This generation does not appreciate how talented and beautiful Jane Russell was. Let's also mention that Hoagy Carmichael was a music legend

Hoagy Carmichael had a genious for adapting great music to words. Some he wrote, some notes he adapted from others. Being a great pianist helps.

I get along without you very well
    Of course I do
    Except when soft rains fall
And drip from leaves, then I recall
The thrill of being sheltered in you arms
    Of course I do
But I get along without you very well
I've forgotten you just like I should
    Of course I have
Except to hear your name or someone's laugh
    That is the same
But I've forgotten you just like I should
What a guy, what a fool am I
To think my breaking heart could kid the moon
What's in store, should I phone once more?
No, it's best that I stick to my tune
I get along without you very well
    Of course I do
Except perhaps in spring, but I should
    Never think of spring
For that would surely break my heart in two

Pretty song and really nicely done by Hoagy and Jane. Love it when the tearful memories and steamy echo chamber kicked in. Beautiful.

That's Hoagy Carmichael, the composer and lyricist of this tune, at the upright piano behind Jane. Who knows who was actually singing -- it's long been standard practice in Hollywood films for songs within films to have been recorded in the studio and lip-synced by the star. It may have been Jane, or maybe not. :) But as the composer, Hoagy is the star here. And it is a very nice reading by whomever was singing.

Actually the lyrics are from a poem by Ruth Brown. She was a widow who contributed a poem to a magazine that went out of business. Someone handed Hoagy a copy of the poem and told him he should make a song out of it. A number of ;years later, he did exactly that. The problem was locating Ruth Brown regarding copyright and royalties. So he contacted a friend of his who was the popular radio personality Walter Winchell and he made a pitch over the radio. They were able to find Mrs Brown, an elderly lady, and she signed papers so that she was legally and financially covered. She died the day before the song was to premiered.

Ms. Russell sings this song with the same deep, husky tones that the legendary Karen Carpenter would deliver HER vocals in a few decades. Ms. Carpenter never sang this tune, but she COULD have. 🥁🎤🤍

I just watched this on TV, and came here for a second bite of the cherry. I really enjoyed the film, and it had an excellent cast. Victor Mature, Jane Russell, Hoagy Carmichael, Brad Dexter, Robert Wilke, Jay C. Flippen. Did Jane really sing or was she miming ?

There's an interview with Jane on RUclips where she's very funny in debunking the account of Howard Hughes designing the bra. You'll LOL.

Most film stars couldn't sing worth a damn ,and so they lip-synched to a usually anonymous singer. Watch "Singing in the rain"!
