I currently have 3 bikes but only ever use 1 of them, but there will come a time when your main bike needs a repair, thats when your spare bike comes in, other than that, as long as each additional bike serves a purpose and you have the space for them then no...you can never have enough bikes :)

6:35 I myself am coming from a track & field background. Basically every muscle injury I have had in my career required me to rebuild my balance and coordination in the recovery phase and slowly rebuild my degraded shot putting technique when the recovery was finished. Our bodies are constantly changing and every injury has an impact on our balance and coordination. Some more, some less.

  • @HeintjeMTB

How many bikes do you need.
First of all, a long travel E-mtb to do the most. Form a XC round to downhill lines in a bikepark.
2nd. A daily cheap bike you can park in the city and you know it will still be there when you get back. (if it does get stolen it is at least cheal to replace)
3th. A dirtjumper for playing on pumptracks and dirtparks. (A pumptrack on a long travel E-mtb is not fun)
And maybe if you are into some road rides a race bike could be the forth.

Re Head injury - I took a month off riding after I broke my face and got a concussion. Once you do get back on the bike, invest in a good helmet. I honestly think that the MIPS in my Forefront is what saved my brained.

Re 700mm bars, u could just get lock on grips with one inner clamp, and on trail move them outboard a little...I believe doddy does this as standard...and then back in when finished. No need to move brakes...would be 2 finger set up when narrow, single finger when move them outboard

  • @johnnydoe66

In response to the question about concussions and balance, I am no Doctor, but I have had a similar issue. I have had numerous concussions over the last 40 yrs of serious cycling, both road and mtn, and have noticed a bit of an issue with balance. I especially notice it when doing slow technical rides on trails where balance is key.

Your best possible number of bikes depends on your skill and the type of riding you do. I'm an amateur living in a city as flat as a plate (St.Petersburg, Russia), so I can get away with my 2018 Nukeproof Scout 29er when it comes to street riding, dirtjumps, pumptracks, even our local "downhill" park. It was scary, but totally manageable. My best friend, however, while having a Scout (2016 though) as well, want to focus more on tricks, so he got himself a Dartmoor 26Player. When we are both skilled enough to venture to those MTB destinations far away, like Crimea, for example, a trail or enduro FS bike will be in order. It all comes down to what you can do yourself and need your bike to do as well.

If you have lock on grips, with the lock ring on the inside you can simply side them out a couple of cm and glue on the end cap. Hey presto an extra 50mm of bar width, and it's free!

Try a eBike Chain for an high pivot bike (if you need a longer chain) cause they have 136 and not 116 chain links mostly. Their might be a little heavier but there much more reliable too.

Since I love riding single speed but at times need gears and more travel...I "need" 4 or 5 bikes. One ss road, one ss mountain, one geared road, one geared hardtail mountain, and it would be nice to have a FS option too. Right now I actually have the two ss options, the geared HT, and a FS frame. I also need more time to ride to put all those bikes to good use.

7:30 I used to work on a couple high-pivot Balfa's once upon a time and used a tandem bike chain to replace the old ones. KMC still makes chains for tandem bikes that are somewhere in the 160 link length. I've replaced a few chains on cargo bikes with those KMC ones and find they were quite robust under heavy use.

I have two MTBs...a 2x10 Orbea 27.5" full suspension and a 1x12 Motobecane 29" hardtail and I have one older 26" MTB as a loaner for friends to try. The bike I ride depends on my mood for riding. Also when one needs maintenance I still have one to ride. But I'm open for changing the numbers. Recently my wife told me if I get one more bike that she'll leave me. I sure am gonna miss having her around. LOL

Pretty sure the cables in housing flex more than running down the frame between two metal pieces. More accurate shifting and more importantly better braking. Doesn't make sense if you have hydro brakes

Joining two chains would effectively make it stronger, regarding you use a master link e.g SRAM powerlink, as these type of links are actually the strongest part of the chain.

I know this is an old video but anyone watching and wondering about concussions, take them very seriously stay off your bike and away from any strenuous activity until you're completely healed. The risk of hitting your head again greatly increases the chances of a very major concussion if not a fatal crash. Depending on the severity and where the actual bruising took place a concussion can lead to different long lasting affects, but the main long lasting affect anyone that has had a concussion in the past will face is an increased volubility to another concussion in the future.

To the question of brakes. Magura MT7 are really powerful, just go for a floating brake rotor, for example from hope. Note that the thickness has to be 2 mm. The original Storm HC rotor is, although relatively cheap, a waste of money in my opinion and experience... Having said that, the levers from shimano feel sturdier and bleeding shimano brakes also requires a little less effort...

If you were caught with handlebars wider than 700mm in Singapore (which has happened to a number of people) your bike would be confiscated by authorities and would have to pay $150 for transportation of the bicycle. Besides that, it would take 2 weeks for the authorities to inspect the bike for no reason. The people who stop you would take out a measuring tape just to measure the length of the bar. This has cost a lot of problems to many people in the mtb community in Singapore. Luckily I've never been caught

Bars over 750mm is one year in jail for every mm over 750, feeding pigeons will cost you $500, and jaywalking is life in prison with zero chance of early release. Just deal with the 699mm bars. There is a reason for the low crime rates, most of the law breakers have been executed.

