- Tractor Time with Tim discusses US DOT vehicle requirements with Indiana Senior Trooper Hoover. If you are using your truck, trailer and tractor for commercial purposes across state lines with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 26,000 lbs - what is required? Trooper Hoover educates us on DOT numbers, IFTA (fuel tax), safety requirements and more. Please be sure to check the regulations in your own state as they may be different than Indiana.

When you get into trucking you find out real quick evryone wants in your pocket up to their armpits.
Good grief. It seems like those who try to work hardest get punished the most.
You are no more regulated then a nurse, doctor, train conductor, school teacher, police officer, or class A builder!
And people in those professions presumably work hard. Too much regulation hinders productivity, which was my point.
Jeremy TV ain’t that right
Being totally ignorant about such, I would ONLY want the Feds to deal with SAFETY issues with such, the rest live and let live!
Just paid MD $1200 to just keep my company's name for another year.
Truckers are an “ATM” for troopers.
No shit dude I was a semi driver. The reason I quit was because of the electronic logs. That is bullshit
I can agree most of the time.
Not all of them I’ve been pulled over for DOT. Inspections hundreds of times while I’ve had a few initials rude officers I always start the conversation with a friendly greeting not to mention I keep my truck in peak condition
*citizens are an ATM for government.
@@GoblinCommisar hundreds of times? Really? You must be driving a real pc of sh!t.
I'm not for hire I just help people and they help pay for the tractor habit.
When you have to deal with the DOT inspections, Your going to be in for a major surprise, I have recently retired for trucking and I can tell you as soon as you put a USDOT and MC number on your P/U you are then open for regs and restrictions like youve never even dreamed of. ELDs or Log books, hours of service, truck maint logs, Your CDL physical ( $200.00 and up ) . You can go through the same inspection port every day and in most cases the Inspections differ depending on who our what there are after that day!!! By the time I retired I was just sick of the government B/S. Ive used great restraint in my comments the best I good lol.
Where are you getting your dot physical at that it cost $200+?
Its not about making the roads safe, its about government creating jobs and PURPOSELY NEVER solving problems so they can continue to create more jobs to solve problems that will never be solved and so on and so on. Think about it, once they actually solve and eliminate a problem then they put themselves out of a job, that's why things in the USA are so fucked up.
I hear you, I got an inspection leaving one state and then another as I entered the next state, they could care less that the other state just inspected my rig.
@@petebusch9069 thats with everything in america now, everything has been transformed into a business.
The look on Tim's face when he finds out all the crap he has to do now to be legal is painful. He's now cursing this whole Truck and Trailer Tuesday deal!
Ryan Wallace my thoughts exactly! You could just see the joy drain from his face as the trooper talked.
Turns out there is an Indiana exemption which he told me about off camera! Whew! That was close!
@@TractorTimewithTim is that the 150 mile rule
No. This is something different.
What's the exemption?
They should change DOT numbers to HRN " Highway Robbery Number". Its completely ridiculous to go through all this to operate a pickup truck to haul around a oversized lawn mower. They gotta make sure the little man gets the least amount of money in his pockets as possible.
They love to see you on the road! A million reasons to take your money nit so much as to keep the roads safe!
My thoughts exactly and its even worse today! Friggin fuses OMG!
FACTS! Leave small businesses alone and let us get to work.
Some of these laws I understand, most however seem a lot like “legal” robbery
That's exactly what it is. State tax, fuel, tax, federal tax, tax, tax, fees, and more fees and restrictions
Yep.!!! I call it steeling.!!! But they get by with it. And make lot's of $$$.$$$.$$.!!!🤔
Lol legalized extortion you can do whatever you want as long as you pay us our cut and whatever we decide to add on
All these regulations means you’ll have to start carrying a table too to be paid under. Great information Tim.
Best comment on the internet... lol
this series with the DOT man is been really informative thanks TTWT for doing this
Tim, as you grow, I grow! I would not be as ahead as I am now were it not for you! Following you all these years has shortened my tractor learning curve tremendously. I'm very much obliged!
