I read Living Dead Girl as a middle schooler. Way too young for it. Having re-read it once and only once as an adult, the thing I find most disturbing about it is how because the main character (her real name is Kyla) was kidnapped at such a young age, she has absolutely no understanding of what is being done to her. The verbiage used to describe the crimes commited against her is very juvenile. She doesn't know the words for non-consensual sexual contact at fifteen. She tells her story through these stilted short sentences that clearly come from the mind of a child. The story and content is horrifying but the prose is what really stuck with me, sortof like how people refer to Lolita's prose. Not nearly as poetic though.
It's really funny to me that I was recommended your first part of this iceberg earlier today, watched it with my mom, then got salty when I realized no other parts were out yet. We watched one episode of Law & Order, then I get back on RUclips and it recommends me part two, when it was just uploaded an hour ago haha
thank you for taking the time to take a deeper than surface level dive into the novels in the iceberg!!! i also love your mentions of horror movie adaptations from the books!!
My favorite book is Lolita because of how much the public misinterpret the story. Of course there is the people who romanticize the book but you can read it as Humbert Humbert (a name Nabokov himself said he choose to be a disgusting name) lying to himself about his actions, that he thinks as himself as the hero. OR THE WAY I LIKE TO READ AS he's lying at his trial, that he's trying to get sympaty of the jury (victim blaming, etc) but "slip up" a few times (the second most well know quote from this book is Dolores saying "he broke my heart, you merely broke my life"). This is a story that it's VERY VERY difficult to adapt into visual art because very often this type of story end up being "sugar-coated" by the director or the viewers can't put two and two together
I think movies more than sugar coat it, they romanticize it, which a lot of readers unfortunately do as well. That misses the point entirely. They depict Dolores as a coquettish girl flirting with Humbert which is how he, the predator saw things, not how they actually were. It’s more difficult to read between the lines when you have an unreliable narrator and I think that is where the misunderstandings stem from. He’s not supposed to be cool and handsome and romantic, he’s supposed to be so pathetic that you almost feel sorry for him, except then you remember what he’s done to the girl so you can’t feel bad for him.
Best recommendation from RUclips I've had in ages. I watched your first video, immedietly subscribed, and bought "I'm Think of Ending Things" based off your review. AMAZING book. Looking forward to other recommendations from this one!
Cool video but Coin Locker Babies' author is Ryu Murakami. Manabu Yamanaka is the one who made the cover. Murakami also has a super disturbing book named In The Miso Soup. Totally recommended.
Just found your part 1 and loved it, I'm really glad you got part 2 out so quickly! As a side note, think about getting a mic stand! The soft tapping on the microphone when you gesture with your hands has been driving me nuts! But I still love your work! I've dipped into a few of the entries on your last video and I don't regret it! Always thankful for good recommendations
i loved american psycho, and totally understand why most people bring up stuff like the rat scene when discussing the most wretched things that happen in the book, but honestly, i'm shook people don't talk about the homeless man and his dog scene more. it broke my heart to the point i had to put it down for like a week lmao. patrick is so funny even when hes peak evil but the extreme whiplash between depictions of his phony rich life and the intensely emotional, realistic poor people he abuses scares me so bad.
Great video :) One tiny note! Rhoda in "The Bad Seed" is 8, not 18. No hate whatsoever, just wanted to let you know for context- it's a creepy premise for a book either way, but her being just a little kid makes it a lot creepier!
In England, a few of these books are required reading! Lord of the Flies and Of Mice and Men were on the curriculum when I did my GCSEs, and nowadays we have Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, A Christmas Carol, Animal Farm, Woman in Black, and a Shakespeare unit
Come closer is so good!! I’d highly recommend a paired reading with Brain on Fire, as the first book looks at exorcism/possession from a supernatural standpoint, and the other is a medical novel recounting a neurological disorder that prompted the author and her family to think she was possessed. It makes for a super interesting contrast 😄
The Dear Hunter is my favorite band of all time. I have a series of videos that explains the stories of every single album in the Acts series and analyzes all of the lyrics with all the callbacks. Those are probably my favorite videos I’ve created. Go check them out if you have like 7 hours to spare haha
@davismorgan99 I saw them in NYC last year with All Get Out and it was amazing. One of my favorite bands too, I've been listening to them for nearly 15 years.
