"Well boys, looks like it's nuclear combat. Toe to toe with the Rooskies."
Indeed. One of the greatest films ever made.

I love that the lt. has the cowboy hat locked on the safe
"Survival kit contents check ... A fella could have a pretty good time in Vegas with all that stuff."
Watch Slim Pickens lips carefully when you hear that. The original line was "A fella could have a pretty good time in Dallas with all that stuff". The film was set to be first screened on November 22, 1963, but was delayed until January 1964 due to the assassination of President Kennedy and the line was dubbed from "Dallas" to "Vegas" in post-production.
One of the greatest movies ever made. Amazing actors too.
Saw it, while in the Army! Fantastic movie!
@rongendron8705 My dad was in the Air Force overseas when he saw it. He and his buddies couldn't quite believe they had made a movie like this. By the end they were rolling.
Slim Pickens at his very best. Nuclear Cowboy Up!
" What in the wide world of sports is goin on here? I payed you boys to lay down some track. Not dance around like... That's Classic Pickens
Reportedly, Kubrick didn't tell Pickens that this movie was supposed to be a satirical comedy. So Pickens played his role seriously, which only added to the comedy.
I like how he retrieved his shit kicker hat from the safe where all the mission profiles were kept.
Yup I I was gonna check out ..do it with style
What is great is they made them 100% professional and yet still funny. The humor was in their humanity.
And Kubrick had never seen the inside of a B 52- they invented it all. And the Air Force sent people to talk to them because they had guessed so accurately.
@@basilmcdonnell9807 They built the cockpit from a 707 flight manual but somehow they nailed the weapons/radar workspace as well. Yes, the Air Force cried foul.
@@basilmcdonnell9807 Just one photo, a few descriptions, knowing what the outside diameter was and what the B-29 was like.
@@basilmcdonnell9807 I read somewhere that Kubrick had his staff research a variety of magazines (such as Aviation Week) and various publicity/advertising photos, and they found enough images to help map out the interior space.
@@basilmcdonnell9807
Effectively, Kubrick's team designed the interior of a jet bomber.
"If we were flyin' any lower we'd need sleigh bells on this thing...".....

When you think he's opening the safe to get something important out, it's his hat. Classic. Loved it then and more now.
It IS something important!
Throughout the movie the B-52 crew behaves heroically and thoroughly American. That they do so in service of a tragically misplaced objective determined for them by the ruling class is an indictment of the fact that their corruption and love of war have not changed one iota since the 1950s. :(
I bet it was his own hat, and not a prop.
@@Heike-- Sure kid.
Oh they open up another safe for the attack plans . . . right next to the centerfold.
@@shawnkennedy855 A Kennedy, can't stand to hear Americans praised and ruling class insulted. Just like a Democrat!
Also later, "you can't fight in here, this is the war room!"
I understand that when George C Scott {General Buck Turgidson} tripped and fell down in the War Room it wasn't in the script but they left it in anyway.
If you take a good look at the Playboy centerfold, you'll see that it's General Turgidson's secretary. A fun jest by Kubrick.
With a copy of "Foreign Affairs" covering her derriere
Kubrick rarely missed an opportunity for an in-joke.
I have seen this film several times and never realized the Centerfold was the actress playing the Secretary THANKS
"But Bucky, I'm not sleepy either"
Omg lol
"Listen, ive been to one world fair, a pinic, and a rodeo and thats the dumbest thing ive heard over a set of ear phones."
I love Goldie eating his tuna fish sandwich, as he is telling Major Kong its attack plan R. Great ! 😊

This movie was so close to SAC procedures that they thought that a major security leak had happened.
It sure looks like that to me. The inside of the B-52 looks like they used the real thing.
@@mackermaldrill2656they received no assistance from the US Air Force. Kubrick and set designer Ken Adam had to invent the interior by using technical manuals. It was so accurate that real bomber crews later thought they had infiltrated an American B-52 base.
I served alert on B-52s in the early 80s. The procedures we had then were not like those in this movie. And the paint scheme is wrong for the D models on alert at the time. Still a pretty good film.