And People wonder why no one wants to drive for a living anymore. I have driven semi's going on 26 years and it just keeps getting worse and worse. I can't wait for the day I can finally get out of the truck. Not because I don't love trucking because I do its all of the government over stepping the boundaries saying its about safety when its getting more and more unsafe out here every day. Its all about revenue and control and disguised as a safety issue.
I'm with you, I drove for almost 26 years and June1, 2016 was my last day driving commercially. Still retain my CDL because I pull a 38' gooseneck and some states require a CDL.
I’ve seen this Mr. Hoover a few times on the RUclips.. Thank you Mr. Hoover! You have helped me a ton
This is really good that the Trooper has given time to help with this vid.
All a money racket

Just be thankful you weren't pulled over on the side of the road in the wrong . The look on my face was the same as yours . Had no company name or dot numbers on truck , no inspection on truck or trailer , and i was well above needing a cdl with a f550 and a 7k trailer . Thank the lord I was pulled over by an extremely understanding officer. It definately made for a bad Monday with a week full of jobs I couldn't drive to .
This guy just admitted that they use the fuse requirement as a “catch” for drivers. Wtf
Cuz it is required for all cdl drivers....its in the books...
Almost all vehicles have a few spares in the fuse box
Does anyone know what the legal definition of the word driver is....?
There goes your Profit Tim
Little tips that help you understand how DOT works, thanks for the video Tim!
This is an awesome video. Please make another explaining log book requirements.
Compliance with all the regulations is great. But, you can still talk your way into a fine and never out of one.
Thank u for your info I work at at landscape company , I know alot of people aren't licence to heavy loads loads trucks are stressed improperly serviced and alot of other things stay safe officer.
Very informative. Thanks for the uplift scripture at the end. Perfect.
Thank you! GOD BLESS YOU !
I don't know why this is my favorite series. I guess I've drove big truck. It's very interesting keep up the great work. It allows the homeowner know what they can and cannot do. If a pickup truck gross 30000 is that too heavy LOL have a great day sometimes I think farmers get away with a little too much LOL
You only have to do IFTA if you are over 26k i appreciate the help but explain everything the right way to do it
Nice video Tim and Christy maybe you should do a video of the costing of all the stuff you have to do to be legal
I’ve been through this whole racket with dot
One in ten competitors are in compliance if you are 26000 gvwr or less and it sure makes it hard to compete.
In this video they don’t even talk about all the employee records and paperwork bs
You can have a 1/2 mile radius driving company and it’s like your hauling nuclear waste
So much information I learned. Thanks for ur time
How dare you try to engage in commerce without a government permission slip!
Enjoyed the video Tim. From the look on your face it don't look like you are enjoying hearing what Trooper Hoover had to say. Y'all take care and God bless.
Whew! Overwhelming!
Very helpful and informative. Thank you both.
Since you were non-compliant with the police state rules and regulations, what kind of penalty did you have extorted from your pocketbook? Land of the free is a definitely a myth.
Well, there is an exemption in Indiana which I qualify for.
Also, that trip was non commercial, so I would have had no issue anyway.
Complicates isn’t it!?!?
@@TractorTimewithTim I am thinking you should keep in private and take donations, like Cheeseburgers, and some dollars! This is a nose dive into paperwork nobody wants .
Extort. We should do more like community service penalty like picking up trash on the highway for breaking the rules and regulations. False log book, 10 hours of community service instead of 10 hours off duty! Lol. Extort! Your funny!
LOVE your end screen!
Should’ve told him it wasn’t a commercial enterprise, that everything you do you do for free
First time I've heard about a fuse requirement.
Yup, spare fuses, light bulbs including a spare headlight (learned that the hard way).
Really all depends on the DOT individual, if he/she got laid recently, attitude, ect. I keep a bag of emergency donuts on board, just in case.
@@XSteele never heard of the lightbulb? I know you’re required to have spare fuses/breakers, most vehicles have spare fuses in the fuse box in dummy slots though, if that ever comes up it’s because they’re mad they didn’t get you on something else...
