  • OLD MAN MOON Hoagy Carmichael from the movie Topper (1937). Great sequence of club scenes featuring different versions of the song with Cary Grant and Constance Bennett and a cameo from Hoagy Carmichael playing the piano.

      Always thought this had the best opening of a movie. Takes the same song and plays it so many different ways. Club scenes are awesome!

      @@OTRHALLOWEENHOLIDAZE I also love the scene where Cary Grant is driving with his feet and singing The Old Oaken Bucket, which devolves into singing about Topper -- "Iron-bound Topper, the moss-covered Topper that hung in the well." That just slays me. Cary and Constance both sang very well. And, teamed with Hoagland, what more could you want?

    Old Man Moon wake up
    'cause I've fallen in love
    So spread the news to all the stars above
    Shine for my baby while we're dancing tonight
    and fill her tender eyes with love and dynamite
    Old Man Moon put stardust in a bottle
    of wine
    just do your darndest to make sure that she'll be mine
    and if it's possible to keep shining till noon
    my sincerest thanks to you Old Man Moon

    She could do it all... Drama, comedy... even musicals! (Check out "Moulin Rouge" (1934))...
    You know, I think that Constance Bennett, no matter what you may think of her, was undeniably elegance personified.

    Cary Grant was not a bad dancer, in a funky sort of way, What surprises me is the Topper of Lewis G Carroll (TV) is something of a befuddled buffoon, while Grant's Topper is something of a sophisticate.

    • @RickKhamsi
      @RickKhamsi 6 лет назад

      Take a closer look. Cary Grant is not Topper in this movie. He is the ghost of George Kirby who, along with his ghostly wife, haunts Topper.
      In both the TV version and the movie versions, Topper is the henpecked husband of a social climbing wife.