What's your source for that claim?
Same with the B-52 set up. They asked the USAF for help with the mock up (they said no) and managed to put together an incredibly realistic cockpit!
Fun Fact: Kubrick had to guess where the crew stations were on the B-52 set as he wasn't allowed access to an actual plane. the result was so close to accurate he was apparently questioned by the FBI as to where he got the information. Turns out he simply arranged the duty stations in positions where they made sense ergonomically.
Form follows function.
I think I read somewhere that he was able to check out either a B-29 or B-47, maybe both, in order to get some idea.
A Time magazine article with pics of the interior was the biggest help and the technical advisor was a retired Airforce Colonel who was amazed at how accurate it was down to the gauges and switches. It cost a $1 million dollars to build in '63 money. The Models used were of the B-52G.
They and the H models were the only used for Nuclear missions. The Ds were used for conventional in Nam.
"Nu-clur combat, toe-to-toe with the Rooskies."
Slim Pickins was excellent
It is my understanding he was somewhat lead astray and not really told this was to be a dark comedy against nuclear war, he was allegedly lead to believe he was doing something patriotic.
@@trinab9612 Well, he was sort of. Nothing patriotic about nuclear war. George Scott was led astray also and also gave an outstanding performance.
Who's a LEAD ASHTRAY?
@@trinab9612 When he showed up in the UK wearing boots and a stetson the crew assumed he was trying to get in character

'Major Kong', and 'Oddball' from Kelly's Hero's. Two of the best war characters ever to make it onto film.
And Lord Vader as his in-plane engineer :D
"YOU CAN'T FIGHT IN HERE, THIS IS THE WAR ROOM"
When Kong puts on that Cowboy Hat, you know it's game on.
One of my favourite movies of all time watched this movie when I was 10 years old
My brother proudly wore the SAC patch back then. A mech on the B-58 Hustler stationed in Little Rock. Scary times back then as we were all worried about nuclear bombs.
No kidding? My dad was stationed there when he got back from Greece in 65. I was born at the base hospital a year later. Believe it or not, I was almost named Hustler. Thank god for my mother's sense.
"Well, I've been to one World Fair, a picnic and a rodeo and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard over a set of earphones..."
Greatest line ever
I can't help but admire these guys.
They get a message saying they are being sent to their deaths - and they go.
.
Not quite so - the crews of the two planes that dropped atomic bombs on Japan survived.
Mission design was that the crews would survive. The circumstances of this mission basically mean that as options narrow the crew goes from getting home to ditching at a weather ship to crash landing in northwestern Alaska. Nome if possible. There’s no place like Nome.
@@PS-pp7kn The circumstances in August 1965 were much different from those of a global nuclear war.
The air force made sure that their families died on the bases this was to ensure that they would complete the mission for revenge. That's right they would sacrifice the family lives.
@@robertbolding4182 That is the whole idea of Mutually Assured Destruction - a credible threat of nuclear annihilation was intended to prevent it from actually happening. So far, it has.
I believe this is James Earl Jones first appearance in a motion picture.
The B52 in this movie is participating in what in real life was called operation Chrome Dome.
I thank Christ that I wasn’t aircrew during Chrome Dome (‘86-‘92), as the Buff was an extremely uncomfortable aircraft. It was loud, stinky, and cramped! Even happier that I was in after they disallowed smoking on the aircraft. The plane stunk enough as it was!
Slim Pickens, they broke the mold on that guy !
What made me laugh , was when the attack was confirmed , Major Kong puts on his cowboy hat to go to war in ! A good ole boy ! 😊😊😊
The gummint interviewed Stanley Kubrick, the director, after this film came out, because his depiction of the interior of the B-52 and the procedures the crew is shown going through were considered “Top Secret” in 1964. They were sure somebody leaked these facts to Kubrick!
Hey! How'd you know about our super secret planning schemes?!