@@codyg7936 Not sure if required, but sure did come in handy
@@XSteele absolutely, I kept one spare, they should have a recommended list, you need a good 4-5lb hammer, at least two large adjustable crescent wrenches, a wretched wrench set, small electrical repair tools (wire strippers and misc butt connectors), air line quick couplers (extra air line), brake adjustment tools (provided you’re competent enough to use them correctly), large jumper cables, really helps to have a good tire gauge, extra glad hand bushings, extra glad hands! (They love to snap in the cold) , Teflon tape, gorilla tape, windex and paper towels, grease, wheel chocks, and I don’t care who you are or what vehicle you’re driving everyone needs a good dash cam because crazy stuff happens all the time, if you spend enough time on the road you’ll spend a good bit on the side of it too!
Everything has to work....
Thanks Tim
Very informative. Good video Tim.
Nice info! Been looking at trucks this helps out a lot in making a decision on weight class!
Coming from the enforcement side and transitioning into the private hotshot industry, I get the govt regulations. I know it’s a lot and I don’t agree with the many regulations but the trooper was cool, honest and transparent. Many agencies don’t allow their troopers to do videos like this. Thank you for the information and love the Bible verse at the end. God bless.
Good Stuff, Great Help, Good Tips 👍Thanks!
You want to hear something funny. I was a paramedic for 12+ years working private EMS. We did not have to comply with any of that stuff. No commercial licenses, no DOT physicals, no drug testing, no commercial DOT numbers, fuel stickers. We had a 2 hour CEVO driving class and that was it to run "Hot". Same thing with the fire guys. They are running those Engines, Tankers, and Ladders with absolutely no regulations and very little training.
Here in Ontario it was easier to just break the law when I went between our different farms. The local law looked the other way and the provincial police didn’t patrol the local roads
Love how you edited the various decals onto the door. Trooper Hoover is great, seems like he has a fair amount of teaching experience too. I disagree with Christy, you should not have bought an F250, you should have bought a Tundra.
That's a joke, the F250 is a great truck, but I do love my Tundra. Should have bought an orange one though. (Wink!)
New name time??? Truck & Trailer & Tax Tuesday!
Thanks for sharing.
I use to see Hoover post on Facebook all the time, Havnt seen him in awhile.
Your video made me check the gvwr on my dually. I must admit, I’ve owned diesel Fords since 2005 and I’ve towed with all of them...I haven’t paid an iota of attention to the gvwr before. So, the your video got me thinking. Responsible trailering! Thanks!
Alan. Great to hear. Our primary goal is to get folks to check on this. We may be illegal and not even know.
Better to find out now than at a weigh station or traffic stop, or even worse, an accident!
The video certainly made me think, “huh, I wonder.” Lol Objective achieved!
Got pulled for road side inspection in az and got asked for fuses Luckily I had spare fuses in tractor
This is such a great segment. Here in NY I took a truck in for state inspection and the inspector tossed me a box of valve stem caps and told me if there's any missing, I can fail it. Crazy some of the hoops you need to jump through. That was a commercial truck by the way.
Does the Commercial Inspection have to be done by a Special place or any NYS vehicle Inspection Garages?
@@stlaww77 the inspection station has to be for trucks and trailers over a certain weight. A regular shop that does inspections on regular passenger vehicles can't unless they are also registered for heavy vehicles too, which you typically don't see
@@billfischer6464 ok ok.....thank you
Very informative, the government does not give clear and concise guidance on everything you need to get started
They are slick, I was pulled twice in one week by the same guy in Maryland and when you get pulled they give you a paper good for 30 days so I told the guy I was just here days ago, his response was yeah but I’m doing a level one inspection today.
Trooper Hoover we need more officers like yourself helping people to be successful..
Ha, bootlicking brown noser.
Tim Christi and Trooper looks like a lot of work to be in compliance never thought of all those things did the dealer where you bought say any thing some of my friends have trucks like yours for just running around with they go out of state a lot we wonder if they know

Very good video TTWT... Seems like ya got lots of folks thinking, which is good. Yep those rules and regulations can seem overwhelming, however it saves lives !!! Over costly...yes I agree, but it is what it is.