(Long Story short: to me personally 4 is the perfect number of Bikes) i realised that cycling became much more fun when i objectively looked at how many bikes i REALLY need. this is a very personal thing and you need to be very real with yourself but it does change a lot. my times of hoarding bikes i dont ride anyway are over. i am working a lot and then i also do like to run like twice or thrice a week so on a good week i can get 4 rides in and on a bad week maybe just 2 or even only 1. so where is the point of owning like 7 bikes when the max amount of riding i can get in a good week is 4 times, and lets be honest i wont be out for 4+ plus hours on every of those rides either. i came to the conclusion that i "need" 4 bikes. an road bike because i do like fast road riding (its an rather budget endurance bike but still), an offroad bike (can either be an hardtail or an gravel bike) because i life at an rather forested and mountainous area, i would be a fool to not ride all this beautiful stuff, thats also the bike i am using for most of the longer 100km+ endurance rides. an ACTUAL Mountainbike, because thats the main type of biking i am interested in. and an commuter bike, anything cheap i can ride to work with, the gym or just grocery shopping, a bike that doesnt hurt your wallet if it gets stolen (i never got a bike stolen but i am way to paranoid to leave an expensive bike somewhere outside, i am currently using an elops speed 500, its an singlespeed from decathlon for that porpuse, and honestly its actually an fun bike). these bikes are all the "tools" i need for every type of riding. i dont own an winter or bad weather bike because i am either not going out or going for an run if it really rains that hard, and the mountainbike gets dirty anyway both in summer and winter. if i´d be an pure road cyclist i probably had an aero roadbike, an more relaxed endurance bike for bigger rides, an gravel or cx bike just in case i want to go offroad, that could also double as an winter or bad weather bike and again an commuter bike... so still 4... i dont say that 4 is the holy grail. i dont even say its the right opinion... it just is what works the best for me theres not a single archetype of cyclist i can think of that i could be where 4 bikes somehow isnt the magic sweetspot. lets say i would be an pure mountainbiker... DH/Enduro Bike for the fun stuff, Trail/XC or even gravel bike for the physical training, some random commuter because that will always be in my mix lol and then depending on the genre of mountainbiking you mainly do either an dirt jumper or even bmx if you are more of an trickster or just another bigger bike, maybe even something for bike parks. or lets say i´d be an triathlete (never lol) i would get an trusty commuter as always, than an try bike obviously for the races, than an normal roadbike because who wants to ride an tri bike all the dammn time and than either an gravel or xc bike if i want to go offroad. SEE its 4 again. i mean if you have only one specific type of riding that you are interested in and dont have to worry about your bike getting stolen and also dont want to reach out an single bit into the other branches of riding... than one single bike might be good enough... it might even be right for you, but for sure it isnt for me lol.

For many years I had XC bike, endurance road bike and old road bike from 80s as the no-worries-when-stolen city bike, but I managed to snap that 80s cromo frame and it's not recoverable. Then my friend had a team bike for a week and I tried it - it was Trek Top Fuel, one of the high end of the line - and I decided I need another bike. I was aiming for a trail bike but as I live in area as flat as pancake it was reasonable to choose more adequate bike. I ended up with gravel bike made by company known of their gravity bikes: NS Bikes RAG+.
I have 4 bikes now, one is defunct, and am currently thinking about either upgrading my 2005 Gary Fisher Ziggurrat - the one with carbon rear triangle - with 1x and reasonable forks or just buy a trail bike. Hard choices ;)

If you’re like me and had 8 bikes at one point you really can’t have too many unless they’re not worth fixing; then get rid of them, but if you have a bond with your bikes by all means keep them.

I live in Singapore but I don't care about the handlebar rule thing. My bars are 760 and I have no intention of cutting em

#askgmbn to expand on a recent question you featured, at what point does an xc bike become a trail bike, a trail bike become an enduro bike etc

There's an ahead cap available with bottle cage mounts on it called "king cage".

If wearing a bum bag to hold a drink bottle, I’d be worried about landing on the bottle and putting my back out, not to mention the crippling embarrassment of wearing a bum bag!😄

Hey guys, love the channel, I feel like I bought the wrong bike i used to race mx and wanted to try mountain biking so I went to my lbs and bought a scott aspect I just feel like it's too front heavy to have a great time going dh I was looking at buying a 20mm longer fork wider bars short stem dropper post and more aggressive tires, do you think it's worth doing that to this bike? Or should I be looking at buying a complete bike

#askgmbn Hi GMBN, which bike you think I should buy? The Grand Canyon AL 4.0 or the Canyon Neuron AL 5.0? the trails around me are not very technical but I can see how full suspension can be beneficial when riding them. I am fairly new to "true" mountain biking although I have experience on a hardtail. Thanks!

#askgmbn - My question is; when and where do I get the best chance of my question being seen and potentially answered?
I have sent my question in a few times but it wasn't picked or maybe nobody saw it.
For example; would commenting in the first 12-24 hours of the video going live be the best idea? Or maybe via the email? Or maybe even a day or so before the next 'Ask GMBN' show comes out?
    Anyway just curious. Thanks, Lucas!

#askgmbn I've been mountain biking for about 3 months now and loving it! I currently cannot wheelie, manual, or bunny hop. Which should I focus on learning first?