@@FormerVicePresidentDickVeiny Who me? I see nothing! I hear nothing! I know nothing! 😆
I'm fairly sure that was actually a bit of counter-intelligence. Of course the inner workings of a B-52 and it's crew *were* top secret at the time, and the various people involved in producing the film made it clear that they had no idea. The interior was all made up. But that posed a good opportunity to sell the Russians a lie. Make it seem like you're angry and they'll think it's real!
@@daredemontriple6 That’s an interesting take on it, for sure. It’s one of those movie mysteries we’ll never really know!
@@daredemontriple6 There is, however, an actual bunk in a B52 for a single crewman to stretch out in. From what I understand it's not often used as it's proximate to a relief tube.
slim pickens was so perfect for that role.
Anyone besides me ever notice that it's daylight in the USSR at the same time that it's daytime at Burfleson AFB?
Very observant.
The distance from London to Moscow is only 1800 miles and the time is only 2 hours difference. For reference, LA to Chicago is 2015 miles and two-hour time difference.
I don't want no horsing around on the airplane. LOL!!!!!!!!!
STILL get chills seeing these scenes!!! 🫨
The top two on my GOAT list; 2) Citizen Kane. 1) Dr. Strangelove.. If Strangelove had just been a comment on the Cold War, it would be forgotten by now. That it’s not is a testament to the script, Kubrick’s genius, and the masterpiece he created.
This is one of the best films ever made.
It sure is. Genius all around.
Dr Strangelove is a cautionary tale. Once the nuclear candle is lit. There’s no turning back.
Stanley Kubrick was a one-of-kind director.
Oh no , he would be banned as director as per today's standards for lack of "empathy" and goodwillness"
this is my favorite movie theres no other piece of media that elicits the feelings that this does. besides kids tv
Kong keeping his cowboy hat in the safe is classic.
Well, he got his priorities right. A good hat should be taken care of.
You couldn't have even made this movie without Slim Pickens.
Dude had a cowboy hat locked in a safe for just this occasion
I love how a copy of Foreign Affairs Magazine is covering the model's bottom.
The centerfold is actually Miss Scott (Tracy Reed) General Turgidson’s Secretary
Those planes were practically new then, and to think, they are still flying and expected to continue to do so for decades still!
The BUFF is forever.
Don't forget the mineshaft gap.
This is one piece of a movie scene ! Damn !😮
Peter Sellers was great. Playing three separate rolls.
He was also going to play Major Kong, the stress of playing 4 roles got to him.
@@deadon4847 I think he got hurt rehearsing the bomb drop.
Sourdough, wheat and rye.
The only role he couldn't play was Peter Sellers.
@@jsmariani4180 A very fortunate accident. Kubrick did not like the idea of Sellers playing multiple roles, but the studio wanted it because of his performance in Lolita. Sellers made it work though, much of his dialogue was improvised and rewritten into the screenplay. Slim Pickens was called in and the British film crew thought he was already in character when he arrived. The recognition he got from the role boosted his pay per film by about 5x.
I’ve seen this movie several times over the years. and have it on dvd in my library. So serious, yet so funny.
Boy, how James Earl Jones evolved! Both he and the late great David Prowse (the two main actors behind Darth Vader in the original 1977 _Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope_ ) got their starts with Stanley Kubrick and were pooled by George Lucas into creating a most significant villain of cinema. The nightmarish love child of Lt. Lothar Zogg the Bombardier from this film and Julian the Bodyguard from Kubrick's later film _A Clockwork Orange._
One of my all time favorites.
Darth Vader at his best.
Dr. Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, 2001.
Kubrick's exceptional masterpieces
Slim’s finest role.”Nuclear combat! Toe to toe with the Rooskies!”😂
One of the greatest movies ever made !
- Those crews REALLY were up there for many hours at a time.
- I love it when they come up from the lower deck.
That threat had a huge impact on preventing WWIII.
Major Kong, love it.
"Wershington" LMAO !
Peter Sellers was originally going to play this part as well, but was injured, which probably worked out for the best. The survival kit contents were pretty good too.