@@NorthernTorchmy wife and I saw them in Seattle this past November and it was amazing. Perfect set list covering stuff from all across their discography
If you're interested, I'd mention a novel that could be added to the list but is unknown because it comes from a very small country: this book is called Filio is Not at Home (og: Filio ni doma) by a Slovene author Berta Bojetu (I'm not sure it's even translated into English, but it should be). The book speaks of a hidden island society of extreme patriarchy (it's giving Handmaid's Tale), but it has many disturbing elements, obviously a lot of rape, violence and some beastiality as well. The book's also written in a disturbing way and from personal perspectives, so you have some trippy/traumatic shit as well. Would recommend if you're into it, if you can find it, of course. 😉
This is wild I just found your channel today by watching part 1😮 great content and I love the disturbing books explanations Editing to say, I think your channel is about to pop off after reading other comments, haha
The books wrotten by women being inspired by their experiences and (SOME!!!) of the books written by men being "what if you were a BUTCHER and there was BLOOD and MURDER and then you were a CANNIBAL 👻😱" 😭
10k??? you’re too humble. baby go ahead and ramp that number up to 20-50k, bc you can definitely do it! 🌟✨ also i love the sweater, please tell me it wasn’t thrifted 😭🙏🏾💕
Love your videos -- just enough info to decide whether to add the books to my TBR list or avoid them altogether. FYI, Meg Tilly was an actress in the 1980s (I am that old.) I read Hell House, The Bad Seed, several others on these lists. You're doing a great job capturing the essence of the books! (And I do recommend Hell House. There's an old movie, but I am bummed now I know that Mike Flanagan would have made a miniseries of it, but won't be!
The version of the Mysterious Stranger in the animated move was awesome. “Life itself is only a vision. A dream. Nothing exists but empty space and you. And you are but a thought.”
I love that scene. Me and my friend watched it in high school because we heard it was really weird. Most of the movie is decent, but the mysterious stranger scene is phenomenal.
Yeah, the book "Das Parfüm" is mandatory literature in a lot of schools in Austria. So is btw "Die Verwandlung" by Kafka (The metamorphosis) which regularly is mentioned in disturbing book lists too. But actually kinda interesting how regions/countries see things differently.
zombie mentioned!! i wouldn’t say i enjoyed zombie exactly because it was very uncomfortable and creepy but it did what it was supposed to do. joyce carol oates is an amazing author, where are you going, where have you been? is one of my favorite short stories by her and i’m currently reading night, neon by her which is a more subtle mystery/suspense short story collection
I really enjoyed Come Closer by Sara Gran! It definitely freaked me out at some points but I don’t know that I’d put it on the disturbing book iceberg next to most of these entries. A great read but definitely not that disturbing lol!
Definitely had to read Lord of the Flies, my school district had you read it in honors English in tenth grade (which I took as a ninth grader as I was advanced a year). I absolutely hated it, it made me really uncomfortable and the scene where the boys mutilated the pig made me extremely nauseous and nearly put me off red meat. I understand it's probably not as disturbing as an adult, but as a teenager it definitely was
I had to read Lord of the Flies in middle school, it's been my all time favorite book I had to read for school assignment. Thinking back on it, there were some short stories I had to read for school that scared me but I'm blanking on the names.
I’ve never read American Psycho but I’ve heard a little about it. Never did I realize that it was supposed to be satirical and the guy was not supposed to be some super intelligent, mysterious badass. People have interpreted this way WAY off. Thanks for setting things straight for me.
Yeah both the book and especially the movie are hilarious for that reason. When the movie was picked up and looking for a director, the author of the book chose the director of the movie because she was the only one who mentioned how funny the book was and how it was a brilliant satire.
Come Closer is a great book. Personally, I didn't find it really disturbing... It has almost a satirical vibe. Definitely worth the quick read though! Thanks for the recommendations mate.
I work at a courthouse and have seen how differently people react to women who assault underage boys versus men who assault underage girls. I've also seen how the system isn't even set up to properly analyze or punish female offenders. So as dark as "Tampa" is, I can't deny that it's a pretty powerful critique that might hopefully open some people's eyes.
