37. I know this for sure because I counted them over xmas. I once sold a Colnago (CT2), and I regretted it immensely. Never sell bikes, it's like selling your children.
The cheapest route is to build up from the frame. Loads of sites have 2019 frames super cheap, then buy parts when they're on sale. I just scored a $550 suspension fork for my MTB build, for $383.
@@adventuresona700dollarhard5 I think building a bike is never the cheaper option, you can just buy the 2019 model on sale. My local bike shop has for example one Cannondale Supersix Evo cf 105 for under 1600 euros, I think that is a pretty good deal.
@@michaelmechex Maybe if everything is exactly how you want it, stock. I would always (at a minimum) have to replace the seat, pedals and tires. That's in the neighborhood of $380 per bike. I ride MTB's, so maybe road bikes are spec'd better for the money. My point being, when you build from the frame up, you're never buying the same part twice. If this Cannondale comes with the brakes, transmission, wheels, and tires you 100% want, sure it's a great deal. If you need a different seat, pedals, brakes or tires... suddenly it's not such a good deal.
@@adventuresona700dollarhard5 380 for seat, pedals and tires seem a bit steep... In road bikes many people like Continental GrandPrix or GrandSport, which come stock by most manufacturers. New road bike never includes pedals, so you're not paying twice for those. Seat is a complicated matter, what fits one doesn't fit another, but stock seats are usually pretty cheap and still can be sold to someone who likes it.
Adam Hansen and Thomas De Gendt were my two favorites. Adam must have a veritable museum at home! You guys need to visit him! And De Gendt's bikes--the gravel bike and the polka dot one--true mementos of a great cyclist
Best question yet. Really shows the personality of the riders. BTW I don't feel bad now about my bikes. Roughly 6 or so and a handful of frames, parts... stuff.
I recall a comment by the late Bud Moore, famous for building some of the coolest race cars in the States. He wished he'd hung onto some of them, having no idea they'd become so valuable. And I do think these pros should buy or keep any bikes they can. Bikes are not hard to store and someone in the family or future would be thrilled to ride or buy them.
i love that they have so few, on the whole. nobody talked about Di2 or any of that stuff, just functional bikes. i have 5 bikes though and each is unique. i have a vintage retro Schwinn three speed with whitewall tires and a rack for my ice cream rides, and two race bikes, one TT, one road and an old steel road bike, and a true POS beater i use for errands and don't bother locking, it's so ugly and heavy and i love it's functionality, plus it's a twist shift. i don't bother with my Garmin anymore. i ride for pleasure.
3 A 1974 Raleigh Super Course with a 28/44/54 12/28 setup, still a joy to ride with over 75,000 miles on it. A 2000 Bianchi pista for when I feel young and want ride a fixy. A 2010 Bianchi Vigorelli for most of my riding. Note are all steel frames.
Officially or unofficially? :-) Per my wife, 9. There may be one or two she's not clocked yet... I actually got rid of one recently, and will build one for a friend in a couple of weeks, when I've built the new TT bike. Range from a 1957 Carlton Continental, through '90s Colnago MTB to a custom Colnago Super Piu, CT2, a Carlton Pro Mk 5 (daily driver and utterly sublime) to the new Carbon TT Dalkia. Not all are built up, I've got 6 rideable currently. Got my eye on 2 more over the next few years, Wittson Ti TT bike, and a C64 or VR3 Colnago. Possibly a Battaglin Portofino, and a replacement Colnago Master as I sold mine a few years back. And maybe a cross bike, and a track bike, and a... I have a problem don't I?
Well you’ve got to have at least a road and an MTB if you like varied riding. So 2 is appropriate. That’s where it starts, and so it’s easy to have an older hardtail MTB (mine now has a pannier) as well as a modern full-sus. So that’s 3. Then an older/cheaper pub/shopping bike could be wise: in my case a cruiser with front and back racks to carry shopping. That’s 4. Then my road bike is a decent ‘84 frame but with a cheap modern Tourney groupset. So I kinda need to buy a modern road one to commute on instead, probably a gravel bike. So I need that n+1=5. Although at some point when n+1 = 5, I may need an n+0.5 and put a better groupset on the ‘84 racer as it’s still higher geared and lighter than a likely gravel bike purchase and it looks cool. But that’s still 5 bikes. So 5 is the magic number. But my old tourer I had since I was about 13 (and is a bit small for me) lives at work in case I drive in and fancy popping out at lunchtime. So 6 seems a fair number give/take/swap more road or trials bikes for pub or MTBs or vice-versa depending on personal taste. Although it does spoil the look of your living room if you live in a small mid-terrace house with no garage. 😜
BIG APPLAUSE for Adam Hansen for actually giving brand names and models. PLEASE go to Adam's home and do a long video on all the tech awesomeness of the most tech savvy Pro ever!
Its like asking a welder how many welders they have at home but ask a diy guy how many they have but hardly use. This vid has confirmed to me that i have too many bikes.
Buy a bike, take it apart, put the pieces in the shed in slow increments. One Saturday morning you get up and say, 'I think there might be enough bits and pieces out in the shed to put a bike together.'
I am down to eight in my "squadron" (the official collective noun for number of bikes owned) but now I have moved to the Lake District from t'Netherlands I think a canoe would be more useful.
🤣 Yes, I was surprised to hear that he even owns a track bike at all, given his emaciated grimpeur build. I guess when you live in France with their hundreds of velodromes of every type, everywhere, it makes sense??
It definitely seems like the most complicated question to ask a Pro Rider because the answer starts off "I dont have any bikes......but also, i have 20 bikes at home...and I own 5"
How many bikes do you own?

Not as many as I want to!
GCN Tech 3. They’re my love and life...
"How many bikes have you got?"
everyone: "3", "2", "one tt and one road"
adam hansen: "well ... (goes on for 7 minutes)"
He doesn't have so many fingers as bikes, that's for sure
Adam is big of s character hey. More Adam!
They just can't say the simple number.
I heard Adam Hansen was a DNS today because he's still answering the question. If he gets asked about shoes, he won't be able to ride Paris-Nice.
😂👍
We need a “bike shed” video for Hansen
Great idea!
We need a weekly video with Adam Hansen...
@@ChristerWendel This^^
Love the fact that Adam Hansen goes into the detail of each bike , real passion for what he does
Everyone: "Ah, just a few ya know."
Hanseeno: "I've been waiting for this moment."
What a legend
After the Adam Hansen interview I’m thinking GCN need to start their own version of Cribs. VeloCrib
6:07 there’s a vid right there, tour of Adam Hansen’s cave. Just watch the grubby hands.
Big fan of Dibben trying to palm off his old crap to you. He knows you too well.
Adam Hansen is also incredible. Zero filter.
Me : struggling to buy 1 bike
Viviani : 6 road bikes 8 TT bikes and 5 track bikes
😭😭
Just do like I did, buy a load of old used bikes! Wait, no, most of my bikes suck, that's a terrible idea

As always. Adam Hansen wins the video!
LOL surprised Thomas de Gendt stayed around long enough to be interviewed, would have expected him to say hello then dash off into the distance
please arrange that video with adam hansen, that would be an amazing video
Adam Hansen needs his own channel. Nuff said.

Hansen-- a future GCN presenter once he 'retires'! :)
What is the ritual of the race day that allows Pros to stay maximum focused? / What is their favorite warm-up song? On the trainer.

Ok new GCN show : What Adam Hansen has in his Garage ,
Maybe go more in depth like for example what custom made bikes they own or what would their build be?
I remember the last time they did this video and they answer was one personal and like 3 team bikes
ask next time if they either have (a) aero bike or lightweight please
