anywhere, if it is in the British film archives they still have to get permission from his wife, she runs the estate.
I can only hope and pray to whatever is out there that one day, the footage of this alternate ending will become available to public viewing

The footage of this scene has to be in a vault somewhere I don't think it was destroyed and I have wanted to see it for decades since I first read about it the photos in this video are great now if only someone at the studio will find the actual scene it will be wonderful to see it after all this time.
I wish the pie fight would had made it to the final cut that with the bombs going off and the song all together it would had made it even more surreal but I sure Stan had his reasons for not including it a brilliant movie like fail safe on mescaline

Another thing changed because of the Kennedy assassination was when Major Kong (Slim Pickens at his best),when he reads off the survival kit contents check, with the cash,gold,and stockings,he originally said that "A feller could have a pretty good time in Vegas", but he originally said "Dallas".You can tell when you watch his mouth. So the scene where he tackles the ambassador is actually at the end?
I'm glad this was cut. This movie's mostly realistic, and a Three Stooges-esque pie fight just seems ridiculous, even when considering that this is a comedy.

I'm so glad they dropped this alternate ending. It looks really dumb and would have detracted from the genius of the rest of the film. I find it difficult to imagine how it could even have been considered. The dropping of this scene is probably the only good thing to come of President Kennedy's assassination.
I agree. The blatant slapstick conclusion would have significantly clashed with the satirical menace of the main movie theme. Also, I don't know how you could have
properly scored music for this portion without pouring insult on the remainder of
the movie's low-key but sober musical score?