When we had the situation at my high school, I was pleasantly surprised that the female teacher was given a very harsh sentence and is required to a registered sex offender for life.
Come Closer is so good! I’m shocked that it’s on tier six because I don’t think it’s honestly that disturbing compared to most of the lower tier entries. Would love to hear a deep dive on it
davis, your content is really solid, thanks for this video and the one before it! a little feedback from a new fan: your audio is louder on the right than the left (for both vids). doesn't take away from the quality of the content though. 👏🎬
i’m a speech language and hearing sciences major and we had to read Still Alice for an adult language disorders class. i was so shocked to see it on the list! i recommend it tho. very accurate to actual dementia patients experiences
Idk if it's ever been published in English, but "Aliss" by Patrick Sénécal is a disturbing read. It's basically a gory retelling of Alice in Wonderland with drugs and multiple types of abuse. It's rough but it's pretty good
I really enjoyed tampa!! The comedy paired with the haunting reality really got to me!! there’s disturbing scenes for sure, but for me, I just really felt for the groomed boys (jack and boyd) at the end of it all
23:42 can confirm that I too read Perfume as required reading at a public high school; we made illustrated posters about its themes that got put up in the hallway and everything
The funny thing is that I remember reading "The Room" in a high school book club. When I read it back then, I wasn't all that disturbed by it, and just found it more confusing and bizarre thanks to being told from the child's POV. Looking back on it as an adult, the premise is really disturbing, especially since it resembles a real life case of that happening. I still have no idea what the librarian was thinking recommending a bunch of teenagers to read that.
Also, Bentley Little is so incredibly underrated. I've read almost all of his books. They are wild but so enjoyable and fascinating. The Burning, The Town, The House, and The Walking are probably my favorites.
Sounds like you have a lot of books to read already. However, I suggest Burner by Robert Ford (2020). I found it from another booktuber that talks about disturbing/ horror novels. This book has stuck in my brain for 2 years when usually I won’t remember the name much less the plot of a novel once I move on to my next read. I highly recommend.
the room really doesn’t even deserve to be in this list. maybe the novels written by women who actually experienced similar situations but not the fantasied story.
Appreciating these because my goal for 2025 is to read more, but I have a hard time finding anything that catches my interest. So these vids have helped me in putting together a lil list c: thanks for that
Great video! I'm loving your videos. I suggest censoring certain words like s*xual as*ault because youtube likes to take down videos that use words like that.
Thanks for the advice! I think I’m still in RUclips’s good graces as both of my iceberg videos have full monetization with no restrictions. If I ever get demonetized then I’ll start censoring but youtube hasn’t gotten mad at me yet haha
If you were wanting more "demons causing chaos on Earth" from Black Easter, I highly recommend The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (if you haven't read it already).
Oh god All Quiet on the Western Front was one of the books I had to read for school and I thought it was fantastic. One of my favorite books I read for school and I had quite a few books I was assigned for school that I really liked.
Part 3 of the iceberg HERE:
ruclips.net/video/UTghAY9rlNw/видео.html
No way, I just watched the first one
Same, literally finished it 2 minutes ago
Me too!
Sameeeee
YO ME TOO
Same.
i like that you "spoil" the books it makes me wanna read them more, please keep doing what youre doing these videos are awesome
I read Living Dead Girl as a middle schooler. Way too young for it. You have an insanely chill mum what?????
I listened to your first part in the car and assumed you had at least a million subscribers. Your content is phenomenal :) looking forward to more
Loving the sweater! Sock is still growing on me. Great video!!
Well both the sock and the sweater are here to stay haha
Hahah I love the sock. Dude I would have thought this channel was massive the way you present your content, awesome stuff, please keep it up!!
thank you for taking the time to take a deeper than surface level dive into the novels in the iceberg!!! i also love your mentions of horror movie adaptations from the books!!

Definitely looking forward to a part 3 and I really just like to listen to you talk! Time to see what else I can find on your channel :3
Cool video but Coin Locker Babies' author is Ryu Murakami. Manabu Yamanaka is the one who made the cover. Murakami also has a super disturbing book named In The Miso Soup. Totally recommended.
this channel is gonna blow up!! love both of these videos and have downloaded and purchased a bunch of books because of your breakdowns!