And all those rules and regulations SAVES LIVES in our busy impatient world.
ifta is filed quarterly rather than at the end of the year. and not required till 26000lbs. gross combined weight rating.
I was wondering why he says the weight limit is 10k lbs
@@sam3d 10k commercial requires a dot number
A lot to keep track of
Hi Tim,
Operating in the class where you become a commercial vehicle crossing the state lines opens up a huge can of worms. While Trooper Hoover made it sound easy, it unfortunately isn't. I think your viewers would like a series of videos starting with the complete list of the steps you need to do, and a video going over each one or two of those steps.
Also, I'm sure the insurance requirements also become very complicated and costly as well.
Might make you want to go back to your Honda Ridgeline pickup and stay in state!
Not that high for me.
Thumbs up to Trooper Hoover.
Excellent information
hahahaha I haven't laughed this hard in a while. Tim's expression at :04 vs Tim's expression at 3:00 hahahahaha That's the government for you. OF the government, BY the government and FOR the government.
Exactly! Was that overwhelming or WHAT!?!!
@@TractorTimewithTimYES!!! haha Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Trooper Hoover taking the time to explain this for everyone's benefit. It's just pretty eye-opening how far the long arms of the government have reached into our lives. Kinda scary when you think about it.
Great in from the source
When you register for a DOT number be prepared for the largest amount of scam calls, emails, texts and mail. Your information becomes public record and there are lots of companies wanting to "make your life easier" by taking your money.
"Life is so much easier when you don't have the burden of all your cash weighing you down" -Homeless man
There used to be an exemption if your truck was not for hire. That statement had to displayed on you truck. I stand be corrected but it’s worth checking.
Very Interesting the only thing differance in Australia is FUEL tax is already on DIESEL at the PUMP.
These are just a few things commercial pickup trucks need to know. A couple of things not mentioned are mandatory e-logs, load securement, CDL's, and commercial insurance. The same rules that apply to big trucks also applies to commercial pickups and even cars if carrying hazmat which requires a CDL endorsement. It surprises me to learn many commercial pickup truck drivers do not have CDL licenses even just pulling travel trailers.
Road Pirates! When did our troopers become revenue agents?
And you expect me to respect these people.
Hoover doesn't have to make these videos.
Ha... the look on Tim’s face... priceless! Back to small truck and a smaller machine?
Even small truck and trailer is over 10k combination. Panic!!
Very informative 😂👍
Wow that is a lot of Great info, thanks
Will you be covering the physical exam requirements for commercial drivers?
Will you be covering the cdl license requirements for commercial drivers?
Somewhat, and yes.
They got you by the you know what Tim. Good luck getting out of that jam.
😳 All I heard was the sound of a cash register. Yikes!!
One important requirement the Trooper omits. These requirements only apply to business usage not personal use truck usage and trucks
This is an entire series of videos. We discuss both personal and business in the series.
IFTA is only required if exceeding 26,000lbs as well
Mentioned repeatedly in the comments.
Couple of times around the May pole and you'll be set.😁 It's a bit of a pain.
To clarify its not just state to state. If your gvw is over 10-1 you need it in state also. Trooper may have mispoke unless my state is different. I have a 1500 with a small trailer, I drive locally and am required to have #s.
There is an exemption in Indiana
Great video!
Tim, you could have those decals made for you as a static cling type decal and just put them on the rear window
rear side windows.
There is a lot of gray area in northern Indiana and all over USA regarding those pick up truck drivers who are delivering campers from a manufacturer to dealerships nationwide. Carriers who these pick up truck drivers lease on to are allowing the drivers to remove the DOT placards, log off duty, and tells them to bypass weigh stations, etc.
How does this work legally if the trucks weight is over 10,001 lbs and the fact there is a lease agreement on the truck as a CMV? Maybe you could do a segment specifically about one way camper haulers in pick up trucks? Thanks.