I've often what would it have been like if Peter Sellers had played Maj Kong as originally intended or Slim Pickens had played Halloran in "The Shining" as Kubrick initially wanted.
Amazing technology in those days. Boeing designed the B52 to cast the shadow of a B17. That's a devious plan, genius!
"nuclear combat toe to toe with the Russkies" , classic
That "better get a confirmation from base" was against protocol as "base" could be compromised or an enemy comms intercept. You get the code; you go, no questions asked by the pilots, all thosr questions were asked and answered by SAC before sending the code.
If that was the case then the Vasili Arkhipov would have just gotten ahead with the nuclear launch and then doom the entire world to death because a decision this important couldn't be confirmed? I'd rather avoid dying due to any technical error
If you didn't fly for SAC - how would you know? And if you did fly for SAC - what the hell are you doing talking about it on RUclips?
.
Nope.
I love the documentary style Kubrick chose for this scene. And I can't imagine anyone besides Slim Pickens as the pilot.
That cast was a murderers row of talent
Peak Slim Pickens right here...doesn't get any better than this \m/
Peter Sellers played 3 different characters in that movie 🎥
Originally, he was supposed to play Major Kong as well,
but his portrayal of that role wasn't different enough from his portrayal of President Muffley. So that's when they recast the part with Slim Pickens.
My daughters in USAF is a B-52 Captain. I gotta teach her to talk like Slim Pickens!😅
Never realized that James Earl Jones was one of the crew!
This hits different to twenty years ago.
"Nuclear combat toe to toe with the Ruskies," too funny.
I have always loved this movie. I have watched it hundreds of times and each time always seems like the first.
Peter Sellers was originally set to play Kong, but suffered a broken leg.
(according to a semi-official biography movie, he faked it because he didn't want to play Kong)
“There is no fighting in the War Room!”
Couldn’t be more terrifying! I can’t help the hair running up and down my spine whenever I hear this.
Love Slim in this movie. He was great.
The greatest movie with 😊😊 SLIM....
And them B 52 s are still flying at over 60 years old.
Slim Pickens riding the H Bomb like a bull, cinematic gold.
Great movie- and if you watch 2001: A Space Odyssey you will see a lot of parallel scenes/scenarios ... Kubrick seemed to have a mis-trust of technology!
Maj Kong's cowboy hat wasn't a prop, Slim Pickens wore it from California for the filming of the movie.
He also held up production because he didn't have a passport.
They still fly nuclear arms out here at Minot AFB. The b52 is a majestic if a little ugly beast. It moves through the air just as smooth as a picture. Theyre amazing if you can manage to forget the world changing payload they take off with everyday
Agree a great film. However I wish the Special Effects with the B52 Flying were better. I understand Kubrick had an Assistant Film Crew charter a plane and fly over the Artic to get the Artic Film Scenes. Also Spielberg has claimed the way the attack on the Air Force base is filmed is how he decided to film Saving Private Ryan's war scenes with the quick editing docu feel. Finally Kubrick originally was going to make a serious film about Nuclear War. But after learning about the philosophy of deterrent.... Both sides building up their nuclear capabilities to form the mutual destruction philosophy. Kubrick determined this to be soo absurd the only way to make a film about this subject was a Black Comedy.
Brilliant film, one of the best 👌.
Dark Star owes a bit to this.
Slim Pickens rides it down to the target, waving his hat.
I have a safe in my home with those exact contents. You can never be to prepared. Thank you slim.
I love his Rodeo ride down.
although it's an old film, it's still relevant and just as scary today
Chilling but funny. And still possible.
Such a classic!
One of the best films ever made, and filmed in Shepperton Studios, near London, England.
"Mein Führer, .. I can walk"
they still fly those loops or eights
No, that was phased out long ago. Land and submarine based ICBMs took over the primary strategic deterrence role. Operation Chrome Dome and the like were too demanding on the men and aircraft.
Omg . This is one of the best .
As a texan the best line to me is "I don't care if it harelips everyone on Bear Creek" LMAO
One of my all time top 10 movies.
Great film this. The satire in it is surprisingly deep.