Oh, I love that you're a Flanagan stan. He's my favorite writer/director of all time.
Just found your part 1 and loved it, I'm really glad you got part 2 out so quickly!

Yeah I’m working on that haha. I noticed it a lot in the edit
i loved american psycho, and totally understand why most people bring up stuff like the rat scene when discussing the most wretched things that happen in the book, but honestly, i'm shook people don't talk about the homeless man and his dog scene more. it broke my heart to the point i had to put it down for like a week lmao. patrick is so funny even when hes peak evil but the extreme whiplash between depictions of his phony rich life and the intensely emotional, realistic poor people he abuses scares me so bad.

Dang I must have misspoke because I definitely knew she was a kid when I was writing the script haha
In England, a few of these books are required reading! Lord of the Flies and Of Mice and Men were on the curriculum when I did my GCSEs, and nowadays we have Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, A Christmas Carol, Animal Farm, Woman in Black, and a Shakespeare unit

i love when my timing is perfect. I literally subscribed 2 hours ago.
"all book bans are misguided"

I love your videos!! I’m trying to stay awake in the last hour of my 16 hour shift 😭
You can do it! Part 3 is also on the way. I just finished editing it and it’ll be up on Sunday!
i’m a speech language and hearing sciences major and we had to read Still Alice for an adult language disorders class. i was so shocked to see it on the list! i recommend it tho. very accurate to actual dementia patients experiences
Idk if it's ever been published in English, but "Aliss" by Patrick Sénécal is a disturbing read. It's basically a gory retelling of Alice in Wonderland with drugs and multiple types of abuse. It's rough but it's pretty good
Great content, great taste, great voice. Looking forward to your come up
Loving this series! I subbed last night! :)
very interesting video!! looking forward to part 3
I really enjoyed tampa!! The comedy paired with the haunting reality really got to me!! there’s disturbing scenes for sure, but for me, I just really felt for the groomed boys (jack and boyd) at the end of it all
Please do more horror book contents! Loved this.
Thank you the book recs (: downloading onto my kindle lol
Seems like youve been picked up by the algorithm! Nice work on these vids, you've got my sub!
Come Closer is great. it's not like OTT disturbing but there's something really creepy about it. I like all of the Sara Gran books I've read a lot
the room really doesn’t even deserve to be in this list. maybe the novels written by women who actually experienced similar situations but not the fantasied story.
Let the right one in had a 2008 movie adaption and its really good, definetly up there on my favourite vampire movies
Bahha, didn't you tell me like 48 hours ago that this video wouldn't go up for awhile? Nice surprise!
thank you for all your hard work
Love a good iceberg, and these two were really good iceberg videos
Great video I hope part 3 comes soon 🙏
I’ve read Hell House. It was pretty good. I’m can totally see Mike Flanagan turning this into a series.
What is also tragic about Lolita is that it was probably inspired about the real-life case of Sally Horner
Appreciating these because my goal for 2025 is to read more, but I have a hard time finding anything that catches my interest. So these vids have helped me in putting together a lil list c: thanks for that
Great videos dude! Earned my sub with this one!
23:43 hey that’s me! Can’t believe I got a cameo in your video hahah
Keep up the amazing content!!
I just finished the first one, so glad the second part is up!
Fell asleep to the first one and woke up to the second. Hell yeah.
Why does he use the word “woman” in a plural way? So many people do that now and it’s annoying as hell…just say “women”…am I missing something???
It's just poor grammar, or the speaker may have difficulty pronouncing the word. It is really annoying and I'm not sure why it's becoming more common.
New subscriber! Love your channel!
So glad i found your channel!
If you were wanting more "demons causing chaos on Earth" from Black Easter, I highly recommend The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (if you haven't read it already).
Hell yeah, ty for the crazy recs
Oh god All Quiet on the Western Front was one of the books I had to read for school and I thought it was fantastic. One of my favorite books I read for school and I had quite a few books I was assigned for school that I really liked.
My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird and I first read it as required reading in high school and fell in love with it
Yt algoritam was algoritming today