I have a 3500 dually I use to pull my skid-steer. its on a trailer rated at 17000llbs. the skid-steer with bucket weighs 12000lbs. this is really my personal wheelbarrow since I've had 3 back surgeries. the only time its put on the trailer is to take it in for service. I've never made a dime with it. I wonder where this falls according to the law. I'm a retired pipe welder.
Very good video. Trooper Hoover is a gifted communicator and presented the information clearly.
Well done.

Hey tim, you should have hooked up the BIG GREEN TRAILER and rolled up in there with a whole load of CASEY.
This was a two for one trip. We had to go to Illinois to pick up the Gator...so we stopped by on the way.
My chevy 3500hd has a gvw of 13,000.
Even though it is titled as a non comercial vehicle i still had to get the following.
A physical card
DOT inspection
A sign that say NOT FOR HIRE.
Traveled threw West Virginia and was pulled over for a DOT.
Also had to get a State inspection.
Most states do not consider a toyhauler trailer an RV. You will get pulled over.
No you don't.
Thanks trooper hoover, I just saw you pilfer my wallet...
Tim, now you might just as well convert your truck to flatbed, they are sooo useful on a real work truck.. Good luck.
Mr Tim I could see it in your face you’re like o no what did I do lol
Good info.
Can open, worms EVERYWHERE!!! And you haven't even gotten into the DOT Medical Card requirements if you have/need a CDL. Still a good series though.
You are right. The early bird should have fun tomorrow morning! :-)

my truck dont have fuses, and i was told by nystate dot as long as i dont operate in commerce i am not commercial, i can leave all my decals on the truck also. The only thing is i was told weights and measures would apply.

You can get electrostatic cling film lettering works beautifully on vehicles. Truck Needs To be clean on installation.

I'm an owner operator and to speak on the IFTA part you are required to file a quarterly fuel tax report stating how many gallons of fuel you purchased in each state you drove in or through. If the states has the same fuel tax rate then you will not pay any extra just file the report and they will transfer the tax from the fuel you bought in one state to the other for the miles you ran in the other state, but if you buy fuel in a lower tax state and travel in a higher tax state you will have to pay the difference on the tax at the end of that quarter for the miles you run in that state. The mess you have to go through to haul commercially is ridiculous and if you ask 3 different people on what you need you might get 3 different answers, depending on there interpretation of the law.
chase5726 exactly. I’m o/o also it’s sickening all the hands out for my money from ins to taxes it hurst my soul to give them my money I work hard for
If I’m not mistaken IFTA isn’t for all commercial vehicles only those running over 26,000 lbs with a cdl a non -cdl hot shot truck doesn’t have to pay IFTA
I believe you are right. I followed up with Trooper Hoover on this. I believe he misspoke. If you need confirmation, don’t hesitate to reach out to him on FB
Your last sentence....ask 3 different people and get 3-different answers....true words have never been written!!....it doesn’t matter if they are troopers or truckers....neither will get all the questions correct. Sad state of affairs!!!
@@TractorTimewithTim You do not need an IFTA sticker if your under 26K combined truck and trailer GVW rating
If you were to print all the laws for transportation you would need a CDL to haul it.
Certainly if you printed all the ‘hearsay’ about said laws, you would need a freight train!
Well hope Hoover knows the laws a bit better than NM & AZ! My last truck was gas 10,000 gvr for and trailer was 14,000...And AZ got me for no IFTA...I argued ..that I was not required to have it. And i now also have a letter from IFTA...and yes...I was right...Now...under 26,000 and below does now have to do IFTA...unless the power unit has 3 or more axles! How many axles in that truck there!
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve driven thru a DOT checkpoint and there is always two or three f250 sized pickups with a skid loader, small excavator or tractor on a trailer getting a their day ruined and also a huge fine. It’s always a great idea to know your gross weight, and if you are registered and legal to pull that amount of weight.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought if you had enough fuel to cross the state or to go in and out you didn’t need to buy a fuel sticker for that state?
is that a bucket with grapple in the back of your truck to put on johnny
